Etowah County Local Baked Foods Contest

Have you ever entered a Bakery and been amazed by the goodies in the display case? You could do this at home

and amaze your family. Baked Foods is a contest that will get you started.

Baked Foods Exhibit lets you:

Show off your baking skills,

Design an attractive exhibit,

Study nutrition information.

What You Will Learn:

You’ll probably try lots of recipes before you find your favorite. Baked Foods Exhibit will make you a better

cook, because you learn:

To select recipes

To make shopping lists

To use appliances and kitchen utensils

To bake healthy foods.

To communicate with others.

The Rules:

- Choose ONE of the following to make for the club contest: a cake, a cookie, yeast

bread, or a quick bread. (NOTE: You must choose 3 of the 4 items to make for county

contest.

- Your items must be baked. Not boiled.

- No packaged mixes may be used. Products must be made from a standard recipe not using a mix.

- You must provide enough of your item to feed at least six people

- You must provide a copy of the recipe.

All 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners from each club will advance on to the County contest. Please contact the

Etowah County Extension Office (256-547-7936) for more information and for any questions you may have.

4-H SUMMER CAMP JUNE 26-28, 2017

Have I Got a Story !! Do you like to tell jokes or listen to stories? Well the 4-H Storytelling

Event is just for you!

What you will learn:

To pick out a good story.

To make choices.

To tell a story before a live audience.

To understand a story or create a new one.

The Rules:

Stories may be told individually or by two people telling a story in

tandem. Teams and individuals will be judged in the same event.

Stories should be 2 to 4 minutes for individuals and 4 to 6 minutes for

two people.

Your story must be told without notes.

You may use simple props which do not distract from your story.

Your story should be something you learned to tell this year.

Try to tell a story that has not been used in 4-H before.

Costumes are acceptable, but are not required.

Your story may come directly from a book or another source or it

may be adapted or your own original story.

4-H Freestyle Showcase What do stamp collection, model cars, and a home-made apron have in com-

mon? They are examples of things you can use in Freestyle 4-H Showcase.

No two entries will be alike. Everyone has different ideas and enjoys differ-

ent things.

What 4-H activity do you really like? You pick the activity and you design

your showcase entry.

Freestyle 4-H Showcase lets you:

Decide what you want to learn.

Be creative.

What you will learn:

To make plans.

To make decisions.

To solve problems.

To decide what it means to do a good job.

The Rules!

Even Freestyle has some Rules:

Your entry can be large or small. It should be no larger than 3 feet.

No live animals. No endangered or threatened plants.

Your work must be original. Do not use copyrighted images.

Be safe in preparing your entry.

Tables must be provided. You must bring any other equipment.

Your entry must be new during the current 4-H year. Don’t use last years

project from another contest.

Prepare for a 3-minute discussion with the judges about what you did and

learned.

Please use a presentation board or create handouts/brochures to educate

the judges/audience about what you are showcasing.

County Contest will be held January 19th at 5:30 p.m. in the Extension

Office. Deadline to sign up will be January 12th.

4-H Competitions

DEADLINE FOR UPCOMING COUNTY CONTESTS If you place 1st, 2nd or 3rd in your school contest you will be eligible to participate in the county contest. You must submit the same entry

you submitted in your school contest.

PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST: Register by Thursday, November 10th to participate. Bring your photos to be judged to the Exten-

sion Office by noon on November 17th. Participants should arrive at the Extension Office that evening of November 17th at 5:30 p.m. and

be prepared for a brief interview about your project.

Blocks Rock!, What Wood You Build?, and Alabama Quilters Register by Thursday, December 1st. Drop your projects off at the

Extension Office by noon on December 8th to be judge. Participants should arrive at the Extension Office that evening at 5:30 p.m. and

be prepared for a brief interview about your project. The Junior Project for What Wood You Build is a Garden Tool Box , and the Senior

Project is a Blanket Chest. Detailed instructions on both can be picked up at the Extension Office. Or you may call the Exten-

sion Office at 256-547-7936 to request a copy to be mailed or emailed to you.

4-H SERVICE PROJECT

In the month of October, 4-H clubs started collecting

change to buy school supplies for children in Louisiana.

We will pick up your collected change in November during your

monthly club meeting. The winning 4-H Club that collects the most

money will get a Pizza Party in December.

Any 4-H students interested in participating in the Livestock Skill-

A-Thon Quiz Bowl please contact Amy Burgess at 256-547-

7936.

A Livestock Meeting will be held November 15th at 5:30 p.m. Any-

one interested please make plans to attend.

4-H PEANUT ESSAY

“Peanuts: More Than Just a Snack”

Any 4-H member can participate. This contest helps members become

aware of the importance of peanuts and the important contribution to man-

kind, to stimulate an interest in peanuts and develop knowledge, skills, atti-

tudes that will be useful in life later.

County level essays may be handwritten, but must be typed for state compe-

tition. Must be received at the Etowah County Extension Office by

December 1, 2016.

Length of Essays: Junior Division—500-750 words in length

(Members who have reached their 9th birthday but not reached their 14th

birthday by January 1, 2016)

Senior Division—750-1000 words in length (Members who have reached

their 14th birthday by January 1, 2016)

4-H Special Events Farm-City Poster Contest

“Agriculture: Stewards of a Healthy Planet”

Rules and Guidelines:

1.Include your name, home address, phone number, parents

name, school name, and teacher’s name on the BACK of

the poster.

2.Entries MUST be the original work of the student ( no

help from parents)

3.Posters must relate to the theme. Name of the theme must

be on the Poster.

4.Size should be no larger than 28” wide by 22” tall and it

should be no smaller than 14” wide by 11” high. Stand-

ard thickness poster paper is preferred. Vertical posters

will not be judged.

5.Any flat medium can be used such as pen, pencil, crayon,

watercolor, ink or oil. NO three-dimensional posters

such as gluing anything on the poster. Three- dimen-

sional posters will not be judged.

6.Criteria for judging include: creativity, originality, neat-

ness, overall appearance and relevance to the theme.

7.Deadline for entry at the ALFA Office is Monday, Novem-

ber 14th, 2016. ALFA’s Address: 125 Broad Street.

8.All award decisions are final. The Farm City Committee

reserves the right to not award a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, place

be a lack in quality of work.

SPEAK UP ALABAMA INFORMATIVE & PERSUASIVE SPEECH

Persuasive Public Speaking is about trying to change your audi-

ences attitudes and ways of thinking. If you want youth to start ex-

ercising more, then you persuade them. If you want your communi-

ty to build a skate park, then you need to persuade people.

Informative Public Speaking is about the facts. If you think that

Rosa Parks was an interesting person, then tell your audience about

her. If you think that technology is changing Alabama, inform your

audience about those changes.

Basic Rules:

Individual Entry Only.

Your speech must be new and original. You cannot copy it directly

from an existing speech, news article or anything that someone

has written or that you have written prior to the current 4-H

year.

Visual aids, costumes and props are not allowed.

Speech should be age appropriate.

Junior/Intermediate speeches must be between 3 and 5 minutes.

Senior speeches must be between 5 and 8 minutes.

Participates must present the facilitator of the event 3 copies of

their speech with name and county listed.

You may use notes, but you may not read your speech.

Your topic must explore the challenges and opportunities of youth,

family and society.
