LEAGUE SEASON STRUCTURE
The charts below detail the number of slots available per division, number of match days and finally number of games per match day.
SEASON 8 AGE AND DIVISION
“PRELIMINARY” SCHEDULING
As we always receive requests for scheduling (what time will games be at what venue etc) we have produced the schematic below.
The schematic below assumes ALL Leagues are filled with 8 teams Should ANY league be filled with less than 8 teams or indeed should a particular division
have no teams, or a new division needs to be created, the schematic WILL BE revised. The revision could mean totally different pitch for a given division or even that division
switching from Group 1 to 2 or vice versa. As such please treat the below as “indicative” and not “definitive”
The above schematic is subject to change based on the final number of teams joining and in which age groups.

WHY Small Sided Games at
U7, U9 & U11
The introduction of small-sided games for young soccer players is based on educational research on the way children learn
Just as with their academic education their soccer education is progressive. Empirical studies have been conducted into the improvement in the game environment for children in small-sided games as opposed to the 11v11 adult version of the game
Mathematically, levels (or lines) of interaction are the possible passing connections between players. Each time another player enters the field of play the level of complexity of the game increases
The interactions are complex tactical possibilities
This will have an impact on player development. The impact varying according to the age and ability of the player
Pre-teen children find it difficult to understand complex patterns of play and the more players that are added to a game, the more difficult the learning experience becomes
Ultimately, this could suppress the child’s ability to fully develop their technical and tactical abilities
ESPZEN Junior Super League “It just makes sense”
USA Soccer Federation has provided 7 excellent reasons they have moved to Small Sided Games:-
1. Because we want our young soccer players to touch the soccer ball more often and become more skillful with it! (Individual technical development)
2. Because we want our young soccer players to make more, less-complicated decisions during the game! (Tactical development)
3. Because we want our young soccer players to be more physically efficient in the field space they are playing in! (Reduced field size)
4. Because we want our young soccer players to have more individual teaching time with the coach! Less players on the field and less players on the team will guarantee this! (Need to feel worthy and need to feel important)
5. Because we want our young soccer players to have more, involved playing time in the game! (More opportunity to solve problems that only the game presents)
6. Because we want our young soccer players to have more opportunity to play on both sides of the ball! (More exposure to attacking and defending situations)
7. Because we want our young soccer players to have more opportunities to score goals! (Pure excitement)
These are the reasons why we adults must foster "Small-Sided Games" in our youth soccer programs. The "Small-Sided" environment is a developmentally appropriate environment for our young soccer players. It's a FUN environment that focuses on the young soccer player.
It just makes sense doesn't it?
WHY ESPZEN Junior Super League
WHY IS 5, 6 & 7 ASIDE FOOTBALL BETTER THAN LARGE SIDED GAMES ?
To all qualified coaches the benefits of small sided games are well understood, it is widely known and proven with empirical research that in 5v5 (Under 6,7 and Under 8), and 7v7 (Under 10 /11/ 12/13) compared to large sided games, there will be:- Far more repeated touches of the ball by all players More touches throughout all areas of the pitch More passes attempted are in a forward direction in the Small Sided Game. More attacking 1 v1s, final third and penalty area entries More shots on goal and technical skills by goalkeepers Repeated decision making experience The ball is in play far more in the in the Small Sided Game Repeated experience of basic tactical situations More active participation is directly related to fun and enjoyment More experience in all phases of the game. There is no hiding or dominant player hogging the ball.
Every child has to participate in all facets of the game, attack and defend. The emphasis is on PLAYER DEVELOPMENT.
More active participation leads to an optimal fitness load Better success rate leads to better quality of play and player retention Better success rate leads to better self esteem and self confidence More individual responsibility – every player must attack and defend The game is easier to understand Freedom of expression – no positions in early stages Less perceived stress on the player when playing the small-sided game Less negative comments on the small-sided game 80% of children believe that they touched the ball more often in the small sided game There was less perceived pressure from parents in the small-sided game
WHY ESPZEN J-LEAGUE U6 to U11
Concept Other Leagues ESPZEN Junior League Team Size 8 or 9 a side
Currently no football association in the world promotes 8 or 9 a side formats for U9 aged players
Five, Six aside and Seven aside Plenty of touches of the ball for each player. All over the world, federations are moving to 5 aside for Under 8s and 7 aside for Under 10s
Squad Player names have to be determined in advance and fixed for the season
Squads not fixed, allowing clubs or soccer schools maximum flexibility to pick and choose which players are available each week
Season Squad Size Usually 12-15 players Large squads required to account for injuries or players travelling. However, this model causes a selection headache when all players are available
At the discretion of the club or soccer school Each week, the coach can select whichever players are available, according to the clubs internal policy
Match Day Squad Size Usually 12-15 players Very difficult for a coach to keep 12 players (and parents) happy on match day. With full rotation at best this means each player receives only 50% playing time. Watching for the remaining 50%
Each Club to Determine Number of players a club can bring is not dictated to them. Every club has their own internal policy, each club will have two games on match day and should ensure sufficient players on match day to fulfil fixture obligation.
Venue Can be Random Depends on the organiser
Fixed Venues for the season State of the art astro turf field, centrally located, within easy reach of each other
Goal-Keeper Punting the ball Allowed and often encouraged Deemed by some parents and coaches as a winning strategy and Goalkeepers receiving praise for the distance the ball is kicked
Not Allowed Rules customised to promote the ball being played on the ground rather than long kicks over players. Player development is the focus in these customizations
Playing Time Per Team Total of 40 minutes per match day Total of 70 minutes football per match day (u8 and u10) and 50 mins for U6
Fixtures Arranged week to week Determined only week by week thus not allowing academies to plan effectively
Planned in Advance To allow teams to plan and work with parents to ensure player availability
Kick Off Times Can be random Depends on the organiser
Same time for each age groups each match day enabling clubs to plan their coaching resources, and makes parent logistics simple.

If you organise girls teams and would like to join a girls only league let us know.

SPONSORSHIP
FourFourTwo (www.FourFourTwo.com.sg) are the title sponsor of the ESPZEN J League.
FourFourTwo will run regularly articles on their website and facebook site regarding the junior leagues and the teams within.
“The changing face of youth football”
"As professional youth coaches we were very surprised that Under-8 youngsters in Singapore are asked to play 8-a-side, this is akin to sending children to university before they have been to school," says William Patz, former Aston Villa, WBA and Manchester United coach and current ESPZEN Soccer School Program Director.
"Having witnessed changes that have taken place in youth football within Europe with regards to competition format, I am thrilled ESPZEN’s mission to get Singapore’s young footballers playing age appropriate competitions with correct sized balls, pitches, goals and formats is gathering pace."

FourFourTwo (www.FourFourTwo.com.sg) are the title sponsor of the ESPZEN J League.
“Football learning that's on par with Europe's best
“The 5-a-side allows the Under-9 boys to have lots of touches on the ball,” explains Triple T Soccer Academy coach Michael Adam. “The pitch for the competition has adequate space, enough to play tactically with passing and movement.
With the heavy emphasis on developing individual skills in addition to teamwork in the FourFourTwo ESPZEN Junior League, youngsters are constantly encouraged to use their initiative, molding their character and responsibility.
“The kids enjoy every match and are always looking forward to competitive match days,” says Faizal Sa’audi of Chelsea Soccer School Singapore, advocating the healthy competition.
