Three cheers for trees!

Wooden garden furniture is

beautiful, natural and stylish

– and at Garden Xtras there’s

a wide range to choose from,

in teak and hardwood. What’s

more – as part of this excellent

company’s green credentials –

Garden Xtras is committed to

support the National Forest by

sponsoring trees.

The National Forest is a

bold project. It’s a forest in

the making, transforming

200 square miles of England’s

heartland, and already more

than 7.8 million trees have been

planted. This means woodland

cover has increased from 6%

to 18%, and habitats are being

created to allow animals, insects

and plants to flourish.

“By planting trees to

replenish the wood supplies

we use, we really know we’re

helping the environment,”

says Stephen at Garden Xtras.

“All our wood is FSC approved

(Forest Stewardship Committee),

which certifies that the timber

has come from legal sustainable

sources – so we’re certainly

doing our bit to preserve the

rain forest! And when you buy

our hardwood garden furniture,

you can be sure you’ll be doing

your bit, too.”

Garden Xtras at Lancing

Business Park stocks a varied

range of garden ornaments

and accessories, too – including,

pots, planters, bird feeders,

trellises and lots more. In fact,

if it doesn’t grow, but you need

it in your garden, pop in for a

browse.

For more details, call

Stephen, Bridget or Maxine on

You give them a final glance as you’re putting everything back in

the shed, knowing in the depths of your soul that all this has been

in vain. It’s a dead cert that as soon as you’ve

closed the front door your gleaming vehicle

will be splattered with random dollops

of seagull poo.

They know. They watch. They wait.

Automatic car wash, anyone?

The first glint of spring sunshine usually

highlights one stark reality – how badly

the car needs a wash. If yours is covered

in less-than-witty-messages scrawled with

a thoughtful person’s finger, it’s time to

unearth all that cleaning equipment you

buried in the shed around last October,

and get cracking. This, of course, is when

you discover the shortcoming of your

hosepipe, which now resembles a dead boa

constrictor. Then, after a fruitless search for all those brushes and

sponges you store up for car-washing, you remember how they

were all relegated to the wheelie bin as being too disgusting to

continue using. You had every intention of replacing them,

of course. But didn’t.

Let’s assume you’ve sorted out the kit and, gritting your teeth,

you get started. It’s drizzling a bit, but what the heck? You notice

the gathering seagulls perching on a nearby roof as, covered in suds

(80% on you, 20% on the car) you battle grimly on.

The drizzle eases and at last you stand back, contemplating your

handiwork in some amazement. The seagulls are looking decidedly

interested now.

In the Mood for a family event at Tangmere

There’s a great day out for the whole family at Tangmere Military Aviation Museum this month – with oodles of special attractions as well as the permanent museum exhibits. With stalls and competitions, a treasure hunt, a fire engine, Southdown bus and police car on display, re-enactors, open cockpits to explore and special visits from several Military Vehicles – there’s plenty to keep everyone occupied. During the afternoon, there’s also a rare opportunity to meet WWII veterans of RAF Bomber Command, as they’re on hand to sign prints, cards and books available in the Museum Shop, in aid of Bomber Command Memorial Fund.

Check out the special book launch of Great War to Great Escape, the story of Bernard ‘Pop’ Green who participated in the real ‘Great Escape’ and later lived in Chichester. The book’s author is Pop’s grandson, who will be there for two signing sessions.

Why not get right “in the mood” and come dressed as a 1940s family? It’s all happening at Tangmere, near Chichester on Sunday May 15 – don’t miss out!

Tangmere Military Aviation Museum is open every day from February to the end of November from 10am. There’s good disabled access, too. Visit the website for admission and event details at www.tangmere-museum.org.uk, or call 01243 790090.

