The CORNSTALK Gazette FEBRUARY 2015 - 3The Folk Federation of NSW ONLINE - jam.org.au

Dear Folk Fed Members,

Elsewhere in this issue of Cornstalk, you will see a notice advising of the reduction in our printing schedule. Starting with the April 2015 issue, Cornstalk will become a bi-monthly publication, reducing from 11 issues per annum to 6. This decision has not been taken lightly, but has been the subject of extensive debate and was confirmed at the last AGM.

There are many reasons for this decision, among them the dramatic changes in com-munication media that have occurred over the past several years. Most of you now receive Folkmail weekly via email, bringing you bang up to date with folk events throughout NSW and beyond. If you are not receiving Folkmail, I encourage you to con-tact our Membership Secretary Wayne Richmond ([email protected]) and prepare to be amazed.

The website jam.org.au was established some time ago as the “do-it-yourself site for NSW folkies” and remains available to all members to post news of upcoming events, write reviews, seek musicians and generally communicate with the folk world. Add to this the Folk Fed’s Facebook page and we have a wealth of information sources available to Folk Fed members, not forgetting the many other sources of information that the net provides.

The cost of producing Cornstalk – both financially and in volunteer hours – is considerable. The search for articles to fill a monthly publication is unrelenting. The cost of postage and printing is increasing and our volunteers are feeling the pressure - something had to give.

We hope that reducing the frequency of Cornstalk will not greatly inconvenience our members, in view of so much alternative information available electronically. If you feel that you are unduly inconvenienced by this decision – and particularly if you do not have access to the Internet – please let us know. Over the coming months, we will provide details on how you can make effective use of our Facebook page, website & other media.

Once again I would like to pay tribute to our long suffering editor Coral Vorbach, to Wayne Richmond, Julie Bishop, wrap team Jim & Dallas Baxter and the other unsung heroes who work so hard to bring the folk news to your door. These people deserve a break! In reducing the frequency of Cornstalk, we hope to make their lives just that little bit easier.

Happy New Year to all Folk Fed members & friends. My New Year’s Resolution is to extend my folkie horizons by visiting as many folk clubs & festivals as possible. I hope to meet you in my travels.

Pam Davis

Cobargo Folk Festival 2015 UpdateAt this year's festival there will be a record number of CD launches, as well as the presentation of new material by Mar-tyn Wyndham-Read, Ken Nicol and Michael Menager.

First off, Fiona Boyes will launch her new album ‘Box & Dice’. The album takes its name from the guitar featured on the cover: a six string cigar box guitar with dice volume and tone knobs. The recording is a stripped back collection of new songs featuring slide guitar, inspired largely by new instruments that Fiona has picked up over the past year or so.

Malumba will be launching their new album Step Beyond. Featuring soulful melodies and intricate harmonies, with hints of Celtic, reggae, Klezmer and gypsy jazz flavours, Malumba’s fifth album is their best yet.

For your listening and dancing pleasure, Allez-gatorz will present a selection of new originals and some old time favourite, featuring the raw sounds of the Cajun One Row Accordion a la Boozoo Chavis and Rosie Ledet right up to the forefront of Modern Zydeco.

And Den Hanrahan and the Rum Runners will launch a new set of original country rock tunes.

We also anticipate new material from many other performers, from Archie Roach to Kate Burke and Ruth Hazelton who have just, or will soon, be releasing new CD’s. So expect lots of new music to fill the air at Cobargo with a plethora of new music and stories.

Participatory WorkshopsFolk festivals are not just about watching big-named per-formers on stage, but also about getting involved, joining a workshop or a session. Most folk performers are only too happy to pass on their knowledge and experience, so why not bring along your instrument(s) and/or voice and join in. There will be opportunity to participate in over a dozen work-shops on a variety of instruments, singing and songwriting which will be conducted by experienced tutors.

