If you’re thinking about taking part in the 2015 PerkinsGreat Eastern Run on Sunday October 11 it’s timeto get serious and step up the training. Easy done withfree training evenings kicking off this month! You may recall ESP’s Darren Grigas recently completed the gruelling Marathon des Sables, the toughest footrace on earth,… while our reporter Mikey Clarke is,well let’s say a more ‘casual’ runner! They both know a thing or two about this half marathon though so whatever level you are, here are their training tips…

Perkins Great Eastern Run

MIKEYHave you ever loved the thought of running a halfmarathon, but love eating kebabs more? I’m here totell you that you can literally – OK, not literally – haveyour cake and eat it too.

When training for the last Perkins Great Eastern Run Iparticipated in, I promised myself that I’d give up junkfood and go out running every night. I never madethose changes, BUT I did complete the runnonetheless. You can too!

“Hang on Clarkey, are you encouraging we eat fattyfoods and that it won’t affect our fitness?” you maybe asking. Not at all. Obviously, the better you eat andthe more you run, the better the results you’ll see. I’msimply saying that it is possible for the average Joe tocomplete this 13+ mile challenge.

When training for the run, although I still found myselfa regular in the McDonalds queue, I didn’t go quite asoften. I made small changes here and there. The bestthing I did – which I highly recommend you do too– was to take part in the FREE training sessionsput together by the city council.

Before attending the first session, I feared I’d besurrounded by running professionals. I waspleasantly surprised to see that there were avariety of fitness levels. There were those thatlooked like they’ve been running all their lives –and probably ran the distance of a marathon just

to get to the training. But, there were just asmany amateurs too – much likeme. And personality wise, there wasn’t a division at all.Everyone was friendly, outgoing and shared thesame goal of wanting tobe better runners.

The best thing about thetraining session was thatthe trainers split us intodifferent groups if wewished. This way we couldrun at whatever speed anddistance that we were happywith.

So, get yourself signed up tothe Perkins Great Eastern Run.If I can do it, anyone can. Butmost importantly, get yourselfto those free training sessions. You won’t regret it.

As I write this I’m just days away fromattempting a 69 mile run along Hadrian’s Wall(and hopefully completing it) so you’d think ahalf marathon should be a doddle right? Wellkind of… The thing is, if you’re racing thenyou’re giving it everything you’ve got so it’sgoing to hurt whether it’s 5k or 100k but youalter your pace to suit the distance.

Since I last ran the Perkins Great Eastern halfmarathon a couple of years back I’ve beenrunning much longer courses such as 85 milescross-country, 150-ish miles across the Saharaand a 40 mile obstacle race so a slower pacewas needed in order to not burn out. For methis is a shorter race and I need to pick up mypace accordingly so I’m heading to the freetraining sessions at the Embankment’sAthletics Track to get some help. It’s puttogether with experienced runners andcoaches who I’m keen to learn from as thisyear I have a special goal.

The last time my Dad raced the GreatEastern was in the 80’s, he was asmoker on about 20-a-day (smokingwas cool back then) and I was a kiddoing the fun run. He even had a fagon the start line as the start gunwent off, he flicked it to the floorthen went and ran a 1hr 36 half-marathon, 3 minutes faster thanmy best time, and he likes toremind me of it too! So I’mhoping this could finally be myyear to beat the old dude.

This is where my trainingneeds to change alittle to suit thedistance. I knowI’ve got thestamina but I needto improve myspeed again. Thecoaches at thefree sessions willbe a big help forpeople of alllevels; either juststarting out freshfrom the couch orlike me with a fewbags of

experience. I’m more than happy to learn fromothers to improve where I need to. For anyonewanting to improve their running I’drecommend getting down there for the addedmotivation and guidance that could make ahuge difference to your training.

The most common thing I hear from peopletalking about training is that they just don’thave time, yet we’re all guilty of spendinghours looking at our phones or TVs. So don’t tryto ‘find’ time, ‘make’ time, get that first footout of the door and then make consistentforward progress week on week.

No matter what level you’re at the toughestrace you’ll run is the one you’re training for rightnow! So get to the track and get yourself somefree coaching and make this yourbest run yet.

Peterborough Embankment Athletics Track – July 1, July 15 and July 29 andthen every other Wednesday until a week before the race from 7pm. Freeparking at the Regional Fitness and Swimming Centre car park.

MY WORD OFTHE MONTH

ESP has dipped its toe into the transfer market and signed a safepair of hands to steer our Posh page into the 2015/16 campaign.

I first swapped runny-nosed school leaver Phil ‘Tango and FruitPastilles’ Adlam from the clutches of the Evening Telegraph in thelate 1990s and signed him to the Posh press office.

