Preliminary railway priority ranking
Different multi objective Socio-economic indicators or criteria have been utilized to prioritize for the development of National Railway Network
Population Served By the Railway Link (20%) The existing agriculture production and future potential of the Woredas crosses by the link (20%) Existing livestock potentials for the Woredas 10%) The Availability of mining and the types of mines soon ready for immediate production (10%) Contribution of the link for National and International trade and access (5%) Existing Road density and distribution on the Woredas crosses by the link (5%) Investment cost for the link (30%)
Analysis is done based on data collected from different studies under woreda level.
The Existing Addis Ababa-Dire Dawa-Djibouti link is considered to be the first priority as it has already
developed huge corridor traffic and hence is not included in the analysis.

The establishment of Ethiopian Railways Corporation
To Build Railway Infrastructures To Operate Cargo Railway Transport Services To Provide Passenger Railway Transport Services To Engage in other related activities necessary for the attainment of its purpose
Based on the Recommendation of TAG , The Ethiopian Railways Corporation (ERC) has been established by the Council of Ministers
Regulation No. 141/2007 to carry out the following purposes:
ETHIOPIAN RAILWAYS CORPORATION
10
Ethiopian Railways Alignment selection
The selection of Ethiopian railway alignment is done
using GIS and Remote Sensing technology What are GIS-RS ?
GIS:- Geographic Information System:
a computerized system for collection, storage, manipulation, analysis and presentation of geographically referenced data.
RS:- Remote Sensing :
a satellite based geographic data collection of the earth objects using the response of earth features to electromagnetic radiation of the sun.
Advantages of using GIS-RS
Efficient
Accurate
Cost saving
Fast
Tool that help for decision making

The selected ENRN and LRT have been surveyed (500 m band) using
the latest technology that found in the world i.e Airborne Laser
Scanning Technology (3-D Object Mapping) using Light Detection
and Ranging (LiDAR) technology.

Ethiopia’s Five Year Development Plan (2010/11-2014/15) Growth and Transformation Plan(GTP)
Five Year National Growth and Transformation plan would enable the nation to double the
agricultural produces and the general economic growth by registering 14.9 percent growth
on average.
Facilitate for the industry sector to take the lead in the over all development activities in the country.
Expanding and ensuring quality health and education services towards meeting MDGs targets in the sectors.
Register fast and sustainable economic growth in which the industry sector would play significant role.
Benefits of youth and women have also been the targets by enhancing capacity building and good governance
issues.
Ensure food security at household and national level.
Intensify efforts to address hurdles of investment flow by expanding infrastructure facilities.
Due attention for the development of train, road, telecommunication, power, irrigation, potable water
and sanitation sectors
More than 2,000 km of railway networks would be constructed Generate 8,000 to 10,000 MW from water and wind resources
Thus, Railway construction in different part of the country is one of the
major activities that the GTP gives due attention
