VICKI RASMUSSENPresident’s Award | 2014/15

This year the President’s Award was presented to Vicki Rasmussen.

Vicki has been a great contributor to our organisation and has assisted me in a number of areas.

Vicki has been the chairperson of the Building Committee and the face of the Club in the long and challenging discussions with the Consultants, the Management group, Club Board and the City of Joondalup in getting a proposal approved for the redevelopment of the first floor of the Club. We have worked together on this proposal for much of last

year and Vicki has been invaluable with her thinking, advice and guidance.

Vicki is a mother of two girls involved in our Junior section and she stepped up to take on an Age Group Liaison role with her daughters’ age group. As a Board member, Vicki has also provided guidance and advice to managers and myself in addressing the issues that we come across as part of our roles.

It has been great to have Vicki supporting me this year and is a worthy recipient of this award.

This year the Executive and Management committee recognised Rachael Crabb as our Club Person of the Year.

Rachael has been a member of this Club for many years, starting as a cadet, progressing as a Youth and now has taken on many roles in the Club and with Surf Life Saving WA. She is now the Manager of Education Services and this is a significant portfolio for the Club. She is also involved in lifesaving as a patrol captain of the Redgate patrol.

Rachael was asked to assist with the Junior Area this year when an age group manager was unavailable and was only too happy to help. Rachael is also a part of our senior competitive group and has been heavily involved in training and competition for the Club.

One of Rachael’s extraordinary efforts this season has been her voluntary contribution to the SLSWA helicopter rescue service.

4 MULLALOO SLSC 2014/15 ANNUAL REPORT

There are many things to celebrate this season. Our members have achieved some great outcomes for this Club and the community.

As you read through our annual report you will see the great achievements of all areas of this Club. Our management team have put in another huge year to make sure all of the things that need to happen within this Club are done. It takes many volunteers to make sure that 1867 members are looked after each week and make sure our community are safe on the beach. Thank you to all of the Management team and volunteers who offer their time each week.

Our Board of Directors have been guiding us down a journey of change for the Club, including the refurbishment of the first floor of the Club, and continuing to achieve the outcomes of the Strategic Plan. This season we had a change of directors, with Mark Hills stepping down and we welcomed Laurie de Mamiel. The Board this year also had a very strong focus on the recognition of the efforts of the members. There are a number of programs that have been introduced for next season to recognise members for their contribution to our Club and community. These are not extravagant events, but more a small celebration or subsidy for a specific event. Thank you to the Board members for sharing their vision, and the very busy planning of the future of the Club.

One of the main areas of focus for the Management team has been the redevelopment of the first floor. We see this as crucial to place the Club in a position of future financial sustainability, which is a key theme of our Strategic Plan. We set up a Building Committee made up of members of our Board, Executive Committee and other members with specialist skills. The committee engaged a consultant to identify the best use of the space that would support the needs of the Club, its members and the community into the future. A number of design options were considered and a review of other leading Clubs’ buildings was conducted, to see what is achievable and what does not work, so that we can use their experiences. The Consultant’s report was very comprehensive and identified a number of changes to enable our members to have a great experience at the Club and create spaces within the building which can be used for commercial purposes and generate income for the Club. The Board accepted the report and agreed to go forward with a submission to the City of Joondalup for funding. The building committee worked with the City of Joondalup

to have the proposal considered and with the support of our Mayor Troy Pickard and our two ward councillors, Deputy Mayor Philippa Taylor and Sam Thomas were able to get it passed by the smallest of margins. This means that our proposal will be considered for the 2015/16 budget and hopefully with the support of LotteryWest and our own significant contribution, we will be in a position to start our redevelopment next season. My thanks to Building Committee, chairperson Vicki Rasmussen, Ed Neilan, Mark Cleary, Steve Mignon, Martin Kane and Greg Dixon.

Our Support Services area continued to grow. With the increasing requirement to market ourselves better, we found a person to step into the Marketing role and we also recruited a person to take on a Marketing and administrative role in the office. This season we had the newsletter going out on average every two weeks providing all of the information from throughout the Club and we introduced a Business Club and a Business Directory. These new initiatives, as well as those services to our members which include the administrative areas, membership and facilities, have kept Support Services very busy.

In our Operations area, our members did another fantastic job, continuing to support our community and members with over 11,500 hours of patrols and water safety. The Patrols were extended out this season throughout April to keep an eye on those many users of the Beach well into autumn. Thank you to all of our patrolling members and award holders who once again gave up their time to provide a great service to our community that is truly valued. Our Development area started with the recruitment of three new managers for the Education, Juniors and Youth areas. The Education area proved particularly busy this year with additional courses and the number of people participating on the increase. Our Youth were involved in many activities and once again had a very successful River Cruise, which had a very big attendance, especially from Country Clubs. Our Juniors were very busy with an increase in numbers and a number of age group manager changes. They performed very well in all areas and we continue to see the enjoyment these children get from achieving their goals in, sometimes, very demanding conditions. Thank you very much to the large number of members who volunteer many hours to make sure this area of the Club can continue to be a success.

President’s Report | Continued

The Surf Sports area continued to grow this year, with the Boat section taking on a bit of a revival. We had a number of successes across this area with simply outstanding results, including winning the Lifesaver relay at the State Championships. Overall our senior competitors improved their placing to 3rd this year. Our performances at the Australian Championships were simply exceptional with only a very small team this year making the journey to Queensland. With the Australian championships moving to the Sunshine coast next season, we are looking forward to a big touring team.

This Club is very fortunate to have a council that is very supportive of all the activities that we embrace. The relationships with the Councillors and executive enable us to work together to achieve outcomes for our membership and the community that are the envy of many Clubs. We have signed another three year agreement with the City of Joondalup (CoJ) who continue to be a great partner with support of $60,000 per year. This money helps us to fund our community support with equipment for lifesaving duties and helps us with the costs of running such a large organisation. As mentioned above, with the great support from the CoJ, we hope to see our first floor refurbishment project off the ground next season.

This year we brought on a number of new sponsors through the work of the Marketing team. Our major new sponsor this year was Advance Formwork and it is great to have Mark and Lisa Bergin on board. They have been great members for

many years and have now got involved as a major sponsor for the next three years. We have many existing sponsors and, with the introduction of the Business Club, we hope to introduce more business to our Club. We thank all of our sponsors, large and small.

Surf Life Saving WA continue to provide exceptional support for the Club with their contribution of more than $11,000 from fundraising and other activities, continues to help with our running costs. This year we also received additional support from Surf Life Saving Australia with Federal funding from the Beach Equipment Safety Fund, which allowed us to purchase four new rescue boards to assist with training and patrols.

This has been my third year as President, and I continue to enjoy the role and the challenges that arise. The rewards of working with such dedicated people on the Board, Executive Committee and the Management team are exceptional. I look forward to achieving more outcomes for our members and providing an ever improving service to the community next season. We have many challenges ahead with our building refurbishment and planned organisational changes to support the future needs of this Club and its members. I hope that you will join me in some way to make this Club better.

Once again, thank you to everyone who has offered their time to this Club and the community.

See you on the Beach.

This year, two special Club members received their National Service medal for 15 years of recognised service to Lifesaving. Barbara Carter and Mark Hills were both nationally recognised for their service to this Club and surf lifesaving in general.

Barbara has been a Director of Youth, Director of Lifesaving, General Manager of Operations, Patrol Captain for 13 years, Official, Coach, Trainer and Assessor. She was involved in the development of the Surf Life Saving training manual over the years, to mention just a few of her contributions.

Mark has been Director of Lifesaving, President for 5 years, on the Board of Directors, Patrol Captain, Trainer, Assessor, Official and Coach. He has been a training consultant for SLSWA, Safety coordinator at State carnivals and the Australian Surf Championships. Mark is current chairperson of the Lifesaving Advisory Committee for SLSWA.

Mark and Barbara join our other 3 recipients David Cronk, Steve Dargie and Anne-Marie Widermanski and is a credit to the strong commitment shown by our volunteers and the effort they put into lifesaving services provided to our community.

The National Service medal recognises long and diligent service by members of recognised Government and voluntary organisations that risk their lives or safety to protect or assist the community. This includes organisations such as ambulance, emergency, fire, and police forces as well as lifesaving or search and rescue groups.

6 MULLALOO SLSC 2014/15 ANNUAL REPORT

One of aims of the Board is to ensure that the Club has the

most effective governance framework in place to best meet

the needs of the Club. Having the right structures, rules and

procedures in place will help to drive the best organisational

performance while at the same time aiding conformance

with organisational, legal and government requirements.

There is an increasing complexity in the operating

environment for most organisations, but in particular

volunteer organisations, with increased governance and

reporting requirements. The Board believes that the Club

is rising to these challenges. Management is achieving the

organisations purpose and mission whilst being efficient,

effective and sustainable. The Club continues to evolve in

this changing environment, using best practise principles

and learnings.

