    W h o ujas the g r e a t e s t p l a y e r ever? S e v e r a l p l a y e r s are c a n d i d a t e s , like M o r p h y ,

    S t e i n i t z , L a s k e r , C a p a b l a n c a , A l e k h i n e , B o t u i n n i k , F i s c h e r and K a r p o u . Each w a s

    the b e s t in the w o r l d at some t i m e . A n d e a c h had some fatal flaw w h i c h p r e v e n t e d

    p e r f e c t i o n .

    M o r p h y had a very short c a r e e r in w h i c h he m a i n l y d e m o l i s h e d A n d e r s s e n and was

    a v o i d e d by S t a u n t o n , two of the a l l - t i m e g r e a t s . We c a n ' t really till if he w a s

    a s g o o d a s t h e o t h e r s b e c a u s e o f l a c k o f d a t a .

    S t e i n i t z won m a n y m a t c h e s a n d t o u r n a m e n t s and lyas W o r l d C h a m p . But he lost a lot of

    c h e s s g a m e s .

    L a s k e r w a s c o n s i d e r e d lucky at the t i m e . He was the p e r f e c t p s y c h o l o g i c a l p l a y e r ,

    o f t e n f i t t i n g h i s game to h i s o p p o n e n t s ' s t y l e s . He h e l d the W o r l d C h a m p i o n s h i p

    for 27 y e a r s . But m o s t p e o p l e c o n s i d e r iviorphy and C a p a b l a n c a to have bean b e t t e r

    c h e s s p l a y e r s .

    C a p a b l a n c a w a s the p e r f e c t c h e s s p l a y i n g m a c h i n e who a l m o s t n e v e r lost a g a m e . He

    l o s t 35 g a m e s in his l i f e . He w a s c o n s i d e r e d u n b e a t a b l e until he w a s soundly

    t r o u n c e d by A l a k h i n e for the W o r l d C h a m p i o n s h i p . He p l a y e d for d r a w s , s e e m i n g l y
