GeophysicalProspecting

Geophysics is an area of science thatdescribes earth media based on theirphysical properties. Specifically, explorationgeophysics has mainly been applied tolocate natural resources (hydrocarbon, natural gas, gas hydrate, mineral resourcesand ground water under the ground orseabed), to evaluate civil engineering sites(including detection of cavities under roadsurface), and to resolve environmentalproblems (e.g., monitoring carbon captureand storage sites), etc. Most of geophysical methods, such as gravity, magnetic, electrical, and seismic methods, are based on data acquisition, processing, and interpretation. Our studies focus on developing new data processing techniques such as modeling andinversion algorithms to present high-resolution subsurface images from field data. We havedeveloped various kinds of seismic modeling and inversion algorithms for oil and gasexploration. Recently, our research topics were extended to electrical resistivity andelectromagnetic methods including GPR. Our research projects are about developingseismic data processing and interpretation techniques for conventional and unconventionaloil and gas exploration, developing 3D magnetotelluric modeling and inversion techniques foranalysis of focal depth of earthquakes as a nuclear safety research program, evaluatinggeophysical techniques to locate cavities under road surface, etc.

Energy systems in the 21th century faceupward challenges to mitigate stresses ofhigh energy prices, climate changeconvention and new energy technologiesand industries looking for a better solution tomeet the goal of ‘sustainable development.’Energy, Environmental, and EngineeringEconomics field was established in 1987 toresearch on social and managerial aspects of the solution and to establish socially-optimalnational strategies for energy and environmental problems. Our field deals with variousissues in the following research areas: Analysis of energy markets and industries, international energy policies, valuation of environmental good and new technologies, andeconomic evaluation of engineering projects. Recent research topics include economicvaluation of CO2-reduction technologies, new energy technologies and water resourcetechnologies, analysis of economic and social effects of technology developments, valuationof recycling and environmentally-friendly goods, valuation of geological information, andinternational energy market analysis.

EnergyResourceProcessing

The raw material extracted from the earth is high impure and must be upgraded before theyare of use to society. The refining of material commodities involves a broad variety ofscience and technology, associated with the production, handling and separation of solidparticles. Particles systems are also critical to many of theprocesses and products of modern industry. Thus, themain research activities of this ground are focused onphysical concentration of valuable minerals from ore andparticle processing. Also, as means of conserving naturalresources and environment, our efforts have expanded todevelopment of recycling technologies. Major topics of ourfield are

1) Mineral processing and resources recycling- Separation and beneficiation of minerals- Recovery of valuable resources from municipal/industrial

waste- DEM(Discrete Element Method) and SPH(Smoothed Particle

Hydrodynamics)- comminution

2) Energy and environmental engineering- Clean coal technology and coal pretreatment technology- CO2-Foam EOR- Mineral carbonation of CO2 using industrial wastes- Reactive transport modeling of CO2 geological sequestration

EngineeringGeology andEnergy GIS

Main research interests of the lab are focused on environmental issues and naturalresources management from the perspective of GIS (Geographic Information Systems),engineering geology and remote sensing. GIS technology is an effective solution for solvingvarious engineering problems in both developed and developing environments. It is a vitaltool for prediction of spatial variation of ground properties, mine exploration, reclamation ofmining sites, geohazards prediction and the evaluation of renewable energy resources.Recent research topics include modern scientific approaches such as remote sensing andimage processing, combined with conventional site investigation techniques in the area ofengineering geology. Sophisticated visualization and analysis technologies are applied tocutting-edge researches including CCS (Carbon Capture & Storage) monitoring, polarexploration and smartphone application development.

EnvironmentalGeochemistryand ResourcesEnvironmentalEngineering

Major interest of our research group focuses on theenvironmental issues related to resources developmentprocesses and the recovery of useful resources whilesolving the environmental problems. One of the study topics is the investigation and treatmentof the environmental contamination caused by naturalresource development activities. Researches about thesources of the contaminants, their chemical forms, andpathways into surficial environment including soil, water, sediment and plants are carried out in the laboratory. Thisgeochemical study includes the development ofcontamination controlling processes in urban environment, and at the minerals and energy resources developmentsites. Our research group also concerns the recovery of usableresources within the contaminated environment treatmentprocesses. Especially, we are focusing on the reclaimingthe valuable mineral resources during produced watertreatment process after unconventional energy resourcedevelopments or wastewater treatment process in urbanwastewater treatment plants.

Petroleum and GasEngineering

The petroleum & natural gas engineering field in the department conducts teaching andresearches on the production of conventional and unconventional oil & gas resources. Wealso cover contaminants migration in porous media and subsurface CO2 storage. Sincesubsurface has a lot of uncertainties due to limited information, we study and tackle issuesrelated subsurface resources and environmental protection. The research areas includedrilling simulation, well control and drilling problems, deep-sea drilling, reservoircharacterization, and production optimization for both conventional and unconventionalhydrocarbon resources. Numerical modeling and Geostatistics are key tools for solvingrelated tasks. Lab members are well-trained and familiar with typical commercial softwaressuch as Petrel, Eclipse, Pipesim, OLGA, etc.Recent project experiences in the Lab are: “Development of reservoir characterization andmonitoring systems for an optimal production from unconventional reservoirs” mainly for oilsands; “Fast evaluation of well placement in heterogeneous reservoir using machinelearning” for production optimization; “A learning-based data-driven forecast approach” forpredicting reservoir future performnces; “Development of hydraulic fracturing evaluationtechnology” for shale gas; “Development of modeling technologies of well control” for water-based and oil-based muds with directional and horizontal well trajectories; “Drillingoptimization using drilling time and cost analyses” using real field operation data; “Torqueand drag analysis program for the validation of BHA” for analysis and design of directionalwells; “Demonstration-scale offshore CO2 storage project in Pohang Basin, Korea” for CO2

Rock Mechanicsand RockEngineering

The Rock Mechanics & Rock Engineeringfield carry out the researches on thephysical, mechanical and hydraulicproperties of rock and rock mass intheoretical, numerical and experimentalaspects. Through conventional and creativelaboratory testing, rock strength, deformationbehavior and fracturing process in rock withdifferent boundary conditions are examined.Based on the fundamental researches, engineering applications in terms of the design and analysis of the rock structures such astunnels, underground caverns, and rock slopes as well as blasting and excavation in rockmass are carried out. Practical concerns in in-situ stress measurements, tunnel supports, consideration of anisotropy of rock, and determination of input parameters for the design of arock structure are also studied. Energy and geo-environmental applications such as CO2

geosequestration, geothermal energy and deep geological repository for nuclear waste arealso important area of rock mechanics which requirethorough understanding of coupled thermal, mechanicaland hydraulic processes within geological media. Recentresearches include characterization of discontinuous rockmass, discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA), blastingsimulation of a structure, TBM disc cutter design for thefast tunnel excavation, scaled model test of a tunnel in thevarious anisotropic rock conditions, and shear slippotential of deep geological repository for nuclear wastes.
