The X Factor winner’s debut album Letters hasgone platinum with over 300,000 sales. It’sclearly been heard by many, but for those thataren’t familiar with it; the singer describes it as– “Something for everyone. I know that’s sucha cliché answer but I really think that. Wedidn’t write songs to appeal to everyone but itjust turns out that after picking the best ones, there was a real mix. There’s a real soulfulsound to some tracks, others are very rocky, and some have been stripped right back – justme with my guitar.”

I caught up with Matt at the launch of radiostation Heart Cambridgeshire where heperformed the single Amazing which hedescribes as – “just a great love song” – infront of an intimate crowd including breakfastshow presenter Kev Lawrence and presenterToby Anstis.

Matt’s a great solo artist but I was interestedto see if has any collaborations in his sightsyet. “I really want to cement myself first beforeworking with other artists,” he revealed. “I’dlike to prove myself so that singers want towork with me too.” After giving it morethought, Matt confessed – “Chris Martin fromColdplay is my hero. If I had to give a name ofone person I’d like to work with it would beChris. I love his song writing skills and love theband.”

Although it’s not been long since the release ofMatt’s album, it looks like a second isn’t farbehind. “I’ve been writing songs way beforethe X Factor so there’s a lot of material lyingabout. My manager heard one song recentlythat’s been hiding away on my emails and wasgutted that he hadn’t heard it before wereleased the album. I don’t know how I’d feel

about releasing the songs I wrote before the X Factor. I was at a different place in my lifeback then. Saying that, I know a lot of thehardcore fans have managed to get hold of myoriginal material.”

As a chilled out performer, I wondered howMatt felt about more outrageous acts like LadyGaga. I was quite surprised to find him prettyenthusiastic –“I think she’s brilliant! I think herpromoters are brilliant as well. When it cameout that she may have man parts, it wasridiculous but people still looked. Everyonewas talking about it. And it’s been one thing oranother with her since.” Matt joked – “I mayhave to try out a similar publicity stunt!”

So what’s life been like since winning the X Factor? “Things are really good. This is mylife dream. I picked up a guitar when I was justfive and ever since, I’ve wanted to write analbum. I still can’t believe that’s happened…and that the album reached No.2 in thecharts.”Matt continued – “I don’t feel like I’vemade it quite yet though. I want to keepgetting better and I’m going to make sure I putin the hard work so that happens.”

And how did Matt end up on the show thatmade him a nationwide celebrity? Heexplained – “My ex-girlfriend’s mate filmedme singing at my local pub and decided toupload it to the X Factor website. I spent hourstrying to stop her but she wasn’t having any ofit. Even after the X Factor got in touch I didn’twant to go. A friend kindly explained to methat if I didn’t take the opportunity, he would

beat me up. And the rest is history.”

Not being one to turn down an opportunitymyself, Matt is now aware that he’s more thanwelcome to perform at my wedding this June.He has my business card and will be (cough, cough)… getting in touch.

And what’s Matt up to now? You may haverecently seen the reality TV star proudlywearing an official Sport Relief T-shirt(available at sportsdirect.com stores andonline). I’ve no doubt that he wears it withpride as Matt has seen for himself how themoney raised really can make the world ofdifference to people’s lives, both here in the UKand overseas.

On a recent trip to Southampton and Tanzania,Matt met people whose lives have beentransformed thanks to money raised throughSport Relief.

So not only is Matt a pleasure to talk to, he’sdown-to-earth, does a lot for charity, and in thewords of our Face of ESP (Jess Lockhart) he’seven better looking in person. It’s just not fairfellas!

Some of Peterborough’s most vulnerablechildren will be getting the support theyneed thanks to the generosity of localbusiness people who raised more than£10,000 with the help of popular sportspresenter Jake Humphrey.TV’s Formula One frontman for the Beeb – who was born in ourcity – came home to host a special fundraiser by the NSPCCPeterborough Business Support Group at the Holiday Inn lastmonth.

It was a great night and top marks to organiser Carol Bunning forbringing one of the friendliest and most genuine TV personalitiesI’ve interviewed to the city.

No event would be complete without the responsibility ofcompering and auctioneering going to Heart’s Kev Lawrence. Hemay be sporting a Damon Hill-like goatee these days but nobodycan deny what a fine job Kev did in encouraging people to gowild with their cash at the auction.

And because it was all for a good cause prizes like a cut andstyle at Nicky Clark’s hair salon in London went for £500! Onebidder even secured a day for four at the Red Bull Racing factoryin Milton Keynes for an impressive £3,100.

Jake’s own auction donation was a Monaco 2010 framed VIPpass worn by him and signed by race winner Mark Webber, which was bought for £900.

A former pupil at Queen’s Drive Infant School, Jake retains fondmemories of the seven years he spent living in Peterborough. Hisfamily home was near the Norfolk pub, he distinctly rememberssummer weekends at Ferry Meadows and just as I did when Iwas a boy, sitting on the sloping walls of the fountains inQueensgate.

