FOCUS ON... EUROSEAM

Euroseam was developed from principles originally established over30 years ago involving the ‘zipping up’ of a rolled lap. The sheet sidelaps are closed over supported halters, allowing free movementunder thermal expansion, no external penetration of the sheet, noend laps and low maintenance performance.

The range of products available, developed over almost 25 years, allow multi-performance specification covering the whole building.Architectural trends demand a holistic approach to Building Designand Euroseam allows such an approach with easy integration of a range of metal wall solutions and Architectural Fabrications. All systems meet a wide range of integral and individual performancecriteria.

Euroclad is pleased to announce that Euroseam systems areaccredited by the BBA. All aluminium substrates used for Euroseamsheets are from the same ‘3000’ series of alloys used throughout theindustry and conform to BS EN 485-2, BS EN 573-3:1995 and BSEN 1396:1997 respectively. The durability of the materials isexcellent with mill finish aluminium having a minimum service life of40 years in non aggressive environments, e.g. rural/suburban, anda minimum 25 years in severe industrial or marine environments.

Euroclad operates a Quality Management System approved to BS ENISO 9001:2000.

ENVIRONMENT

Aluminium is one of the most abundant natural materials availableand although initial energy input is required to produce the metal, itsrecyclable nature means that this energy investment is paid back ina relatively short space of time.

Euroclad aims to leave the environment as free from impact aspossible and has developed an Environmental Management Systemthat quickly achieved ISO 14001.

TAPER IT

In order to offer a package that is tailored to any application Eurocladhave invested in machinery capable of rollforming tapered Euroseamsheets. This gives the system huge design advantages, adding theflexibility needed for improved aesthetics and functionality.

Founded in 1981, Euroclad is one of UK and Ireland’s leading manufacturers of steel and aluminium roofing andcladding systems. Main products, including LINEAR Façade systems and the Secret Fix SF500 roofing system, have become increasingly popular with architects and contractors: the core metal profiling activities beingcomplemented by a full fabrications and flashings capability. Synonymous with reliable service and outstandingtechnical support, Euroclad has strong links with leading manufacturers for specific system elements.

ON-SITE

Transporting large quantities of curved sheets or sheets over 14metres long can be costly and time consuming. Euroclad’s mobile roll-forming equipment can remove problems usually associated with this.

By rollforming from a trailer which is self contained and drives on andoff the site, problems such as limited access, high transport costsand extended lead times caused by the need for transport permitsare a thing of the past. There are no additional crane hire costs andthe potential for damage during transit is eliminated. On the day ofsite production the rollformer can be ready to produce Euroseamsheets within minutes of arrival.

CURVE IT

The curving equipment can be delivered independently of theEuroseam rollformer and can also be ready for production after asimple machine placement. Site requirements can be discussedduring the tendering stage.

Sheets can be curved down to a minimum radius of five metres withthe options of smooth curved to convex, concave, waveform or multi-radii formations, all available using the latest CNC machinery forcomplete accuracy.

Euroclad involvementspells success

for Wales MillenniumCentre

Euroclad’s expertise in fabrications for metalcladding and roofing systems has played a key role

in the creation of a striking stainless steel motifacross one of the main elevations of the Wales

Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay.

Working to millimetre accuracy, Euroclad produced two-metre high letterscomplete with precise installation instructions to spell out legends in bothWelsh and English. The required accuracy was achieved using thecompany’s computer-controlled CNC turret punch machine, whichproduced 300 different panels from the 1200mm Rimex rainscreen panelssupplied from the United States. These were specified by the buildingdesigner, Capita Percy Thomas, both for their aesthetic impact and abilityto withstand the harsh marine environment of the location.

With Sir Robert McAlpine as main contractor, installation of the motif wasby Kelsey Roofing Industries, using a bespoke system that the companydeveloped in association with SFS Intec. This allowed for panels to besecured across aluminium packing plates fixed to a GRP substrate.

Euroclad’s extensive range of non-combustible composite panels werespecified by ASDA architects because of its physical performance andalso for its appearance. The sandwich panel manufacturing process, oneof the most sophisticated in Europe, produces wall panels to a level offlatness which is considered by designers and building owners anessential ingredient in marketing and selling to customers. The externalcomposite wall panels also offer the benefit of fast construction enablingthe time from design to opening and trading to be considerably reduced.

Unlike external cladding constructed with foam cores (such as PIR, PURand EPS) which are inherently combustible, the panels have mineral fibrecores which are non-combustible, smokesafe and can provide up to four hours passive fire protection. This means that the externalcladding offers effective precaution against arson with cores which areenvironmentally sustainable.

The recently improved and enhanced Euroclad range of external non-combustible wall panels comprises of three distinctive, yet effectiveranges of products each designed with a specific task in hand. With achoice of steel or aluminum faces and a variety of detailing includingsecret fix joints, they can provide finishes which are architecturally flat or micro-ribbed, giving slim-line module freedom and varying optionsapproved by both LPCB and FM.

Work on phase 1 of the development is almost complete and the result isa truly stunning exterior.

Over 1000 square metres of LINEAR panels were used, manufacturedusing Mitsubishi Chemical’s world-renowned Alpolic/fr® aluminiumcomposite material. The panels were supplied in metallic silver andfeature as bullnose canopies, cassette panels and soffits.

Max Gibson of the contractor Architectural Aluminium commented:

“Traditionally for this type of product we would have commissioned a specialist sub-contractor to supply and install this package. WithEuroclad they provided competitively priced prefabricated panels to theright quality and on time – the experience was a success.”

LINEAR systems are manufactured using state-of-the-art design andproduction technology and are supplied along with supporting fixing rails for ease of installation.