The Board’s time is divided between strategy, managing

funding, reviewing performance, risk oversight and

compliance. The Board has also been busy engaging with

external stakeholders (Local, State and various associations).

The previous changes to the Board structure, with

Directors, has proven to be best practice in the Not For Profit

(NFP) sector.

The Board continues to work with the Executive Committee

and the Management team to ensure we are all focused on

what is important. Whilst acknowledging that there is a lot

more work to be done, the club is on track and well placed

for future growth and expansion of membership, as well as

providing lifesaving services to the community.

The board is also targeting areas for future development. We

are looking for better ways to utilise technology on the beach

and within the administration of the club. Innovation, with

the collaboration with Curtin University – Centre for Marine

Science and Technology (CMST), on Shark Tag detection and

developing Sonar capabilities is world first.

Key achievements in 2014/15

• Focusing on longer term strategies to 2023 – across fivekey themes (One club, delivering services, sustainableoperations, financial viability, growing relationships) todevelop initiative for the Club.

• Formalised reporting structures have been implemented based on corporate and Not For Profit organisationsbest practice.

• Further developed relationships with Council, StateGovernment and relevant Associations.

• Continued with plans for the redevelopment of ourinternal clubrooms. These plans have progressed to aproposal, submitted to the Council (Building Committee). With good spending controls, we have been able to savemore for our future building works.

• Further enhanced governance frameworks – accounting, finance and equipment rigour/compliance.

• Communications protocols have been established toimprove member information sharing.

• Emergency signage at beach pathways progressed withCouncil.

• Shark mitigation work with Curtin University on SharkTag detection implemented. (Mullaloo is now the firstswimming beach in the world to have full tag detectionalong the main beach.)

• Constitution and By-laws updated to ensure congruencyand compliance to laws (Liquor and Gaming).

• Asset replacement planning built into budgets enablingfuture planning of costs.

We are working on improving clarity regarding roles and responsibilities. We will continue to work on this area to get continuous improvement, with the changing needs of the Club and the availability of volunteers. The management structure is being reviewed to make sure that we can support our on-going needs.

The Board’s effectiveness has been focused on the careful forward planning of the Club’s financial future. Financial

sustainability has been a key focus of the Board this year and future initiatives will have a large emphasis in this area. Improved financial information and budgeting processes are now in place, to allow better information to the Board, which aids decision-making. This enhances the capacity and capabilities of the Club through responsible decision-making throughout the organisation.

Another key area is to reduce the reliance of member’s fees. To be able to do this we have had to look at alternate income streams that provide a low risk to our Club. With ageing facilities and infrastructure, it is clear that a refurbishment of the first floor is needed. This will not only maximise the benefit of great club rooms for our members, but also allow us the opportunity to focus on other income streams. These include the re-establishment of Mullaloo SLSC as a premier events venue directly on the coast and the introduction of a café facility that will see us share our iconic location with the wider community.

A feasibility study was commissioned that considered other clubs along the coast, assessing their commercial needs, successes and failures and applying the best formula for Mullaloo SLSC.

The first floor refurbishment will install a commercial café, fit out the hall so that it can be more appropriate for training, community and function space and create a new and contemporary Member’s Lounge, which will also see the reclaiming of the concrete pad to the south of the Club for a family friendly barbeque area. One of most exciting components includes a staircase that will wrap around the outside of the tower, providing our members with direct access from the beach to the lounge.

The cost for this redevelopment has been identified at $1.7 million.

Due to the diligent work of the entire leadership group over the past few seasons, the Club has found ourselves to be in a strong financial position and, as stated at last year’s AGM, is in the position to contribute in excess of $350,000 towards this redevelopment. The remainder of the funds will hopefully come from current negotiations with the City of Joondalup and future negotiations with Lotterywest. Other sources will also be considered in the coming months.

The opportunities that this redevelopment will provide are vitally important to us over the coming years. The funds raised will enable the Club to further expand our reach along the coast line, ensuring greater safety to all who visit. We will have the opportunity to build a reserve account that will assist us with future expansions or developments and it will give us the chance to be responsive to new initiatives within our club and community providing Opportunities for Life.

The Board would like to thank the Building Refurbishment sub-committee for all their hard work over the past 12 months.

THANK YOU

INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY

MULLALOO SLSC BUSINESS DIRECTORY

The Club continues to develop a number of technology initiatives. This year we have introduced the Mullaloo SLSC Business Directory which Sponsors, Members and Local Businesses pay a small fee to the Club and advertise their business in. The businesses can also provide special offers to our members. The directory will be of great benefit to our members by providing discounts and in turn to the businesses, by providing them support. The directory can be accessed from any computer or smartphone at directory.mullaloosurf.com.au.

This initiative has been developed out of the Marketing Area and the fundraising committee. Particular thanks for the design, development and implementation to Helen Kay, Sandy Clarke, Carlo Tenaglia, Tung U and Jenni Vilé.

SHARK DETECTION

We have continued to develop our Shark Detection System and have now extended our detection area to a second detector. This has been deployed approximately 500m north of the Club which means that we can monitor for tagged sharks along one kilometre of beach in front of the Club and to the north. With the current Dept of Fisheries detectors which are located to the North and South of the Club, we have an array of detectors which covers more than one square kilometre. The shark detection system has now been integrated with our tower siren and detections by the system will automatically signal to our siren and our patrols any shark detections. The system is designed to make sure the siren is not sounded during the night, but will operate every day even when patrols are not present. This year there were a number of detections from the fisheries detectors and two detections from ours. The system is continuing to be developed by Kim Allen, Ed Neilan, Carlo Tenaglia and Lee Rewell. Thanks to Jordan Puchar for the electrical installation of the equipment.

The Club is also working with Curtin University – Centre for Marine Studies and Technology looking at SONAR technology as a further detection method. A number of SONAR systems have been trialled and further work will continue this year with this technology looking for the best solution for our beach.

MULLALOO SLSC 2014/15 ANNUAL REPORT 9

The area of Operations was very rewarding this year as the club performed many roles on and off the beach. Firstly, the professionalism of our rostered patrols was displayed in a number of rescues performed throughout the season. Our area of responsibility was again revised as first aids were performed as far off the beach as the Dome Café. The club also extended its services to Abalone fishermen and to the various schools, triathlons and other sporting events that regularly request our professional services. Having also rostered patrols in April again showed our commitment to beach goers. There were many fine weekends and public holidays that were well patrolled during this month.

One of the projects to come to fruition was the coastal signs and emergency locators along our coastline. These signs were installed in April this year after nearly a year’s consultation with the City of Joondalup, SLSWA and St John Ambulance. Now we have individual locators at each pathway and car park, enabling emergency services to pin point the exact location of an incident. More education and awareness will follow to update club members and the public on these locators.

Being part of the Building Committee last season was also rewarding, especially the initial planning and scoping stages. This was a long process involving some third parties. The end result, I’m sure you will agree is a step forward for the club and paves the way for our future.

With increased patronage on our beaches, especially at North Point, we are looking at a semi-permanent presence at the “cool” end of the beach in the medium term. This will further enhance the club’s presence on the beach and further extend our services for the City of Joondalup.

Another future project we are looking at is to use more electronic means to gain efficiencies in the way we do things. One example of this is the logging of patrol and water safety hours which currently involves a lot of manual paperwork. Another is the new digital radios that will be rolled out this season. This will enable SMS transmissions between users and Surfcom, which can further reduce radio traffic.

Of course, my biggest thanks to Andrew Manning and the Lifesaving Committee who make it all happen on the beach. Also to SLSWA who provide guidance in all areas of life saving.

10 MULLALOO SLSC 2014/15 ANNUAL REPORT10 MULLALOO SLSC 2013/14 ANNUAL REPORT

The Lifesaving portfolio has been a pleasure to manage again this season, thanks to the dedicated patrolling members that have accumulated an amazing 8,550.5 patrolled hours this season.

While the number of major incidents was down, our lifesavers were involved in a number of first aid incidents. During, as well as outside of rostered hours and to the credit of our education and training team once again provided a smooth transition to advance care of the patient, that is hand over to ambulance.

In response to a request by the majority of Patrol Captains at the end of last season, I altered this season’s roster by returning to two shifts per day. This allowed me to maintain a constant 4 hour shift with start and finish times locked into more reasonable hours. The later start in April means that we don’t clash with the Council lifeguard. While providing the beach going public with an extended service. We will continue to monitor the need and conditions in a proactive manner.

Season 2013/14 saw the retirement of many patrol captains. I would like to express my thanks and appreciation to: Leanne Kelleher, Kathryn Murray, Ian Allen, Tony Greenfield and Steve Dargie, for the many years of service to the club in this role.

The best solution to my need for so many new captains was to reduce the number of patrol groups back to the original 12. This reduction in groups meant we needed to be on thebeach every 3 weeks. It was only after much consultation and discussion at the end of last season, that the Captains decided a return to two shifts per day is the best option for our club.

