DESCRIPTION

ESP is a niche focused entertainment street press for Christchurch. We will tell the city what's going on and we will tell the stories about those events. Our focus is on the performers, artists, and designers. As much as possible we want to add to the great work a number of other people are doing in the city to promote events and activities; our point of difference is to give a picture of the broad spectrum of creative industries as a whole. Don't believe that there's not much on in this town! We aim to show just how much there is to see and do and help tell those stories.

It’s been a tough old time for the Repertory Theatre but this November they’re looking ahead with their latest production, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

The old Repertory Theatre in Kilmore Street was built in 1929 and funded by the man behind Edmonds Cookery Book. The iconic facade of this little piece of Christchurch history came down in the September 2010 earthquake. In February, the tight-knit company lost one of their young stars, Jamie GIlbert, who was due to act in their next production, Hamlet.

Yet, the non-profit society that’s kept the city entertained for over 80 years was determined to weather all storms and honoured Jamie by going ahead with Hamlet, with Jamie’s father taking his role.

Who’s Afraid of Virgina Woolf? is the Repertory’s third production this year and shows the theatre is not holding back. Woolf is a dark comedy that explores the power play in the bitter marriage

of an aging couple and the evening they drag an unwitting younger couple into their fun and games.

cast is all set to do the Repertory’s long history proud: “The

cast have worked so hard and the set looks amazing. It’s a real treat to be involved in. We’re really excited about bringing the show to the Repertory’s new temporary home at Elmwood.”

Flying Lotus (“Fly Lo”) and LTJ Bukem are NZ exclusive and this will be a big draw card. ‘’Fly Lo’’ is a worldwide, must-see act with an alternate take on electronica and psychedelic experiences. Bukem is a NZ favourite who can turn a party upside down at any point of the day or night. Alex and Hamish are pretty stoked to have these two acts exclusive to NZ.

The addition of Six 60 is a good move as they are dropping a new album in October: this band is certainly raising the bar in the NZ live circuit with strong sell out shows.

Several thousand people are expected at Rhythm and Alps. Gates opening on the morning of the 28th December and music will go through to approximately 4am on the 30th.

Full bar and catering facilities are available onsite. There will be two stages (Main and a DJ Zone, expect some flagship production) and a camping zone. The event is R18.

The first Rhythm and Alps has been set up by concert promoters Alex Turnbull and Hamish Pinkham after a series of test run events in the South Island. They both feel that the timing is right to launch a world class kick-arse event for the people of Canterbury. It’s been a hard year for all involved in Canterbury so it really is about putting on a party where people can really cut loose.

Aside from the bands and DJs, the plan is to lock in other entertainment such as freestyle motor cross with a 75ft jump, hot air balloon rides, helicopter rides, jet boat rides etc. “The motor cross is something we feel is adding an element of difference and pro riders will be brought in for this,” Alex says.

The festival is branded alongside its sister festival and mother ship, Rhythm and Vines. Most of the Internationals and some of the local bands are performing at both festivals. So the obvious benefit is being able to provide touring acts with 2 shows in the best festival sites in NZ.

Our community has asked for temporary venue and event spaces in Christchurch while we recover from the recent earthquakes. This need has come after the extensive damage to many of the city’s key event venues.

The Christchurch Events Village is the new central hub for events happening in Christchurch City. This unique initiative is a project that has come about after a need for temporary event venues emerged following the February earthquake where many of the city’s event venues sustained extensive damage.

The village is situated in North Hagley Park’s Special Events Area and Entertainment Triangle with entrance off Armagh Street Bridge entrance of the park.

The project will be rolled out in a number of stages from Friday 1 July 2011 – Tuesday 31 January 2012, with many events interlinking into the different areas and venues such as the Christchurch Arts Festival, The Body Festival and Rugby World Cup Fanzone 2011.

Chambers@241 //Chambers@241 opened in response to the current challenges that artists and the Christchurch art community face since the destructive earthquake on February the 22, 2011. It is a unique exhibition space that will fulfil a variety of roles: community gallery, dealer gallery and artist-run space. It will represent the work and interests of Christchurch artists, addressing the absence of a more permanent arts infrastructure in the inner city.

Over the next 18 months, Chambers@241 will exhibit the work of up to 70 to 80 Christchurch artists in solo and group exhibitions. With the support of Creative New Zealand six artists’ studios are to be offered at a subsidised rate, providing working artists in Christchurch with the opportunity to re-establish their practices in a supportive, community environment. Chambers@241 will also be available for use by other arts institutions as a venue for exhibitions and related arts and cultural activities in Christchurch.

The Laon are here to take you on that ride, through psychedelic rock, blues and beyond. Forming in Christchurch, New Zealand in early 2010, this four piece never fails to impress, combining their highly original songwriting prowess with flamboyant live performances sure to leave you writhing with joy. Their latest conquest, winning the Christchurch 2011 Battle of the Bands competition, reaffirms their elevating musical journey. Be sure to see them live in action and let the music do the talking.

You’ve won the UCSA Battle of Bands last month, you seem to be on a roll?Yeah, we can feel some definite momentum happening, it feels great to have our foot in the door.

How would you guys describe your style and sound? It’s quite hard to describe, but we would say that It’s a blend of 60’s/70’s psychedelic sounds, our own laon energy, and a touch of something that we feel is new and different.

What are you listening to at the moment? We are all inspired by similar but slightly different things so, we share music all the time when we hang out. It ranges from John Lee Hooker to Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin through to The Datsuns.

What does The Laon mean and where did it come from? Laon means happiness, joyful and cheerful. It’s an old Korean word that isn’t used by people these days, but to us, it’s more than a word, it’s a way of life.

Do you guys have any pre gig rituals? If a gig falls on a weekday we tend to face magnetic south and sip on goat’s blood, but if it’s a weekend finding a goat can be hard so we make do with a rat or other small rodent.

Plans for 2012? We are planning to have a lot of gigs in and out of Christchurch next year. we’d like to head up north and see what people think. We’ll be releasing our EP and Album, and a few sneaky surprises. We’d also love to try our hand at a few festivals.
