Patricia: Finally! That empty building has a new tenant. That’s great for

the neighborhood.Francois: Think again. The new tenant plans to open a strip club.

Patricia: A strip club in the middle of a residential neighborhood?! That

must be a violation of city ordinances. The city won’t allow that.

Francois: I’m not so sure. The tenant has already started moing in and

there is no sign that the city is going tae action.

Patricia: Then we hae to do something to let the city now that

we object to a strip club going into that space.

Francois: "ood luc getting the city to do anything# much less filean injunction. The mayor is ery pro- business and it won’t loo good if he

tries to shut down any business that could bring revenue and $obs to this

dying town.

Patricia: %ut at what cost? &ur ids will hae to wal past the strip club

eery day to and from school. That’s outrageous!

Francois: I suggest channeling that energy into action. If we make a

stink and get media coverage# maybe we’ll get some action.

Patricia: "ood idea. 'ow can we get the local media to coer a

neighborhood protest?

Francois: 'ow about nude picketing?

Patricia: I thin that would send the wrong message.

The dialog for this episode is entitled and “An unwelcome business in

the neighborhood.”. When we say a business or a person is unwelcome,

we mean they are not welcome, the prefix u-n in English meanmeans

not. To say someone is a welcome visitor or a welcome business means

you want them there# you are, you’re happy that the person or the

business is there. o if you haven’thae an unwelcome business, you

haven’thae a business that you don!t want in your neighborhood, the

area where you live, in your city or town. "atricia begins our dialog by

saying #$inally, (at last, that)! That empty building has a new  tenant.

That!s great for the neighborhood%. & tenant t-e-n-a-n-t is a

business or a person who rents a certain house or building. & tenant

is someone who pays rent, who pays money to usually live in or work

in a certain area. o if you haven’thae an apartment, you will have to

pay rent and that makemaes you a tenant. But "atricia is happy thatthe empty building near thetheir house has a new tenant. Francios#

Francois doesn!t think it’s the goodthis isgood news, he says to "atricia

#Think again”..* "atricia says it!s the great news but FranciosFrancois

says think again. Think again means you should consider this situation

again, you should think about it again, usually it means the other

person is wrong, the conclusion of that the other person has reached is

incorrect in your view. o if someone talks says to you #'h, (!m going

to go to )innesota# in the *orthern part of the + when where (!mfrom for a winter vacation”.# (!m going to bring my  body suitsbathing

suit and my sunglassessun glasses because ( expectede+pect it was will be

ery warm and sunny. omeone from )innesota willwould say to you

#Think again% meaning you’re wrong, the way you are thinking is not

correct or you have written reached an incorrect inclusion.

Franciosconclusion. Francois says #The new tenant plans to open a  strip

club%. & strip club is a place where typically women take the clothes

off for men. "atricia says #& strip club in the middle of a  residentialneighborhood??! That must be a  violation  of city  ordinances. The city

won!t allow that.% "atricia is surprised that this kind of business

withwhich of course she you would not want near your  you house, it’s if

anywhere, it is opening up in the middle of a residential neighborhood.

& neighborhood is an area of a town or a city. esidential# residential r-

e-s-i-d-e-n-t-i-a-l refers to homehomes and apartmentapartments in

kind of medium. !a condominiums# a resident is a person who lives in a

certain area. esidential refers to an area where there are mostlyhouses and apartments. The opposite of residential is commercial. !# a

commercial area has mostly businesses and stores. But# but residential

area hasareas hae mostly houses and apartments. But "atricia says that

they can!t open this kind of business in the middle of a residential

neighborhood. "he# she says #That must be a  violation  of city

7/21/2019 ESL 1001.1

ordinances%. & violation is when you break the law or when you break

some rulesrule, you don!t follow some regulation# that would be a

violation. 'rdinances o-r-d-i-n-a-n-c-e-s are laws, usually laws for

a city or a town. #t# it could be largelaws for a county ( suppose also.

*ormally the word ordinanceordinances is used to refer the to a law ofthea city or a town. "atricia says $%he the city won!t allow that”,# the

city won!t permit that. FranciosFrancois says #(!m not so sure. The

tenant has already started moving in and there is no sign that the

city is going to take action%. FranciosFrancois says that the tenant has

already started moving in, the person has already started already to

bring things into the building, he. 'e also says there is no sign, there

is no indication that the city, the government of the city is going to

take action. To take action here means to do something. "atricia says#Then we have to do something to let the city know that we  object

to a strip club going into that spaceplace%. To object o-b-j-e-c-t to

something is to express your disagreement about something, to

protest about something, to let people know that you don!t like

something. (f you watch a crime show in English, a television program

about the lawslaw and courtscourtrooms and judges, you were probably

willprobably hear this word $object” is. It’s something that the lawyer

sayslawyers say when they don!t like what the other signside had saidor youthey don!t think what the other signside had said should be

passpart of the legal cases.case. The lawyer lawyers will often standsstand

up and sayssay #( object# your honor”. %he*# your honor here refers to

the judge. &hen, ell here iswe’re talking about objecting to

something, objecting to this business coming ininto the neighborhood.