Benefits of this change are:

1) Reduce the total number of shifts per season, even withrostered patrols in April.

2) Less disruption to your weekend with no midday shift.

3) Improved team management, Vice Captains now able toschedule more training or scenarios during shift.

4) To encourage and maintain alertness, members can take ashort break as directed by the Captain.

5) Only rostered 10 shifts for the season.

6) Some months only one shift rostered.

7) Less staff change-overs during the day, reduced parkinghassles.

Many thanks to the newer patrol captains, as Kevin Fettes and Craig Thrum took over my beloved “Kirra” in 2014. These guys have brought together a great team.

This season saw Rick Corkill retire from Wiamea and the Radio Officer role, positions held for longer than I can recall. Thanks to Rick’s preparation, Christie Harvey took on the role of Captain without hesitation.

It is great to have so many younger people taking on these roles and please consider whether you could be right for a team management position in Lifesaving.

Barbara Carter, wow I could probably have dedicated my complete report to Barbara’s involvement and commitment to the Club. I know there wouldn’t be too many lifesavers in the club that Barbara hasn’t trained, assessed or mentored during the many hours and years shared with us and the Mullaloo community. Barbara has retired as Captain of Strickland and we look forward to Andrew Gillies steering the group next season.

Lifesaving would be impossible to run without the assistance of the Lifesaving Committee. Our first aid supplies have been checked and restocked weekly by Tracey Tenaglia again this season.

Tracey sourced the big red bags, which have enabled us to bring the oxygen and defibrillator gear together in the one backpack, (a change made following review of critical incidents). We will be replacing the plastic first aid boxes with a backpack, as a more suitable option in our environment.

Water safety, for club day Sunday was skilfully handled by John Hillen, assisted by John Dooley, always ensuring a smooth safe day’s activities.

The members that have provided water safety at carnival and club days – a BIG thank you.

My respect and gratitude also goes out to you, the 200+ patrolling lifesavers that racked up more than 16 rostered patrol hours and the efforts of the top 50. It’s not that difficult a group to get into.

Abalone Patrol was supported by a small but dedicated team of hard core lifesavers. This patrol provided coverage in two locations, north of Ocean Reef Marina from 7–8 am every first Sunday of the month for the six sessions allowed by the Department of Fisheries. Even our President (Carlo Tenaglia), was involved in two rescues with good outcomes. Radio communications were great this year and set to improve next season. As the new digital communications system is rolled out.

With the large events (Masters, Country Carnival) that took place on our beach, it was great to have the support of the committed IRB drivers and crew. Repairs by Guy Edwards and team.

The larger beach tyres fitted to the Hilux has improved the vehicles capabilities on beach. However, the salt has ravaged both the ATV and the Hilux with major servicing planned at the end of April when patrolling is completed. Thanks to Kevin Fettes.

Trevor Bulley was kept busy repairing boards. Please take care when taking rescue boards in and out of the racks. Younger members need assistance and shouldn’t be left to get the boards away on their own.

Congratulations to all the members of “Patrol of the Year” and Mark Hills “Lifesaver of the Year” without a doubt well deserved. All the members nominated for awards congratulations, we the community are the biggest winners!

Thanks for a great season, see you on the beach soon!

12 MULLALOO SLSC 2014/15 ANNUAL REPORT

The portfolio managers from the 2013/14 season had all moved on to other areas of the club, with Dawn Jones and Gayle Gould moving to the surf sports/coaching arms and Lucy Cleary to greater work commitments. This required some recruiting to be carried out by the retiring managers and myself.

We have been fortunate enough to have Jackie Eley step up to the role of Manager of Junior Development. Jackie spent several months, early in the season, getting to know the role. She has introduced several changes so far, which have helped in streamlining the Sunday morning programme. Jackie is currently working on defining the Managers, Committee and AGM roles for the upcoming season.

Tayla Tenaglia stepped up into the role of Manager of Youth Development, which was a natural progression for her, after spending several years on the Committee. There have been camps, river cruises and nights out that have involved our youth members and members from other clubs. They have all been very successful with some great feedback.

The Education portfolio was undertaken by Rachael Crabb. This very challenging role has been well managed by Rachael and the Education Panel. There has been a fantastic number of new bronze and SRC candidates trained and assessed and all the other education areas are progressing well, with courses continuing through the winter period.

I would like to thank all the managers for taking on these challenging roles in this portfolio. I would particularly like to congratulate both Tayla and Rachael for stepping up to management positions and setting leadership standards for other youth members to aspire too.

EDUCATIONRachael Crabb | Manager Education

Oops, I blinked and the season was over! This 2014/15 season has been an absolute whirlwind of a season, I won’t lie… Mullaloo Education Manager is a big job, but I have loved every minute of serving my Club. This season kicked off with our winter courses, running May through to August, and summer courses picking up from August though to March – so we don’t really stop!

Thank you to the Trainee Trainers, Trainers, Assessors, the office staff and other assistants who have facilitated the running of courses this season. My upmost thanks go to the Mullaloo Education Panel, who work behind the scenes to ensure our courses actually happen and run as smoothly as can be for our members. The 2014/15 Education Panel consisted of:

Anne-Marie Widermanski (Assessor Coordinator)

Helen O’Brien (BM Training Coordinator)

Anthony Greenfield (IRB Training Coordinator)

Vivienne Greenfield (Training Coordinator).

This season, Mullaloo SLSC members have totaled a whopping 1,777 new awards for the 2014/15 season (Could we crack the 2000’s next season?). Welcome to 83 new Bronze Medallions (BM), 80 new Surf Rescue Certificates (SRC), 41 new Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificates (ARTC), 59 new Senior First Aiders (SFA), 7 IRB Crew and 4 IRB Drivers. Well done all. We also have 7 new members with the Spinal Management award and 20 new members qualified with

Pain Management. We have 6 new trainers and 3 new assessors to add to the Mullaloo education ranks. Congratulations on your new awards.

Re-Qualifications – we had a large number of our members up-date their awards and are again proficient for another season. The total numbers were: 418 Bronze Medallion, 93 ARTC, 153 SRC, 156 Spinal Management, 68 IRBC, 36 IRBD and 37 Senior First Aid. There were also 19 Assessors and 31 Trainers that have re-qualified their education awards this 2014/15 season.

SURF RESCUE CERTIFICATE (SRC)

Overall we had a great number of both ‘kids’ (usually U14’s) and adult SRC’s through this season. The SRC course is generally undertaken by U14s but it was great to see so many adults completing the SRC course also – some even going on to do their Bronze Medallion this season! The SRC is a great course to get your toes into the surf rescue environment, get some fitness up, and learn aquatic rescue techniques, CPR, signals/communication and first aid. Thank you trainers – Lyn Brosens, Lloyd Brosens, Sandy Clarke, Guy Edwards, John Hillen, Mark Hills, Tracey Tenaglia, Carlo Tenaglia, and Jenni Wood.

BRONZE MEDALLION (‘BRONZIE’)

The Bronze Medallion course, which runs for a 6-8 week duration, gives candidates the skills and confidence required to become a very valuable member of a patrolling team. On top of the SRC program, Bronzies also learn spinal rescue techniques, IRB awareness, higher standard of first aid, CPR, including oxygen administration, and are required to meet a tougher fitness standard. Well done and thank you to the Bronze trainers who were responsible for progressing candidates through one or more of the 5 Bronze courses: Tracey Tenaglia, Carlo Tenaglia, Jenni Wood, Anthony Greenfield, Vivienne Greenfield, Phill Dee, Mark Hills, Maren Scriven, Helen O’Brien, Rebecca O’Brien, Anna Young, Simon Gidley, Tayla Tenaglia, Alistair Cook, Lyn Brosens and Sandy Clarke.

SENIOR FIRST AID (SFA)

The Senior First Aid can be a natural progression for Bronze Medallion and SRC holders, or you can participate in this course without any pre-requisites. So, it’s a good one if you still want to participate in lifesaving and patrols – without having to get wet – much! This is also a nationally recognized and accredited training course, which remains valid for 2 years. This course was trained/facilitated by Bernadette Flint and Anne-Marie Widermanski.

INFLATABLE RESCUE BOAT CREW IRB CREW (IRBC)

The IRB crew and driver courses run through the ‘off season’ to allow candidates the opportunity to train in the more challenging conditions we experience during winter. It is the IRB crew person’s responsibility to maintain the balance and trim of the boat, physically undergo IRB rescues (deep water and surf zone) and is responsible for spotting for the driver.

IRB DRIVER (IRBD)

The IRB driver course is probably the most challenging and adrenaline pumping course Mullaloo has to offer (I am speaking from personal experience, having completed my IRBD this season). It is the drivers’ responsibility to maneuver the power craft through the surf, direct their ‘crewie’ and maintain care of the motor (even after rolling the boat… and flooding the engine). Trainers, we thank you for coaching candidates through both the IRBC and IRBD: Anthony Greenfield, Phill Dee, Guy Edwards, Alistair Cook and Roger Gregson.

