From the ES Administrationrom the ES AdministrationDear Elementary School Parent s,

    Visible Thinking

Last Tuesday we held our last parent coff ee morning for

this year, where we focused on the notion of visible

thinking. By this we mean providing students wit h

opportunit ies to arti culate, st ructure and document

their changing understandings wit hin an area of

learning. Visible thinking is defined as an approach to

t eaching and learni ng t hat emphasizes t he use of

thinking routines and documentation to make thinking

more visibl e in classrooms. Thinking rout ines support

t he development of students as self -dir ected learners

and learning for understanding (Harvard Proj ect

Zero). Part of the learning cycle involves having

students taking a moment to press the pause butt on

on their learning and refl ect on how their

understanding is evolving and what is inf luencing

this. This gives children the sense that t hinking is

highly valued, and promotes the understanding thatskil ls in t hinking creat ively and crit ically can be taught

explicit ly in order t o deepen targeted learning. The

presentation notes are now on the ES Blog for those

want ing to delve a bit deeper, or alt ernat ively, have a

browse through the Harvard Proj ect Zero websit e on

visible t hinking, for a wealth of materials.

    Hats

We are now in the midst of summer in the Phil ippines,

bringing with it hot weather and intense sun exposure.

As well as reminding everyone to bring and refill their

water bottles, we are also encouraging all our students

to wear hats in their morning break and lunch time in

the playground / ES field during this period. We will

cont inue t o reinforce t his message as much as possible

at school and hope that you too can support this at

    home.

Exciting developments for next school year:

In our quest to ensure ISM maintains and keepsimproving the wonderful sports facilities we haveit gives me great pleasure to advise that work hasalready started on the new roof top tennis courtproject and that work will be starting very soonon resurfacing our track.

The tennis court redevelopment is a largescale project which when completed in mid/lateOctober will provide a fully covered facility for

tennis and PE classes with the addition of twocourts (currently 6 to 8 courts), along with male/female locker rooms, extra storage space forequipment, rollaway tennis nets, a small officeand two areas of spectator bleachers.

Our athletics track will be resurfaced and thejumps runway/landing pit area will be relocatedslightly to improve this facility. We will also beadding an additional shot-put circle, grading andre-sowing this grass in the landing area for shotput.

ISM hosts IASAS Tennis and Track & Field next

school year and these improvements will ensurewe have the best facilities possible to host theIASAS Championships in 2013 and for our stu-dents/teams to use for their PE classes and teamtraining on a day to day basis during the schoolyear.
