Please be advised, we will be repaving the entire church park-ing lot the week of Monday, June 11th through Saturday, June 16th . During the repaving process, parking access will be re-stricted. All vehicles will need to be removed from the area no later than 6 AM on Monday, June 11th. If your vehicle is not moved it will be towed at your expense. For alternate parking, the elementary school yard will be open. Please reference the map detailing where you can park for daily mass or to visit the Museum/Cemetery. This is going to be a significant undertak-ing and we will need everyone’s cooperation to ensure as little disruption as possible. We thank you in advance for your co-operation.

Pastor’s Reflec on

We have a fascinating situation going on in today's gospel. “When his relatives heard of this they set out to seize him, for they said, he is out of his mind.” In all four gos-pels the family of Jesus and his disciples do not seem to understand Jesus at all. Howev-er, in the gospel of Mark the lack of understanding of Jesus is most extreme. Only the gospel of Mark has the family of Jesus thinking with worried concern about Jesus. Why do they think that Jesus “is out of his mind”? Is it because the family is embarrassed by the public activity of Jesus; or is the family concerned because Jesus is attracting the suspi-cious attention of the religious leaders? Whatever the rea-sons the family of Jesus does not understand him and they are seriously worried about him. The interesting thing about this is that Mary, the mother of Jesus, is included in the family that is worried about Jesus. In contrast, in the gospel of Luke, Mary is presented in a contemplative way as she looks and meditates on all her experiences connect-ed with her son. Jesus’ family comes to the place where he is staying surrounded by a crowd. The family sent word that they wanted to see him. Jesus is told, “your mother, and your brothers and sisters are outside asking for you”. Jesus’ response is harsh: “Here are my mother and my brother’s. For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother”. Is Jesus rejecting his family, including Mary, his mother? At first, the answer to this question seems to be a resounding “yes”. However, a deeper response is that Jesus, like any good teacher, uses the present situation to teach a very important lesson: relationship to Jesus is based not on fleshed and blood, but on the total commitment to the will of God. Is the family of Jesus (including Mary ) excluded from following the will of God? The answer is “no”. We know from the rest of the gospels and the other writings of the New Testament that the family of Jesus does come around and become disciples and leaders in the early Christian church. The most clear example of this is the case of Mary. Mary could not simply rely on being the mother of Jesus; she had to become a disciple as well. The glory of Mary lies in doing God's will and being a faithful disciple of Jesus. Because of her faithfulness to God's will and discipleship Mary goes from being the mother of Jesus to becoming the mother of the Church. Mary is a model of faithfulness, courage and discipleship. While her virginity and physical motherhood are important, her true glory shines in her model of faithfulness , discipleship and cour-age. Blessed Mother Mary, bring us closer to your beloved son and Lord. Mold us in the fire of your heart to become faithful disciples of Christ and to embrace God's will for us. Amen!

TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 3

Tenemos una situación fascinante en el evangelio de hoy. “Al enterarse sus parientes, fueron a buscarlo, pues decían que se había vuelto loco”. En los cuatro evangelios la fami-lia de Jesús y sus discípulos parecen no enten-der a Jesús del todo. Pero en el evangelio de