Welcome to the 7 new ‘Crewies’ for the 2014/15 season:

Mark Anderson, Tacey Clarke, Rachael Crabb, Ryan Gannon, Andrew Gillies, Thomas Hillen and Christopher Swallow.

Welcome to the 4 new ‘Drivers’ for the 2014/15 season:

Jo-Anne Bulley, Rachael Crabb, Eric Fortmann and Andrew Gillies.

TRAINING OFFICER AWARD

The training officer award is one that is a great accomplishment. Without qualified trainers, none of the above would be possible. Well done to the Trainee Trainers who progressed through to achieve their TO. This course is one which takes a whole lot of time and commitment to training. We look forward to you participating in training our members in the seasons to come!

Welcome to the 6 new Training Officers for the 2014/15 season:

Tacey Clarke, Alistair Cook, Grace Giglia-Smith, Roger Gregson, Carlo Tenaglia and Jenni Wood.

ASSESSOR AWARD

Congratulations to the new Mullaloo Assessors. With this award comes great power and great responsibility! Well done for putting in the hours to become qualified as a SLS education assessor. I’m sure we will put you to work very soon for the purposes of assessing candidates from Mullaloo and from other SLS clubs up and down the west coast.

Welcome to the 4 new Assessors for the 2014/15 season;

Lloyd Brosens, Phill Dee, Simon Gidley and Vivienne Greenfield.

JUNIOR DEVELOPMENTJackie Eley | Manager Junior Development

When I took on this role, a good friend of mine passed on some words of wisdom. ‘Never follow somebody else’s path; it doesn’t work the same way twice for anyone.’ And so the journey began. I likened the season to a steeplechase race – a couple of non-starters, some falling at the first hurdleand a number of withdrawals along the way, but what was guaranteed was the majority passing across the finish line. With over 580 children enrolled in the nipper program, the season was always guaranteed to present challenges but the general feeling this season is that our members were happy with the service the club has provided. The first season in the role has given me an opportunity to review current administrative processes, look at ways to make improvements and implement new ways of working.

The season has many highlights for me, starting with the U14 “Catch a Wave” camp to Lancelin. The kids had a ball and it went without a hitch. It was a real testimony to the level of respect the kids have for Mike Bubrzycki, Myles Laing and the parent volunteers.

Moving the U7-U10 Halloween Disco to a Christmas event saw our club lounge and hall packed to the rafters with generations of families enjoying all that our club has to offer. Terry Upston and Laura Stumpers aka ‘Mr & Mrs Claus’ put on a great show, a real crowd pleaser. What a night!

I was never sure what response we would get when we announced the return of the Christmas Eve paddle. I anticipated maybe 20 members turning up, 30 if we were lucky. I was totally overwhelmed when over 120 members participated that morning on every surf craft imaginable. What a great way to bring a community together.

Then in January the competition side ramped up. With 4 carnivals in 5 weeks, could this be a record breaker? A number of you, who attended every carnival, will have travelled 1,764 km over the season! It is important to acknowledge the commitment and dedication during this period shown by the AGMs across all ages, Competition Officials, Coaches, Water Safety personnel, volunteer kitchen staff, bar staff, parents and kids competing. I also wish to mention Life Members and former Presidents Mark Hills and Anne-Marie Widermanski, who have maintained a presence at Junior Carnivals. They have so much knowledge and experience and they are always happy to share. At the

State titles the kids achieved outstanding results, tackling a heavy program that would have proved a challenge for any Ironman. The club finished second overall, a testimony to the true grit and determination shown by our competitors.

Education is the key element to all that we do, from the U7’s through to the U14’s. The U7’s next season will transition from a Surf Play Program to a Surf Aware Program, becoming accustomed to the surf beyond the break. Our U14’s acquired their SRC qualification and for the first time were able to officially start patrolling. I have sincerely enjoyed their company this season. Don’t become strangers.

It is our volunteers that I owe the biggest thanks of all. Without their efforts and contribution our club would not be the successful community hub that it is today. It is a collective effort of many and not just the workings of one that make things happen.

Finally, the Junior program will continue to evolve in order to meet the needs of our members and respond to a changing environment. I am looking forward to working with you all in the 2015/16 season.

U14 BOYS | MYLES LAING

What a great season for the U14 boys. It was the accumulation of what has been, for many, quite a few years in Mullaloo Juniors. I am extremely proud of how the boys grew and developed into fine young men over their journey from U7’s until now. They have learned a lot over the years, which will allow them to go forward into Mullaloo Seniors with a strong feeling of belonging and determination. Something the boys have consistently demonstrated over the season.

All the boys completed their SRC and proved that they can be great representatives and patrolling members of the club.  They grew as a group and developed their skills in team work, through the challenges they faced at their camp and on the beach, having fun and building lasting friendships along the way. The boys have always shown great enthusiasm in whatever has been asked of them, which has been evident in their achievements and I am glad to have been there to share their journey.

A special thanks to our Assistant AGM Ian Curry and Angela Mitchell in her role as liaison and to all the parent helpers for all their support over the years!

U14 GIRLS | MIKE BUBRYZCKI

At 13, these girls are highly valued members of Mullaloo. They serve their community, patrolling the beach, making it safer for all and have spent the past 8 summers building friendships that will last a lifetime.

This year was full of highlights, starting early in the season with the Lancelin camp. A great time was had by all and the U14s were excellent ambassadors for this Club.

Abbi Fulcher, Caitlin Knight, Ellen Bubryzcki, Ellie Black, Lillyan Rosich, Temily Powell and Ciera Madden stepped up to take on leadership roles as carnival captains and Ellen, Caitlin and Olivia Allen also represented Mullaloo at the Rottnest TOAD camp.

Competition filled much of the season, culminating with the State Championships. With 17 girls competing, we had strong representation in most finals, earning the respect of the other Clubs for our ferocious competitiveness, great sportsmanship and camaraderie.

We are extremely proud of this group and look forward to their continued involvement in Mullaloo SLSC for many years to come. It has been an absolute pleasure watching you all grow up into the confident young ladies you are today. Thank you for making me smile every Sunday morning for the last 8 years.

Life’s a BEACH. Congratulations to you all.

U13 BOYS & GIRLS | JACKIE ELEY

This season the U13 boys and girls group joined forces and it was great to see how the kids adapted to this approach. There were many benefits, including friendship building

and stereotype smashing! This group had a great season, with many achieving their own personal goals, building on already acquired surf skills and surf life saving knowledge, in what can be considered, at times, very challenging conditions in the water. Yes, those pesky swarms of stingers!

Those that were new to the Club showed no fear and embraced the whole ethos of surf life saving. For the competitors, they were exposed to another dimension of surf life saving that had a number placing in a medal winning position for the first time and personal best performances. All this was achieved by hours of training, conquering fear of big surf, determination and sheer hard work. Well done!

All kids who competed and attended Sunday mornings are to be commended for their efforts and willingness to represent Mullaloo Surf Club in an environment that truly fosters a sense of team spirit and camaraderie. It has been a privilege to be involved in the development of this group.

Next season, as an U14 club member, with an SRC qualification in hand, we will see this group transition from a nipper to one of those dedicated life savers of Mullaloo. They will go from relying on the Club Patrol to look after their safety and wellbeing whilst in the water to achieving their goal and proudly wearing the patrol uniform, watching over future generations of surf life savers coming through the ranks.

I have to thank the assistants for their support this season - Alex, Kyle, Sam, Amanda, Lewis, Simone and Maxine, and to Kriss Bell as liaison officer. To the parents who volunteered as water safety on club days and mid week (Kirsten you are a real trooper) and for undertaking the less glamorous volunteer tasks. I thank you all. Finally, special thanks to the Brett’s. You are true motivators!

U12 BOYS | ANDREW COMPSON

The 2014/15 season saw this group of U12 boys develop their inter-personal relationships as a group. It was very evident that the boys represented all that is good about team and individual sports. They supported each other and ensured that nobody was left out on the fringes of the group.

They began the season working hard to get their overall fitness levels up and finished the season continuing to provide 110%, whilst participating in all Club, Carnival and State events.

I hope that this group of boys shall continue to do well and develop next season as U13s and wish them every success as

they strive to become the next generation of surf life savers!

Winning isn’t everything, but wanting to win is. –Vince Lombardi

U12 GIRLS | JO BULLEY AND JAKE LIBBIS

Well it’s hard to believe another season has just gone by! Taking over this group of girls for the season was destined to be fun and we both have really enjoyed being part of the girls’ development in surf life saving. We witnessed the less confident and new recruits at the start of the season demonstrate willingness to push themselves out of their comfort zone each week and show that a “have a go” attitude really does bring on results. We hope each girl took away a new and/or improved skill this season.

