FILL IN EACH STEP FOR EACH COURSE TAUGHT (UNLESS PART OF MULTIPLE SECTIONS, FILL IN AS A TEAM)

P67 "Digital Negatives for Contact Printing"

STEP ONE 1. List the course objective you assessed as taken from the official course outline: "F.

Demonstrate proficiency in electronically enhancing the aesthetic and practical content of photographs." ,

2. List your method of assessment. This method can be an essay, test, student performance, survey, or other.

An assessment was performed via survey. The questions and results are attached at the end of this form and asked the students to respond on a scale from No Gain - Great Gain as well as fill in the blank answers.

Questions included: As a result of your work in this class, what GAINS DID YOU MAKE in the following SKILLS?

• Rate your ability to capture and prepare digital files for output to digital negatives.

• Rate your ability to convert images using the Black and White adjustment in Photoshop.

• . Rate your to successfully employ digital imaging techniques to manipulate and correct photographs for Digital Negatives.

• Rate your ability to use the black and white darkroom for working on digital negatives.

• Rate your ability to capture / scan an image correctly for Digital Negative output.

Fill in Questions: • What are the three most important things you learned in this class? • Were there things you did not learn in this class that you wish you had (if

applicable )? • Which assignments (in or out of class) were helpful to your learning and

why? • Were there assignments you did not find helpful to your learning? If so, what

were they, and why weren't they helpful to you? • What changes (if any) would improve your learning experience in this class?

(Possible areas to discuss if relevant might include texts, handouts, group projects, individual projects, equipment access, lecture topics, instructional approach, or pacing of course to name a few.)

3. Analyze the results of your findings in a few paragraphs and base your findings observations from step 2.

increased knowledge of darkroom color and B& W correction in photoshop skills in photoshop That 1 like the process improved a lot of skill in photoshop importance of print quality How to make a digital negative. inkjet printers must be cleaned often to produce good negatives, and even then, sometimes, well ... printer Alternative photo methods (scanner, lumens, photograms, contact printing) the process of making a digital negative interaction with teacher and students around work, great organizing of materials online via website Do not rush fixing your photographs. that 1 like B&W! (I only thought 1 loved color) ... greatly inhanced view of photography in general scratch removal/cleaning up in photoshop how important contrast/step wedge/curves are

Were there things you did not learn in this class that you wish you had (if applicable)? • Not having photoshop experience previously, 1 feel the material was more than enough for me to

digest. A difficult but enjoyable challenge nothing • 1 wanted to know about liquid emulsion process, but it might be mixed media subject. • No •

1 would have liked more time on the digital negative process, specifically in relation to output curves for alternative processes. not applicable 1 think 1 needed to spend more time on setting the white and black points, that was a little confusing to me still and felt rushed. 1 wish we had more time with another assignment producing a digital negative and printing rather than just leading into the final project. Maybe something specific beforehand. It was only at the last portion of the class did we actually start producing digital negatives. dust was a problem, not sure if better procedure exist for helping with this. No, the class was thorough.! missed a lot of days due to work, so 1 feel it is not applicable for me to answer this question as I'm sure 1 missed some key lectures on workflow and output. No No 1 feel that 1 learned a great deal

Which assignments (in or out of class) were helpful to your learning and why?

• Creating the Share Photo and the Series - which 1 will continue to work on all the assignments are total new to me, through these assignment 1 learn how to handle the color images converted to black & white. Of course, 1 also got the knowledge how to use the scanner to take picture.

• Camera-less photography such as lumen print and scanner as a camera completely changed my understanding of photography and helped me think outside of the box and be creative.

• All of the assignments were helpful. The scanner as camera was helpful in teaching me how to use a scanner to create interesting images. The photogram assignment was helpful because a) 1 learned how to use the darkroom which 1 had never done before and b) 1 learned how to see light in a different way than what 1 am used to. The triptych assignment was helpful to really understand the possibilities of using a digital negative to put images together, allowing for greater cohesiveness in tone, quality, etc. The digital neg assignment taught me how to make and use digital negatives.

• 1 liked the Lumen printing and scanner assignments. • photogram why? 1 did not make them since photo 51. I love it.

