Nature deficit disorder & how to cure itThis condition occurs when young people spend too much time in front of screens and not enough time outdoors. Aimee Goglia developed the Full Moon Rising program to address the issue.

“I wanted to ensure that in addition to learning about technology, young people also spend time in nature,” she says. The Full Moon Rising program is presented to first and second graders during the school day over five weeks. The last day is a day-long field trip that corresponds to the curriculum.

When the topic is forest ecology, they go tree climb-ing. For winter survival, they go to the snow. For the water cycle curriculum, they go swimming or rafting.

Recreation Director Craig Smith says FMR exempli-fies the division’s motto: “Building bodies and brains while having fun and playing games.” All five senses are used in the learning process, reinforcing the de-velopment of new learning.

District 4J After School Coordinator Sharon Tabor says Full Moon Rising offers a STEM (science, tech-nology, engineering and math) experience, giving the students real, hands-on experiences in the outdoors.

See the Youth & Family, Outdoor and Camps sections of this Recreation Guide for opportunities to get kids outside. To see a video on Full Moon Rising, go to www.eugene-or.gov/rec and click on the YouTube icon.