FranciosFrancois says #ood luck getting the city to do anything%.

When he says good luck he!s not actually wishing "atricia good luck

when # what he!s really doing it, is indicating that what she wants was

will not happened happen or that what she is hoping thatto happen

probably won!t happen. FranciosFrancois says # ood luck getting to the

city to do anything# much less file an injunction%. &n

#n'unctionin$unction i-n-j-u-n-c-t-i-o-n it’sis when the government

often# the court will tell someone or some  businessesbusiness that they

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/esl-10011 4/5

can!t do something, they stop someone to dofrom doing something that

they believe to be illegal. %hat# that’s what Frencios wasFrancois’s

referring to here. e doesn!t think the city is going to file and an

injunction. The verb file f-i-l-e here means simply to try to get an

injunction from a judge, thean injunction has to come from the a judge, from a court. /ut the city government, the mayor, or other people

who work for the city can ask the judge to stop a business from

doing something, that would be finallyfiling an injunction# asking the

judge to stop this person from doing something. FrienciosFrancois says

the-The mayor (who is a the leader of the city or town) is very  pro-

business  and it’sit won!t look good if he tries  to shut down  any

business that could bring  revenue and jobs to this dying town.*. The

mayor is very pro-business. When we say someone is pro p-r-osomething, we mean they are in favor out of or they support that

thing. o someone who is pro- business, is someone who is in favor of

business, who tries to help companies. omeone who is pro-labor l-a-

b-o-r would be someone who is triedtrying to help workers, especially

labor unions. o you’re you’ll see that prefix pro in front of thea word

when someone is in favor of that or supportsupports that. -The mayor

is pro-business, Francios* Francoise says, -and it won!t look good if he

tries  to shut down  this business.*. To shut down is a two wordsword phrasal verb meaning to close. The mayor is interested in the revenue

and jobs that the business can bring to this dying town. evenue r-e-

v-e-n-u-e refers to money, specifically taxes that the business was

paid will pay the city. "atricia says #/ut at what cost0 'ur kids will

have to walk past the tripstrip club every day to and from school.

That!s outrageous1%. 'utrageous means that!s cra2y, that!s a terrible

thing. FranciosFrancoise says #( suggest  channeling  that energy into

action%. To channel c-h-a-n-n-e-l your energy into something meansto put the your energy into something. %heTo channel anything means to

take it and use it for  precific purposes. hea specific purpose. 'e continues

# (f we  make a stink  and get  media coverage, maybe we!ll get some

action%. To make a stink s-t-i-n-k isn’tis an interesting expression, it

means to create problems so that other people know itnotice that you

7/21/2019 ESL 1001.1

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/esl-10011 5/5

don!t like something, you complain or you do something to get

intentionattention so that other people were reli(edwill reali/e that you!re

not happy and you hope do something about it. )edia coverage refers

to newspapers, television stationstations, radio stationstations,

maga2ines or internet websitewebsites talking about your issue ortalking about you . )edia coverage is when the expresspress# the

media, the newspaper, thennewspapers and television station, stations talk

about your story, they tell other people about what you are doing.

"atricia says #good"ood idea% meaning that!s the a good idea, we

should make a stink. *ow do we get the local media to cover a

neighborhood  protest? )atricia is %, Patricia’s thinking of thean idea to

get the local media, the newspaper, newspapers and television

stationstations in that town or city. %o to cover that is to report onthe neighborhood protest. & protest is when you get together in

public, to indicate your belief about something, often your unhappiness

about something. *ow remember thethey’re protesting a strip club, a

place where usually men pay money to see women take their clothes

off. "o Francios so Francoise suggests nude picketing. %heTo picket p-i-

c-k-e-t means to walk back fromand forth on the sidewalk side wal

with side signs in the area, air that indicate what you are angry about,

what you are protesting about. *ude n-u-d-e means without anyclothing on. Francios is . Francoise’s suggesting that they could get

attention from the local media, if they  pick itpiceted without wearing

any clothing, of . &f course there arethey’re nude because that that’s of

course the kind of business, that a strip club is so they are calling

attention to this issue. "atricia says however, $-'oweer# ( think that

would send the wrong message%. The expression to send the wrong

message means you are doing something that will give people the

wrong idea about what you want or what you are trying to accomplish.*ow let!s listen to the dialog this time at a normal speed.