Marcos esta falta de entendimiento es más extrema. Sólo el evangelio de Marcos describe a la familia de Jesús pensando que el “se ha vuelto loco”. ¿Sera porque la familia de Jesús se avergüenza de su ministerio publico; o quizás la familia está preocupada de que Jesús este atrayendo la atención sos-pechosa de las autoridades religiosas? Cualquiera las motiva-ciones, la familia de Jesús simple y sencillamente no lo en-tiende y están preocupados por el. Lo interesante de esta es-cena es que María, la madre de Jesús, se encuentra entre la familia que lo busca. En contraste, el evangelio de Lucas des-cribe a María en forma más positiva al presentarla más con-templativa en sus experiencias conectadas con su hijo. La familia de Jesús viene a buscarlo en el lugar donde se hospeda rodeado de una muchedumbre. La familia manda pedir hablar con el. Le dicen a Jesús, “Ahí afuera están tu madre y tus hermanos, que te buscan”. La respuesta de Je-sús es sorprendente, “Estos son mi madre y mis hermanos. Porque el que cumple la voluntad de Dios, ése es mi her-mano, mi hermana y mi madre”. ¿Está Jesús rechazando a su familia, incluyendo a María? A primeras, la respuesta a esta pregunta es un rotundo “si”. Sin embargo, una respuesta más considerada nos pone a Jesús como un buen maestro quien utiliza la situación presente para dar una lección muy impor-tante: comunión con Jesús no se basa en el parentesco de san-gre, sino en el cumplimiento de la voluntad de Dios. ¿Esta la familia de Jesús excluida (incluyendo a María) de seguir la voluntad de Dios? La respuesta es “no”. Sabemos por los evangelios y otros escritos del Nuevo Testamento que la familia de Jesús terminan por convertirse en discípulos y líderes de la iglesia cristiana primitiva. El mas claro testimonio de esto es el caso de María. No era sufi-ciente para María ser simplemente la madre de Jesús; tenía también que ser discípula de Jesús. La gloria de María reside en cumplir la voluntad de Dios y ser una fiel discípula de Je-sús. En el cumplimiento de la voluntad de Dios y en el ser una discípula de Jesús María pasa de ser la madre de Jesús a convertirse en la madre de la iglesia. María es un modelo de fidelidad, discipulado y fortaleza. Aunque el ser virgen y ma-dre es importante cuando se habla de María, la verdadera glo-ria de María brilla en su fidelidad, discipulado y fortaleza. Santa Madre de Dios, acercarnos a tu amado hijo y Señor. Fórmanos en el fuego de tu amor para ser fieles discípulos de Cristo y cumplir fielmente la voluntad de Dios. ¡AMEN!

San Gabriel Mission Elementary School Congratulations to the Class of 2018!

On June 1, 2018 the graduating Class of 2018 became the 105th graduating class of San Gabriel Mission Ele-

mentary School. In a farewell address, Principal Garcia reflected on the many charisms and traits that our students acquire during their time at Mission Elementary.

…I see before me young people who have grown up Dominican and learned the Claretian traditions, who live out the charisms they have grown to know and call their own. When you practice in or-der to perfect a musical instrument or a dance routine or study and ask your teacher to clarify a challenging concept in class, you are living out the Dominican pillar of seeking wisdom and “VERITAS”-truth. When you design and implement a service pro-ject to make blankets together for the homeless, you are living out the Dominican and Claretian traditions of service…when you lead the school community in Masses and prayer services, actively par-ticipate in retreats and take on the role of altar servers and lectors at our school Mass, you are living out the Dominican pillar of prayer. You have demonstrated a lived under-standing of our expectations about what it means to be a graduate of San Gabriel Mission Elementary School.

Congratulations Class of 2018 on your many accomplishments and talents and for living out what it means to be a fol-lower of Jesus Christ. We ask you, our greater San Gabriel Mission parish family, to pray for our graduates as they em-bark on the next part of their journey.

Farewell to Dr. Sallo

Welcome to New Interim Principal Ms. Raquel Cagigas, SGMES ’92, SGMHS’96

Dr. Marielle Sallo has served San Gabriel Mission High School for the last ten years as a Mathematics & Science Teacher, Academic Counselor, Assistant Principal of Curriculum & Instruction, and most currently as the Principal. We thank her for her mentorship to the young women of Mission as they made their journey to become women of motivation, depth, integrity, character and respect. She has been honored to be the faith leader of the SGMHS community and is thankful for the opportunity to grow as an educational leader. She will end her term as the Principal of SGMHS at the end of June as she pursues her love of teaching.

It is with deep pride to announce that Ms. Raquel Cagigas, Class of 1992 SGMES and Class of 1996 SGMHS, has been appointed as the Interim Principal. Ms. Cagigas has deep roots at San Gabriel Mission High School as not only an alumni of SGMHS but also of SGMES. With her foundation in the Dominican and Claretian Charism and Catholic Education, she will passionately guide the school forward. Ms. Cagigas has served the SGMHS community loyally in several roles for the past 16 years as Religion Department Chair, former Campus Minister, and Assistant Principal of Student Life & Institutional Advancement. Ms. Cagigas holds the following degrees and certification: B.S. in Psychology and Religious Studies, M.A. in Theology, M.A. in Catholic School Administration, and Advanced Catechetical Certification.