His first memory of football matches was going to Posh with hisdad but with the onset of adulthood Jake defected to the darkside and is now a passionate Norwich City supporter (althoughhe insists Posh is his second team).

GOOD LUCK ‘HITMAN HUGHES’ AND THE BOYSBest of luck to former Face of ESP Lauren Hughes and the rest of the ESF Sports stable with special mentions to mycompatriots Petch, Doms, Mickey, Paolo and George who’ll be lacing up their boxing gloves in aid of Sue Ryder at theHoliday Inn on Saturday March 3 for a night of white collar boxing. See you there!

So how did a teenager who failed his first attempt at A-levelsand was fired from McDonald’s for ‘having no communicationskills’ become one of the most enviable TV presenters on thegogglebox?

I caught up with Jake in the pit lane before the lights turnedgreen for race start…

Needless to say you’re in a great job but how did youget into it?

“I realise I’m in a fortunate position doing a job a lot of peoplewould like to do and I’m proud and honoured to be doing it. MyTV career kind of unfolded in front of me, I found something Iwas good at and loved. But it all started when I was a runneron Rapture TV. I got a break presenting a show in place of aguy who called in sick and that led to presenting children’s TVbut it was sport I really wanted to work on and I just keptchasing my goal until one day the BBC put their faith in me!”

You travel the world covering F1 but surely it’s beennice to come home for this event?

“Yes it has. It made me smile driving into the city for this eventand going past Peterborough District Hospital where I wasborn and seeing it all shut down! But in all seriousness it’sreally nice to come back home and little things bring backgreat memories. The NSPCC here in Peterborough are doingsome incredible work and I was keen to support them.Something like £500,000 has been raised since 2006 and it’sall been spent locally.”

What’s the best thing about your job?

“The best thing is also the worst thing due to the fact it’s sodraining and exhausting working from country to country andadjusting to different climates and time zones. I’m also dealingwith two pundits (Eddie Jordan and David Coulthard) whoaren’t particularly disciplined when it comes to live television! That doesn’t help when you’re on air for hours on end withoutan autocue but I guess that’s what makes it all fantastic too.”

And what have you been doing since the end of lastseason’s F1 championship?

“I’ve been preparing to present track cycling during theOlympics. Plus, attending loads of meetings to ensure BBCviewers continue to get the best out of watching F1 followingchanges to the sport’s rights that Sky now play a part in.We’ve been working hard to keep it compelling andimpressive. The BBC is also focused on getting the best out ofthe Euros this summer. I’ll be working on that football coverageand later in 2012 the Sports Personality of the Year.”

So is this season going to be another master class byVettel and Red Bull in winning the championship?

“Seb and the car are peaking at the same time. Lastseason he was a much better driver than the year previousand he absolutely blew Mark Webber out of the water. That’s a measure of how good he is because Mark is afantastic driver too. But the car is king and the car is morethan half of the battle. A great driver in a poor car stillwon’t win a race and at the moment Red Bull areamazing.”

Can former world champion Kimi Raikkonen seriouslychallenge on his return to the sport in a Lotus Renault?

“Lotus will go into the season a week behind everyoneelse in terms of testing due to a chassis issue they’ve hadbut the return of Kimi is great for the team and for F1. Kimiwill definitely be one to watch but don’t write off MarkWebber. I saw Mark recently and he’s driven, relaxed andfitter than ever. It’s the first time a quarter of the grid areworld champions. There are six of them out there gunningfor repeat glory but I still wouldn’t bet against Vettel doingit for the third time.”

And finally, was Ayrton Senna the greatest?

“Without doubt. I would have loved to have seen him racein my time presenting. Right from the beginning he hadthe edge – he was incredible. At the start of his F1 careerhe took an uncompetitive car in a Toleman almost to a winat Monaco and that kind of feat doesn’t happen anymore. He was at the back of the grid in the rain, the car wasmoving around even in a straight line and despite this hecontinued to push the car to its limits. He ended up almostbeating Alain Prost in what was a truly remarkableperformance. He was simply the most competitive anddramatic driver of his era.”

MotherIt’s Mother’s Day this month so it’d be rude of me not to compile a list ofwords that remind me of my mamma: Drama, pasta e fasul, anxiety, tradition, smile, work, grey roots, honest, blood pressure, fried peppersand sausage, duty, garden, respect, fried macs, genuine, blatant, opening my letters and unconditional love.

MY WORDOF THEMONTH

HOWARD’S CLAIM FORLOSS OF EARNINGS?Fabio Capello walked away from the worst job in Britain with a bundle of cash but spare athought for what his resignation means for local lookalike Howard Brown (pictured above).Howard, I have Capello’s home address if you want to claim a loss of earnings…

BRILLIANT BEEMERSAYS ADIOS!It was supposed to be my turn. I’d been waiting a month but then the heartbreaking callfrom TJ came in… “Pep, I have some bad news. James is taking the S1000RR to a highspeed circuit in Spain so I’m afraid you’ll have to wait until April to throw your leg over her now.”

