4 THE NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR Friday, 5 June, 2009

5 June 2009The following is UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-

moon’s message for World Environment Day, tobe observed today:

The economic and financial turmoil sweeping theglobe is a true wake-up call, sounding an alarm aboutthe need to improve upon old patterns of growth andmake a transition to a new era of greener, cleanerdevelopment. The theme of this year’s World Envi-ronment Day “Your planet needs you” is meant toinspire all of us to do our part.

The Earth faces the grave threat of climate change. While all countries will suffer, the poor will bear thebrunt of the impact. But we also have an opportu-nity to change course. Crucial climate change talkswill take place in Copenhagen in December. To-gether, we must press governments to “Seal the Deal”for a new climate agreement.

The world also needs a “Green New Deal” fo-cused on investing in renewable sources of energy,eco-friendly infrastructure and energy efficiency. This will not only create jobs and spur recovery butalso help tackle global warming. If we invest evenpart of the substantial new economic stimulus pack-ages in the green economy, we can turn today’s cri-sis into tomorrow’s sustainable growth. Moreover, countries that make the transition to a low-carbonsociety will reap more than significant environmen-tal benefits; they will be well placed to share theirnew technology with others.

But our planet needs more than just action bygovernments and corporations; it needs each of us.Although individual decisions may seem small inthe face of global threats and trends, when billionsof people join forces in common purpose we canmake a tremendous difference.

On this World Environment Day, I encourage allpeople to take concrete steps towards making theplanet greener and cleaner. Switch off the lights. Takepublic transportation. Recycle. Plant a tree. Cleanup your local park. Hold corporations responsiblefor their environmental practices. And urge yourgovernment representatives to Seal the Deal in Co-penhagen.—UNIC

Cuba’s Fidel Castro calls OASa “US Trojan horse”

HAVANA, 4 June—Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro on Wednesday slammedthe Organization of American States (OAS) as a “US Trojan horse,” despite thegroup’s decision to lift suspension against the island country.

Castro, who ruled Cuba from 1959 to 2006, ruled out Cuba’s potential return tothe body. The OAS was “complicit” in all the crimes committed against Cuba andagainst other Latin American nations by Washington, he said in an article pub-lished in Wednesday’s state-run media. Cuba was barred from attending OAS meet-ings in 1962, three years after its revolution, as part of a broader US economic andpolitical blockade against the island.Castro’s article argued that the OAS servedonly to help the US interfere with other nations in the region, and called for theorganization to be dissolved.

“It is naive to think that the good intentions of one president justifies the exist-ence of a body that... supported... neoliberalism, drug trafficking, military basesand economic crises,” Castro said. Since the January inauguration of Barack Obamaas US president, Cuba-US relations have warmed but remain tense. Washingtonhas lifted US restrictions on travel and cash remittances to Cuba for Cuban-Ameri-cans with relatives on the island.— Xinhua

Study shows estrogen linked to loweredimmunity in fish

The study, led by USGeological Surveygenomics researcher DrLaura Robertson, re-vealed that largemouthbass injected withestrogen produced low-ered levels of hepcidin, animportant iron-regulatinghormone in mammalsthat is also found in fishand amphibians. This isthe first published studydemonstrating control ofhepcidin by estrogen in

US Finds mistakes in deadlyAfghan airstrikes

WASHINGTON, 4 June—A US military investigationhas uncovered mistakes in airstrikes that killed dozensof civilians in western Afghanistan last month, accordingto a US military official. “We do not have an issue with the accuracy of thestory,” said the official, speaking on condition ofanonymity because the results of the investigationhave not yet been announced. The incident in earlyMay stoked long-standing tensions between Afghansand foreign troops over civilian casualties.

Afghan officials put the civilian death toll fromthe airstrikes in Farah province as high as 140 while anAfghan human rights watchdog put the total at 97. Sleeping pills may increaseelderly suicide risk: StudyGOTHENBURG, 4 June—Sedatives and sleeping pills

prescribed to ease depression, anxiety and sleepproblems appear to increase the risk of suicide four-fold among the elderly, Swedish researchers said onWednesday.

They reviewed the records of 85 men and womenolder than 65 who had committed suicide and comparedthem with a group of elderly people from among thegeneral population who did not kill themselves.

After adjusting for psychiatric conditions, thepatients who took sedatives and hypnotics for sleepingproblems were four times more likely to commitsuicide, the study found.

According to the World Health Organization,877,000 people worldwide kill themselves each year. For every suicide death, anywhere from 10 to 40attempts are made, the UN agency estimates.

Scientists have linked sleep disturbances toincreased suicidal risk in people with psychiatricdisorders and in adolescents but it is unclear whetherthe association also exists in the general population.
