Introduction

Using hand phone while driving is adangerous act that poses a threat to otherroad users. It also creates a significant accident risks tothe user and to the other people on the roadThis unsafe act will normally distract thedrivers, impairs their control of the vehicleand reduces their awareness to the changesin road situations

Research Methodology

In researching this matter, ExperimentalMethodology is the suitable method to beusedReasons:

Experimental method can determine orpredict what may occurIt also able to test hypothesis by reading validconclusions about relationship betweendependent and independent variables

Types of Variables

What is a variable?A variable is an object, event, idea, feeling, time period, or any other type of category thatis trying to be measured

Dependent Variable (DV)

A dependent variable is a variable that dependson other factors.DVs are influenced by the changes in one ormore independent variables (IV)In this discussion, the DV are:

Drivers DistractionDrivers Concentration/Focus

Dependent Variable (DV)

Basically, there are 2 types of distraction will occurred:Physical distraction:

Drivers must remove one hand from the steering wheel to hold andoperate the phoneBesides, the driver must continue to simultaneously operate thevehicle (steer, change gear, use indicators) with only one handDrivers must also take their eyes off the road, at least momentarily,to pick up and put down the phone and to dial numbers

Cognitive distraction:The performance of both tasks is often worse than if they wereperformed separately, because attention has to be divided, orswitched, between the tasks and the tasks must compete for thesame cognitive processes

Independent Variable (IV)

An independent variable is a variable that standsalone and is not changed by the other variablesthat are trying to be measuredIn this discussion, the IV are:

Road condition (dry, wet, heavy traffic)Weather conditionDriving time (day or night)Size/weight of the hand phoneType of hand phone operation (SMS or making calls)

Control Variable (CV)

A controlled variable is an independent variablethat remain constant in any case studyBasically CV is an IV which may affect DV indifferent ways if not being controlledIn this discussion, the CV are:

Driver AgeDriver SexDriver Driving ExperienceCall duration (1 minute, 5 minutes or 30 minutes)

Research Planning

Based on our group discussion, the research planningare as steps below:

Step 1: Define problem and hypothesesDistraction caused by usage of hand phone while driving

Step 2: Specify the experimental planNumber of participant, procedures, equipment usage

Step 3: Conduct the studyLaboratory experiment, real condition experiment, simulations

Step 4: Analyze the dataStatistically analyzed the data obtained

Step 5: Draw conclusionsExposed the results/findings and give recommendation