I was devastated. The hottest thing on two wheels stood me up for a boring ride along the Costa Brava and a trip to sunny Seville. My promise of a romantic blast on some damp B-roads and maybe a ride out to Sawtry obviously didn’t push her beautifully made switchgear.

Bidding her farewell, I couldn’t hold myself back – I lost control momentarily when thisphoto was taken – I just had to have her. I apologise to my sponsors Balderston for thesudden outburst of uncontrollable lust. April will soon be here. In the meantime, in thewords of Celine Dion… “My love will go on…”

CAUGHT IN THE ACT!"Just my luck. I couldn't decide on two strikers with Rooneysuspended but I come across a great pair as soon as I resign!"

This one includesmy old Edinburgh Festival flat mate comedian Patrick Monahan(see www.espmag.co.uk for my interview with Patrick).

And it wouldn't be Sport Reliefwithout David Walliams taking ona swimming challenge. His 140

Anyway, good luck to everyone taking part in miles for Sport Relief.

Robin Cousins, Dancing On Ice judge and creator of the Tropicana ice showtook time out to have photos taken with some of the children and familieswho are being supported through their treatment and rehabilitation by thecharity.

Carole Hughes from Anna’s Hope told us – “Robin is now a friend and a lifelong supporter of Anna's Hope which is really appreciated. He has a lovelycaring rapport with the children and their parents which is lovely. Everypenny raised will go towards funding the charities aims.”

THE STONESIN STAMFORDIt’s a great month for live music in my home town this month and the Corn Exchange is playing its part hosting Rolling Stones tribute actThe Stones. Universally known as, the greatestrock and roll band in the World, the real RollingStones have sold over 200 million albumsworldwide, with hits such as Satisfaction, Start MeUp, Honkey Tonk Women and Jumping Jack Flashto name but a few.

Now The Stones bring to the stage all the energyand excitement of a live Rolling Stones concert. This is not a ‘tongue in cheek’ approach, but aserious tribute to their music billed as – ‘a show soclose to the original that you will simply not believeyour eyes or your ears’!

Having worked on the actual Rolling Stones’ tourand rubbed shoulders with the boys (bit of namedropping!) I’ll be doing my best to catch this nightmyself and see if they’re on fire as much as Mickand the lads were in St. Petersburg!

Catch them on Saturday March 3, tickets are £16from the box office: 01780 766455.

The organisers of the Riverside Festival tell me things are developing nicelyand as this year’s event will be ticket only for the first time they’re advisingyou don’t hang about.

As the music festival makes its welcome return on Saturday July 7 on theMeadows numbers are limited so demand’s expected to be high. Shell outnow on their early bird deal so you don’t miss out – £5 for adults, £3accompanied children aged 5-12 years and under fives go free but still needa ticket. You can grab one from the Stamford Arts Centre or onlinewww.stamfordartscentrecom.

They’re still looking for volunteers to help make the festival happen so if youfancy doing your bit, either head down to the next planning meeting onMarch 4 at 5pm at Mama Liz’s or call Jenny on 01778 343337.

Keep up to date with all the latest on www.riversidefestival.co.uk

The BBC sports presenter who hosts the grand prix coverage from all over theworld mixed with guests and happily posed for photos for ESP Magazine’sPaparazzi team with Pep Cipriano behind the lens.

It was then a return to the Holiday Inn for a very different event – the KingsSchool prom! Our photographer Chris Brudenell captured the action as studentsturned out in style. They’d certainly pulled out all the stops and donned their gladrags for a great night out.

Ilove the hair, I love the songsand I really love the voice sospeaking to Emeli Sandé it waspleasant not to be disappointedby the lady herself.

With all eyes on her following the Brits, the success of her No. 1 album OurVersion of Events and a headline tournext month this girl has well and trulystepped out of the shadows.

Emeli has been around in the musicindustry far longer than you mightrealise as a very successful songwriter. She’s written songs for the likes of TinieTempah, Professor Green and Chipmunkthrough to Cheryl Cole, the Saturdaysand even Susan Boyle!

Having then crept into our conscious-ness providing vocals on tracks likeRead All About It with Professor Greenand then her own single Heaven, she’struly stepped out into the limelight. Iwonder if it’s all been part of a carefulplan?

“I really wanted to make sure thatwhen I came out and introduced myselfas an artist I had the right music andeverything, I really wanted to take careand time with it,” Emeli explains. “But Iwas writing for a couple of yearsbefore… it wasn’t really planned, butthis is the way it turned out and I’mreally glad I had that experience beforenow.”

The big surprise from this talentedyoung woman is that she’s equallybrainy as she is musically gifted. Emeli

was once studying medicine –specifically clinical neuro-science! Shemay well have become a doctor had shenot got a break in the industry anddecided to quit Glasgow University infavour of music.

“I always knew I wanted to be amusician from when I was very youngand that was essentially what I wantedto do, but I also loved school, scienceand learning and medicine, and neverfound a way to put them all together. They’re all different sides of me and itgot to a point when I thought I reallywant to do music and the door ofopportunity opened and I thought I hadto do it. It was never a case of notenjoying medicine, I just knew thatmusic was the one thing I’d loved as akid.”

