Fitzwilliam College Land Economy Essay Competition 2010
This essay competition is for Lower Sixth Formers with no restriction as to subjects studied. The word
limit is 2500 words. Applicants will be required to enter their details on line. Full details of how to
enter and how to submit essays will be available on our website soon
http://www.fitz.cam.ac.uk/admissions/essay-competitions
Entries should be submitted no later than 4th
March 2011. Teachers are asked to certify on a covering
form that the essay is the student's own work and not part of any coursework submitted as part of an
examination. The prize fund is £300 with a first prize of £200. Certificates of merit may be awarded to
runners-up who have sufficiently impressed the judges. The College reserves the right not to award
prizes if there is no entry of sufficient merit. We regret that it will not be possible for us to provide
individual feedback. The judges' general response to the field of entries will, however, be posted on
the Fitzwilliam College Land Economy webpage. Prizes and certificates will be awarded at the
Fitzwilliam College Open Day on Saturday 7 May 2011.
The essay titles are:
1) "The Barclays Bike Scheme is nothing more than marketing, Boris". Discuss that statement
2) Where do you feel safe, and why?
3) Kenyan Green Beans, £5.16 per kg in a UK store. So what?
4) War. What is it good for?
Answers need not restrict their scope to any particular country, and inclusion of global issues will be
welcomed where it is relevant.
Entrants are reminded of the need for citation of sources and secondary literature, and for the
provision of a list of references at the end of the essay.