Is it a bird, is it a plane?Wendy Greene talks to Robin Hallett about the joys, rules and responsibilities of kite surfing in Worthing

Robin Hallett was happily

windsurfing in Maui, feeling

great at having achieved a

high level of proficiency, when

something flying above his

head caught his eye. It was a

kite manned by Robbie Naish

the man, in part, responsible

for inventing the sport of kite

surfing and its manufacture.

“I was captivated,” says

Robin, founder member of

Goring Watersports Club.

“I took the first opportunity to

meet the man, learn the basics

and buy the equipment.”

Since then Robin has used

the teaching skills employed

in his day job, running Oak

Grove College Sixth Form, to

develop his own specialised kite

surfing school from Goring’s

Greensward.

As with many new activities,

the law has to catch up with

the invention, and the National

Governing Body for Kite Surfing

(BKSA) was set up to regulate

the sport. Robin soon found,

however, that one-size-fits-all

regulations didn’t necessarily

work in Worthing, so with

continued negotiation with the

BKSA and Worthing Borough

Council has formulated ways to

keep, not just the kite surfers,

but also other Greensward users

safe, happy and having fun.

Robin isn’t just passionate

about his sport. He cares deeply

about the local community and

the training and education of his

students. As Robin points out,

the Greensward is for everyone

and with a little guidance can

continue to be a focus of life-

long leisure for all. Respect,

and Health and Safety are

paramount.

“Legally the limit for teaching

kite surfing is four students to

each teacher with two kites,”

says Robin, “but with the

formation of Goring Watersports

Club, we’ve restricted this to

one kite per instructor at the

Greensward, which the council

welcomes. It doesn’t take long

to become proficient, but unless

you’re taught how, when and

where to launch, there can be

serious implications.”

There are strict rules in

learning to kite surf to ensure

safe progression, and students

can only join the club via the

BKSA, gaining 3rd Party Liability

Insurance right from the start.

Those who are fully trained

need to check before visiting

other parts of the coast as bye-

laws vary. Even along the Sussex

coastline, there are variations

in permitted usage. Use of land

boards, for example, is totally

outlawed in this area, yet

permitted elsewhere.

Robin’s dedication and

enthusiasm makes him the sort

of teacher you wish you’d had

at school. His inclusive outlook

and attention to detail have

ensured that Goring

Watersports Club, as

well as his kite surf

school ‘Kitesurfsussex’

will bring pleasure

to spectators and

participants alike,

while putting

Worthing firmly on the

watersports map.

Win tickets for Blood Brothers at the Pavilion

Twin Liverpool lads separated as babies and brought up in two very different households – are they destined to find each other and make an eternal bond, or is their path simply a road to destruction? It’s a gripping tale and a powerful piece of theatre. It’s Willy Russell’s smash hit musical Blood Brothers, and it’s coming to the Pavilion Theatre in Worthing at the end of this month.

Willy Russell is undeniably one of this country’s leading

contemporary dramatists. His countless credits include Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine, both of which moved from the stage to become award-winning films. Blood Brothers was voted Most Popular British Musical of all Time by New York Times readers.

At the Pavilion there’s a sensational cast headed by X Factor finalist Niki Evans, as the twins’ downtrodden mum Mrs Johnstone. And with songs like A Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True – you’re in for an enthralling and heart-rending evening. Our advice is – bring a big box of tissues!

We’ve got 5 pairs of tickets for opening night of the show, on Monday May 30 at 7.30pm. To enter our prize draw, just answer the following question:

Which Hollywood legend is the title of a famous song from Blood Brothers?

Write your answer on a postcard, together with your contact details and send it to Essentially Worthing Blood Brothers Competition, 7 Phrosso Road, Worthing, BN11 5SJ, to arrive no later than Monday May 16. Only one entry per household, please – and don’t forget to include a daytime phone number.

Blood Brothers runs at the Pavilion Theatre from Monday May 30 – Saturday June 4 at 7.30pm. Matinees: Wednesday and Saturday at 2.30pm

Tickets – £16 – £30.50 depending on performance. Youth groups of ten or more, £11.00. Over 60s £3 discount. (Offers do not apply to Friday or Saturday evenings.)

