Estimation of evapotranspiration and crop coefficients of pergola vineyards

Application in Mediterranean environment using multi-sensor remote sensing data

1. Summary 4. CLAIR model Calibration This study focuses on estimating the evapotranspiration and crop coefficients of grapes in overhead pergola by using Landsat 8 and RapidEye satellite data in combination with agrometeorological data, field measurements and by adopting the FAO-56 approach.

2. Data

Figure 1. The study was carried out in Capitanata, Apulia region (Italy). Field estimates of LAI (N=38) were collected using an indirect method (LAI-2000). Images of Landsat 8 (N=11) and RapidEye (N=10) satellite sensor data, were acquired during the growing season for the years 2013 & 2014.

where α∗ is an extinction & scattering coefficient and 𝑊𝐷𝑉𝐼∞ is the asymptotically limiting value for the WDVI. The final value of α∗=0.39 was taken in correspondence of the minimum error between observed and estimated LAI, leading to an average error of 25% in the estimation of the LAI. To quantify the model prediction accuracies we used the following statistical measures: root mean square error (RMSE= 0.33 𝑚2 ∙ 𝑚−2) and the coefficient of determination (𝑅2 = 0.71) between measured and predicted LAI. Hereinafter, we refer to LAI as the estimated values from RapidEye images

3. FAO-56 PM model This method calculates the maximum evapotranspiration of 𝐸𝑇𝑝 of a canopy under stardard conditions by using

values of canopy variables such as the surface albedo and the Leaf Area Index (LAI). The 𝐸𝑇0, calculated from the agrometeorological variables by using FAO-56, is used to calculate the value of Kc (according to the analytical method). FAO-56 is applied twice, once with standard values of albedo, LAI and crop height for a reference surface, and once by using the albedo, LAI and crop height (this latter is fixed for tree crops) from satellite images (D’Urso and Menenti, 1995).