Beginners are usually catered for. For example, learn to play the humble spoons with one of the best spoon players around, Chris Aronsten - all you need is a sense of rhythm and a sense of fun. Similarly, there will be a beginner’s ukelele workshop. Guitarists can learn how to play bluegrass style or slide guitar. Denis Mackay will be continuing his popular autoharp workshops and will have a number of spare instru-

ments so you can try and see if this is for you. Nick Charles will be showing songwriters how to take a melodic approach to the craft, while Graeme Dodsworth will be looking at vari-ous ways to accompany folk songs. For fiddle players with at least a basic grasp of the instrument, Bob McInnes will be sharing secrets of various fiddle styles.

If you are daunted by the fast and furious reels played in many sessions, you are invited to come to a workshop with members of Springtide, where “pretty tunes” of a more gentle pace will be taught. The musicians of Black Joak will be passing on tips as to how to play for live dancing, with the opportunity to join them when they accompany the Morris Dance display. Chabby Bird will be teaching Gypsy style music and improvisation techniques. No Such Thing will be teaching a whole lot of tunes with unusual titles. All these workshops are open to players of any instrument.

Singers can learn how to create Bluegrass harmonies with members of Coolgrass, and anyone who loves to sing is wel-come to join the Festival Choir, under the tutorship of well known community choir leader, Dan Scollay.

Lovers of the spoken word are not forgotten either with Vic Jefferies passing on tips and techniques of performance poetry.

In addition, there will be a “Squeezers Circle”, hosted by Steve Wilson, where players of any bellowed instrument (eg concertinas, accordions, melodeons, etc) can take it in turns to show their instrument and share a tune. Similarly, there will be a “Songwriters Circle”, hosted by Canadian singer-songwriter Scott Cook, where budding singer-songwriters can try out their songs and maybe pick up some useful tips.

There will also be lots of dance workshops as well, but more on those later.

Martyn Wyndham-Read Plus Claire Doherty At The DogEnglish by birth, Martyn first developed his great interest in folksongs of the outback when he went to Australia in the early 1960's. There, while working on the South Australian sheep station "Emu Springs", he gained first hand experience of life as a bush worker and at the same time fell in love with Australia and it's music.

During his sub-sequent travels he spent much of his time seeking out and learning old songs directly from drovers, cane cutters and other bush workers. As the folk song revival gathered pace in Australia, Martyn found himself singing these songs to au-diences all across the Australian continent and after seven years down under, he returned to England where he performed these songs to an appreciative British audi-ence. Concert tours spreading his style of music to the far corners of the world have been the norm since then. Martyn has been involved in the folk scene for over 40 years and has released more than 30 albums, many considered classics of their genre. One of the most engaging performers you're ever likely to see, his exceptionally intimate performance combines songs, humorous bush poetry recitations, stories and anecdotes of outback life and comments on Australian history and culture.

Support Claire DohertyClaire fell for the violin after watching a segment on Sesame Street showing the creation of an instrument. After pestering her parents, as only a four year old can, they agreed to allow her to learn. All in spite of the prospect of tortured eardrums for years to come. But the gamble paid off. Young Claire took to the violin and also to the challenge of playing folk music, especially traditional Australian tunes.

Today, at 13, Claire has become a familiar face at many folk music gatherings. Whether busking, performing a blackboard gig, playing with the Bush Music Club or just sitting in at a session, Claire has continued to hone her skills, expand her repertoire and catch the ear of many a seasoned folkie. Add to this a peppering of Australian Bush poetry and Claire is testimony that Australian Bush traditions still have a future in our young

folk newsReclaim Your Voice!'In early 2014, Andy Busuttil of Blue Mountain Sound began to despair of the direction in which the current government’s policies towards asylum seekers were heading. Rather than give in to this despair, he set up a Facebook page for people, especially fellow mu-sicians, who felt the same and wanted to do something about it.

From this action grew a compilation CD of original songs aimed at reclaim-ing our voices to protest against Aus-tralia’s shameful treatment of people lawfully seeking asylum from war and oppression. The CD was launched in July 2014 at a sell-out gig in Sydney, raising more than $7000 to support the work of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. The next stage of this project is

to launch the CD in other places, sing the songs, inspire other people to action & keep the support funds flowing in.

