• ACS Has New Tables- Fertility

- Health Insurance Coverage

• ACS Tables are Different- Age by Income Change

- 2000 - Reported for 7 age intervals (10-year age groups)

- ACS - Reported for 4 age intervals (20-year age groups)

• What does this mean to the data user?- Product offerings will change

- Some variables will not be comparable to Census 2000

7. Frequency of the ACS Survey

Page 12: Esri - 2010 Census and ACS

Frequency of the ACS Survey

• ACS is a continuous survey.- Survey is conducted monthly. - Data is released annually.

• Census 2000 SF3 data was released once.

• What does this mean to the data user?- More frequent updates of data will be available.

ACS Single-Year and Multi-Year Estimates

• Census 2000 and 2010 represent point estimates.- One single date

• ACS Data represents period estimates (averages).- Period of time

• What does this mean to the data user?- ACS data is not comparable to Census 2000 data

- Different variable definitions, data collection methods and reporting

- Monthly surveys require different reference periods

Data Product Population Threshold

1-year estimates 65,000+

3-year estimates 20,000+

5-year estimates All areas

5. ACS Sample Size

Page 17: Esri - 2010 Census and ACS

• Census 2000 SF3 represents 1 in 6 households.

• ACS represents 1 in 40 households.

• What does this mean to the data user?- Smaller sample sizes impact small area estimates.

- Will need to incorporate estimates of sampling error.

ACS Margin of Error

• What does this mean for the data user?

- It is necessary to incorporate the MOE when using ACS data.

- All data orders and reports with ACS data will show all the estimate, the estimate MOE, and the percent.- This will increase file sizes and change

report display.

Benefits and Things to Consider

Benefits -• ACS provides access to more frequent data releases• ACS means annual updates of variables not

previously available from Esri

Things to Consider - • Geography Differences• Accuracy of small area data questionable• Comparability issues• Use of totals is not recommended
