BOOKS

Life at School (Then and Now) by Vicki Yates is great for teaching students the differences between school life in past and in modern day.

This book does a great job defining past, present, and future. It also compares school life in the past and present very well.

Communication (Then and Now) by Robin Nelson is great for students to compare ways of communicating in the past and present. The book also contains a timeline of communication evolution!

Life at Work (Then and Now) by Vicki Yates is about adults working and compares their work from past to present.

POETRY "ATTENDING A ONE ROOM SCHOOL"

THERE WASN'T ANY PRESCHOOL OR KINDERGARTENAT AGE SIX YOU STARTED IN FIRST GRADE,I COULD NOT WRITE MY NAMENOT ONE NUMBER OR ABC I HAD EVER MADE.

THERE WERE NO HOT LUNCHESOR BREAKFAST SERVED ON A PLATE,FROM OUR LITTLE TIN LARD BUCKETSCOLD LUNCHES IS WHAT WE ATE.

FROM FIRST TO SEVENTH GRADEONE TEACHER TAUGHT US ALL,STUDENTS SAT IN ROWS IN ONE BIG ROOMNO BATHROOM, GYMNASIUM OR STUDY HALL.

THE BUILDING HAD TWO DOORSMAIN ONE UP FRONT - ONE AT THE BACK,TWO CLOSETS ON EACH SIDE OF THE DOORUSED FOR LUNCH BUCKETS AND A COAT RACK.

HEATING STOVE SAT IN THE MIDDLETHE ROOM WAS OFTEN DRAFTY AND COLD,

THIS ONE ROOM SCHOOL BUILDINGHAD BEEN STANDING FOR MANY YEARS - WAS GETTING OLD.

THERE WASN'T A BATHROOMRAISE YOUR HAND - "IF YOU HAD TO GO,"TWO LITTLE OUT-HOUSES SAT FAR APARTDOWN AMONG SOME BUSHES AND WEEDS IN A FENCE ROW.

WE TOOK TURNS BEATING THE ERASERS CLEANPOUNDING THAT CHALK DUST WAS A LOT OF FUN,I LIKED DOING THIS BETTER THANPLAYING BASEBALL AND NEVER MAKING A HOME-RUN.

HAD TO WALK ABOUT HALF MILE TO GET HOMEWE WERE ANXIOUS TO GET HOME TO PLAY,THERE WEREN'T ANY BUSES FOR US TO RIDESOMETHING WE DID ALMOST EVERY SCHOOL DAY.

PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG AND A PRAYERAFTER THE TEACHER RANG THE BELL,IF YOU DID SOMETHING WRONG - GOT A SPANKING

NO ONE WAS SENT HOME OR EXPELLED.

WE WROTE WITH A YELLOW NO. TWO LEAD PENCILNO ASSORTED COLORS IN GEL BALL POINT PENS,NO FOLDERS, OR SPECIAL BINDERSNO BACKPACKS TO CARRY OUR BOOKS IN.

HOW DID THE TEACHER TEACH SO MANY GRADESHOW DID SHE GET IT ALL DONE IN ONE DAY,WE HAD TIME FOR LONG RECESSESGOT TO GO OUTSIDE - HAD GAMES TO PLAY.

THERE WEREN'T BUT A FEW IN EACH GRADEMAYBE TWO - PERHAPS FOUR,TWENTY-FIVE OR THIRTY NEIGHBORHOOD CHILDRENBUT THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN TAUGHT, HAD

THERE BEEN MORE.

EVERYONE LINED UP AFTER PLAYINGWATER BUCKET SAT AT THE BACK DOOR,I AM GLAD I GOT TO GO TO A ONE ROOMTHEY ARE NO LONGER BEING USED - HOW SAD.

CHILDREN ATTEND MODERN SCHOOLS TODAYONE ROOM SCHOOLS ARE MEMORIES OF THE PAST,THOSE CARE-FREE DAYS OF MY CHILDHOODHAVE ALSO GOTTEN AWAY MUCH TOO FAST.

Written.....August 13, 2008Many pleasant memories of attending a one room school. I knowthings are better for children today - but those old schools were okay.

OLD FASHIONED SCHOOL YARD GAMES

These games were played just like they are today! Children used to play these games in the school yard!

A grid is drawn and numbered. Then the child tosses a rock a skips to the square it landed on!

Two players hit the ball on the rope in opposite directions until it wraps around the pole!