Alpolic/fr® offers all the benefits of Aluminium Composite Material (ACM)with 0.5 mm thick aluminium skins, laminated to a non-combustible mineralcore. These are up to 40% lighter than solid aluminium sheeting but withequivalent rigidity, excellent colour uniformity and superior flatness.

One of UK and Ireland’s largest manufacturersof metal construction systems, Euroclad has

helped transform the ILAC shopping centre in Dublin with the application of its

LINEAR Façade system.

The Euroseam 400 aluminium roofing system ensures excellentweatherability for the lifeboat charity’s new Sea Survival Centre,Lifeboat Support Centre and associated buildings. It is also a keyarchitectural feature. The impressively designed and integratedbuildings incorporate a series of complex curving roofscapes on anumber of different levels which create a dramatic visual effect fromevery angle. For all roofs, 0.9mm thick Euroseam sheets were rolledon site, in lengths up to 50m for some of the largest spans.

Successful fixing was carried out by specialist roofing contractor, TA Colbourne, who employed a Euroclad structural decking system for

the Sea Survival Centre and college building, and S & J Roofing Limitedwho installed Euroseam on the Lifeboat Support Centre, over purlinsand steel 32/1000 liner sheets carrying Rockwool insulation.

A clever concealer of marks and stains, the Stucco embossed finishalso proved to be a wise decision as the project is in the world’slargest natural harbour and is home to an extensive seagull population!

Project architect was Poynton Bradbury Wynter Cole Architects. The main contractor was Dean and Dyball.

Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems’building enveloped by

Euroclad products

One of the UK’s largest metal cladding and roofing manufacturers,Euroclad Limited, has supplied products for an entire building

envelope for Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems’ new building based inMelksham, Wiltshire.

12

Page 13: Euroclad Project Bulletin - Issue 1

The exterior is covered entirely in Euroclad products, including theroof, flashings, panels and special bullnose pieces: the result is aneffective and aesthetically pleasing appearance for a simple designand build project.

Around 7000m2 of Euroclad’s Euroseam Stucco embossed self-curvealuminium standing seam roof, constructed to comply with BuildingRegulations and Standards Parts L2 was specified for the project. The natural aluminium finish forms its own self-repairing protectiveoxide layer, which provides natural protection to the roof and a longservice life that has life span of up to 60 years.

Euroclad control the complete manufacturing process of the roofingand cladding, which includes rollforming the roof sheet on site. This is achieved through the use of a mobile rollformer, which is self-contained and drives on and off site.

Employing the Euroclad mobile rollformer overcomes problems suchas limited access and storage space, high transport costs andpotential damage to products during transit and allows for a moreefficient process of installing roofs.

A telescopic ramp was used to roll the Euroseam sheets directlyonto the roof, eliminating the need for a crane. The telescopic rampand entire rollforming production unit could easily be moved todifferent locations around the site allowing great flexibility forproduction of different roof areas.

Euroclad fabricated special large section bullnose eaves, in 0.7mmsteel combined with flashings and a range of visually pleasing detailson the façades. Flat Euroclad 32/1000 profile was installed in CorusColorcoat HPS200® to the sides and rear of the building.

David Hodgson of TKL Architects, who was involved in the project, said:

“Euroclad was specified because it provides quality that also beatcompetitors on price. They can supply cladding and roofingproducts for a full building envelope, both in terms of technicalelements and aesthetic aspects of the project.”

He added:

“I would certainly not hesitate in specifying Euroclad products infuture projects because they have everything in place to provide aquality product and an effective service.”

Euroclad also provided full thermal calculations for the building, which conforms to BS 10211 Parts 1 and 2.

The new Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems building is a good demonstrationof Euroclad’s ability to provide products and services for a full rangeof cladding and roofing purposes that add an aesthetically pleasingdynamic to a standard design and build project.

Taking the shape of an ellipse, the Euroseam standing seam roofspans around 8,500m2 of floor space. Finished in Moorland Green, the roof is part of a building designed to present a dynamic andinspiring appearance for 400 members of staff at the Quedgeleybased headquarters. An area planted as a ‘green roof’ contrasts withthe smooth, precise lines of self curved aluminium.

Controlling the complete manufacturing process, Euroclad rolled thesheets on site, including single lengths of over 120 metres.Euroclad’s self-contained, mobile rollformer eliminates issues such aslimited access, storage space, high transport costs and damageduring transit. A telescopic ramp allowed the roof to be lifted directlyfrom the rollformer into position, to be installed by MH MasseyRoofing and Cladding Contractors. Euroclad Fabricationsmanufactured bespoke flashings, shaped as two identical, opposingradii. The flashings edge the perimeter of the roof, forming a precise, defined finish.

Blackdown Horticultural Consultants installed the green roof systemon around 200m2 of the Euroseam roof.

Alan Tarr of Blackdown Horticultural Consultancy project managedthe green roof installation. He comments:

“A green roof helps to enhance performance by providing a naturalsystem of containing heat, improving rainwater management andproviding a higher standard of air quality outside.”

Europanel PVDF composite panels, with Rockwool insulation, havebeen installed on vertical exterior façades, finished in MoorlandGreen. Martin Massey, Project Manager for MH Massey Roofing andCladding, says:

“Systems from Euroclad allow us to install cost effectively, withoutcompromising on quality.”

Commenting on the striking building, Chief Constable Dr TimothyBrain says:

“Not only will the building provide considerable operationalbenefits to the people of Gloucestershire, but our staff will benefitfrom working in modern, purpose-built open plan offices withbetter equipment and technology. It will be an exciting buildingthat will inspire the people who work in it”.
