SAS UPGRADES FLEET WITH AIRBUS A350 PURCHASE

The International Bureau of Aviation (IBA Group) consultancy an-nounced the release of Engine Values Book 2013. Published annu-ally, it provides up to date information on market characteristics and operator distribution of the most commonly used families of aero engines.

During a difficult time for many investors and assets in the aviation industry, most aero engines are demonstrating a robust investment opportunity, and these are clearly reflected in the values contained within this year’s Engine Values Book. Introduced in 2003, IBA’s an-nual reference book provides operators, banks, leasing companies, MRO’s and manufacturers with a comprehensive information source on the current state of the global engine market.

Dr. Stuart Hatcher, head of Valuations and Risk at IBA Group, com-ments, “With more aircraft parting-out and more money pumping into the spare engine leasing market, never before has it been so important to understand the differences between seemingly similar engines. The value profile of high thrust variants of cur-rent production engines remains strong, with GE90-115, GEnx-1B, CF34-10E, CFM56-7BE, CFM56-5B/3, V2500-A5 SelectOne, Trent 700/900/1000, and the GP7000 featuring at the very top.”

However, due to OEM domination in the widebody sector, inves-tors are limited to just the four narrowbody programmes. At the bottom end, values remain under pressure but, providing there is enough green-time, leasing demand may be strong enough to reap strong rates. IBA Group is continually seeing this for engines

such as the high thrust variants of the CFM56-3C1, Tay 650s, PW4000-94s and CF6-80C2s.

IBA Group has observed a major difference from last year in the value pressure of typically high-demand engines that have since been superseded by an upgrade. In particular, the lower thrust variants of the oldest CFM56-5B, 7B and V2500-A5 engines have lost momentum as host aircraft are no longer in daily operation and on-wing times reach a point that leasing demand has been fulfilled.

The part-out market has since been saturated with these types of engines, which has softened demand and pricing must drop in order for a deal to remain profitable.

Despite this, the engine leasing market will remain a resilient and dynamic battleground. As Dr. Hatcher continues, “Old, unservice-able engines will be broken for spares. The demand for current build IAE and CFMI engines will continue well past the introduction of the PW1000G and Leap X. Excess supply engines will be taken up by expected fleet dispersal activities. Outdated engine builds will be upgraded or parted-out (i.e. from DAC, or CF34-8C1), and provided aircraft fleets remain in service, demand will remain for even the least desirable.”

This year’s Engine Values Book provides IBA’s opinion and insight on nearly all modern and popular engine types including for all modern Airbus and Boeing aircraft.

QET Tech Aerospace launches aircraft recycling service

QET Tech Aerospace compliments its aviation airframe Maintenance, Repair and Over-haul (MRO) service with aircraft end-of-life service (recycling) which includes, parting out the usable aviation parts, disposing of the chemicals and non-usable material in an environmentally safe way and recuperating the raw materials. It is estimated by the Aircraft Fleet Recycling Association (AFRA) that in the next 20 year, 12,000 aircraft will be retired. It’s a growing business which complements MRO. “Because our MRO prices are so low, we can part out aircraft under a quality system approved by our aviation authority for the handling of aviation parts. These parts continue to be used in the aviation industry so it is important to have access to the right manuals, tooling, trained people, aviation insurance and handling system in place” says Julio Cesar Alvarez, QET Tech Aerospace CEO. “To further reduce the cost of recycling, QET Tech Aerospace has joined Mexico’s IMMEX program where we have just been approved. While non-Mexican planes serviced in Mexico are already free of service tax, handling of parts and equipment may be taxable. Under the IMMEX program, a plane is temporarily imported into Mexico with no tax or duties. The valuable aviation parts are removed and shipped out of Mexico without any addition tax or duty; one part in many parts out. Once the aviation parts are removed, the remainder of the plane is given to a low cost facility to discard the remainder of the plane but, under the control of QET Tech Aerospace to ensure work is done in an environmentally responsible way.”

services delivered by AFI KLM E&M include repairs, dedicated access to the spares pool, and the supply of a Main Base Kit on Syphax premises. Syphax will also benefit from line maintenance services in Tunisia, ground serv-ices at airports in Continental France, and dedicated engineering support for its A330, thanks to Air France Consulting expertise and its partner AMC (Aircraft Management & Consulting).

On June 24th, WestJet launched WestJet Encore, Canada’s newest re-gional airline, with service to Fort St. John, Nanaimo, Vancouver, and Vic-toria, British Columbia and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. WestJet Encore features a new fleet of Bombardier Q400 Next-Gen aircraft. “Our inaugural flights across western Canada today repre-sent the future of enhanced connectiv-ity for Canadians,” said Ferio Pugliese, President, WestJet Encore. “WestJet Encore is here to liberate smaller com-munities from the high cost of regional air travel while continuing to provide every guest with our award winning culture of care. Much as we did back in 1996 with national carrier WestJet, WestJet Encore hopes to make regional air travel easier, more accessible and less expensive. Strategically, provid-ing access to more Canadians as well as using WestJet Encore to fly new non-stops and enhance our frequency between markets will not only enable incremental growth from new markets but also enhance our overall value for the business market.”