At this Blue Mountains launch, many of the artists from the CD will perform, including the fabulous Kavisha Maz-zella up from Melbourne; Peter Miller-Robinson, Christina Mimmocchi, Mark Lucas, Spike Flynn, Andrew Lambkin and Ben Iota from Sydney; and the Blue Mountains’ own Andy Busuttil, Christine Wheeler, Ben Scott and Tony Eardley. Francesca Sidoti will perform Celine Yap’s beautiful song, Be Brave, while Sydney choir Perfect 5th will sing Shortis and Simpson’s Detainee. The artists will be supported by a band including Bertie McMahon (bass), Tim Watts (bass), John Napier (cello), Dux Newton (electric guitar) and Hayden Chee (drums).

Speakers from the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre and the Blue Moun-tains Refugee Support Group will talk about the current situation and the work of their groups. All proceeds from the night will go to them, and refreshments (tea, coffee, cakes etc.) will also be available for purchase. All performers (as well as sound engineer Guy Dickerson and stage manager Lynne Hudson) are donating their time. Thanks also to Springwood Presbyte-rian Church for free use of the hall.

Stop the Punishment of Asylum Seek-ers: Blue Mountains launch of fund-raising CD, on Saturday 21st February, 4pm, at Springwood Presbyterian Church Hall, Macquarie Rd, Spring-wood. All proceeds to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre and the Blue Mountains Refugee Support Group.

Tickets $25 (includes copy of CD), with children under 12 years free, available online at trybooking.com/FLHR or on the door.

The Loaded Dog'The Dog' turns 25 this year.

Way back in 1990 Carole Garland started the folk club at the Annandale Neighbourhood Centre.

We will be starting the year with an old favourite + a bright new performer. Martyn Wyndham-Read is returning again to the Dog, and will be supported by 13-year old Bush and Irish fiddler and reciter Claire Doherty who he met at the National in 2011 and has been mentoring ever since.

March will bring the first visit of northern UK singer Bob Fox and April brings WA's David Hyams who was forced to cancel last year due to a nasty lurgy.

The Birthday is booked - Carole (Gar-land/Fine) and the Shiny Bum singers will share the bill and a good time will be had.

Booking for the rest of the year is almost complete and the calendar will be published when available.

Port Macquarie Tango FestivalAbout Sociedad Para Los Niños. In 2002 a group of Tango friends in Brisbane agreed to hold an elegant Tango Ball in Bris-bane to express our gratitude for the gift of Tango to the world by supporting the children of Argentina in their hour of need, following the Argentine currency crisis. They organised the first milonga at the Queensland Irish Club in November 2002 and Milonga Para Los Niños ™ was born. At the same time Patio de Tango with A Little Buenos Aires agreed to run the milonga in Sydney.Sociedad Para Los Niños now holds an-nual events in Brisbane, Sydney and other Australian and international cities. It gen-erates other regular income from standing donations from Comme il Faut alfresco milonga in Brisbane and at the Gold Coast, as well as the sale of merchandise. The annual milonga/ ball has been held in Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Auck-land New Zealand, Germany and Buenos Aires, Argentina, the home of Tango. Mi-longas are in the planning stages around Australia & internationally. The non-profit organisation, Sociedad Para Los Niños Inc., was formalised by incorporation in Queensland in 2003 in order to demonstrate to organisers and donors that they comply with rigid Aus-tralian Government controls for handling public funding. Its core value is to directly assist people who add value to the lives of disadvan-taged children in South America. With the help of committee members in Argentina and others, they have established a sup-ply chain to see that it happens without waste. To date, tools and goods have been distributed directly to foster homes and locally based individuals who are doing amazing things with minimal resources to improve the lives of children. They have provided basic essentials such as staple food, warm clothing and shoes, bedding, light bulbs, window glass as well as pro-viding cooking equipment, farm tools and gas reticulation for cooking and heating. One of Para Los Niños adopted partners was a privately run farm for street-kids to keep them off the streets and away from drugs and prostitution. Another two are foster homes that each house up to a dozen homeless and abused children. BMC Dance Workshop Report We closed 2014 with two very enjoy-able workshops.

