1. La “a personal”• Most sentences in Spanish and English

have a subject, a verb, and a direct object.

• Carol eats beans.• José tiene un coche.• Mike sells candy.• Anita compra comida.

• In Spanish, when the object of a sentence is a person, the word “a” must appear in front of the person.

• María llama a su novia.• Mis padres buscan a su hijo.• Jorge mira a la camarera.

La “a personal”

• Remember, a + el = al• Lupe ve al director.• The “a” is not used after the verb tener• Tengo 6 hijos.• Tenemos a una maestro.• The “a” only goes in front when the person

is an object, not a subject.• Mamá ayuda a mi hermano.• A mi tío fuma mucho.

• The word quién counts as a person• The “a” doesn’t translate as any word in English;

it just has to be in the Spanish sentence.

2. The hace…que formula• A specific formula is used to say what you

started doing in the past and you are still doing now.

• How long have you been listening?• I have been reading for an hour.• Jon has been sleeping for 20 minutes.

• I’ve been smoking for 20 years.• You cannot translate this sentence word for word

into Spanish.

• Yo fumo para 20 años• You must say, “it makes 20 years that I smoke”

• Hace 20 años que fumo

• How long have you been reading?• “¿Cómo largo tú lees?” would make no sense in

Spanish.• You must ask, “How much time does it make that you read?”

• ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que lees?”

the hace…que formula• ¿Cuántos años hace que vives en Hammond?• How many years does it make that you live in Hammond?

• Hace 10 años que vivo aquí.• It makes 10 years that I live here.• ¿Cuántas horas hace que plancha Juan?• How many hours has Jon been ironing?• Hace una hora que plancha• It makes an hour that he irons

Hace…que• Names never appear before the hace because you

are saying “it makes…”

• Juan hace dos minutos…• Names appear after the que• Hace dos minutos que Juan fuma

• Hace dos años = for 2 years

3. ser vs. estar• Both verbs mean “to be”• The complete charts are:

• Somos = “We are”; Estamos = “We are”• Eres = you are; estás = you are

• Ser is used for different reasons than estar.• Estar is used for:1. telling where someone/thing is located.

• Notice how the meanings change by choosing ser or estar:
