Marina Beach in Chennai, the second largest urbanbeach line in the world, had eight people reac-

hing a watery grave this year till April. Last year, the gure was 23persons, of which three bodies re-

main untraced. The missing bod-ies are suspected to have beentrapped in the wreckage of a shipthat has been lying in the sea bedfor over four decades now. Thisinvisible underwater demon isthe skeletal remains of Greek lin-er Stamatis that ran aground off the then Madras Port in 1966 fol-lowing a cyclone.

According to red-duster.co.uk,the website owned by The Mer-chant Navy Association of U.K., it was on November 3, 1966 whenthe ship weighing 7219grt (grossregister tonnage) with a length of 422ft 10in, a height of 57ft andservice speed of 11 knots, onvoyage to Calcutta from Madras,

was caught in the heavy windsand got stuck in the sands in thesea. Some parts of the ship weredismantled and auctioned off, while the rest of the wreckage lay embedded in the sand as a deathtrap for swimmers in the watersbehind Anna Memorial.

An attempt in 1990 to retrievethe wreckage proved unsuccess-ful as the ship was too deeply em-bedded in the sea bed.

Despite warnings from police, beachgoers take a dip in therough waters of the Marina. Many people, mainly touristsfrom other states who come tothe beach for a dip, are unaware

of the ship wreck lying underwater. While there might be manreasons behind instances of people drowning in the Marina, thshipwreck is one of the primarreasons behind the bodies not be-ing found, says Chandrasekhahead constable at the AnnSquare police station und whose jurisdiction the be

stretch from Anna Memorial tKannagi Statue falls.Fourteen-year-old Vignesh Ku

mar of Perambur had gone to theMarina in 2004 with two frienand had taken a dip behind AnnMemorial. While his friends camback safe, Vignesh never rturned.

We were told that the currenmight have washed away his bodfar off or his body might habeen caught in the shipwrecksays Vimal Kumar, brother of thdeceased.

Fifteen years ago, a portion the ship was visible 3km from thshore but it later sank into the seaNow, the wreckage could be ju

300m from the shore. According to Mark Owen Fnandez, Secretary, NeelankaraBeach Forum, the wreckage coulhave a vacuum into which swimmers might be sucked. It woulbe impractical to remove th wreckage as its been buried fmany years and it could be an expensive process.

Therefore, the best option is tspread awareness among beachgoers about the danger, he saidMark also added that as a preventive measure the water just beforthe wreckage could be cordoneoff with a net so that swimmedont go further.

Mothers may be lucky to be unwrap-ping a box of anything this week, asthe sluggish economy turns gifts, and even greeting cards, into treatsthis Mothers Day, according to an Austra-lian retail research rm.

Mothers Day, celebrated on May 10 is atraditional boon for a range of retail indus-tries from jewellery to restaurants as peopletry and pamper their mums once a year.

But business information analysts IBIS-World predict a 3.9 percent drop in overallretail spending this year for Mothers Day asrecession-hit Australians tighten their belts.

A bought or home-made card andbreakfast in bed will be the order of the day for many Australian families, so Mum mighthave to wait until next year to unwrap thatsomething special, IBISWorld GeneralManager Robert Bryant said in a statement.

He said that although greeting card salesare expected to rise 1.2 percent, growth willbe slower this year as some Australians optfor e-cards and the Internet to send their wishes.

Jewellery sales and gift certicates for de-partment stores, spas and beauty servicesare expected to take the biggest hit, downby nearly 5 percent and 7 percentrespectively.

And fewer mums will be getting owersthis year, wilting an industry already suf-fering from lower disposable incomes on aday that usually contributes nearly a quar-ter of annual revenue.

Chocolate and clothing sales are also de-clining and more people are choosing cheaper brands or practical, low-cost itemsover luxury, Bryant said.

Political leviathans may shrug her off as just an-other irrelevant entrant inIndias biggest political

carnival, but 32-year-old psy-chologist-turned-entrepreneurMaya Ramachandran, is all setto test her electoral fortunesfrom the Sriperumbudur Lok Sabha seat, which was createdafter the delimitation exercise.

Contesting on a HumanistParty of India (HP) ticket, Mayais pitted against Union Shipping Minister T.R.Baalu (DMK) and AIADMK alliance-backed PMK candidate A.K.Moorthy.

The Humanist Party was bornon 10 December 1984 (Interna-tional Human Rights Day) andis active, in different stages of formation/development, across150 countries where the Hu-manist Movement is present.

Im not here to attract peo-ple for votes, I am here to getpeople involve from all walks of life, so that they can questionthe government when their ba-sic needs are not met, says theDirector of Genlite Engineering Private Limited. Mayas fatherand sister are also actively in-volved in the companys affairs, besides there are people tomanage Genlites operationsand Maya feels her practicalpresence is not required every time, as she is busy in hitting the campaign trail.

She is also undeterred on tak-ing on the seasoned politicoscontesting against her. I dont

think tackling my opponents isa big problem, as I have peo-ples support.

The gold medal-winning psy-chologist welcomes indepen-dent candidates ghting thepolls. Im glad that lots of peo-ple are coming forward to takeup this responsible job of run-ning the government. I am only concerned that its a very scat-tered effort, all the indepen-dents should join together andreach a consensus on elding asingle representative, so thatbetter results could beachieved.

The mobilization secretary of HP (Tamil Nadu) rubbishescharges that independent can-didates contest only to getmedia attention. They (inde-pendent candidates) are thepeople who are fed up with theexisting system and they havealready proved their mettle intheir respective elds. By sup-porting such eligible candi-dates, we can make use of theirskills in the administrative proc-ess at the government-level.

The exuberant entrepreneuralso believes she has got thepotential to stand out from thecrowd and excel in her tasks, unlike the ever-promising-nev-er-committing type of politic-ians. If elected, she promises ahumanist approach, which willstrive towards fullling the ba-sic needs of people and alsoensuring democratic gover-nance by spreading the ideals of non-violence.

The aspiring MP also took aswipe at the politicos for using

Womens Reservation Bill as anelection gimmick. Womendoesnt need reservations toprove their abilities, it only un-dermines the capacities of thefairer sex. Politicians use thisissue as a tool during electionsto hoodwink people and divertthem from core problems. If atall our netas are seriously con-sidering providing reservation,it should be 50%, because half of the population are womenand there should be some senseof equality, as HP believes inequality of humans irrespectiveof their caste, creed, professionetc.

She also admitted that due tocertain restrictions in the socie-ty, many women are not willing to take the political plunge andlack of education is also a hin-

drance to their upliftment.Maya also insisted that bothmen and women should equally participate in the representativegovernment, so that a balanceddecision could be taken at alllevels.

Maya surely has the edge overher rivals when it comes to In-ternet campaign. The website www.mayaramachandran.inhas been launched to garner thesupport of young voters. Theportal designed by her cousin, who is a professional web de-signer is spearheading her on-line rallies to reach out to theeducated and tech-savvy youth. Whether the Gen-Next entre-preneur could upset the apple-cart of her opponents or willshe do a Maya-jaal in the polls will be known on May 16.

Gold medal-winning psychologist-turned-entrepreneur MayaRamachandran is another very interesting candidate in the electoral fray, contesting the polls fromSriperumbudur constituency

the World Twenty20 title in England.Left-arm seamer Singh, who last donned

Indian colours against England in November, was recalled for the team to England nextmonth after picking 12 wickets from sixgames in the second edition of IPLin SouthAfrica. Ojha, a left-arm spinner, is the sec-ond-most successful Indian bowler in the IPLafter his Deccan Chargers teammate Singh, with 10 wickets in six matches.

Singh was instrumental in Indias triumphin the inaugural T20 World Cup in SouthAfrica, picking 12 wickets, one less than lead-ing taker Umar Gul of Pakistan. tained nine members of the winning squad, leaving out seamers Ajit Agarkar, JoginderSharma and S. Sreesanth, along with RobinUthappa, Dinesh Karthick, and leg-spinnerPiyush Chawla.

National selectorskeep faithon the tried and tested for the T20World Cup

More or less the same squad has been retained. The Indian team is doing very well and the IPLhas also been a great hit and many all-rounders are performing well. With England hosting the

World Cup, the role of all-rounders will be important as in English conditions the ball will do a bit andIndia has many good all-rounders like Irfan Pathan and I think India has a good chance to retain the Cup.

When asked whether his character was inspired by any of the present day young politicians, the actor declines to divulge the details.

Rajniti paints the political picture of the country with a twist as director Jha hasblended the Mahabharata into the contemporary theme of the lm.

Rampal admits he was never interested in politics before the lm happened tohim.

Rajniti is a hard-hitting take on politics. Apart from the fact that it is a PrakashJha lm, its realism gripped me, he says, adding, It made me dig deeper andlearn more about politics to prepare for my role.

Jhas all-time favourite actor Ajay Devgan plays the role of modern day Karna, while Krishnas interesting character is being played by none other than NanaPatekar.

Rampal will share the silver screen with actors like Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Manoj Bajpai. The lm is expected to release in September this year. The global economic slowdown may have hit the industry hard but the actor

believes it would not affect entertainers like him.I think it is a great time for actors. Recession might hit but as an entertainer our

work is to treat the audience and do memorable roles.Rampal hopes to enjoy a successful year with a number of lms lined up for