We worked together for a couple of years before Phil inheritedmy captain’s armband and with it went on a handful of loanspells to ESP. He made sporadic first team appearances from thebench and scored several own goals.

But finally at the twilight of his ‘career’ we’ve managed to baghim as a free signing and Phil will make a monthly appearance inthis Premiership publication whilst continuing to turn out for thePosh press office on a weekly basis in League One.

Our partnership was reunited about six years ago when Lite FMwas desperate for a formidable pairing to reignite their eveningkick-off performances. But despite almost a full season ofboosting the radio station’s listener figures, we were unable tosuccessfully negotiate new contracts.

Welcome aboard Phil. Let’s do a can of Tango soon.

>> Wayne – are you doing my windows? >> ‘Lettuce’ – happy 40th. You’re as old as you weigh…>> ‘3some’ – are we still doing Riva? >> John – don’t forget the Botolph Green pizza party!>> Mikey and Rach – Bingo again please >> Emma – up for another Harley shoot this summer? <

The event’s been staged with theaim of raising enough money for theunder 12 team to enjoy an invaluablefootball development experience byplaying matches in Holland, Germanyand Belgium.

I remember when I was at Posh Itravelled to Florence with our under10 team where they took part in atournament against Europe’s eliteand the experience our young playersgained was priceless.

Not only did they compete againstthe best teams inEurope thatincluded Juventus,Inter Milan and RealMadrid, but theoccasion alsoopened their eyes toa different culture onand off the field.Every second spentthere was aneducational journeyfor ten year-olds letalone would-beprofessionalfootballers.

If a trip to Europeinspires a Nethertonunder 12 player to risethrough the ranks andone day represent

England then wouldn’t that be astory?!

At the event there’s ample carparking, a fully licensed bar, barbecue, stalls, a car boot sale andlots of other family activities rangingfrom bubble football and bungeetrampolines to face painting and abouncy castle.

Interview

Our local hero is back and soundinggood! Sharon McAllister catchesup with Aston Merrygold as heprepares to Get Stupid…

16 www.espmag.co.uk

Since JLS broke many a pop fan’sheart when they decided to call it aday and go their separate ways,Peterborough’s quarter of thathugely successful X Factor boyband has been holed up in a studioin America. Now Aston Merrygoldis back with a big new solo tune,Get Stupid, a big quiff and a bigbroad smile on his face. Notonly that – he tells me hewants to perform inPeterborough!

“I think what’s going to be mostamazing for me is hopefully whena tour comes together I’m going tobe able to headline a tour with myname in lights, and in Peterboroughyou know. I remember when TheBroadway was up and running andI watched Lemar there years ago,and when you’re going to know90% of the crowd turning up tothat gig it’s going to be amazing!

“Somewhere along the line I thinkit’s destined to happen. I’ve donemany events there and it’s neverquite been Aston Merrygold on thefront door but I think it’s destinedto happen personally, and when itdoes it’s probably going to bemuch longer than most othershows around the world!”

Great news for his hometownfaithful if and when that comes offbut firstly there’s a certain other gigin his sites this summer as helaunches himself back into themusic scene with his super-catchy,James Brown tinged, debut solosingle Get Stupid.

“I think V Festival is going to beamazing,” Aston tells me. “Wenever actually got to play that withJLS and now I’m going to beplaying it for the first time on myown.”

Having been part of the hugelysuccessful JLS for so long Astonadmits it’s nerve wracking headingout on his own and finding a newpath. He’s been off the radar fornearly a couple of years spending

much of his time since the bandsplit, writing and recording inAmerica – now he’s definitely gothis groove on and is stepping backinto the spotlight.

“It was hard. When you’re doingsomething every day of your life, seven days a week with fourpeople you all end up in that samemind set, you all think the sameand act the same and that’s why itworked so well for us. A groupmentality is amazing and that’swhat I suppose every group has toaim for and tries to accomplish, butwhen you’re trying to find yourselfand trying to become a solo artistand put your all into something, itneeds to be all of you. All eyes areon you and everything has to comefrom you, if it’s to be believable. Itwas difficult but it was fun as wellthough, I got to redefine myselfwithin myself.”

So did he have to ‘de-JLS’ himselfto find his own sound and decidewhat direction to head in as a soloartist?

“It was not so much ‘de-JLS’myself – I was part of JLS and partof that is always going to be withinmy music because that was meand I put my 25% into what JLSwas. For me now it’s being able tohold the stage and a song bymyself and hold a crowd and anaudience by myself. It’s obviously aweird one because of what I wasused to but for now it’s a newchapter and a new journey which isexciting.”

Aston has been hard at work on hisdebut album Show Stopper set forrelease in October, but admits heneeded to stay focussed when hewas coming to terms with the endof JLS.