Award-winning local restaurant Green Cuisine in Worthing’s Rowlands Road are well known for their brilliant events organised to support local and national charities, including WADARS, WCHP and St Matthew’s Church Hall Extension Project. In May their charity of the month is Greek Animal Rescue (GAR), a charity which seeks out stray and abandoned animals abroad and helps to re-home them in Britain. Worthing couple Paul and Titch are actively involved.

“We’ve rescued eight stray dogs from Greece, all of whom suffered terrible abuse in the past,” says Titch. “Our latest

Green Cuisine – doing their bit to help abandoned animals

addition, Oratios, is a stray dog from Athens who was badly scarred in an acid attack. He then spent seven years chained to a tree, so he is now enjoying every moment of his new-found freedom!”

Titch and Paul travel to Greece twice a year, taking supplies to shelters and assisting vets on Spay-athons, where as many stray cats and dogs as possible are sterilised to help control the population. They also bring dogs and cats to new homes in Germany, Holland, Belgium and the UK.

Rustington Manor re-opens at last – under new ownershipFine dining in a country house atmosphere

Here’s the best news we’ve heard in a while. Rustington Manor Hotel, together with Lodwick’s Restaurant and Bar, is now open – and it’s under completely new ownership. Everyone who knows Bob and Ken – that daring duo of top class restaurateurs and hoteliers from Ferring – will be delighted to see their friendly faces at Rustington Manor. There’s a warm welcome for new customers, too.

Rustington Manor is a cosy, family-run hotel, with a real country house atmosphere we know you’ll love. It’s situated in a peaceful spot in Broadmark Lane, just five minutes walk from Rustington village in one direction, and the sea in another. There’s a friendly bar, a relaxing lounge, a superb a la carte restaurant and a pretty, enclosed garden that’s perfect for al fresco drinks or coffee.

Lodwick’s Restaurant boasts a seriously scrumptious a la carte menu in an elegant setting, offering fine dining without the impossible price tag. You could start with Potted Crab – flaked crabmeat and prawns with a lemon tang, topped with butter and served with warm granary toast. Or how about Flame Grilled Red and Yellow Peppers served on goat’s cheese

bruschetta and accompanied with a zesty chilli chutney?

Moving on to main courses, we like the sound of Lodwick’s special Rosemary and Garlic Lamb Shank – slow cooked and served on a bed of creamy potato mash, with a generous smothering of mint, carrot and onion gravy. It’s comfort food of the highest order. If you love veggie dishes, you have

The a la carte menu is available at lunchtime and in the evening – and main course prices range from £8.95 to £16.95, so there’s no need to take out a second mortgage. The special Lunch Menu, served between 12 noon and 2.30pm, offers two courses for £8.95 or three courses for £10.95.

And if you’re a fan of the leisurely Sunday lunch (who isn’t?) you can enjoy roasts with all the trimmings, traditional main courses, starters, salads and desserts – with two courses for £13.95 or three courses for £17.95.

Ladies Who Lunch are well catered for at Rustington Manor with a special monthly club of the same name, which begins at 12 noon on Thursday May 12. Enjoy a three-course lunch for £10.95, followed by guest speaker, author Beryl Kingston who will give a talk on the poet William Blake. Hurry to book your table, as numbers are strictly limited.

And if you’re making a relaxing weekend of it, Rustington Manor has three beautifully furnished double rooms, one twin and one stylish single – all with en suite bath or shower. You’ll love those extra little touches, such as a cosy bathrobe and slippers waiting on your bed when you arrive.

There’s free parking for guests, too.

Per person:

6 or 7 small new potatoes,

scrubbed but not peeled (if

large, cut them in half)

3 garlic cloves, crushed (wet

garlic can also be used)

leaves from a sprig of rosemary

or a few sprigs of thyme or

summer savory, chopped

1 tbsp virgin olive oil

sea salt and freshly ground

black pepper

Place the potatoes in a bowl

with the garlic, herbs and olive

oil. Season well and toss to

coat in the oil and seasonings.

