principles, notably the discussion of anchoragecontrol in Begg therapy alongside edgewise systems, which is no easy task. The book shineslike a beacon of commonsense based on thevast experience of the authors. is a book forclinicians by clinicians which must be read by

W.B. Saunders Company, Philadelphia. Price: £50.00, ISBN: 0-7216-5591-2

This is the fourth edition of this classic textwhich is now almost 30 years old. Twelve years

have elapsed since the last edition, and theauthors have taken the opportunity to makesubstantial revisions to the text. The most immediate change is the billing of the authors. Ashand Ramfjord does not seem to roll so easilyfrom the tongue as Ramfjord and Ash, butmaybe that is just habit. So what else haschanged? The whole format is different; goneare the four sections containing 17 chapters tobe replaced by 12 chapters with no sections, and abou t 100 fewer pages. Gone also are themany pages devoted to bruxism and the neuraland structural basis of motor function. Manyof the illustrations are retained, and someupdated to show, for instance, the clinicianwearing gloves during the examination of thepatient.

The authors state the text is for practitioners, students, teachers and investigators who areinterested in the function and dysfunction ofthe masticatory system. Orthodontists couldlegitimately claim to be amongst these groups. is disappointing therefore to find that thechapter on Occlusion and Orthodontics remainsalmost unaltered from the previous edition, andeven 12 years ago the appliances illustratedwould have been out of date. Furthermore, itis difficult to understand how the authors have

produced this chapter without a single referenceto Ronald Roth.

Elsewhere the book offers much commonsense on the concept, etiology sic epidemiology and pathology of the masticatory system. In Chapter 3, orthodontis ts will be pleased tohear that the authors do no t believe that orthodontic treatment leads to temporomandibularjoint dysfunction syndrome, whilst suggestingthat it may help to relieve some of the symptoms. This reviewer was relieved to discoverthat the dental articulator is often a mysteryto ... clinicians . Sound advice follows on thechoice and use of articulators. There are twochapters describing the treatment of occlusalproblems which could have been combined intoone. Orthodontic appliances such as the Hawleybiteplane or the Sved appliance are but a smallpart of the initial approach to treatment, thepreferred option being full acrylic coverage ofthe maxillary teeth allowing flat occlusal centriccontacts of all mandibular teeth.

This is a textbook which ought to be read byanyone who provides orthodontic treatment foradults, should be required reading for all participants of combined Orthodontic/Restorativediagnostic and treatment planning clinics, andclinicians associated with patients who sufferfrom temporomandibular joint disorders.
