ERASERHEADS

BIOGRAPHY AND DISCOGRAPHY

Page 2: Eraserheads

•Often described as the the Beatles of the Philippines, the Eraserheads were more than just the country's seminal rock band of the 1990s. For more than a decade until their surprise disbandment in April 2002, the iconic quartet of Ely Buendia, Raimund Marasigan, Buddy Zabala and Marcus Adoro composed the collective soundtrack of an entire nation, hitting a nerve in every filipino youth.

• They got there band name from an american director david lynch’s 1977 horror film, “eraserhead”.

• The four band members met in 1989, during their college days at the university of the philippines in manila.

• They recorded a cheap, lo-tech demo tape in 1991 and shopped in around record labels and radio stations, hoping to have their songs reach public awareness. They were, unfortunately, rejected at every turn. A professor-friend from their school helped record a better version of the demo which was named, "pop-u!" In defense to all those who've turned them down. As this demo went around, it found its way to BMG records (pilipinas) a year after it was made and the rest, as they say it, is history.

•When bmg finally released their debut album ultraelectromagneticpop! In 1993, it was a smash hit - and eraserheads mania was born.

• In the span of their 13-year career, raserheads produced nine groundbreaking albums that sold more than a million copies, turned out more than 24 chart-topping singles and won every industry award imaginable - including the MTV asia viewer's choice award in 1997, making them the first filipinos to receive the coveted moon man trophy.

GOING INTERNATIONAL• 1997 – BMG Sentosa Pop Festival Singapore (march), U.S. Tours (may), receive the coveted "moonman" for

winning the 1997 MTV Asia Viewer's Choice Award; making the Eraserheads, the first ever philippine artists to win such award (sept).

• 1998 - represented the philippines at the annual “Asia Live Dream '98" for NHK broadcasting in Tokyo, Japan (february). Embarked on another U.S. Tour, taking them from Oakland to Los Angeles and to New York (may). He release of “Aloha Milkyway" in the entire asian region and finally in the Philippines two months later. The album contains chart-topping songs that have been re-mastered and 5 new songs (august).

• 1999 - did sold-out shows in Hong Kong, Sydney and Dubai. Their latest album, “Natin99" was released in may.

• 2000 - did another tour of America aptly dubbed, "the Pop Machine Tour - USA2000", taking them from New York to Chicago & to California.

• 2001 - after almost 2 years, the much-awaited studio album, “Carbon Stereoxide" is released in march 2001 featuring the tracks, “Maskara", “Playground" and “Hula."

• "The reasons are simple: no other band has made an impression and impact as big as [they have] on the [filipino] music scene," says Eric Perpetua, the station manager of the manila-based FM radio station jam 88.3, who produced the band's 2005 tribute album.

• "No other band has captured every colour - from a to d - in the demographic rainbow. No other band is as witty, cheeky, spunky and as filipino when it comes to lyrics. No one comes close to the Eraserheads, then and now.“

• "From chasing an object of desire in Ligaya, to the bittersweet side of romance in pare ko, to the melancholy of losing a loved one in ang Huling El Bimbo, their songs transcend time," says the music writer Severino Soriano. "For every filipino who came of age in the 1990s, they symbolised our hunger to be heard. We could relate to their music. Their lyrics stirred our emotions. They were fun, sharp, somewhat cynical and very real."

THE BREAK UP

•After weeks of speculation, it was confirmed that the main songwriter and lead singer, Ely Buendia, had left the band in mid-march 2002 for "reasons unknown". However, in subsequent interviews, Buendia pointed to business matters as the cause of the band's break-up.
