Part XXX of "Cuneiform Texts from Babylonian Tablets, etc.," contains textsfrom one hundred and eight tablets and fragments of the Kouyunjik Collection in theBritish Museum. The texts here given relate to Omens derived from the liver, and belong to one of the largest classes of Assyrian Literature; they are copied fromtablets made by order of Ashur-bani-pal, king of Assyria from B.C. 668-B.c. 626, forthe Royal Library at Nineveh.

The principal contents of the following plates may be briefly described thus:

(I) Plates I-2i. These contain texts relating to the Omens which may bederived from the inspection of the " Si " *YY, or gall-bladder of a sheep'sliver. The character of some of these Omens varied according to themonth in which the observations of the liver of the sacrificial victim weremade.

(2) Plates 22-32. These contain texts which are chiefly concerned with twoparts of the liver called "Gir" ¥YTY and "Is Ku" ¥Y A, or zibu, and"Na" Ad. The first of these may perhaps indicate the ductus hepaticus, the second, a part of the liver which resembled a club, and the third, theductus cysficus.

(3) Plates 33-40. These texts relate chiefly to Omens derived from thegall-bladder, the "Is Ku" and the " Na." On P1. 34 (tablet 79-7-8, IIo)

are designs in outline which refer to certain Omens in the accompanyingtext, and have no geometrical signification.

(4) Plates 4I-50. The texts here given contain Omens derived from observationsof the gall-bladder and the " Su-si " iT 'l or processus fyramidalis.

They are all now published for the first time, with the exception of one (S. 823)which has previously been completely published, and five others (Rm. 138, Rm. 273 +Rm. 2, 104, 79-7-8, 129 and 81-2-4, 197), of which portions have been edited.

The copies have been made by Mr. P. S. P. Handcock, B.A., Assistant in theDepartment.