So should someone keel over in front ofher would she be able to save the day?

“Well I know my basic first aid,” shelaughs “but I’d definitely need to revisefor something more complicated!”

Writing songs since the age of 11 whilegrowing up in rural Scotland, Emeli waslucky to have support from her parentswhich has helped maintain her progressinto music.

“My parents have always been verysupportive and very encouraging ofwhat I do whether it’s medicine ormusic so I guess it comes from themand how they brought us up. Theyalways say if you work hard atsomething why shouldn’t it work out for

you, so I think that attitude is what I’veadopted.”

Emeli has a very distinctive look with anamazing blonde quiff and a style of herown but isn’t overly obsessed with herimage and the latest fashions – “It’s notreally on my top of priorities, I like toexpress myself how I look and changemy hair when I want. I really lovefashion and finding really cool dressesand things like that but it would nevercome before music, I think it’s just a funpart of it.”

Down her arm is a tattoo of the artistFrida Khalo – a tribute to someonewhose qualities she admires – “Fridawas a very strong woman,” Emeliexplains “and reminds me that youhave to be quite brave in what you doand put yourself out there and say ‘thisis who I am’, and I try to adopt thatwhen I’m making anything.

“I would never want to be limited inwhat I can do and be branded. I lovechanging and trying new things out.”

Next month Emeli will be on tour butsurprise, surprise she’ll still be penningnew tunes for herself and others. There’s just no stopping her!

“I’m going to be writing with Alicia Keysagain which will be good and I’ve beenworking with Labrinth on his newalbum so lots of different things and I’vebeen working with the originalSugababes as well. I really want to getback into writing, I really love that partof it.”

They say beauty’s only skin deep but wouldn’t itbe great to really see what was going onbeneath the surface? Well you can now literallymap out your skin care with an amazing newpersonalised skin analysis system and our Faceof ESP Jessica Lockhart was keen to give it a try.

The Clarity Skin Advisor System 1000 at MyBody Essentials on London Road is a great newaddition to their skin care and provides an in-

depth skin analysis by photographing deep below what we see in the mirror.

All you do is have an image taken of your face from various angles and it’ll reveal any sundamage, open pores or wrinkles on a diagram so its clearly obvious which areas need treatment.

This ‘skin map’ is then prepared into a personal report detailing the problems, appropriatetreatments and preventative measures for the future. By comparing images before and aftertreatment you can visibly see how effective it is. We can all see sun spots, wrinkles and threadveins on the surface but what’s going on underneath can be quite a surprise when you see it foryourself!

Although the team at MBE were able to identify small areas needing attention this new system(which is one step down from those used by dermatologists in hospitals) allows them to see amuch broader area and to assess skin damage at a far deeper level. It’s taken the subjectivehuman element out of the whole analysis process.

A picture paints a thousandwords… time to face up toyour skin issues.

We know Jessica looks gorgeous but like most ofus, sessions in the sun have caused a fewunderlying potential problems for the futurewhich she can now tackle. If you’re concernedyou’ve spent too long in the sun or under sunbedsdon’t despair, you can repair some of the damageand do something about it. Treatments are alsoavailable to help reduce acne and scarring, blemishes, rosacea, age spots and other skinproblems.

Treatments range from light and heat therapy tocosmeceuticals – a specialist range ofscientifically proven creams and lotions whichcan both correct problems and help prevent themin future. These can only be prescribed with aconsultation and the team at MBE can giveexpert advice.

Nail the trend with a helping hand from Nails Inc andthe launch of their Neon & Nude Collection (£22).With minis of three chic nude shades and three ultra-bright neons you’ll be perfectly equipped to mix boldvivid brights with subtle nude shades this spring.Jermyn Street is the perfect shade for a sophisticateddaytime look whilst Portobello (a coral neon) adds anintense vibrant punch to any outfit as well as lookingfab on toenails.

OPI, famous for its hugerange of fabulous coloursand effects, have some greatshades for carrying off theneon or nude look too.Bubble Bath really is thenudest of nudes and I amwell and truly addicted! Thissheer soft pink shade makesyour nails look like they barely have any polish onthem at all but makes for this season’s most

sophisticated nail colourpalette, giving afabulously natural, shinyand well-groomedappearance. Veryfeminine! And if neonisn’t in your nail polishcomfort zone then easeyourself into the trendgently with OPI’s AtomicOrange.

Bobbi Brown also coversthe big beauty trend withher new SpringCollection. Bobbi says –“The most modern wayto wear colour is an

accent on an otherwise nude face.” I completelyagree. The only way to really make your lips pop is tohave a subtle look on both the cheeks and eyes.Alternatively, you can play up the eyes, as long as lipsand cheeks are kept nude.

The centerpiece of the collection is the new eyepalette which features six classic Bobbi shades thatare sure to look flattering on everyone. Pair any of thecolors with a bright lip, such as the Cosmic Pink lipgloss (£17), for a look that embodies fresh, effortlesscool.

