“The English class I once knew involved my handwriting out things at 25 wpm into a lined and bound composition notebook. [The teachers] would grade them, theirs the only eyes to search the words we had written. With laptops, it’s like taking the leap from unheard of to notability. It’s the ability to finally expand on your boundaries and do something different.”

“I think having a laptop computer helps the students write better because when kids write with paper and pen, they really don't like writing because it makes their hands get tired. Students, with a happy heart, write more, and get excited. Mixing [my teacher’s] teaching of writing and the computers, kids get really excited to write. Even right now, I don't want to stop writing. My hands get all itchy to type.”

“Five years after the initial implementation of the laptop program, students’ writing scores on Maine’s statewide test had significantly improved. Furthermore, students scored better the more extensively they used their laptops in developing and producing their writing. And finally, the evidence indicated that using their laptops in this fashion helped them to become better writers in general, not just better writers using laptops.”

We can:•Take a one-year hiatus on annual computer refresh without negative impact to staff.

•Implement laptops for writing for over 13,000 students across 4 years.

•Instead of a 1:1 laptop project for a cost of $6,000,000…