Cut a square of baking

parchment large enough to

hold the potatoes comfortably

and fold it in half to make a

crease. Unfold it and lay the

potatoes on the lower half.

Bring the rest of the paper

over the potatoes and roll it

up lightly along the edges to

form a pouch (a bit like making

a pasty). Make sure that the

package is well sealed. You can

staple it, if you like.

Bake in an oven preheated

to 200°C/Gas Mark 6 for 40

minutes and serve immediately.

The packages will puff up.

Put them on serving plates so

everyone can open theirs at the

table.

Try adding a little saffron to

the potatoes with the oil and

seasonings.

Green Cuisine’s Charity of the Month is Greek Animal Rescue (see our special feature on page 7).

The Greek theme continues with a delicious Greek salad on the menu – and £1 from each dish sold will be donated to GAR. Plans are afoot for a special Greek Night on Saturday June 11, with a tasty Greek Meze, a mini-quiz, raffle, music and a fully licensed bar. Tickets are £15 and all profits go to GAR. We know this is going to be hugely popular, so make sure you contact Green Cuisine and book early.

Green Cuisine are flushed with success after winning Best New Business at the Splash Awards this year. If you’d like more information about the charity events planned at this excellent little restaurant, call 01903 211338.

The Curse of the Short Lease

What’s more, an unexpired term

of less than 70 years makes

the flat unmortgageable with

many mainstream lenders.

Faced with such problems many

leaseholders approach their

freeholders for lease extensions

and, not knowing they can

challenge the terms offered,

agree to the freeholder’s offer.

However, leaseholders

have rights under the 1993

Leasehold Reform, Housing &

Urban Development Act which

gives them the legal right to

a statutory lease extension.

This statutory lease extension

gives leaseholders a 90 year

extension to add on to their

existing unexpired term. It also

includes the extinguishment

of any further ground rent

payments and the right to have

the premium determined by the

Leasehold Valuation Tribunal,

if this cannot be agreed.

Such terms are far better

than those normally offered

by agreement, which typically

include an extension to a new

term of only 99 years, with a

high ground rent that increases

regularly and an inflated

premium. Before agreeing to

the freeholder’s offered terms,

leaseholders are advised to seek

their own independent advice.

Julian Wilkins is an

independent chartered

surveyor who specialises in

the valuation and negotiation

of lease extensions. He is also

the only Surveyor in West

Sussex to be a member of

the Association of Leasehold

Enfranchisement Practitioners.

For an informal no obligation

telephone consultation

regarding your own situation

please call Julian on

01903 872211.

An unexpired lease term of less than 80 years on a residential flat is

considered to be short and can affect saleability, says Julian Wilkins

The ‘Right to Manage’ your own flatsIt’s simpler than you think, says Simon Royall at Oyster Estates

The Commonhold and Leasehold Reform Act 2002 provides the right for leaseholders to force the transfer of the landlord’s management functions to a special company set up by them – the right to manage company.

The process is relatively simple. The landlord’s consent is not required, nor is any order from the court. There is no need for the lease-holders to prove mismanagement by the landlord. The right is available, whether the landlord’s management has been good, bad or indifferent.

The right is exercised by service of a formal notice on the landlord. After a set period of time, the management transfers to the right to manage company (RTM), which has been set up by the leaseholders. Once the right to manage has been acquired,

the landlord is also entitled to membership of the company.

If the takeover of the management is to be successful, there are important issues to consider and a substantial amount of work to be done before service of the notice. You should also be aware of the responsibilities that come with self management, which is not for the inexperienced. It would be wise to appoint an experienced agent to look after the RTM and everyday management issues.