Either of the two eye-popping shades (Ultra VioletShimmer Wash and Bluebell Eyeshadow, £15.50)create a perfectly playful and stunning look whenteamed with a nude lip.

Lisa Eldridge for No. 7 has created asimilarly mixed palette of bright and mutedtones – there’s an Enlightening Highlighter(£13), a Brightening Eye Palette (£13) andtwo bold Cream Blush (£10) colours –Blooming Pink and Blossoming Pink – onefor a full-on flourish of colour, the otherfor a natural coral flush. And there are

similar lipstick shades –Blooming Pink to blow thecobwebs away which Iofficially love andBlossoming Pink tocomplement a nude look.

Combining nudeshades and anatural face witha pop of brightlip colour ismy favoriteway to bringtogether anelectrifying selection ofcolour for your spring 2012 look.Experiment this season and find outwhat’s yours!

The NHS has launched a Facebook page – Quit Together Peterborough – to help encourage theone in four smokers in the city to quit smoking.

The page encourages smokers to make an online pledge to stop smoking as well as to raisemoney for the British Heart Foundation by inviting their Facebook friends to sponsor them. It’sbeen launched just in time for National No Smoking Day on Wednesday March 14, aiming toreduce tobacco related death and illness by motivating smokers to quit together.

The Facebook page is a brilliant idea as it gives people trying to quit access to an array of supportservices and information from the NHS to kick the habit, as well as allowing them to share theirstories and offer others help and encouragement. The NHS is hoping that the power of socialmedia and peer support will greatly increase people’s chances of giving up. Online tools such asa smoking calculator help you calculate the savings you could make if you quit and what thismoney could buy. Additionally, you can even download an iPhone app to give you daily messagesof support.

FOOD REVIEW

CLARKE’SRESTAURANT19 North Street, Peterborough, PE1 2RA. Tel: 01733 892681

Clarke’s Restaurant on North Street really is Peterborough’shidden gem. The phrase fine dining is perfectly suited to thiseatery, especially if you fancy a little something that’s goingto stretch your pallet.

The restaurant itself is very classy, minimal (less is moreafter all) and opens up a whole new dining experience. Youwon’t find your table too close to anyone else’s, so it’s greatif you want a quiet romantic meal with your better half. Wehad already set our expectations quite high as we’d heardsome great comments from people who’ve alreadyexperienced the food here, and were greeted by a very wellpresented waitress who promptly took us to our table.

Already impressed with the look of the place and the serviceso far, we ordered our drinks and let head chef Lee Clarkechoose a selection of dishes from the menu to prepare for us– we hadn’t seen the menu so the entire meal was going tobe a surprise.

After a short while the first course was brought to our table– it was faultless! The dish was confit chicken leg, garlic, black pudding and quail’s egg, and was so perfectlypresented I didn’t want to ruin it up by eating it (but I did ofcourse!). I’d describe the portion size as a ‘teasing taster’ ofthe amazing food the chef can cook, with so much flavourpacked into this delicate little dish.

Fresh bread was also served along with the first course –even that was to die for. We were told the bread had beenbaked just a few hours before, and all dishes are homemadeand freshly prepared on the day.

After devouring the first course and all the bread (notknowing there were four more courses to come) out camethe second course – homemade Brawn (boiled pig’s head)with Dorset crab and citrus salad. Now we hadn’t a cluewhat this was when we tried it, and I can only describe thepresentation as near perfect again – it looked similar to thefilling of a pork pie but without the pastry. It wasn’t quite tomy taste but would suit someone who’s a fan of moreadventurous flavours.

Following the Brawn was stone bass, fondant potato, parsnip purée and crispy carrots. I’m not usually a massivefish fan but having tried the sea bass I can officially say I’mconverted – it was delicious. The potato fondant was oozing with moorish flavours and the parsnip purée was aperfect accompaniment to the fish – this was definitely myfavourite dish.

The fourth dish was fillet of beef wellington, ox tongue andcheek with textures of onion. We spotted the beefwellington straight away but didn’t realise we had ox tongueon our plate. At this point head chef Lee came to our tableand was keen for us to try the unknown ingredient. The oxcheek was so tender it just fell apart; the ox tongue was fullof flavour but again is an acquired taste and texture. Themini beef wellington was simply mouthwatering –everything from the pastry to the meat itself. There was justthe right amount of sauce drizzled on the plate, along withtiny cubes of turnip which seemed to break up the meatinesson the plate and added a little kick.

Finally we were presented with a dessert to share – textureof chocolate, which is every woman’s dream! It wasstunning to look at not to mention how it tasted. There wasa mini, melt in the middle chocolate pud, white chocolatejelly, Clarke’s own version of an Oreo cookie, and a smalltaster of chocolate ganache (similar to a chocolate truffle) itreally was a wonderful mixture of chocolately delights!

The menu changes daily with the market, and vegetarianchoices are available on request. Two courses are £30 andfour courses £40, while a three course lunch is £15.

