Iron CountyDESTINATIONSSuperior FallsSuperior Falls is a 90-foot waterfall on theMontreal River (Lake Superior/Saxon area).Take Highway 122 north of Highway 2 about4.2 miles. You will cross the Wisconsin/Michi-gan border. Continue another half mile,then turn left on a gravel road. Parking lotavailable.The Flambeau Trail originally started hereat the Mouth of the Montreal River. The 90-foot falls is a spectacular sight, but to ancientNative Americans the waterfall was the firstof many impassable obstacles. For centuries,travelers were forced to portage their goodsand gear 45 miles over the Flambeau Trailto reach the closest navigable waterway.

Continental DivideNear Hurley, stand on the geological divid-ing line where water flows north to LakeSuperior and the Atlantic Ocean or south tothe Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico.Since the rivers north of the divide were notnavigable, early travelers had to portage 45miles from Lake Superior across this point be-fore they could reach a navigable waterwaythat flowed south. Location: Highway 51 andMoose Lake Road.
Annala Round BarnThis is the only barn in Wisconsin madeentirely of massive field stones. Built in 1917by Finnish master stonemason Matt Annala,
it is privately owned. Listed on the NationalRegister of Historic Places. One mile north ofthe corner of Dupont and Rein Roads, fivemiles south of Hurley.
Flambeau TrailFollow the footsteps of Native Americans,voyagers and first settlers as they journeyedthrough Iron County on the famous Flam-beau Trail. Taylor CountyDESTINATIONSMondeaux Dam Recreation Area:W7969 Park Road, Westboro. The Mondeaux Damand Flowage were built in the 1930s. In succeedingyears, the 400-acre recreation area developed in thesurrounding northern hardwood forest. It quicklybecame one of the best birding locations in the region.From Medford travel north 15 ½ miles on Highway13, west on Highway D 6 ½ miles, then south 1 mileon Forest Road 104 (Mondeaux Drive) to the entranceof the recreation area. Park in the paved parking lot.The recreation area offers; Camping, Swimming, BoatLaunch and Nature Trails. 715-748-4875.

Ice Age Trail, Rib Lake:The Ice Age Trail passes just to the north of RibLake with trail access points within the Villageof Rib Lake. The longest unbroken stretch of the
National Scenic IceAge Trail – 60 miles ofit – is in Taylor County.It offers some of thebest hiking in thestate. The Rib Lakesegment offers beauti-ful mixed hardwoodforest trails for 4-, 7-,and 12-mile hikes dur-ing the spring, summerand fall. Enjoy hikingpast many small lakesand historic loggingcamps on this moder-ate ability trail. The IceAge National ScenicTrail enters TaylorCounty from the eastat Tower Avenue inLincoln County. Council Grounds State ParkCouncil Grounds is a state park along theWisconsin River with something for almosteveryone. The 508-acre park offers a varietyof activities and sights year round. Prairie River DellsPrairie River Dells County Park is located northeast of Merrill off of Highway17 on Prairie Dells Road and features some scenic rock outcroppings and ariver gorge. Most of these will be reached by hikingthe park’s trails. The removal of a dam has exposedsome great natural features, and some expertsbelieve the area was once part of the river bed ofthe Wisconsin River. The Van Kuren TrailNamed after Gilbert Van Kuren, an early set-tler to the area, the Van Kuren Trail is in thetown of Strongs Prairie. Lake Van Kuren wasa backwater of the main Wisconsin Riverchannel and eventually was inundated as aresult of the construction of a dam and thecreation of Petenwell Flowage in 1949. TheVan Kuren Trail is a 2.7-mile, year-round trailthat meanders through rolling landscape,winding through stands of oak and pine,and affording views of wetlands and the23,000-acre Petenwell Flowage. Quiet ob-servers will see a variety of birds and otherwildlife. Interpretive markers along the trailprovide explanations of some of the uniquefeatures, and near the midpoint, a shelterand fire ring are provided. The Van KurenTrail is in western Adams County off ChicagoAvenue in Strongs Prairie.

Roche-A-Cri State ParkCenturies before it served as a naturallandmark along French fur-tradingroutes, Roche-A-Cri Mound held sig-nificance for the area’s earliest inhab-itants. The mysterious carvings in thebare rock of the south face bear wit-ness to their passing. The archaeologi-cal importance of these prehistoric artforms has earned Roche-A-Cri Moundits listing on the National Register ofHistoric Places. The 300 foot castel-lated sandstone mesa, from which thepark derives its name, once was anisland in glacial Lake Wisconsin. Thesummit, now accessible by a stairwayof solid white-oak planks, offers abreathtaking, 120-mile panorama.The varied terrains of the 425-acrepark, designated a State NaturalArea, include grasslands, open cliffs,pine barrens, oak forest, prairie andthe meandering Carter Creek.Roche-A-Cri State Park offers 42wooded campsites with fire rings.One site is handicapped accessible,and 25 others can be reserved. Quincy Bluff State Natural AreaQuincy Bluff is located in what the first inhabitants called“the valley by Chicoongrah (window in the rock).” It isa 10,500-acre natural area jointly administered by theWisconsin chapter of The Nature Conservancy andthe Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Itcontains a vast wetland complex sandwiched be-tween sandstone ridges and buttes such as QuincyBluff, Lone Rock and Rattlesnake Mound. Extensiveoak and pine barrens and northern dry forestborder the preserve. The DealChicken is a big fan ofthis area because it is home to another of my wingedfriends, the very rare Karner Blue Butterfly. Ninerare species of plant also can be found at Quincy Bluff.Recreational activities such as hunting, fishing, trapping,bird-watching and hiking are permitted so long as the rareresources are not harmed.

Woodson History Center/Yawkey House MuseumHome to the Marathon County HistoricalSociety, the Woodson History Center isa lovely brick house built in 1914 with arich history. Today it contains the libraryand archives, artifacts and exhibits.Across the street lies the Cyrus and AliceYawkey house, a 1900/1901 ClassicalRevival-styled house. The Yawkey Houseis a fine example of a wealthy lumber-man’s house between the years of 1908and 1915. It features beautiful stainedglass windows, art glass lighting fixturesand many original Yawkey furnishings.A small entrance fee is charged fornonmembers of the Society. The house,which was listed on the National Registerof Historic Places in 1974, is open year-round. Wisconsin Concrete ParkHighway 13, south of Phillips. In 1950, Fred Smith began to cre-ate a collection of cement statuary. Smith built the figures onwooden frames wrapped with mink wire, covered with hand-mixed cement and decorated with bits of colored glass, mirrors,metal and stone. Before his death in 1976, Fred Smith createdmore than 200 figures, including deer and other native wildlife,an eight-horse brewery wagon hitch, two larger-than-lifelumberjacks, Ben Hur, Sacajawea, Paul Bunyan, Abraham andMary Lincoln, friends and mythical and legendary creatures.The park is open daily during daylight hours year-round.