Oyster Estates are able to guide you through the process, report to the directors of the RTM and manage the asset on your behalf. We are a member firm of ARMA (The Association of Residential Managing Agents) and are required to adhere to RICS (Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors) code of practice. We manage blocks between Chichester and Shoreham.

If you’d like to find out more about RTM, call Oyster Estates on 01243 586939 or visit the website at www.oysterestates.co.uk

Painful Corns?Tough Toenails?Simply can’t reach?Full Foot Care Home Visits

Does your website have Killer Content? In my experience, writing website content is something

business owners dread, and is often not given the time it

deserves, says Claire Love at LWS Creative

Your website is often the first place people look to find out about you and your product or service. Unless the copy is engaging, interesting, current and well written, you can bet some of your visitors will decide not to investigate further – and you’ll lose some or all of those potential clients. The trick is to use compelling, fluent content, ensuring at the same time that what you write gives you the best chance of your site appearing in the search results. It’s no easy task, so here are some pointers:

Make your titles catchy – include some grabbers, like “top tips” or “top 10s”

Make your content unique and ensure spelling and grammar are correct

Ask yourself questions – then answer them. You can bet your reader wants the answers, too

Lead people to the next stage – send them where you want them to go with internal links

Don’t forget to promote your site and your content. Get on blogs, forums and more—and ensure people read what you have to say

Do some research! Find out what’s popular, and write about it.

Creating killer content is certainly an art. If it’s not for you, or you simply don’t have time, it’s wise to invest in an expert. Give us a call on 01903 790100 or email [email protected].

Need any lifting and shifting?I can help you with a complete spring clear out,

says Garfy at Star Solutions

If the thought of climbing

the loft ladder fills you with

dread, or your car has been

banished to the driveway

because you just can’t fit it

into the garage – you

could be in need of a

major clear out session.

Garages, sheds and loft

areas are notorious

for accumulating

mountains of stuff you

don’t need, and for

most of us, it’s a matter of

“out of sight, out of mind.”

But now spring is well and

truly here, you can’t put it off

any longer. Let me help you

get to grips with it all. At Star

Solutions we offer a complete

clearance service, from single

items to the full works –

disposing of your unwanted

clutter simply, efficiently and

safely.

Need a bed moved upstairs

or heavy furniture shifted

within a room? I do all the

work, so you don’t have to lift

a finger. What’s more, I’m a

licensed waste carrier, so you

can be sure everything will be

properly disposed of, in line

with environmental waste

regulations.

And if you call me out for a

job this month and right

through until the end

of August, I’ve pledged

to give 10% of the cost

to St Barnabas Hospice –

so we’ll both be helping

a really worthwhile

local charity.

Garfy is an ex-police

officer and ambulance driver.

He’s completely reliable and prides himself on a friendly, personal approach to the whole business of lifting and shifting. Call Star Solutions on 07748 023923 or email [email protected] for advice and a free estimate.

We provide...subsidised veterinary treatment to pets of local

people receiving certain means-tested benefits or

bona-fide homeless, including many pensioners.

Although receiving fees, we rely heavily on donations

and legacies to cover our costs. Further subsidies

are available towards micro-chipping, neutering and

vaccinating puppies and kittens, and towards major

treatments or referrals beyond owners’ means. We

A-tishoo! Are you under attack from pollen? Here’s how to minimise the misery

All allergies are the result of an

immune system over-reacting to

normally harmless substances,

such as pollen or house dust—

and they’re no joke. If you’re

unlucky enough to suffer from

hay fever, you’re not alone.

There are 12 million people in

Britain with exactly the same,

pollen-triggered symptoms –

sneezing, coughing, wheezing,

tightness in the chest,

difficulty in breathing

and red, itchy eyes.

Fortunately, there’s

quite a lot you can do

to minimise the misery.

Treat your symptoms.

Over the counter

anti-histamines,

available from your

local pharmacist, work

wonders on runny

noses and itchy eyes.