We were both incredibly impressed with the quality of thefood and you won’t find anything else like this inPeterborough. Lee’s knowledge and training is from his timein London and you definitely get top London standards – heknows his food, what flavours go well together and how topresent it in the most stunning way.

GMTV, LK Today and

UKTV Style’s ‘Spa of

Embarrassing Illnesses’

[email protected]

Peterborough based nutritionistKaren Devine continues her series onthe health benefits of eating aplateful of colour…Natural chemicals in plant foods are known to protect healand repair our body. Eating a diet high in various coloursfrom plant foods will bring a host of phyto-chemicals(chemicals from plants) which are known to deliver healthbenefits along with the vitamins, minerals and fibre theyalso contain.

The ‘rainbow’ assortment from our plant foods bring green, red, white, blue, purple, yellow and orange pigments whichdeliver these special chemicals to support health.

This month let’s add a good splash of green. In the Chinesefive elements the spring time is represented by the colourgreen as it symbolises new growth, renewal and regeneration.

One major vegetable that has many health benefits isbroccoli or the little trees as the kids (and the big onesamongst us) call them.

Broccoli is a member of the cabbage and cruciferous familywhich is native to Europe, (possibly for over 2,000 years).

The phyto-chemicals found in broccoli are compounds

known as Glucosinolates. The two mainones are sulforaphane and indole-3-carbinol.

SULFORAPHANE /INDOLE – 3 –CARBINOL may help in –

Cancer prevention

Improving the liver’s ability to detoxifytoxins

Removing unfavourable types ofoestrogen

Inhibiting the helicobater pylori bacterium(responsible for most peptic ulcers!)

Boiling broccoli to death is not advised asit reduces the effectiveness of thesespecial compounds, however slightlysteaming it can improve and make themmore readily available (3-5 mins only).

Broccoli sprouts are also worth a mention as they containmuch higher concentrations of these phyto chemicals.

These can be eaten in a number of ways such as slightlysteamed, added to salads, roasted or blended up and addedto mince, sauces etc to disguise it for the kids or the big kidsamongst us who find it hard to take!

Shivering in the chill orsweltering in the heat… don’t sweat it! Discover‘Peterborough’s best kept secret’– RS Air conditioning – localguys with all the skills andexpertise right on your doorstep! While many other companiess are feeling the heat and goingunder, RS Air Conditioning’s kept its cool and has actuallyexpanded during the recession. A sure sign they’re doingsomething right!

We love a success story and with recommendations flyingforth from all types of businesses they’ve worked with, itlooks like Rob Tysoe and his guys are the ones you’re going to call.

As well as working locally with a number of well knownnames such as the city council at Bayard Place and OneLeisure at Huntingdon, RS Air Conditioning also works withcompanies up and down the country such as Waitrose, andas far afield as Jersey.

Running a business can involve a lot of blood, sweat andtears... but at least you can ditch the ‘sweat’ and make theday to day conditions a breeze with RS Air Conditioning’shelp. They take on everything from homes to majorinstallations, can offer servicing and maintenance to makesure your existing air con doesn’t pack up, and check to make

sure it’s F-Gas compliant (nasty gasses for which there arestringent rules and regs these days!).

When the heat is on that handy desk fan will prove highlyeffective at launching your paperwork into orbit but isutterly useless at cooling you down, and we all know howproductive we are when it’s too hot!

If air con is well maintained it costs 30 % less to run andthat has to be worthwhile when everyone’s counting thepennies. Think about it now, prevention is definitely betterthan cure.

Rob says their secret to success is a simple one – “Myteam are all local, we offer a good service, communicatewell with clients and are focussed. We’re competitive andfast paced and our 25 years of experience means we havea great understanding of the job whether it’s for ahomeowner or a business. We work on projects from£1,500 - £1.5million.”

You might not think it but air conditioning isn’t just aboutkeeping you cool – it’s also an efficient heating systemideal for the home and any size of business. It even ticksthe green boxes as it reuses the hot hair generated duringcooling to heat water and the building.

Whether you’re reading this in your one man office or onthe top floor of a large organisation, whether you need aportable unit or a fully installed heating/cooling system, these are the guys who can help.

“Harston Mill has been using RS Air Conditioningservices for the past four years. I've found them to be veryquick at responding to issues, particularly in anemergency. The engineers are always polite, courteousand highly skilled. A lot of work is out of hours so weneed trustworthy and honest engineers which RS alwaysprovides. They were commissioned to install replacementair-con systems for Harston Mill, and helped enormouslywith obtaining the Carbon Trust Loan. I'd recommend RSto anyone seeking a new installation or maintenance ofan existing system.”Martin Bond, Sagentia

Some say he’s the legend that influenced the likesof Star Wars – and now Disney is attempting toturn him into a blockbuster franchise.

Brought to life in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ century-old novels, the man affectionately known as ‘JohnCarter of Mars’ gets his first big-budget makeover.

Finding Nemo and WALL-E director AndrewStanton moves out of his animation comfort zoneto helm the special effects-laden movie, whichsees relative unknown Taylor Kitsch – fromacclaimed TV series Friday Night Lights and as X-Men superhero Gambit in 2009’s Wolverine – playthe title role.