Scanner assignment, photogram and lumen demonstration and assignment, mostly all of them! Using the step wedge on the specific paper I was using and bringing it back to the monitor to correct the image knowing it may look visually different on my monitor, but technically would produce the right image in the darkroom. printing an edition - made me realized the facility to having a digital negatives. Final project was great, made me realize and start what will be an ongoing project. the assignments getting us used to working and playing around in photoshop were helpful, any & all workflow lectures were helpful liked the lumen & photgram assignments and the process knowledge it brought. Photoshop assignments greatly enhanced my Photoshop abilities the final assignment The step wedge assignment,

I can not think of what was not helpful not applicable Every assignment was really helpful and interesting to learn. No I had done photograms before, and while interesting at times, I don't always find them exciting. Maybe because I'd already done them and I wanted to get onto something new. not applicable Hand coloring. I also felt the reader was not super necessary other than a few critical handouts. Some articles were very opinion based, one has the pages out of correct order (numbered incorrectly), etc. Nope the lumin printing was as central although interesting. I wish that we could have gotten to producing digital negatives earlier on though. The lumen printing was interesting, but I don't quite see how helpful it is to learning digital negatives. Seems like it's more of a multi-media-photo class type thing. Only because I have prior darkroom experience, I did not find the photograms helpful; however, I did find them fun and didn't mind doing them any ways :).

What changes (if any) would improve your learning experience in this class? (Possible areas to discuss if relevant might include texts, handouts, group projects, individual projects, equipment access, lecture topics, instructional approach, or pacing of course to name a few.)

• The only thing for me was the pacing - I could not keep up in class and spent much time outside of class to stay in step

• I like the instructor to set up more video so we have more time to refresh out knowledge. • I wish I could pay for printing credits at issue room. • I kind of wish this was 2 classes. Or that there was an advanced digital negatives class. Especially

because of the restrictions to the computer lab with the printer. Overall, it was a GREAT class. • It's called a digital negative class and we really didn't get to the digital negative aspect until the

last month of the semester. I would have liked more time making and outputting digital negatives. The pacing could have been quicker, less time to complete projects and maybe one more digital neg assignment.

• In the beginning of the semester I felt pretty overwhelmed and like I was having a hard keeping up. Almost each week it felt like we were learning something new and I would have liked more time to really comprehend each method. Toward the end I really appreciated that it slowed down a bit so I had lots of time to practice the contact printing and get fully comfortable. Overall I LOVED the class and learned SO much. Erika is an amazing teacher and really works to inspire her students by combining instruction with inspirational examples of other's work, encouraging students to get involved in extracurricular activities, and being available outside of class. This is the best class I have taken at CCSF yet where I felt I got a really well rounded education that transcended the classroom! '

• The class would almost be better served as two days a week. One lecture and one lab. Darkroom classes are far too time consuming to just meet one day/week.

• better access to prints since we only had one printer to use and that access was somewhat convoluted.

• Starting the darkroom process sooner would be great. I think the class should have prerequisites of photos hop and darkroom experience to expedite buildup time before reaching actually printing from the digital negatives.

• I think it would have been nicer to speed up the learning process for the digital negative output and allow more time to play with our digital negatives in the darkroom.

• Seemingly we used the reader more than the book. Might question the book versus the reader and the multiply links you provided

• I didn't use the book or reader at all. Waste of money. • THe instructor was so helpful and was always available with her creative input

4. Determine if a course of action is needed in regard to augmenting instruction, modifying assignments, course outline curriculum improvement etc. Describe your plan for improving the course:

The student feedback was very helpful. My biggest challenge is that students are supposed to come into the class with BOTH photoshop and darkroom experience but usually never do. In order to accommodate that I cover both basic photoshop and darkroom techniques as applied to Digital Negatives.

A HUGE challenge restricted access to the lab and lack of printers and the laborious process in which to access the one. We really still have no printers available to students, yet it is a part of the course outline. The course outline itself needs to be updated to reflect new technologies and software.

Plans for improvement:

Examine assignments to ensure they are building and reviewing skills week by week.

Provide current up-to-date software version / tutorials when possible

Continue to work with the college and my dept to get printers online for students
