    Essence of Gita

    by Swami Ramsukhdasji

    - Chapter 1 -

Due only to worldly attachments man is

trapped in the dilemma - What should I do

and what should I not do? and becomes unable

to do his duty. Therefore one should not come

under the sway of delusion and desire for

    happiness.

    - Chapter 2 -

This body is destructible, and the knower ofthis body is indestructible (avinashi) giving

importance to this discrimination (vivek) and

fulfilling our duties on imbibing and rendering

useful any one of these two solutions,

worries (chintaa) and sorrows (shauk) will end.

    - Chapter 3 -

By simply doing ones duties promptly, primarily

for the well-being of others, without beingattached to the fruits of these actions, one

    can attain salvation.

    - Chapter 4 -

There are two ways for being released from

the bondage of our actions (karmabandhan)

    - 1) Realizing the essential nature of

activity (karma), and doing duties in a selfless

    manner (niswaarth bhaava) or

    - 2) Realization of the Supreme

    knowledge (tattva jnana).

    - Chapter 5 -

    Faced with favorable and unfavorable

circumstances, one should not become happy or

sad. A man that becomes happy or sad fromchanging situations is unable to rise above

worldly matters and can never experience

    eternal joy (param anand).

    - Chapter 6 -

    With any spiritual practice, equanimity

(samtaah) should come. Without equanimity, ahuman being cannot entirely become free of

mental agitations (nirvikaar) and attain peace.

    - Chapter 7 -

Everything is God accepting this is the best

    of all spiritual practices.

    - Chapter 8 -

Depending on the last thoughts, this embodied

Soul attains its end. Therefore man should at

all times be engaged in remembrance (smaran)

of God, and at the same time fulfill his duties

in life. Doing so, even at the end, man will

    remain in remembrance of God.

    - Chapter 9 -

All men have the right to attain GodRealization, whatever their caste, stage in life,

organization (sect), country, race, color etc.

Consciousness (Paramatma tattva) that isworth knowing. On knowing this Ultimate

    Consciousness, one can realize immortality.

To be released from the bondage of this

world, it is essential to rise above the threemodes of nature Sattwa (goodness), Rajas

man can get beyond these three modes of

    nature, this material existence, through

    single-minded exclusive devotion.- Chapter 15 -

In this world the main benefactor, the

praiseworthy Personality and Ultimate One is

only God. Believing this implicitly and whole-

It is only through evil propensities and ill

conduct that a human being gets caught, hurled in the cycle of birth and death and

    propensities and unrighteousness.

    - Chapter 17 -Whatever auspicious work performed with

deep faith and conviction, man must commence

it first by remembering God and reciting His

the essence of the Vedas is Upanishads, and

the essence of the Upanishads is the Gita, and

the essence of the Gita is sharanagati" (taking