Our Christmas Party was held on 8th December when the Bush Music Club's Concert Party played for 37 dancers, a great turn out. Our thanks to the Con-cert Party for their musical talent and to those who presented the delicious supper. We enjoyed a wide range of dances from couples dances (St Ber-nards Waltz and the Maxina) through to Scottish (Galloping Carousel and Janet's Delight), Contra (Love and Kisses) and trad. & modern Australian (Golden Wat-tle Waltz Quadrille, Cambewarra Waltz, At Skaters' Pond and the Barn Dance).

Our last workshop of 2014 was our traditional request night, where the dancers request the program. We danced Cascades, Maxina, Western Austral-ian Pride of Erin, Swing Waltz, Circle Waltz, Love 'em and Leave 'em, White-horse Waltz and Virginia Reel.

Come and join us in February where we will start another year with some special evenings learning some old and new fa-vourites. In March we will look at dance tempo and movement timing and also practise the dances on the Central Coast April dance program. And a reminder - there will be no workshop on Monday 6th April (Easter Monday)

Alex Legg - 1952-2014 After a sudden and intense battle with cancer, Alex Legg, age 62, passed away on the 3rd December 2014, leaving behind his son Angus, his sisters and brothers, and nieces and nephews in Scotland, and the swathe of musicians he inspired. Alex led a rich and interesting musical life since writing his first song at twelve years of age. By the time he was fourteen he was playing bass in Scottish dance band, Dave Barron’s Baronettes. After playing bass in a number of Aberdeen bands, including Hedgehog Pie, he moved to London in 1974 and spent the following thirty years songwriting and gigging, finally moving to Melbourne, Australia with his then wife Jenny and son Angus, and two contact numbers in his phone book. From such tenuous beginnings, Alex went on to forge a successful musical career in Melbourne, especially in the Dandenong Ranges where he ran Kelly’s Sessions, at Kelly’s Bar and Grill, Olinda, easily the greatest open mic in the world and a training ground for many emerging artists. Alex nurtured the talent and gave freely his own hard won wisdom, encouraging singer songwriters to work up a three-hour set and get themselves out there. He would even help to book them gigs. Alex also hosted a monthly Blues and Roots night at Burrinja Arts Centre café, featuring Nick Charles, Fiona Boyes, Andy Cowan, Phil Manning, Kavisha Mazzella, and Lloyd Spiegel and many more top Blues artists, all of whom held Alex in the highest regard.

Alex was a master songwriter and consummate performer, his stomping grooves and rich vocals the perfect delivery for songs of passion, loss and social justice. Alex will be remembered for his award-winning songs like Too Many Children and Heaven Help Me; songs he considered simple and funny like Leather and Lace and Forget It (another award winner); and songs like May All Your Friends Be Artists which he wrote for his son Angus, songs that strike at the hearts of many.

At the time of his passing he was working on an album featuring the great Albert Lee on guitar. The album was originally to be titled Cupid’s Graveyard after one of the tracks. Towards the end of his life Alex decided to re-name the album Leggacy. I think it was a wise choice. Alex had a huge heart and a giving & generous nature and he has left us with a song catalogue second to none. His songs are his legacy.

Here is Heaven Help Me, a song that Joe Cocker passed over and Johnny Neel recorded in 2004 can be found on YouTube.

Raglan Road 28 Year Reunion Concert

Raglan Road was formed in 1974 and last played in 1987. By the early '80s it was clearly established as one of Australia’s leading folk/acoustic bands. Raglan Road then toured with the Dubliners, Christy Moore, the Fureys, Stockton’s Wing, Mary Black, Paddy Reilly and many other international performers. At their own long resident gigs in Sydney they hosted Ralph McTell, Eric Bogle, Doug Ashdown and Bernard Bolan as well as, in the folk tradition, many aspiring young performers. Thirty years ago, Sydney folk music was at its peak, and, at its peak, was Raglan Road.

Their music is folk, but in the widest sense – Irish, English, Scots, Australian for sure, but also plenty of their own origi-nals, Dylan, Ochs and many others. The five part harmonies and acappella, the powerful vocals and the gifted, diverse instrumentation must be heard to be believed!