“I’ve spent a lot of time with myfamily and friends and trying to, notget back to normality as such, butjust stay level headed because itwould be easy to get depressed

and get in a dark space if you’re inthat kind of predicament with sucha dramatic change in lifestyle, butit’s been great and everyone’sbeen so supportive around me andI’m just ready for the next chapter.

“Of course I’m nervous, anyperformer anywhere in whateversituation you’re in is always goingto be nervous. When releasingsomething that’s so personal toyou, whatever genre you’re inwhether it be music, sport, any lineof entertainment or business worldyou always want to be the best inyour field, you always want to besuccessful but this is mine nowand people are hearing what I’vebeen working on.”

Aston was part of a bunch of youngguns from the city like Louis Smithwho all hang out and haveremained close friends. It’ssomething he says is still reallyimportant to him no matter wherehis career takes him.

“Yes literally saw them all over theweekend, they came down and wehad a little night out and a day offootball and just chilled.

“No matter what we’re all doingwe’re always going to besupportive – some people are inthe spotlight, some people aren’t,we’re all just going to try and besuccessful and make our family’sproud and that’s our main goal.”

And he remains fiercely loyal toPeterborough – “Yes of course, it’smy hometown, that’s where I’mfrom, that’s what made me who Iam today and people I still lovedearly are still there. I live inLondon now but I’m fromPeterborough – you have to giveprops to where you’re from!”

Aston’s debut solo single GetStupid is released on July 17,check out the great video onYouTube, his debut solo albumShow Stopper will be released inOctober.

Over the last two yearsyou’ve been running, riding, racing, baking,

dancing buying raffle tickets andattending events to help raise £6million for the Thorpe Hall CapitalAppeal, and the city’s done anamazing job for this local charitythat’s so close to everyone’shearts.

We know because we’ve been proud to promotemany of these events and fundraisers and beenamazed at the efforts people have gone to. Butjust look at the results. ESP was invited along tosee the new facilities and all we can say is – wow!

This new state-of-the-art facility built in thegrounds of the fabulous historic Thorpe Hall sitewill transform the care this charity provides. Theold building is a real city landmark but certainlywasn’t designed for the purpose it has served inrecent years. Despite that the nursing team have

done a marvellous job but now they can delivereven better care for both patients and theirfamilies.

There are now 20 new ground-floor patient roomswith en suite shower rooms. They’re painted inbright uplifting colours and each has access to thebeautiful landscaped gardens. We were blownaway by the look and feel of this incredibly welldesigned new unit.

It will work alongside the old mansion housebuilding which will now be used by office staff andprovide the base for several new servicesincluding befriending schemes and hospice athome, with plans to turn the ground floor area intoa community hub.

BBC Radio Cambridgeshire has been a bigsupporter of the cause with their Raise the Rooffundraising campaign and Paul Stainton broadcasthis show live from the new hospice on its launchday to add to the celebrations.

Don’t put your fundraising feet up too soon thoughfolks – there is still some way to go! They stillhaven’t quite reached the £6 million pound target, they need to provide a few more finishing touchesand of course there’s the ongoing running costs ofthis vital service.

Their next big fundraiser is the Starlight Hike onSaturday August 8 with a new format and a newdistance. For those looking for a challenge there’sa 10km route taking in some of Peterborough’sprettiest parkland. For those keen to take the moreleisurely option or maybe looking for a familychallenge there’s a 5km circuit available. Bothroutes will start and finish at Thorpe Hall Hospicein Longthorpe, Peterborough with the startscheduled for early evening so walkers return fortheir triumphant finish down Thorpe Hall’s stunningdrive as the sun sets.

The event’s open to all ages including children. Itcosts just £15 to enter with all entrants receiving aStarlight Hike t-shirt. Walkers are asked to raise£100 through sponsorship. To find out more take alook at www.sueryder.org/starlighthike/thorpehallor call the fundraising team on 01733 225993.

The feisty, rousing sound and lyricsof Fire Under My Feet is anappropriate first single from LeonaLewis under her new label IslandRecords.

Last year the former X Factor winnercaused a stir when she announcedshe was leaving Simon Cowell’sSyco label and now she’s back, beaming with a new sense ofindependence and strength.

The girl with the powerful voice hasfound her girl power too it seemsand has taken more control on thewriting and recording process of hernew album I Am than ever beforeand the passion shows through.

It was last June when Leonashocked the industry with thisstatement marking the start of a newchapter in her remarkable career –“After seven incredible years atSony I feel honoured to be given theopportunity to sign to perhaps themost iconic label of all, IslandRecords. To me Island has alwaysbeen a place where artists can reallyflourish and are encouraged toexpress themselves.”