He stars as a battle-weary former militarycaptain who gets embroiled in a conflictbetween inhabitants of the Red Planet – in acast that includes Willem Dafoe, alongsideBrit actors Mark Strong, James Purefoy andSamantha Morton – and then rediscovershis humanity with this world on the brinkof collapse.

But can such an expensive moviesucceed without a big star name?Disney certainly thinks so.

THE DARKNESSII (PS3/360/PC)You have to piece something quiteoriginal together in the first-personshooter market to stand out – and forthe most part this sequel does justthat.

The monster is unleashed inside mobboss Jackie Estacado after his ‘family’is attacked by a mysterious andpowerful new enemy.

With shocking (but stylishly implemented) comic-book styleviolence he uses his demon arm powers to literally tear aparthis enemies, which – bar intermittent tedium – is a thoroughlyenjoyable jaunt.

KINGDOMS OF AMALUR:RECKONING (360/PS3/PC)Fate is the name of the game in EA’slatest blockbuster, inked bybestselling author RA Salvatore.

Your character – brought back fromthe dead – has no pre-destinedcourse as you manipulate thethreads of fate en route to enteringthe devastating ‘reckoning mode’ across this vast kingdom, which could easily take more than 100 hours to complete.

Despite its combat being more arcade-like than other RPGrivals, this is a vastly enjoyable experience and a worthy entry inthe genre canon.

FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 (PS3/360)After the original FFXIII version wasreleased to much fanfare (and aLeona Lewis track) two years ago – itheavily disappointed hardcore fanswith its linear and more westernisedstyling.

Now those Japanese geniuses atSquare Enix have gone back to the drawing board torelease a truly gorgeous-looking sequel that’s worthy ofthe Final Fantasy name.

Despite an improved battle system and environmentsthroughout, it’s still hampered by being an acquiredtaste – but if this is your thing it really is RPG gold.

SOULCALIBURV (360/PS3)SoulCalibur V really is a game of twohalves.

As a 3D beat ’em up it boasts lusciousvisuals, great arenas, noteworthymultiplayer action – and a better rosterthat axes the awful inclusion of StarWars characters in the last version.

But if you’re not a fan of this type of fighter it doesn’t really bringanything new to the party – in terms of combat and gamemodes – that hasn’t been done before to entice gamers awayfrom Street Fighter IV.

If you’re a ‘soul’ fan though – it does what it says on the tin.

METAL GEARSOLID HDCOLLECTION (360/PS3/PC)Throwing together three all-time classicsproves a recipe for success as Xboxjunkies – and indeed PlayStationfreshmen – get their first taste of thelegendary series.

The package consists of PS stalwartsMetal Gear Solid 2: Substance, Metal Gear Solid 3:Subsistence and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker on one disc– and in HD Solid Snake looks better than ever.

With combat advancements in recent years, newbies may findthe controls a little tedious and aspects of the games a littledated – but this is still a class act.

UFC:UNDISPUTED 3 (360/PS3)After rushing out the sequel a coupleof years back, THQ listened to fans forthe third instalment – and have comeback fighting with something that issimply knockout.

Complex controls have beenimpressively honed, all roundpresentation and game modespolished – and inclusion of the PRIDE organisation is amasterstroke.

Even though the roster has been overhauled with new blood, fan favourites are still there (Brock Lesnar, Quinton Jacksonetc), but more importantly newcomers can now ‘pick up andplay’ instead of just seasoned MMA veterans. Time to tap out.

GRAND SLAMTENNIS 2 (PS3/360)There are very few areas of sportsgaming that EA don’t dominate –basketball is one, tennis is another.

It still may not rule the roost after thiseffort, but it does give it a bloody goodsmash with superb presentation andgraphics – and a great roster of newand old stars from Andy Murray toJohn McEnroe.

But with an indifferent control system and lack of engaginggame modes, this effort still trails the likes of Top Spin – and ismore ‘tour’ than ‘grand slam’.

MARIO & SONICAT THE LONDON2012 OLYMPICGAMES(3DS)Fresh off the back of last month’sWii offering, Mario and Sonic areback for another crack at gold onNintendo’s 3D handheld.

Sega’s offering boasts more than fifty Olympic-related sports, but most are quick-fire watered-down events – from the funtrack and field to the tedious sailing and weightlifting – withmost lacking innovation.

With the lack of the Wii version’s excellent ‘Dream Events’ –this just about scrapes onto the podium as an intermittentdistraction for youngsters in Olympic year.

PLAYSTATION VITAHANDHELD CONSOLE &SONY’S LAUNCH GAMESREVIEWEDIf you’ve ever wanted a handheldconsole with the graphical power of aPS3 – then the new PS Vita definitelyhas the ‘wow’ factor.

It may not be particularly on the cheapside (around £229 for the Wi-Fiversion, £279 with 3G included) but itis without doubt the most advancedhandheld ever – with PS3 standardgraphics on a 5” OLED touch screen.

