To tell someone you address as tú to do something, we use an Informal Affirmative Command.

Let’s break down this long name for a grammar topic…

“Informal” – you would address them with the

informal tú

“Affirmative” – you want this person to do the

action

“Command” – the form that the verb takes in

Spanish when you tell someone to do something

To form an Informal Affirmative Command…

1. Conjugate for “tú” in the present tense

2. Drop the “-s”

The exclamation points are for emphasis. You don’t always need them

Hablar – to talk

Hablas – you talk

¡Habla! – talk!

Important: This means that if your verb is a stem-changer, it will keep its stem change in the command form.Pedir (e -> i)

Irregular Informal Affirmative Commands

Of course there are a few Informal Affirmative Commands that do not follow the normal steps to form commands. They are:

Poner – Pon!

Venir – Ven!

Tener – Ten!

Ir – Ve!

Ser – Sé!

Salir – Sal!

Hacer – Haz!

Decir – Di!(Say!)