Take advice about these

if you’re pregnant,

however.

Use your car’s air-conditioning.

Okay, it’s not the same as

letting the wind waft through

your hair, but it will protect you

from all those pollen clouds as

you drive along.

Consider an air filter. Keeping

the air clean in your house can

bring relief from pollen and

other irritants like pet dander.

HEPA (high-energy particulate

arresting ) filters are the most

efficient. When the air filter is

in use, remember to keep the

door closed, so the machine

won’t be overburdened.

Kicking off for the summerNick Osborne’s a serious fan of the beautiful game

If you’ve ever listened to me

on the radio it will come as

no surprise that I am a big

football fan. In fact, if you

listen often enough you’ll

probably know that I’m avid

supporter of Brighton & Hove

Albion. And if you have more

than a passing interest in the

beautiful game, you will know

that I am a very happy boy right

now! The reason, of course, is

that my beloved Seagulls have

been promoted to the NPower

Championship next season in

the same summer as we move

into our magnificent new 22,500

all-seater stadium at Falmer.

For non-football fans this

means we are now just one

league away from the Premier

League and teams like Chelsea

and Manchester United. As

perfect timings go, this really

couldn’t have worked out

any better for the fans and

the club. The season ticket

sales for the new American

Express Community stadium

are through the roof (which

is ironic, as at the AMEX we

will now actually have a roof!)

I’m also delighted to have

secured my seat in the West

Stand Upper tier, which I’m

sure will be worth every penny.

At this point I feel it is worth

noting that there will be bar

facilities with a wide variety

of beverages available within

the ground. So if you are in

the same stand as me, mine’s

a lager!

When it came to writing

this column I had only one

thought in my head, such is

the excitement surrounding

the future of the Albion.

I know I’m not alone.

Whenever I get the train

from Worthing station to

the Withdean to watch the

matches, the platforms

are always full of blue

and white shirts – and

some very happy faces,

to boot! Just think,

next season we will all

be getting the train to

Falmer rather than to

Preston Park!

So in a nutshell, this is one

very exciting Summer – and not

just because of football related

euphoria.

Where the heart isWraysbury’s a home in the true sense

When someone reaches a stage of their life when they need to live in a secure, protected environment, they want to be sure they can still remain as active as possible. At Wraysbury, the brand new EMI home in Beccles Road, there are ample opportunities to stimulate the mind and exercise the body to full potential.

The building, which has been completely refurbished, is laid out so that each en suite room

is the resident’s private domain while remaining part of the community. Assisted baths are also available on each floor. There are three newly available, beautifully appointed south facing bed-sitting rooms, an elegant lounge, a library and smart dining room to give a real country house hotel feel. The large conservatory running behind these rooms can be used all year round, with views of the garden which is accessed

by gently sloping ramps. It is currently laid to lawn and rose beds but will soon have raised beds added. Meanwhile the leafy surround gives a pleasant, calm outlook from inside the conservatory.

Says Alice Bock, “I want the residents to feel relaxed and completely at home. Our ethos is to allow each individual to live life according to their own choices – not those prescribed by others. Having a secure site, we don’t need to lock doors or over-medicate unnecessarily.”

Wraysbury House was originally bequeathed to Worthing Society for the Blind, who ran it as a home for many years before selling it to raise funds for their new needs. Alice has taken this lovely old house and re-modelled it to the standard and style she requires. She is very happy to give a guided tour to anyone interested in securing a place.

“There’s plenty of entertainment and activities – as well as a hairdressing salon and aromatherapy sessions,” says Alice.

Respite care is also available, giving carers a chance for a well-earned break. It’s also a good way to find out if it’s the way forward for an elderly infirm relative who is struggling at home.

You’ll find Wraysbury at 2 Beccles Road (near the Heene Road end of Richmond Road). For more information, or to book an appointment, call 01903 233539, e-mail [email protected] or visit www.wraysburyhouse.co.uk