For the competitors, we had good attendance numbers at carnivals and some amazing results at the Junior State Championships. Well done! Good luck to the girls as they transition to the U13 age group.

Finally, special thanks to Bronwyn Bulley who managed the administrative tasks this season with such professionalism, and the parents who helped out with water safety. Thank you for being so willing to get wet every club day/carnival and at mid week training!

U11 BOYS | MATTHEW QUIN

The 2014/15 season was this group of boys’ first venture into formal competition and a chance to compete and qualify for the States Carnival. The result was a highly successful season with lots of points at the carnivals and a truck load of medals at the States. These boys demonstrated a high level of sportsmanship and mateship at all times and definitely showed their enthusiasm for the club as well as the sport. My congratulations to all of the boys who competed this season.

For the non-competition boys, I hope that you had fun learning the competition events as well as participating in the activities, games and surf skills. As a whole, the skills and confidence of our group improved significantly throughout the season and I am proud of the efforts that you made.

Many thanks in particular to Steve Lee and Michelle Cook for their efforts helping me manage the boys this season, as well as the parents who undertook water safety and helped run activities.

U11 GIRLS | SARA WARNER AND VICKI RASMUSSEN

Well, what a season! The U11 ladies have just come so far in all aspects of surf life saving. From those first few weeks that saw many of them so reluctant to get in and even do the swim, to the last week, where each and every one of them who lined up for the Junior Club Challenge completed the entire course! Joining with their parents, I couldn’t have been prouder of them.

The transition to U11s is huge. Suddenly there are competitions, extra training and lots and lots of swimming! This group of young ladies relished the challenge with an incredible sense of compassion and care for their team mates, and always with the biggest smiles on the beach!

We have appreciated the support from the Club, the parents, who have been wonderful and always ready to assist to the task at hand, and aIso to our AGM Assistants, Tabbetha, Maddie and Millie. Next season promises to deliver the skills sets and mental ability to nurture this amazing group of young people into becoming top surf life savers.

See you on the beach!

U10 BOYS | ANDREW BROWN

It has been another fantastic season this year, and I have really enjoyed the Sunday morning sessions on Mullaloo Beach. In our final year of Nippers, the boys split from the girls. With a regular attendance of about 31, we have progressed a significant core ready for the challenge of U11s and inter club carnivals next year.

Each week, as I challenged the boys with tough activities, even under some testing conditions, I was rewarded with obvious passion and courage from all levels. I have been tremendously heartened with the level of camaraderie and friendship. I have been awed at the confidence that they have clearly developed.

There has been significant improvement in skills on the beach, with some competitive flags tussles and sprint offs. In the surf we’ve focused on understanding the surf ‘close in,’ with our swimming, boarding and some challenging ironmen. We have also practiced board rescue races.

It’s been so great to have such reliable support from mums and dads with water safety and help on the beach. Your willingness and keen interaction is sincerely appreciated!

The ability of the boys to step up and take on the challenge, whilst encouraging each other through tough times, is something their parents can be well proud of. I certainly am.

See you next season!

U10 GIRLS | EMMA BAMFORTH

What a fantastic group of girls I had the pleasure of working with this year! It was so rewarding to watch the girls develop and improve throughout the season and watch their confidence grow. It was especially rewarding to watch those girls who were unsure of entering into the water at the beginning of the season, swim out around the cans without too much of a worry by the season’s end. A true indication of their commitment was to witness the girls going back into the water after being stung by those pesky stingers or being dumped by the wave of the day. Their confidence, enthusiasm and determination was inspiring. It was also great to see new friendships form amongst the girls and the comradery that follows.

This year we focussed on technique and skills development, particularly on the boards and beach events, as well as practising a number of carnival events, putting these skills to the test. The iron women events were always one of the girl’s favourite activities, as were the days when we competed against the U10 boys, and won of course! It was also great to see so many of the girls attend the mid-week board training sessions, which were often conducted in pretty rough and windy conditions.

I have to say a big thank you to Chelsea for all her help this year and to all the parents who assisted me throughout the season. Andy, Paul, Deb, Leslie and David, just to name a few, I could not have done it without you.

I am looking forward to an exciting 2015/16 season with our age groups introduction into the world of competition. We have some real champions in the making!

U9’s | CHRIS SWALLOW AND ANDRE VILLEMIN

Whoa what a summer!

We started the year on a rainy wet Sunday which, thank goodness, didn’t dampen the spirit.

Firstly, I wish to thank to all of our fantastic volunteers for your great work this season, well done! To our very energetic manager, Jackie, beach set up crew, water safety and the club patrol – all truly amazing. Special thanks to the five AGMA’s... and for the great work done in the trenches throughout the season.

I have been constantly amazed with the kids’ development, challenging their limits, building confidence in the water, developing a respect of the ocean and more importantly having lots of fun.

They all had different starting points this year but proved to us that with the right attitude and positive frame of mind, anyone can develop their surf skills and awareness on the beach.

I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of the journey for this amazing group of children, and after only a few days of winter I am already looking forward to next summer.

It’s been a pleasure.

Development – Junior Development | Continued

U8’s | ROSS TWYFORD

Around 80 kids made up the U8s group of junior lifesavers this year, with many nippers returning from U7s, and a number of new faces also, who formed a welcome addition to the group.

After a tentative beginning and some cold conditions at the season start, it didn’t take long before everyone was diving through hoops and under waves again. The kids enjoyed a variety of water and beach based games and activities, with the focus on learning water safety and building confidence in the water.

By the end of the season, the kids were swimming up to 50m around the buoys, had learnt to negotiate the shore break on a surf board, paddle out to the cans, and paddle safely back to shore again. This has laid a good foundation for the further emphasis that will be placed on swimming and surf board skills next season.

I would like to acknowledge the great help and support that was provided to my U8s group by Jackie Eley, our fantastic Manager of Junior Development, plus the parents and the club committee.

See you all again next season!

U7’s | LAURA STUMPERS AND SIMONE PASTOR

Building confidence, educating and having fun was our intention this season and, with 98 mighty U7’s registered, we hope we achieved just that. The surf play program is designed to build confidence in shallow water and educate on general beach safety. The weekly programs covered basic first aid and the children got to meet patrolling surf lifesavers,

giving some meaning into what the long term objective of being a nipper is all about. It was very rewarding to witness how confidence levels improved. As the end of the season drew closer the mighty U7’s demonstrated a high level of competency both in the sand and water.

All of this was achieved with the positive help and support from parents, water safety, AGMA’s and of course Graham and Mary Jane Webb, the original AGM’s.

The children will transition to the U8 program next season with the basic skills required that include beach flags, sprints, relay techniques, wading and dolphin diving.

We look forward to seeing you all back on the beach next season and hopefully the first club day will bring with it beautiful sunshine!

YOUTH DEVELOPMENTTayla Tenaglia | Manager Youth Development

The youth members of Mullaloo SLSC are the future of our Club and their enthusiasm towards surf life saving is what continues to drive that youthful essence we find on our beach. After many years of contributing as a Youth Committee member, this season I decided to take on the role as Manager of Youth Development, in the hope of acting as the voice for the youth members and ensuring that their enthusiasm is heard, as well as organising activities to have fun with their friends!

Our first social event of the season was a trip to Flip Out Trampolining World, where some of our youth realised there is other physically exhausting activities other than running or swimming. It was a great night for some of our newly senior U15 members, realising that we still have fun, even when we get older!

Another social event that was held later in the season was an interclub sundowner. After spending many hours on the sand at a carnival that day, we invited all club’s youth to attend a chilled evening of music, pizza and volleyball at Tom Simpson Park. With a great response from those attended, we hope to host more of these events next season.

Our annual South-West adventure camp was held again and despite a smaller than usual group of youth, the excitement levels and eagerness were just as high. We saw some people push past their fears to abseil down a cliff wall, overlooking surging waves. Others were gleaming with pride at the end of each day at their effort to complete the day’s task. Most enjoyed the giant marshmallows and a few had some interesting dancing skills that we hope to see again next year.

Two of the Club’s actively involved youth members, Paige Wood and Callum Knight, were chosen to attend this years SLSWA Rise Up camp. I was also lucky enough to attend as a group leader and I am proud to say that these two were exceptional representatives of the club. I hope that they enjoyed their time, meeting incredible, like-minded youth members from across WA and have gained a great insight into the power that the youth have in making a change.

This season the club was approached by the International Students coordinator for UWA, and in coordination with the Club’s Education department, we hosted a group of students from all corners of the world to learn about Surf Life Saving in Australia. With the help of the IRB racing group, the patrolling members and a few other youth members

(including our own adopted member Clara Thiede from Germany) we were able to show the group what we do as a Club and a community.