In its 13 years Raglan Road released two singles and three LPs. It performed at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, Sydney Opera House, Sydney Town Hall, State Theatre and the Port Fairy Folk Festival. Always hard working and in demand, the band consistently played twice weekly and often more in Sydney pubs and clubs with longer than two year residencies at the Rose, Shamrock & Thistle (the '3 Weeds'), the White Horse Hotel Surry Hills & the Sydney Gaelic Club.

Band members Anna Brown (vocals, flute, whistle, saxo-phone, percussion), Martin Doherty (vocals, 6 string guitar, bodhran), Jim Donnelly (vocals, harmonica, 12 string guitar), Tony Hystek (vocals, upright and electric base, cello) and Kirsty McCallum (vocals, violin, keyboard) are looking forward to playing together again and to meeting up with old friends for this once only reunion.

The concert will be on Saturday 11th July, at the Petersham Bowlo.

Tickets on sale from 7th January. Early bird (till 31st March) $21, then $25. Contact Peter Russell, Raglan Road Manager (pulled out of retirement!), [email protected].

10th Australian Folklore ConferenceThe AFN’s 10th annual conference will be held at the National Library of Australia on April 2 (just avoiding April Fool’s Day). A full program will be issued closer to the event but we can tell you that confirmed presentations include:

•Family folk music traditions •Popular music of the 1940s/50s •An Australian look at the 2014 American Folklore Society conference Contemporary Light Horse songs •The biography of John Meredith •Old Time and Bluegrass in Australia •Local dance history •Australian fairy tales

The lunchtime concert will feature blues/jug/skiffle pioneers Frank Povah and Chris Cruise in song and conversation with Rob Willis, to celebrate the Library’s 21st year of bringing traditional musicians to the National Folk Festival.

As usual, there will be opportunities to purchase books, exchange information & put faces to names of attenders from around the country, many in town for the National Folk Festival.

As always, unmissable!

Attendance is free but you do need to register as places are limited. Please email registrations to [email protected]

He is a founda-tion member of the Roaring Forties, a traditional style singer, usually unaccompanied, player of several different stringed instruments and an instrument maker.

Robin has written many individual songs over the years. He worked for many years in

Duke's place, named after our honoured early member Harold 'Duke' Tritton (1886-1965), is the place to go once a month for a great night of Australian songs in concert and session. Duke was a powerful singer who supplied BMC with many songs he had learnt in his younger days while working as a shearer and at other bush jobs. He was also a songwriter and poet giving us songs that have entered the tradition such as Sandy Hollow Line and Shearing in the Bar.

Tradewinds Folk Bound For NewcastleYou hear so much about cuts to services these days that it is refreshing to hear, that the Arts Community in the city, is about to gain a new live acoustic music venue, on a monthly basis.

In the New Year a group of Newcastle residents is about to launch Tradewinds Folk Events in The Dungeon at Adam-stown, already a successful music venue. The addition of Tradewinds Folk will bring fresh interest for those who like their music ‘lightly spiced’ “After all”, said Carole Garland, who will run the bookings side of things, “Our tastes have expanded along with each wave of new arrivals from over-seas. We try their music along with their foods. We also go abroad more often, and listen to new sounds on YouTube and the like. We have a strong musical heritage of our own in Newcastle, and wish to celebrate that too.

Folk music, in the traditional sense has also been the founda-tion of other music. Often this input is what makes the other stuff thrive. Who could imagine Jazz or Blues without their old style content”.

Carole, who has been bookings officer for the local folk club for several years, is not alone. Much respected performers, Peter Allsop and Nicola Ross, who form ‘Dr’s Wife’ and Mi-chael Fine who helps run the folk club in Woy Woy, and who is now part of ‘Garland-Fine’ will join in the venture starting in the New Year. And the name? “Tradewinds folk came to me because I love crossroad cities. These are often harbours, where ideas intersect and become vivid. Tradewinds Folk Events will be run on a not-for-profit basis, with no gimmicks at all, apart from the coffee and cake. So we are giving an in-troductory offer of free coffee and choice of cake, to the first two people to mention ‘Nobby’s Head’ on the Door.