The first public airing of her newmaterial was in April this year at anintimate showcase in London’s WestEnd. Looking at ease and chattingcomfortably between songs, Leonatalked about the creation andinspiration of the tracks and mediaand music execs went wild over herperformance. It seemed they weresensing she had truly found her ownway in the music world.

This star who made chart history asthe first British female solo artist todebut at No1 in the US BillboardAlbum Chart has certainly sufferedher ups and downs, revealing in anopen letter to fans at one point – “Ithas been quite the roller coasteryear. The emotions I’ve felt havebeen more powerful, in both a

positive and negative way, than anytime I’ve ever felt in my life.

“I chose to swim… I’m not surewhere I’ll end up but one thing I’mcertain of is I’ve stayed true tomyself and I’ve followed what myheart says is right.”

The decision was a tough one, shehad left her record label, “Notknowing whether I was going tomake another record again,” andshe was writing songs without aspecific aim other than the sole, purepurpose of making music again.Luckily, a chance encounter spurredher on when she was invited to asmall Fleetwood Mac gig. She hadnever met them before but hasalways been a huge Stevie Nicks fan.A friend shoved her forward to meetthe band for the first time and Nickswas quick to greet Leona. “Shegrabbed hold of me, hugged meand started singing my song to me.She sang Bleeding Love and thenshe was like: ‘You have to keepgoing, we need you, we need yourmusic.’ She won’t know what ahuge impression she made on meand how much she inspired me andinspired this record but she did giveme that spur of encouragement. She is awesome. Everyone needs aStevie in their life,” she laughs.

The other big boost came fromcollaborator Toby Gad (John Legend,Beyoncé) who worked with Leonaon her second album Echo. Themusic producer invited Leona tohang out with him even when shedidn’t have a project lined up. Theywent into his studio in LA andstarted playing around and suddenlythey were writing what wouldbecome the new album.

Co-written by Leona and Toby Gad,her new single Fire Under My Feet isout now and we reckon it’s a winner!

Your mission... should you choose to accept it, is to go and check out oneof the most exciting films of the year.

The Mission Impossible franchise is one of those rare cases wherethe films get better with each instalment. Hopefully, RogueNation – the fifth in the series – will continue that pattern.

The story sees Tom Cruise return as Ethan Hunt. With theIMF now disbanded and Hunt out in the cold, a newthreat – called the Syndicate – soon emerges. TheSyndicate is a network of highly skilled operativeswho are dedicated to establishing a new worldorder via an escalating series of terroristattacks. Faced with what may be the mostimpossible mission yet, Ethan gathers histeam to try and put a stop to this deadlyrogue nation.

One scene I’m particularly excitedabout is the one that brought TomCruise to Peterborough earlier this year.He was at RAF Wittering air base, hangingoff the side of an aeroplane whilst soaring5,000 feet in the air. Apparently, the possibility ofCruise falling to his death was not what made thisstunt so death-defying. If a bird or a small stone waspushed through the plane propellers, they could havebeen hurled at the celeb with deadly force.

I can’t wait to see this stunt on the big screen – or the film in itsentirety for that matter.

Release dates were correct at time going to press but could be subject to change.

Early reviews of Inside Out fromacross the pond have beenfantastic. With many criticsdescribing it as “Pixar at its best”,it would seem that this is the filmof the month to watch as a family.

This animated flick focuses onRiley, who’s relocated from herMidwest life when her fatherstarts a new job in San Francisco.Like all of us, Riley is guided byher emotions. With Inside Out,those emotions are actualcharacters – Joy (Amy Poehler),Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (LewisBlack), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) andSadness (Phyllis Smith). Theemotions live in Headquarters –the control centre – inside Riley'smind, where they help advise herthrough everyday life. As Riley and

her emotions struggle to adjust toa new life in San Francisco, chaosarises in the control centre.Although Joy, Riley's main andmost important emotion, tries tokeep things positive, theemotions conflict on howbest to navigate a newcity, house andschool.

With many ofPixar’s movies, Iexpect we’ll bebattling with ourown emotionswhilst watching it –joy and sadnessbeing the main ones.

Just when you thought the world of Lego games weregetting a little prehistoric – Jurassic World opens forbusiness.

Featuring all three original Jurassic Park films (from1993-2001) and the record-breaking new Jurassic Worldmovie, this child-friendly game lovingly recreatesSpielberg's universe in brick-building form – with thetrademark Lego gameplay and humour.

