The ErP - Energy related Product - legislation (Commission Regulation (EC) No 245/2009) promotes energy efficiency and energy-efficient products in terms of their environmental impact.

This legislation is a directive of the European Parliament and council regarding eco-design requirements for lamps, ballasts and luminaires. Formerly known as the EuP, it affects the availability of such products in EU27 countries.*

Reducing CO2 by 20%ErP is one of three environmental protection directives implemented towards electrical and electronic products. (The others are WEEE – recycling, and RoHS – restriction of hazardous substances.)

The ErP initiative plans to reduce CO2 emissions in the EU by an incredible 20%, saving an estimated 38 TWh, in 2020.**

Towards a greener world

GE Lighting is fully committed to reducing carbon emissions. As a member of the European Lamp Companies Federation, we have helped develop the new energy-efficient regulations now being implemented, such as ErP.

Phasing outA number of popular lighting types will have to be phased out by 2017 including selected ‘standard’ high-pressure sodium (including retrofit), high-pressure mercury, and standard performance metal halide.

Products will not be available on the market in EU27 countries: only stock already in the distribution channel may continue to be sold.*

Phasing out will happen in various stages starting 13th April 2012 (tertiary – street lighting sector).

* Including Norway and Switzerland.** In 2005, estimated annual energy consumption for products subject to this regulation within the EU was 200 (TWh) terawatt hours (corresponding to 80% CO2 emissions.) If no actions get taken, the estimated energy consumption in 2020 would be 260 TWh.

The regulation sets minimum performance and efficiency standards in the domestic and tertiary (office, industrial and street) lighting sectors for factors such as:

EfficacyLumen maintenanceLamp survival

Color rendering (Ra)

The HID lamps affectedHID lamps subject to the ErP legislation are those with E27, E40 and PGZ12 bases (exemptions include directional light sources, reflectors, non white lights – excluding HPS, lamps for non general purpose lighting, and UV sources).

Non compliant lamps will not be able to bear the CE marking.

As non-compliant lamps become obsolete, end users will need to switch to more energy efficient lamps – usually through a simple relamping option. And as older technologies become obsolete, new installations will be required.

Current installations using outdated technology will eventually need to be replaced by one of the following solutions:

Retrofitting – Lamp only replacement

Replacing lamp and ballast – Lamp and ballast

replacement combination

Before After