The highlight of the youth calendar is the interclub state Youth River Cruise, where they are given the opportunity to socialise with other Clubs in an environment other than when they are in their bathers. As the event had gained more interest, this year we supersized the boat and were able to have 120 members from 11 different clubs attend. Thanks to incredible organisation and support from the Youth Committee, the night was a massive success with positive feedback received from a number of those Clubs.

As the Manager of Youth Development I aim to support the youth members in a stage of their lives where they may struggle to identify themselves in the community and I encourage them all to recognise the power their ideas

MULLALOO SLSC 2014/15 ANNUAL REPORT 27

The Surf Sports portfolio has continued to grow in demands, with the changes in the timing of major events and increasing range of disciplines creating a longer season … in fact an all year program. This requires more resources, more assistance and more funding to achieve the surf sports goals of the Club.

One solution to this increasing demand has been the establishment of leadership groups. Ideally, there would be leadership groups for Water Craft (board, ski, ironman, surf board riding), Water (pool rescue, surf swimming, belt racing), Beach (sprints, flags, distance running, march past), Life Saving events (Rescue & Resuscitation, champion patrol, first aid, champion life saver), Surf Boats and IRB. Some of these have already been established and are operating well, such as the Surf Boat Leadership Group lead by Mark Platt and the IRB Racing Committee lead by Cameron Rapley.

These groups show promise because they can concentrate on developing their disciplines methodically and strategically with the support of the Coaching, Events and other services of the Club. I look forward to working with interested members to create and support more of these leadership groups in the Surf Sports portfolio.

These leadership groups will also offer a broader range of education and management pathways for volunteers and competitors in Surf Sports. I look forward to the Club supporting these groups with educational opportunities and resources to further their development.

Another solution to the increasing demand of the portfolio has been the new level of management, with the appointment of Gayle Gould in the Coaching Manager’s role and Dawn Jones in the new role of Event Manager. This allowed our dedicated coaching program to be developed and enhanced and the many events hosted by the Club to be managed separately and more efficiently. Thank you both for taking on these roles – very much appreciated. I look forward to working with you and others to deliver another great season for our Club’s surf sports.

SURF SPORTS EVENTS

Mullaloo beach was a busy venue for competition events this season. Not only did we have our schedule of regular club events but we hosted a number of carnivals and a Nipper Clinic.

MULLALOO CLUB EVENTS

SENIOR CLUB DAYCompetition is not what everyone wants to be part of, therefore Club Day is an important and inclusive time, aiming to cater for all interests and abilities. Thank you to Katrina West, Stuart Clarke, Jeff Baker, Carlo Tenaglia, Amanda Lee, Rhys Puchar, Jason Snell and Sandy Clarke who took turns coordinating club days over the season.

POINTS DAYS AND CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPSThese events provide good spirited and keen competition within the age groups. Carlo Tenaglia and Andy Jones did a sterling job in running these events. Results for these are listed on page 33.

MULLALCONDAThis three race option, marathon style race took place on 29 November. The conditions were well suited for this endurance style event. We had a good range of age groups competing both individually and in teams.

TED SCOTT MARATHONThis is a highlight in the club calendar. On 21 December, 94 of our members took on the whole course and all junior

groups completed some aspect of the course before the “man in the red suit” arrived on a surf boat. Top 10 results are listed on page 33, but it is worth noting that in that top 10, eight of the finishers were in the U15-19 age groups and two were masters, demonstrating the depth of competitors that we have in our club.

MULLALOO HOSTED EVENTS

Mullaloo was host to Round 2 of both the Board/Ski and Board/Swim series of SLSWA’s Pre-Season Cup. The elements threw some very challenging conditions at us for the Board/Ski, causing the event to be cut short. What was notable here was how club members pulled together and were responsible for a number of rescues, due to competitors losing their skis as the storm passed through. It was good to see that the business of keeping people safe and executing rescues over-rode the competition.

We also successfully ran an IRB Racing series – we actually had some surf for. Also, a Surf Boat rowing series which ran alongside Club day with minimal impact. Big thanks to the IRB and Surf Boat contingents for all your assistance.

WAVE WARRIORSIn November, the Club was proud that the award winning Wave Warriors organisers chose to return to Mullaloo for the WA leg of the national tour of the Medibank Wave Warrior Challenge on 22 November. This saw U11’s to U15’s

Ted Scott Marathon, seniors taking off!

competing with other clubs in an exciting competition format. Competitors were given advice as they raced, from ace commentator Ty Dowler and enjoyed the company of ironman Tanyn Lyndon and ironwoman Tara Coleman from the Nutri-Grain series. We look forward to hosting the event again in 2015.

NIPPER CLINICJust days after having had the privilege of having two top athletes on the beach, the junior members of the club had the opportunity to be expertly coached by Nutri-Grain athletes Harriet Brown, Tiarrn Raymond and Luke Cuff. Forty five Nippers attended the session, mostly from Mullaloo SLSC, but also a number of members of Quinns Mindarie SLSC joined in.

MASTERS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AT MULLALOOMullaloo had a big weekend on the 28 February and 1 March hosting the Masters State Championships, Beko Sunset Sprints Surf Boat Carnival and the Country State Championships.

With 387 competitors registered from 17 different clubs in the Masters event alone, there was plenty of cooking, officiating, water safety services, set ups and pack ups. Keeping it all together was a good workforce team fulfilling the various tasks which contributed to a very successful weekend.

FINALLY...Any kind of event held on the beach cannot happen without the support and assistance of club members in a wide range of roles. This is the hard bit as I am hoping that I have not missed anyone out on my lists that I have kept throughout the season. Apologies in advance for any missing names. Thank you to everyone who assisted with the running of events this season.

30 MULLALOO SLSC 2014/15 ANNUAL REPORT

On any given day, be it early morning or evening, one can witness numerous training sessions in action at Mullaloo Beach. At the helm of these sessions are volunteer coaches who give so freely of their time, energy and expertise to ensure that our competitors are prepared for competition. A true reflection of the values that are passed on from the coaches to our competitors are the endless compliments that we receive from Competition Officials of how obliging, enthusiastic, fair, thankful and well-mannered our Mullaloo Competitors are.

Many thanks go out to the first port of call for our Juniors – the Age Group Managers who provide the initial instruction to our young competitors, through to the midweek board and beach coaches who, usually in the howling wind, help to build on, expand and concrete the learning that has taken place. Using our tiered coaching system, participants are able to progress from one tier to the next when they have met certain criteria, meaning that there is a continual progression. This challenges our competitors to continually improve and work towards entry into the next tier, ultimately improving their performance.

There are many other areas for members to participate in competition and we acknowledge the work that all of the coaches have done in these areas to ensure success. Mullaloo Beachies are currently in short supply and this is an area that we are working on expanding over the coming seasons. Pool Rescue is a dynamic, challenging discipline that we are able to improve our participation in across all

age groups from Juniors to Seniors. Mullaloo’s boat section continues to flourish, with success at the Inter States, States and Aussies proving that hard work and dedication from coaches, sweeps and competitors do pay off in the end. The IRB Racing team are currently training hard on and off the water and are going from strength to strength, preparing for the imminent State Titles.

It is pleasing to see many of our young members taking up on the many ‘’Opportunities for Life’’, that Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club has to offer, volunteering to learn and take on coaching responsibilities across many disciplines.

A sincere thank you to everyone who has volunteered their time to coach in any of our many disciplines, also to the parents that volunteer to do water safety to ensure that training can go ahead.

Mullaloo surf sports competitors were active throughout the season, competing at most local, State, National and International events. Full details of our members’ results can be found on pp. 33-37. Overall the Club enjoyed a more successful year, finishing one place higher at third in the State Championships. I expect this will attract the return of existing members to surf sports and potentially tempt new members to step into the competition arena.

OFFICIALS

Thank you again to Andy Jones for coordinating the carnival officials for both junior and senior events. Congratulations also to the many newly qualified officials, having completed their training course including one run by Sandy Clarke.

OFFICIATING SERVICE AWARDSThis year will also see the first time that our Club’s coaches and officials will receive SLSA Recognition of Service Awards. This is an important way we can show our appreciation for the many volunteer hours generously offered by our Club members.

As an example of our members’ outstanding contributions to coaching and officiating, Alison Gerrard and Anne-Marie Widermanski were presented with their 20 year Officiating Service awards at the Club Annual Awards ceremony. Well done ladies!

MASTERS COMPETITION

It seems the winter Phat Chix training pays off when it comes to competition and general club activity. An increase of 117% in competition participation (63 competitors) and a far greater increase in club training and activities. Our Masters finished 3rd overall and proving we still have what it takes!!

STATE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

This year saw an increase of 142% participation in our senior competition with 170 competitors entered across the State Championships (includes IRB, Pool Rescue, Champion Lifesaver, Belt Racing, Surf Board Riding and Senior States). Finishing 3rd overall with some absolute standout medal tallies for some of our athletes – Wes Gould 29, Brett Gould 26, Jake Smith 20 and Ben Jones 17.