It's hard to argue that the Lego gaming concept is getting a touch stale, butwith such iconic T-Rex and Raptor-fuelled scenes included in this package –this takes a giant bite out of previous Lego gaming competition. Gavin Miller

It’s been a busy time for Louis, the one-man whirlwind who’staken the celebrity, but moreimportantly, the sports world bystorm. Not one to shy away froma new venture, Louis now has hisown signature spa range workingin collaboration with Posh Spasbased in Hampton, Peterborough.

The team at ESP, and especiallyme, were curious as to how Louisgot involved in such a coolventure. Apparently it stemmedfrom an old friendship with Andy, the owner of Posh Spas, a freehot tub, a tweet and a trip toAmerica!

“I have known Andy for years andI went to school with his sons,”Louis told me. “When I firststarted building my house, heasked if I wanted a hot tub but Icouldn’t really afford it so heoffered me a free one on thebasis I sent a tweet about it! ThenAndy started thinking, like hisbrain does, that we could do aventure together.”

Louis then travelled stateside tomeet with Cal Spas and the resultwas a Louis Smith Signaturerange of hot tubs.

“With the obvious benefits ofhydrotherapy and as I’m acompeting athlete, it was a no

brainer – we have been taking theworld by storm since then.”

Louis is familiar with ‘taking theworld by storm’ and his amazingcareer now spans bronze andsilver Olympic medals and now aEuropean gold medal for his firstlove, gymnastics. Having baggeda well-deserved gold at the 2015European GymnasticsChampionships we couldn’t waitto congratulate him.

“It felt amazing! It’s been a bit ofa journey, to get back to where Ineed to be, stopping and startingwith breaks, but I’m in a reallygood place and I’m enjoyingtraining – not the pain so muchbut it’s going really well.”

Apart from being back in the gymhe’s still frequently on our TVscreens recently appearing inMurder in Successville andcountless TV panel shows. It’swonderful to see Louis doing sowell and it amazes us how hemanages to juggle such a busyschedule with a calm and focusedattitude.

“I take it all in my stride, there isgoing to be a point when I’m notgoing on the BAFTAS andCelebrity Juice, or going forluxurious meals and it all calmsdown, so I just enjoy it whilst Ican!

“The energy side? I eat well andhave the right amount of sleep –but it’s a juggling act! Combiningworking with a full time sport istough and sometimes you don’tget a day off but then sometimesI will get three days off, it’s just

the way it all works out. Mum’s stillthere supporting me too and she stilleven drops me down at the trainstation!”

Louis’ love for his mum Elaine isevident and she’s been a pillar ofstrength throughout his career. It’s areal charm of his that he appreciatesElaine’s support and how lucky he’sbeen to have the opportunity tocompete at a sport he loves.

“I was very lucky as I had a motherthat was very supportive and shewould sacrifice every luxury she had togive to me and my brother – we werevery lucky and obviously a lot of peoplearen’t in that situation.”

His matter of fact attitude to stardom isvery appealing and it’s easy to see howour local lad has won an army ofadoring fans and not to mention the

charms of his girlfriend, the beautifulLucy Mecklenburgh. But does he find ithard having a relationship in thespotlight? Of course not!

“It’s not hard at all really; if you don’twant to be in the spotlight, don’t stepin it.”

The ESP team wishes Louis the best ofluck in the September qualifiers for theWorld Championships and we can’twait to report back on how he does toall his Peterborough fans!

The latest JCW is the hottest most powerful Miniever built and thanks to Man About Town sponsorsSycamore Mini I got up close and personal withone that presented herself in a little black dresswith red accessories. It was a steamy weekendencounter and we should’ve booked a room.

This car is more stockings and suspenders insteadof your everyday tights. It’s pulsating, addictive andmakes you do naughty things. The JCW is thegirlfriend your mum doesn’t approve of and yourdad wishes he met 40 years ago.

After putting more than 100 miles on her I begged

for one last ride but my time was up. All I have isvivid memories of what was an infectious timetogether and here’s how she stirred my senses…

LOOKS

The Mini has always been about curves. AlthoughI’ll always be a fan of the petite Kelly Brook-likeoriginal, the post 2001 Minis are more, shall we say,Kate Winslet. This means the modern Mini stillrates high in the eye candy stakes but she’smatured from a size 8 into a 12.

And what makes the JCW even sexier is beefed up

arches, tidy lines and a perfectly formed centredtwin exhaust. Bingo wings are nowhere to be seenand there’s a multitude of vents to remind you shemeans business.

PERFORMANCE

This car is deceivingly quick. Her vital statistics read0-62 mph in a smidgen over six seconds and a topspeed of 152mph. The two-litre turbochargedengine is a technological masterpiece, whichdevelops 232 bhp and enough torque to raise theTitanic.

There are several things that deserve iconic status. Among them are WallsFunny Feet, Maria Whittaker and Bagpuss but perhaps the most legendaryof them all is the Mini. And I’m talking about the Mini John Cooper Works.

