Comments: This looks good. Thanks for working to keep students safe. While side streets aren’t typically a first priority, Imarked some neighborhoods because students are walking on thesestreets to school or to bus stops. An important consideration is theseside streets are used every day by folks avoiding Washington Aveinbound and outbound. Particularly, Sherwood and the Presumpscotto Ocean Ave neighborhood right side and Providence toPresumpscot to Sherwood, cutting off that whole section ofWashington Ave. If you have any questions please call.

A street sign on Portland's Eastern Promenade tells the story:

Temperature slips and so do MainersWednesday, January 5, 2000
Even with some salt and sand on the sidewalks, it was still hazardous going for pedestrians.
As workers rushed to offices in downtown Portland, one desperate pedestrian was seen crawling along the sidewalk on Pearl Street because it was too slippery to stand.
Far fewer people were hurt in car accidents in Greater Portland than in falls Tuesday.

Tips for Creating an Effective School Walking Routes Study
1. Take lots of digital pictures with dates on the file.
2. Observe kids/people using the routes in all seasons.
3. Ask administrators/engineers/ workers why they do it that way and if they think it is the best way.
4. Ask them what the best way is.
5. Make it easy to participate in your project.
6. Make your results public.
7. Give people the opportunity to say no.
