General Description The Model ESFR-17 Upright Sprin- klers (Ref. Figure 1) are “Early Sup- pression Fast Response Sprinklers” having a nominal K-factor of 16.8.They are suppression mode sprinklers that are especially advantageous as a means of eliminating in-rack sprin- klers, when protecting rack storage. The Model ESFR-17 is primarily de- signed for use in ceiling only sprinkler systems (i.e. no in-rack sprinklers) for the protection of storage heights of most encapsulated or non-encapsu- lated common materials including car- toned unexpanded plastics of up to 30 ft. (9,1 m) with ceiling heights to 35 ft. (10,7 m), as well as cartoned ex- panded plastics up to 25 ft. (7,6 m) with ceiling heights to 30 ft.(9,1 m). In addi- tion, the protection of some storage arrangements of rubber tires and roll paper can be considered. The ESFR-17 Upright Sprinklers pro- vide the system designer with an up- right option over the traditional pen- dent type ESFR sprinklers. The offering of a 16.8 K-factor optimizes hydraulic design when considering up- right ESFR sprinklers. These features offer flexibility when sizing the system piping, as well as positioning the sys- tem piping with respect to the ceiling. WARNINGS The Model ESFR-17 Upright Sprin- klers described herein must be in- stalled and maintained in compliance with this document, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Association, in addition to the standards of any other authori- ties having jurisdiction (e.g., FM Global). Failure to do so may impair the performance of these devices. The owner is responsible for maintain- ing their fire protection system and de- vices in proper operating condition. Design CriteriaNOTE

The National Fire Protection Associa-tion (NFPA) and FM Global (FM) pro-vide installation standards that mustbe used to properly design an auto-matic sprinkler system utilizing EarlySuppression Fast Response (ESFR)Sprinklers. The guidelines provided byNFPA and FM may differ; conse-quently, the appropriate standard mustbe used for a given installation.

The following data sheets describe theESFR Sprinklers offered by Tyco FireProducts:

TFP312 — Model ESFR-25 (TY9226),K=25.2 Pendent Sprinkler

TFP315 — Model ESFR-17 (TY7226),K=16.8 Pendent Sprinkler

TFP316 — Model ESFR-17 (TY7126),K=16.8 Upright Sprinkler

TFP318 — Model ESFR-1 (TY6226),K=14.0 Pendent Sprinkler

The following general guidelines pro-vided for ESFR Sprinklers offered byTyco Fire Products may be used for aquick reference to help select the ap-propriate Tyco Fire Products’ ESFRSprinkler:

NOTEIn all cases, the appropriate NFPA orFM installation standard must be refer-enced to assure applicability and toobtain complete installation guide-lines, since the following generalguidelines are not intended to providecomplete installation criteria.

GENERAL GUIDELINES

System Type: Wet pipe system.

Roof Construction: Unobstructed orobstructed construction. For example:smooth ceiling, bar joists, beam andgirder, etc.

NOTEWhere the depths of the solid struc-tural members (beams, stem, etc.) ex-ceed 12 inches (302 mm), ESFRSprinklers shall be installed in eachchannel formed by the structural mem-bers.

Ceiling Slope: Maximum 2 inch risefor 12 inch run (16.7%).

Building Heights, Storage Heights, and Commodity: Refer to Table A.

Maximum Coverage Area:100 ft2 (9,3 m2). In some cases, theinstallation standards permit a greatercoverage area.

Minimum Coverage Area:80 ft2 (7,4 m2) per NFPA 13, and64 ft2 (5,8 m2) per FM 2-2

Maximum Spacing: 12 feet (3,7 m) forbuilding heights up to 30 feet (9,1 m),and 10 feet (3,1 m) for building heightsgreater than 30 feet (9,1 m).

Minimum Spacing:8 feet (2,4 m).

Minimum Clearance To Commodity:36 inches (914 mm).

ESFR-17 (K=16.8) Upright:4 to 13 inches (102 to 330 mm).

ESFR-1 (K=14.0) Pendent:4 to 13 inches (102 to 330 mm).

ESFR-17 (K=16.8) Pendent:4 to 13 inches (102 to 330 mm)

ESFR-25 (K=25.2) Pendent:4 to 18 inches (102 to 457 mm).

Obstructions BelowUpright ESFR Sprinklers(Including Branchlines):

Per the requirements of FM, obstruc-tions below upright ESFR Sprinklerscan be ignored as follows:

• Open-web bar joists or trusses hav-ing chords no more than 4 inches(102 mm) wide,

• Bridging or wind bracing no morethan 4 inches (102 mm) wide,

• Individual pipes and conduit 4inches (102 mm) diameter or less(i.e. 3 inch (DN80) pipe size or lesswill not require sprigs), or

• Individual groups of smaller pipe orconduit having a total width of 4inches or less.

OperationThe fusible link assembly is comprisedof two link halves that are joined to-gether by a thin layer of solder. Whenthe rated temperature is reached, thesolder melts and the two link halvesseparate activating the sprinkler andallowing water to flow.

InstallationThe Model ESFR-17 Upright Sprin-klers are to be installed in accordancewith the following instructions:

NOTEDamage to the fusible Link Assemblyduring installation can be avoided byhandling the sprinkler by the framearms only (i.e., do not apply pressureto the fusible Link Assembly), and byusing the appropriate sprinklerwrench. Damaged sprinklers must bereplaced.

A leak tight 3/4 inch NPT sprinkler jointshould be obtained with a torque of 10to 20 ft.lbs. (13,4 to 26,8 Nm). Higher

levels of torque may distort the sprin-kler inlet with consequent leakage orimpairment of the sprinkler.

Step 1. The ESFR-17 Upright Sprin-kler must be installed in the uprightposition.

Step 2. With pipe thread sealant ap-plied, hand tighten the sprinkler intothe sprinkler fitting. Do not apply pres-sure to the Link Assembly, and handlethe ESFR-17 Sprinkler only by theFrame arms.

Step 3. Wrench tighten the ESFR-17Sprinkler using only the W-Type 21Sprinkler Wrench (Ref. Figure 2) andby fully engaging (seating) the wrenchon the sprinkler wrench flats.

Step 4. After installation, inspect theLink Assembly of each ESFR-17Sprinkler for damage. In particular, verify that the Link Assembly and Hookare positioned as illustrated in Figure1, and that the Link Assembly has notbeen bent, creased, or forced out of itsnormal position in any way.

Damaged sprinklers must be replaced.

Care andMaintenanceThe Model ESFR-17 must be main-tained and serviced in accordancewith the following instructions:

NOTEBefore closing a fire protection systemmain control valve for maintenancework on the fire protection system thatit controls, permission to shut down theaffected fire protection systems mustbe obtained from the proper authori-ties and all personnel who may beaffected by this action must be notified.

Sprinklers that are found to be leakingor exhibiting visible signs of corrosionmust be replaced.

Automatic sprinklers must never bepainted, plated, coated, or otherwisealtered after leaving the factory. Modi-fied or over-heated sprinklers must bereplaced.

Care must be exercised to avoid dam-age - before, during, and after instal-lation. Sprinklers damaged by drop-ping, striking, wrench twist/slippage,or the like, must be replaced.

The owner is responsible for the in-spection, testing, and maintenance oftheir fire protection system and de-vices in compliance with this docu-ment, as well as with the applicablestandards of the National Fire Protec-tion Association (e.g., NFPA 25), inaddition to the standards of any otherauthorities having jurisdiction.
