Equivalent FormulasFinding equivalent forms of formulas and
equations
Consider This….
A = p + pr
Which gives the amount A (in dollars) after one year in a bank account that started with p dollars and which has an annual yield of r.
A = p + pr
Solve this formula p
P = A
1 + r
A = p + pr
Solve this formula for r
R = A - p
P
Equivalent Formulas (Big Idea)If a formula gives a first variable in terms of a second variable, it may be possible to transform the formula to give the second variable in terms of the first….
(did that make sense to anyone other than a mathematician?!)
Let’s take a practical look at this….
Two different temperature scales are in common use throughout the world
The scale for the metric system is called the Celsius Scale.
The other scale in use is the Fahrenheit Scale.
In the Fahrenheit Scale, which is now used only in the United States and a few other countries, water’s freezing and boiling points are 32* and 212*
How do we interpret the numbers then??
Since the Fahrenheit Scale is not commonly used outside of the U.S., people have to change the Celsius temperature from their forecast into Fahrenheit using the following formula….
F = 1.8C + 32
F = 9/5C + 32
Solve for C
Let’s Put You To The Test!!
A person with head circumference of 23.5 inches wears a size 7.5 baseball cap.
Verify: C = 23.5 and S = 7.5
S = C – 1 / 3
SOLVE for the given variable
S = 180n – 360 for n
F = m • a for a