Within minutes of being out on the road youappreciate how this car was built to ensure anoptimum driving experience. Every componentis perfectly hooked up to complement oneanother and the result is a confidence inspiringhot hatch that makes light work of gobbling uptarmac at break-neck speeds.

Being an old school manual driver, I was a bitsceptical of the six-speed dual-clutch automaticgearbox at first but within a few miles I beganto relish it. Leave it in automatic and the gearshifts are smooth and consistent. It’s a bit likewinning the lottery and employing a butler –everything is done for you but you forget whatit’s like to be in control.

But I like to take charge and chose to give myhands something to do by dictating her every

engine growl with the gear paddle shifters thatsit neatly behind the rim of her chunky steering wheel.

Rapid up-shifts were accompanied by agravelly, crackling note from the exhaust andthis sound of unadulterated pleasure became abad influence at every set of traffic lights Icame across.

I never took her out of sport mode and that’sbecause this car wasn’t made to be driven inany other setting. She was a very naughty girland had me under her spell and surrenderingmy licence would have been so easy to do. ButI fought the temptation and won, which meansI’ll get to drive the manual version set to belaunched later this year.

EQUIPMENT

I was so wrapped up with the seductive drivingexperience the JCW gave me that I didn’t givemuch thought to the myriad of bells, whistlesand gizmos this car comes with. She’s kittedout with so much technology that I wouldn’t besurprised if there’s a button ready to make youa cup of tea if you asked it to.

In terms of driver aids you get stuff likedynamic stability control, traction control andelectronic differential control – all I’m sure that contribute to her planted and confident handling.

Then there are quirky touches like an optionalmini screen that comes out of the dash at theflick of a switch and displays your speed andgear selection. You can also choose the shadefrom a rainbow of colours that you’d like themain dial and door trim edges to be illuminated in.

The standard and optional extras the JCWcomes with really give it the edge over itscompetitors. I just wish I had more time to playwith her buttons.

VERDICT

The JCW is a beautifully engineered hot hatchthat on one hand is happy skipping down tothe corner shop for a pint of milk and on theother will tear your underwear off with herteeth and drag you along to the back roads fora thorough spanking. She’s a wolf in sheep’sclothing and she knows it.

CLASSIC PAIRAT LOCALSHOWSWe’re well into the summer classic car showseason and my first outing was at the recent YaxleyClassic Car Show at the Three Horseshoes EventField where I fell in love with two beauties.

These Fiat 500’s were in fabulous condition andwhile the white one is for sale, the owner of theyellow one has no intentions of parting with hispride and joy especially after it came runner-up asbest car at this show.

Both cars were going to be showing at the BourneClassic Car Show, which took place on Father’sDay. It was the 10th anniversary of the Bourneshow and it’s always one of my favourites to be at.

Another well-organised andpopular event is the Baston Carand Bike Show (July 5) and thisyear’s theme is Back to the Future.Vehicles from both eras of the film– the 1980s and the 1950s – willbe on display including the one and only DeLoreanDMC-12. Best of all there’s a chance to win a ridein the car after the show.

Now in its sixth year, the event is one of thebiggest automotive shows in South Lincolnshirewith over 650 vehicles on display in 2014 and itlooks set to be even bigger this year with morethan 15 dealerships from both mainstream andluxury manufacturers already confirmed includingSycamore Harley-Davidson, Vindis Audi, TCHarrison Ford, Sycamore BMW, Donalds Mazda,Marshall Volvo, Marshall Peugeot, JardineLancaster Lexus, Jardine Lancaster Toyota, UnityMitsubishi/Subaru/SsangYong, Marshall Honda,Sycamore Mini, Robinsons Volkswagen, RobinsonsCitroen, Marshall Vauxhall, FP Smith Hyundai,Wings Skoda and Boongate Kia!

This event has something for everyone and carsand bikes aside, entertainment is in the form of livebands, a full bar with real ales and a barbecue andpicnic area. RTHAN JULY RTHAN JULY

Less is more! ESP nutritionist Karen Devinesays it’s time to quit the overeating habit.

proudly sponsored by

So what is Hara Hachi Bu? It is an Okinawan(Japanese) practice of eating until you are 80%full which helps to avoid overeating. It is onediscipline that I have tried to practice over theyears.

Today we eat too much food that we simply don’tneed. We pour down so much of it and eatmindlessly that we don’t even know we’ve doneit until afterwards when we find ourselvesstuffed, bloated, sleepy and more. These are notindicators to say we’re nourished, it’s quite theopposite – it’s a cry for help from the body inparticular the gut as it gets the full force of this!

