O Sapientia, quæ ex ore Altissimi prodisti, Attingens a fine usque ad finem, Fortiter suaviter disponens que omnia: Veni ad docendum nos viam prudentiæ.

O Adonai, et Dux domus Israel, Qui Moysi in igne flammæ rubi apparuisti, Et ei in Sina legem dedisti: Veni ad redimendum nos in brachio extento.

* Although not in the text of the O Antiphons, the words “ero cras” are an acrostic formed in reverse from the antiphons' seven names to address the Messiah: Emmanuel, Rex Gentium, Oriens, Clavis David, Radix Jesse, Adonai, Sapientia.

(O.) I will be present tomorrow.

O Wisdom, which comes from the mouth of the Most High,Spanning from one end to the other,Mightily and sweetly ordering all things: Come to teach us the way of prudence.

O Adonai, and leader of the House of Israel,Who appeared to Moses in the fire of the burning bush, And gave him the law in Sinai: Come to redeem us in your outstretched arm.

O Root of Jesse, who abids as a sign for the peoples, Before whom kings will hold their mouths,To whom the nations will make their prayer: Come to deliver us, no longer delay.

O Key of David and scepter of the house of Israel; Who opens and no one can shut; Who shuts and no one can open:Come and lead the prisoners from the prison house, Dwelling in darkness and the shadow of death.

O Dawn, splendor of light eternal And sun of justice: Come and enlighten those dwelling in darkness and the shadow of death.

Program Note:

The Stuttgart German American Community Chorus and its director Thomas L. Carter commissioned this composition in 2013. The O Antiphons are the ancient chants specified for the week before Christmas, each day calling the longed-for Messiah by a different name, e.g. O Wisdom, O Root of Jesse, O Dawn. Although this piece sets the traditional melody in most movements, it begins with a short prelude in which the organ and choir introduce a motif for "ero cras," i.e. "I will be present tomorrow," which is the Divine answer to these prayers of anticipation. In the prelude the choir sings the pitches that begin each antiphon on the exclamation "O," and these notes are heard again on the word "veni" or "come" recurring in every antiphon.

The first, "O Sapientia" presents the chant melody intact within a choral texture, adding a buildup on the word "veni" or "come" and a reiteration of the final phrase. Next "O Adonai" conveys excitement in a gigue begun by tenors and basses and taken up by the organ against the chant melody on sustained notes. "O Radix Jesse" is for tenors and basses in two- and three-part harmony, with organ interludes like breezes shifting among the leaves over a well-grounded, vital pedal line — a musical "Root of Jesse." The central antiphon "O Clavis David" is the longest text and most complex treatment, presenting the chant in the style of Renaissance polyphony with modern harmony and interjected calls to the "Key of David." This antiphon shifts the prayer focus from delivering "us" to others, namely prisoners dwelling in darkness and the shadow of death.

The sopranos' and altos' turn comes in "O Oriens," which focuses on light. The organ portrays a mysterious daybreak: rising sun, clearing mist, shafts of light. The singers energetically invoke the "Rising Dawn" and then break into a tuneful duet before the chant melody returns to recall those dwelling in darkness. "O Rex Gentium" is a stately march for the full choir in grand homage to the King. In the last section, the organ introduces "O Emmanuel" by returning to the mood of the first antiphon. As before it presents the chant intact and then builds again, this time to a strong plea for deliverance.