An increase in our competitors numbers, particularly open division are a positive reflection of the services offered and thus our retention efforts. It is always a whole team that collectively gets results!

STATE REPRESENTATIVES

We had some outstanding competitors who were selected to represent Western Australia at the inter-State competitions, including Brett Gould and Wesley Gould who competed late January. The ‘Steelers’ Under 19s Surf Boat Crew of Mathew Colbourne, Peter Hainsworth, Jack Vermeulen, Luke Worthington and swept by Mark Donnelly later selected and competed at the interstate championship in February. All having fantastic results which contributed to the WA team coming 3rd overall.

Surf Sports – Competition | Continued

Also selected for the State representative Development Squad were Brandon Paull, Kane Smith and Callan Smith who travelled with the State representatives and competed at the Manly and Freshwater Carnivals over the Australia Day long weekend. Great experience and good performances.

2015 AUSTRALIAN OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Our touring team to Queensland were treated to some special atmosphere this season, with the 100th year of the Aussies and the inaugural year for the Australian Youth Championships. The small touring team enjoyed some great success and, most importantly, a wonderful learning experience that has inspired many of them to strive for better results at next year’s Aussies on the Sunshine Coast.

2014 AUSTRALIAN POOL RESCUE CHAMPIONSHIPSA team of eight competitors travelled to Sydney 8-10 August, 2014. The competition in the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre was hot! Our team came home with bling in boxes and even a National record by Callan Smith. See pp. 33. Big thanks to Eric Smith who officiated all three days.

HIGH PERFORMING COMPETITORS

SLSWA selects individuals to join the State High Performance squad based on outstanding results of the previous season. Mullaloo had a number of athletes selected across the various tiers. Josh Clarke, Nic de Bomford, Brett Gould, Welsey Gould, Ben Jones and Jake Smith all gained free entry into SLSWA events and specialist training opportunities. Additionally, rising starts are also recognised at Tier 4 and afforded the same specialist training – Ben Hillen, Caitlin Knight, Brandon Paull, Kane Smith, Lachlan Twyford and Owen Vorster.

Mullaloo was able to provide some funds for two high performing surf boat crews to attend the Australian Surf Rowers League Australian Open in Shellharbour, NSW, along side our u19s state reps, all had good results.

2014 WORLD RESCUE – FRANCE

Mullaloo had ten competitors, nine of which were masters and one youth make the trek to France to compete at World Rescue. Fantastic results for such a small team, see pp. 37. All athletes were self funded and many enjoying the international spirit before and after competition.

FUNDRAISING

One of the benefits of having a Surf Boat Leadership Group was their increasing contribution to fundraising this season. Thank you for your efforts running the ‘meat raffles’ on Friday nights and the successful ‘oar raffle’ and associated business networking session. Equally, thank you to the IRB Racing Committee for organising their fundraising efforts.

Several others contributed to fundraising by taking advantage of Club hosted events by selling food and merchandise to the ‘captured audience’. Thank you.

Other ways that the surf sports section contributed to Club funds was through our competitors’ success at events, such as the pre-season cup and the Beko Surf Boat Sprint Series. Well done and thank you to those successful competitors.

MULLALOO SLSC 2014/15 ANNUAL REPORT 39

Another busy and rewarding year for the Support Services Team.

Tracey Tenaglia, our Administration Manager, continues to make improvements to the front of office with the aid of the office staff. Tracey employed a part time paid staff member, Jenni Vilé. Jenni’s role is to provide administration support as well as assisting the Marketing Manager with office support. Jenny Ducasse filled the vacant position left by the ever reliable Robyn Turnbull who relocated to the south west of WA. The Club wishes Robyn well with her move and acknowledges her contribution made to the running of the Club.

A busy year for Chetan Zavery our Finance Manager, making the Club’s move from a cash reporting basis to an accrual basis as smooth a transition as can be expected.

Garry Addison our Facilities manager has been active in ensuring our members are well fed and watered, not to mention entertained. Garry has also ensured our premises are in good repair, whilst the Board continues with its plan for refurbishing the first floor.

The Club has been fortunate to secure the services of Nicole Cassimatis as the Marketing Manager. Nicole has a long background in surf lifesaving on the east coast. Nicole has been tasked with securing and managing our sponsors and improving communication within all aspects of the Club.

Lyn Brosens our, Membership Manager, enrolled 1,876 members this busy season. Surf cage sales were a feature of the Clubs calendar this year as Lyn strived to keep our members well clothed. Did you miss out on a bargain?

Thank you to my managers, their families, and the volunteers within each of your portfolios for the enormous amount of time and effort put in to making 2014/15 such a success. I encourage all members to get involved in some way. It is such a rewarding experience.

If there is one word to describe the administration area this season it would be “busy”. On top of the day to day running of the Office, managing members and general public enquiries and the Club facilities, the Office took on some of our volunteer General Managers and Managers more time consuming workload. In August 2014 Jenni Vilé, Marketing and Administration Assistant, joined Karen Oliver, Office Manager and Jenny Ducasse, Administration Assistant in the Office. Having these three conscientious, hard working staff members has allowed us to continue our aim of providing continuity of service and professionalism, not only to our Club members but to all who visit our Club.

This season the Office has been busy assisting the Life saving area with the entering of all patrolling member’s patrol and water safety hours. The Office has also been working with the Education group to assist and co-ordinate the administration component of the education courses run throughout the year, allowing the Trainers to concentrate on the job of training. They also took on entering all of the Junior area’s swim and competition proficiencies and surf education awards, a requirement of SLSWA.

Our club newsletter is now being published and distributed through the Office, going out to members every fortnight. As always,

the newsletter is witty and informative. The newsletter and bulk emails, along with our Facebook page and website, are our main source of communication with our members, keeping them up to date with what is happening around the Club.

Thank you to the Office Staff for their hard work, patience and understanding throughout the year. I know working in a volunteer environment can be challenging.

As always, the Office on Sunday morning was managed by a dedicated group of ladies. This season two long term volunteers retired, Janice Doyle and Peg Davidson. Thank you for your assistance and hard work over the years. We miss your experience and knowledge of all things Surf Club. To the other three ladies who volunteer their time, thank you for your continued support and assistance.

MULLALOO SLSC 2014/15 ANNUAL REPORT 41

FACILITIESGarry Addison | Manager Facilities

There are a couple of things that, no matter how hard we try to accommodate for, they just seem to happen like clockwork. The first and probably the hardest to predict or control is ONGOING MAINTENANCE. With an ageing club like ours, we are always in a state of repair and maintenance. Last year we had the retirement of our ever loyal maintenance man George. However, another stalwart of the club, Willie, put his hand up and saved the day. Many thanks to Willie for saving my bacon and of course the club many dollars with your volunteer maintenance hours.

Second, is the number of people who are going to grace the club with their presence on Friday evenings. One Friday night 20, the next 100. We continue to try and get members to the club to use the facilities and especially watch the wonderful sunsets in Summer. I still can’t work out why a cold, cheap drink and a wonderful view can’t entice more people to use our facilities. My sincere thanks and gratitude to Cheryl Edwards for her many hours of time and effort to ensure the drinks are always plentiful and cold and there is always someone there to serve you, the members. Cheryl has worked tirelessly in the role this year to improve the Bar area and her hard work is paying off, I’m sure you will all agree. Many thanks Cheryl, you are appreciated much more than you think.

We had our usual calender of events this year, Grand Final day, New Year’s Eve and the return of the Quiz Night. All were extremely well received and patronised. Many thanks to those who supported these events and an even bigger thank you to those who assisted in the running, setting up and cleaning up of the events. We swapped Chase the Ace this year with a 100’s club raffle with nearly all tickets sold. There were 5 weekly winners along the way however, the major prize this year was won by the ever young, Peg Davidson who took home $2,500 cash. Congrats Peg. Watch out early in the season for our next 100’s club raffle……

Finally, many thanks to the volunteers who helped behind the bar, with setting and cleaning up of all social events. And of course the 3 (amigo’s) lovely ladies in the office, Jenny, Jenni and Karen whom, without their assistance, I probably would have got the sack. If that’s at all possible.

Our primary objective next year will be to get as many people down to utilise the facilities as we can and to try to improve our social calendar. However, we need everyone’s help. Word of mouth is the best advertisement. So, if you are a regular visitor on Friday nights or Sunday’s to the club please let other members know and entice them down. You never know, they also might enjoy it!

MARKETINGNicole Cassimatis | Manager Marketing

The 2014/15 season has been a positive and rewarding experience for the new Marketing team. Jenni Vilé and I are both new members to the Club this season, in addition to taking on the responsibility of Marketing the Club.

The Marketing portfolio touches on all areas of the Club and, as a couple of newbies, we have received terrific support from the Executive and Management Committee. Our priorities this year have been to establish some structure and process to all our sponsorship, fundraising and grants area, as well as increasing the frequency of the Club Newsletter.