It comes complete with online gaming ‘on the go’ with full connectivity toyour PS3, great back catalogue of PSP games, front and rear facingcameras, dual analogue sticks – and one of the biggest game launches inhistory.

It’s a fantastic piece of kit, and playing the likes of Uncharted: GoldenAbyss (see that and other Sony exclusive launch titles reviewed online)was a simply stunning experience. There’s also a strong selection of thirdparty titles at launch, like EA’s FIFA football and Capcom’s Ultimate Marvelvs Capcom 3.

The only down points are few and far between. If you’ve got a PSP it’s likegoing from DVD to Blu-ray (as in PS2 to PS3 graphics), so that’s apersonal choice. Then there’s the price point (see above) and the need topurchase a memory card (but some come with console packages) – butit’s easy to see where the money’s gone in such an advanced machine.

To sum it up, if you’re a massive Playstation fan and want to have yourentire gaming world in the palm of your hands – then welcome to the nextgeneration of handhelds.

Jess and Ann Caprio are the embodiment of the pub landlord and lady; I wouldn’tbe surprised that should you have the inclination to look up the term in athesaurus they’d be referenced. Every time I’ve walked into the Cherry Tree eitherAnn or Jess are there. They’ll be behind the bar or in the kitchen or the garden orcasually chatting to customers and more often than not, with a smile.

They took over the pub on September 11, 1995 after Ann had been running arestaurant in Mablethorpe and Jess worked the dray for Carlsberg. “I alwayswanted my own business,” says Ann, “and the chance came to run therestaurant and through that the Cherry Tree.” Such is the work ethic of this hardworking couple that they ran both the restaurant and the Cherry Tree and Jessstill rode the dray!

The Tree had long been a music pub engendered by the late great Pete Carter andstill vibrant Joan Carter. Although there was a two year gap between themretiring from the pub and Jess and Ann taking over they say they weredetermined to ensure its reputation and following in the city.“Our first weekendwe booked Who Knows, Jacob’s Ladder and Porky Pig.” Yes the very same onewe see rocking pubs today. “You have to give people the bands they want to see,Smithy, Retrolux, Porky Pig – they play the songs they know.” Jess carries on –“That’s the ones that they come to see and spend their money over the bar too!”Wise man that Jess.

Their music weekends are also a big part of their diary, the very last one beingMarch 24 - 25. “We’ve spent a lot of time and money on the garden and it’sbeen worth it, the music days are great.” Ann is quite wistful about the last one –“Yeah it’s going to be great but emotional, I am looking forward to it but it will bestrange being the last one.”

It’s not just a music pub the Tree, it’s a community pub as Ann explains – “WhenEMAP, Marshalls and Guild House went we lost loads of custom at lunchtime, the easy option would’ve been to close at lunch but we didn’t, we got pensioners

and community groups in like the Zipper Club, the Heartfelt Club and ScooterClub.” The pub really has become a community facility and that’s reflected by itssuccess as a business and as a charity fundraiser. As Ann tot’s up on her fingersthe amount, Jess helps with the ways they’ve raised it – “Pantos, music days, raffles, theme nights, all sorts!”

“It must be in the region of £30,000 we’ve raised for the Musicians Unionbenevolent fund, Thorpe Hall, Help For Heroes and other local charities,” saysAnn, visibly proud. That’s an amazing accomplishment for a couple who run aseven day a week business and it should be recognised as that.

It’s also a great football pub with Posh fans enjoying a few beers before thematch or watching a big game on the box. Jess recounts a story about a WorldCup match between his beloved Italy and England – “England won and this ladysays to me, ‘I bet you’re gutted Jess’, I said a why? My till is a full to brimming!”– spoken in his best Flettonese and with a true business brain!

It’s going to be a massive wrench for them to leave after 17 years, they’reprobably the longest serving landlord and lady in the area. They appreciate thatbut are also looking ahead to spending quality time with their five grandchildrenand giving themselves a chance to be grandparents. They also plan a major triparound Europe taking in Poland and Germany to catch up with old friends they’vestruggled to see over the years. They’re also going to get a lot of use out of theirmotor home travelling the sights of Britain and Ann’s going to tackle an OpenUniversity degree to prove to herself that she can!

I shall be seeing them at the Maverick Festival in July which kind of takes me fullcircle with them as I first met Jess at Cambridge Folk Festival 16 years ago. Hewas lying on the grass in front of the beer tent challenging all comers to an armwrestle – priceless!

Saturday March 31 is their last night and it’s quite fitting that Porky Pig will betheir last band, it kind of completes the story on what has been an incrediblejourney. You’ll struggle to get in the place that night and you’ll find it more difficultto find a dry eye in the house. I for one wish them both a long, happy, fun filledretirement. I can’t think of a couple who deserve it more than Jess and Ann, theyare very, very special people.

Good luck to Ann and Jess from all at ESP, and many thanks for youyears of support!

And welcome to Janet and Tony who are the new faces behind the barat the Cherry Tree – pop in and give them a warm welcome.

Ann and Jess