The traditional Okinawan’s way has passed onthis discipline of eating along with a diet rich inantioxidants, they can boast the world’s highestproportion of centenarians (those who’ve reached100 years and over). Those Okinawan’s who eatin the way of the western diet (too much food, excess calories etc) haven’t shown the longevitynor can they boast the health the traditionalfollowers can.

It takes time for the stomach to stretch whichthen sends signals to the brain via hormones andneurological signals that say we are full and sated. This natural feedback mechanism is said to takeabout 20mins so when we bolt down food we

don’t give this natural mechanism time and arethen prone to overeating until the first signal weget is ‘stuffed’!

Eating until you are sated or just full is an art thatcan become the norm if you begin to practice thiswith everything you eat. Like all disciplines ittakes time and a little effort, so you may want tostart with the food you’re having today, even justone meal, notice when you’re feeling full. Ifyou’re used to eating huge meals, or that you’reeating a highly processed diet, dehydrated andcompletely out of sync with your own body’snatural rhythms then it’ll take more time. Alsoquestion if you’re not thirsty instead of naturallyhungry.

Start by checking in with your stomach wheneating a meal, it takes a few meals to get used tothe true feeling of being naturally satisfied thanunnaturally stuffed – very different feelings, wewere simply not taught this so our naturalmechanisms that tell is if we are full or not are outof tune so it does take some time.

So much energy is taken up in digestion, I’vewritten about and taught about the virtues offasting, cleansing, eating more nutrients but lessfood for 15 years and I do practice what I preach, particularly the art of Hara Hachi Bu, we simply

don’t need the amount of food we currently eattoday. Less can be beautifully more.

N.B the advice above is where you are ingenerally good health with maybe a few poundsto lose. If you have high BMI or are attendingweight/obesity clinics and are under the guidanceof your GP/Consultant then please take advicefrom them first.

However, just because you won’tsee much of me, doesn’t mean thatyou won’t be treated to exclusivecontent, made especially for thislong-standing publication. During theclose-season, many supporters andreaders probably think employees offootball clubs have a plethora (youdefinitely know this is not Neilwriting this column now) of holidays. That is not the case and it is not thecase for some of the players too.

Defender Jack Baldwin has had atough year. The highly-rated centreback suffered a serious knee injury inNovember 2014 and is not expectedto return to first team action untilaround October at the earliest. Sowhile some players have been jettingoff to all corners of the world, Jack’sbeen getting up early to continue hisrehabilitation either with clubphysiotherapist John Chatfield, or onhis own in the gym.

It can be a challenging time. Theperception of footballers is that theyhave the perfect life. Big wages, bighouses and big swimming pools, butwhilst that may be true in thePremier League, within the FootballLeague times can be tough andwhen you’re unable to get onto thepitch to do the thing you love, thereare mental challenges to overcome.

I spent time with Jack on what’sbeen his daily routine for manymonths and you can see just howhard he’s working to ensure hemakes a full recovery. At the age ofjust 21, he’s been through arguablyone of the most serious injuries aplayer can sustain. He ruptured hisACL in his knee, sustained damageto three out of the four ligaments, had cartilage removed and had workdone on his hamstring tendon.

Yet, Jack always seems to have asmile on his face. “Don’t get mewrong, it’s been tough. However, you have to remain focussed andyou have to realise that there are alot more people out there goingthrough tougher battles. I’ve had along road from when I sustained theinjury back in November of last yearto where I am now.

“I am out on the grass now and thatis the next chapter. I’ve tried to breakit down into different chapters tokeep me mentally strong. Therehasn’t been much time for a holidaythis summer; I’ve been fullyfocussed on the rehabilitation.Maybe I will reward myself with agood family holiday next year,”Baldwin told me.

Of course, serious injuries aren’t just

a physical challenge to overcome.Mentally it can have an effect oneveryone close to the player. Jackand his partner Victoria have a youngdaughter and when he found out theseverity of the knee problem, it washard to bring the family up to speed.

“It’s been tough for everyone. Ifound out the full extent of what Ihad done on my Dad’s birthday andwe were actually all out for a mealwith my Mum, Dad, sister, herfiancé, Victoria and the baby and itdidn’t sink in until a few days afterjust how long the road to recoverywould be.

“Myself and Victoria had a routineevery week. We knew thateverything was geared towards theSaturday and then after the gamewe could enjoy the weekend, butthat’s changed now and every dayhas been a day to try and get fit. She’s been fantastic, as the wholefamily have during this time.

“You can never prepare for a seriousinjury. You’re never going to know

what it’s like until it happens, butmedical science has moved forwarda lot in the last few years. TheoWalcott has come back from asimilar injury and he’s arguablybetter now than before so I have touse that as my inspiration.