We have developed a Sponsorship Package which details the various levels of sponsorship available, including Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze, depending upon the value of the support.

Our existing Sponsors have shown their confidence and support of our Club, whether by funding or providing goods and services. We acknowledge their faith and look forward to continuing our partnerships.

We’d like to acknowledge the City of Joondalup who continues to be our primary supporter, providing the Club with our current facilities and additional financial support. We look forward to further expansion of this support with the proposed new Clubhouse refurbishment.

The Club has also been fortunate to expand our Sponsorship family with Advance Formwork coming on board, donating funds to assist in purchasing a new Surf Boat for the coming 2015/16 season.

Greg Kelleher Homes, another new Sponsor has kindly donated funds which will assist with purchasing new tents for the Club.

We have also seen Eighty Seven Business Services donating funds for a new Sweep Oar.

The Boaties have been very proactive in their fundraising activities, with a successful Business’ Only Raffle run over the Christmas period. The winners had their logo advertised each on a set (4) of oars. Congratulations to 360 Logistics, Groundforce Rentals and Marineline Boat Builders!

A new and enthusiastic fundraising committee has been busily setting up a Mullaloo SLSC Business Club. The Business Club is a new initiative for Mullaloo and provides

an environment where local business owners are able to network together, to generate new opportunities for both themselves and Mullaloo SLSC. We are developing a new directory App for Business Club members which will be fully functional very soon. The inaugural Sundowner event on the afternoon of the Masters State Titles was very successful with over 30 Businesses attending. Many of the attendees are new to the Surf Life Saving environment and were excited about the prospect of assisting our Club and learning about what we do.

I wish to thank the fundraising committee (Helen Kay, Garry Addison, Vicki Rasmussen, Sandy Clarke, Tim McFarlane and Jenni Vilé) for an exciting, productive and enjoyable time.

The Club Newsletter continues, now with fortnightly editions emailed to all members throughout the competition season and monthly editions through the winter months. The newsletter has provided an overview of activities occurring within the Club and allows all members to be informed about areas in which they are not active. In addition to activities, the Newsletter is informing readers of any new member benefits. These are a passive way for all Clubbies to help raise funds for our Club whilst at the same time, receiving discounts at local businesses. We’ve also improved the overall usability of the emailing system for members by moving to Mailchimp.

If you have any Club related items of interest or photos which you’d like to share we encourage you to contact Marketing so we can include them in the Newsletter.

Looking ahead, Marketing will be seeking feedback from our members on how best we can structure our communications to everyone for all the activities, news items and events occurring in our Club. We encourage you to provide us with feedback so we can best steer the future direction of our Club communications.

MEMBERSHIPLyn Brosens | Manager Membership

“It always seems impossible until it is done.” Nelson Mandela

It might seem a stretch to invoke the words of Mandela in the context of the Membership portfolio. There is in fact a direct correlation, when faced with the gargantuan annual task of registering our 1,800 members at the start of each season.

It is the important responsibility of the Membership team to ensure that as a club, we comply with the legislative and administrative requirements of Surf Life Saving Australia. This is no mean feat, considering the myriad of data input by the registration team, which supports the efforts of all of the other portfolios within the club, such as Education, Junior Activity, Competition and Lifesaving. Without accurate records, organisation of patrols, events and training would simply not be possible.

It is testament to the commitment and long hours of work by dedicated volunteers that the registration process happens at all. During July and August, members again availed themselves of the opportunity to re-register over four weeks, with Friday nights and Sunday mornings seeing the administration volunteers busy assisting members with the process.

This was followed by weeks of data input into Surf Life Saving Australia’s Surfguard database, as well as the registration of new members in September, which also ran smoothly. It is important to acknowledge the key contributions of both the willing office and registration volunteers and the managers of relevant portfolios, who supported the Membership team to enrol new members.

LONG SERVICE MEMBERSHIP STATUS

Every year a small group of dedicated club members meets the requirement for long service status, which is ten years of continuous patrolling service. These members can apply for reclassification of their membership status to Long Service. Any members who believe that they fit this category are encouraged to contact the Membership Manager to request reclassification.

SURF CAGE

The well stocked Mullaloo Surf Cage offers our members a range of branded club clothing and equipment which is unrivalled in the State. From bathers, to hoodies, to new jackets, shorts and towels, there is literally something for everyone. The Surf Cage could not run without the stalwart efforts of some key personnel who devote Friday nights and Sunday mornings to serving other members. With a constant rotation of members through the club, we gladly welcome new volunteers to the Cage team. It’s a great way to get to know others and learn more about what makes the club tick. Please contact the Membership Manager if you are interested in helping in the Cage next season.

ANNUAL AWARDS

The Annual Awards night was held on the 9th of May in the beautiful surroundings of the marquee at Joondalup Resort. The fantastic buffet dinner was followed by the Award presentations to nominated members. Master of Ceremonies, Stuart Clarke enlivened the evening with his wit, introducing the guests and conducting the Awards ceremony. Our Annual Awards recognise the major contributions of members in the areas of training, coaching, lifesaving, club representation, administration, surf sports and officiating.

The guests of honour, City of Joondalup Mayor, Troy Pickard and local MLA for Ocean Reef, Albert Jacob were joined by Ian Goodenough, Local Liberal Member for Moore, and Jarod stone from SLSWA who presented Mullaloo SLSA with a cheque from SLS Foundation. Councillors Philippa Taylor and Sam Thomas also assisted with presentation of awards.

MULLALOO SLSC 2014/15 ANNUAL REPORT 4545 MULLALOO SLSC 2014/15 ANNUAL REPORT

The club had a great year, finishing the financial year with a respectable surplus of $52,844 and a healthy cash balance of $479,200.

We have seen continued improvement in performance in both the bar and our gear shop, “The Cage”. We have seen turnover increase in both areas and margins staying consistent. The continued support in these areas is important to help the club on an ongoing basis. With the planned redevelopment of the facilities gaining momentum, we saw some initial costs this year which is the primary driver of the lower profit to last year. All other areas in the club performed well with credit to the management team for managing their budgets closely.

Total income for the year was up $36,442 on last year’s income:

• Marketing sponsorship income was up $17,335 on lastyear.

• Facilities income was up on last year $15,127 with theimproved takings from the bar.

Total Expenses for the year were up $82,278 on last year’s figures:

• Facilities expenses were up on last year, $30,727 primarily due to the redevelopment design costs of $52,000 andincreased stock requirement in the bar. This was offsetby a significant reduction in property costs.

• Membership expenses were up on last year, $28,434 due to higher affiliation fees.

• Juniors expenses were up on last year, $15,819 withthe purchase of additional equipment to support thecontinued development of the juniors.

• Life Saving Services expenses were up on last year,$14,029 with the ongoing investment in this area.

Items worth mentioning:

• The club will be moving to accrual accounting fromnext year and this is further explained below.

• We are seeing continued investment in improvingthe services we provide the members and the widercommunity.

The club remains in a good financial position going forward and the financial stability of the club continues to form a solid foundation for the members. The continued support by the members is important for this club as it continues on the new strategic journey.

MULLALOO SLSC 2014/15 ANNUAL REPORT 53

During the financial year a proposal was put before the Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club (the Club) Board of Directors by the General Managers to change our accounting policy from ‘Cash Accounting’ to ‘Accrual Accounting’. There were a number of factors contributing to the proposal being accepted by the Board.

The single most influencing factor was to comply with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission Act 2012 (the Act). This Act formally established the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) to regulate the operations of charities and not-for-profit entities.

Besides requiring registration with the ACNC to be able to access certain Federal tax concessions, and laying down the registration process, the Act also includes requirements for charities and not-for-profit entities, such as governance standards and external conduct standards, record keeping and reporting, and duties to notify certain matters.

All registered entities are required to give an annual information statement (AIS) to the Commissioner by no later than 31 December in the following financial year. There is a transitional approach being taken to assist

entities in complying with the requirements of the AIS. The Club’s move to accrual accounting forms part of those transitional arrangements.

This will be the last year the Annual Financial Report will be produced using the ‘Cash Accounting’ method. Future years the Annual Financial Report will be produced using the ‘Accrual Accounting’ method. To assist members in making comparisons between the 2014/15 and the 2015/16 financial year an additional Statement of Position (Accrual) has been produced. The amounts in this Statement will become the opening balances for the 2015/16 Financial Year and assist with the 2015/16 Financial Year reporting requirements.

Another factor contributing to the Board’s acceptance of the proposal was the transparency accrual accounting will give members and other stakeholders when analysing the financial health of the Club. This is important as the Club seeks out traditional finance facilities to assist with achieving the Clubs strategic goals. Sponsors are also driving this change as they demand information about the Clubs financials and seek to compare our finances with other not for profit organisations.