“I can see the light at the end of thetunnel now. I’m outside, I’m comingtowards the end of my rehabilitation, but I can assure you that day, when Ireturn, it will be like Christmas Day,my birthday, New Year, Easter andeverything rolled into one becauseI’ve known nothing else but to kick afootball around and to be out for ayear competitively has been sohard.”

Steamin’ Blues. What a night for the final whistle.

After fourteen years of fundraising for The NeneValley Railway, local bass player, Colin Hodgkinson, assembled a great band for the evening playing toa sell out crowd. Colin is currently a member ofrock legends Ten Years After and he brought theirguitarist Marcus Bonfanti to Wansford along withfellow ex Backdoor Too members Rod Mason andPaul Robinson. Add the unique Zoot Money andyou have the recipe for an incredible evening – andit was!

For me, the undoubted highlight of the eveningwas a ‘guitar duel’ between Colin on bass andMarcus on lead during their rendition of a TenYears After blues classic, Good Morning LittleSchoolgirl. It was exhilarating to watch twomasters facing each other and improvising.

A memorable night. It is a special event in aunique setting. Please reconsider. We don’t wantthe final whistle – we want more Steamin’ Blues!

STEAMIN’ BLUESCALLS IT A DAYIN STYLE

The Bell Inn at Weston Hills is holding its annual MusicFestival and BBQ on Saturday July 4.

The annual Woofstock Festival is taking place atThe Angel Inn Yarwell on Saturday July 25 andSunday July 26.

Woofstock is the brainchild of the Angel’sowners, Nick and Diane Lander who’ve raisedmassive funds for local charity, The RetiredGreyhounds Trust. At least 10,000 greyhoundsretire from racing in Britain every year at anaverage age of just 3 years. The RetiredGreyhound Trust is dedicated to finding lovinghomes for greyhounds when their racing daysare over. Nick and Diane have given a home togreyhounds as pets themselves, and this is theseventh year that they’ve held Woofstock at thevery popular Yarwell pub. Over the previous sixyears they’ve raised just over £12,000 for theTrust and they have again organised a verytempting weekend.

Local musicians and bands will be playing live inthe pub’s beer garden, accompanied by a real aleand cider festival and BBQ. Although thecomplete list awaits final confirmation, thosealready set to play include Lexie Green, the LavaLamp Lighters, Rocket Dogs, The Steradents,March to the Grave, Yarwell & Nassington BrassBand, Overspill, Fat Weasle and Beachy HeadDiving Club. That’s what I call variety of music!

The weekend will be compered by DJ, JimBoulton and is free to enter. But Nick and Dianeare asking that attendees consider bringing a canof food or bag of dog biscuits to enable them topass on to our local dog-homing charity.

Huge Congratulations to TheHometown Rock and Roll Bandwho’ve just been recognised withthe Queen’s Award for VoluntaryService for 2015.

This is the highest award given tolocal volunteer groups across theUK to recognise outstanding workin their communities. The bandhave earned the award becauseduring a period of over 30 yearsthey’ve raised in excess of£300,000, which has all been givento local charities and worthycauses.

The band evolved from membersof The Mick Lemmon band and TheDynatones and the line up over theyears has been singers Pete Gloverand Dave Cupit, Geoff Lovell andStuart Smith on guitars and vocalswith Jack Thomas on bass andGraham Seal on drums. Togetherthey achieved the staggering sumraised by performing sell out gigs afew times each year.

Geoff and Graham represented theband attending a garden party atBuckingham Palace in May wherethey met the Queen and otherwinners of this year’s award. Theband will receive the award fromthe Lord Lieutenant ofCambridgeshire at the Town Hall onJuly 22.

Sadly one member of the band,Stuart Smith, passed away just

before the award was announcedafter a long battle with cancer.Geoff Lovell told me –“Stuart knewof the nomination but sadly not ofthe award, and he would havebeen so proud that we have beenhonoured in this way.”

So was the nomination a surpriseto them all?

Geoff told me – “It was totallyunexpected. Obviously it wasn’tsomething we ever thought aboutbut we always aimed to raisemoney for local causes and it’sreally humbling to know thatothers have thought to put usforward. The process and secrecyis the same for this group award asit is for the individual BirthdaysHonours so it’s been difficultkeeping the news away fromeveryone until the officialannouncement.”

So will The Hometown Rock andRoll Band do another gig?Apparently there is a possibility of areunion in order to commemorateStuart. Watch this space!

I hope they will decide to do onemore but irrespective of that andon behalf of all the causes andpeople who’ve benefited and fromthe fans of their music:

Thank you Hometown Rock andRoll Band. You ALL deserved youraward!
