The St Peter’s Equestrian Academy is a professionally run training programme, offering students the opportunity to achieve excellence in their chosen equestrian discipline.
The versatility of the programme enables students to choose options which best suit their needs, providing them with access to top quality coaching and facilities. Success is proven, with many students achieving first-class performances in their specialist fields.
Just as importantly, the programme will endeavour to develop the students’ character through the core principals of dedication, goal setting, commitment, self-belief, tenacity, determination, courtesy and sportsmanship. Students should not only leave the programme as better riders, but more balanced and better prepared human beings “for life”.
The on-site Equestrian Programme will operate either as a summer programme (Terms 1 and 4) or a full programme (Terms 1, 2, and 4).
Day and boarding students may participate in this programme and, providing they meet the criteria, students keeping their horses off-site may also join.
Parenga Pony Club is based at St Peter’s. Riders are encouraged to participate in all the associated activities, and events.

The School’s Commitment The Student’s Commitment
5
St Peter’s Equestrian students who meet the criteria will be accepted into the Equestrian Academy. As well as meeting the high performance benchmarks, students must also demonstrate commitment and loyalty to the School and the Equestrian Programme.
• Students will focus on preparing their own horse in their selected discipline.
• Specialised coaches will help the students improve their riding skills
• Riders are required to be disciplined in their approach and follow instructions given by the staff, so that the programme and facilities may be enjoyed by all.
• If the guidelines in this document are not met, then the student will not be able to continue in the Equestrian Programme.
A Rising Stars squad will also be named, comprising students who show potential to reach high levels of performance and leadership.

Students selecting this option must either:
• Provide proof that they are a member of a pony club and that they are attending rallies on a regular basis; or
• Provide a diary of their regular coaching sessions (minimum of 8 lessons required per term). Diaries should be handed in at the end of each riding term; or
• Provide results of their competition programme.
Failure to adhere to the above may see the student withdrawn from the Equestrian Programme.
Off-site Equestrian Students
Off-site students should attend scheduled meetings and may be invited to attend any specialist coaching clinics.
Personal Coaching
Students wishing to receive extra training from a personal coach, using the School facilities, should consult with the Director of Equestrian.
7
Safety is of paramount importance in the Equestrian Programme.
The rules below must be followed at all times:
1. When riding, students must wear a well-fitted and safety-approved helmet that is securely fastened and appropriate footwear (i.e. non-lace up shoes or boots with well-defined heels and non-cleated soles).
2. Riders’ shoulders must be covered when riding. It is strongly recommended that riders wear a long sleeved top and an approved body protector when jumping.
3. Riders must only jump under the supervision of an approved trainer or other approved person.
4. Bareback riding is allowed only when horses or ponies are wearing a correctly fitted bridle.
5. Only students involved in the Equestrian Programme may enter the equestrian facilities or ride.
6. It is each student’s responsibility to ensure that all saddlery used is correctly fitted, safe and in good repair.
7. Insurance of horses and saddlery is the owner’s and/or rider’s responsibility.
Safety
8. Riders must be in groups of three or more when riding independently, or under adult supervision.
9. Students may not ride each other’s horses unless under the supervision of an approved trainer and with signed parental approval.
10. Horses showing unsafe or undesirable behaviour may be removed from the programme at the discretion of the Director of Equestrian.
Community Commitment
Each year the St Peter’s Equestrian Academy will support a worthy equestrian cause. During winter, fundraising will be run for this group. All students in the Equestrian Academy are required to assist and support this.
Equine Studies (Years 9 - 13)
Equine Studies, a non-riding unit-based programme of self-directed study can be taken as an optional subject throughout the year. If preferred, units can be studied with Equine E-learning, an on-line computer-based programme — extra costs apply.
See the Academic Options booklet for further details.
8
5. Parasite control is a critical aspect of correct pasture management. All horses boarding at St Peter’s must be drenched for internal parasites on arrival and thereafter as directed using a drench approved by the Director of Equestrian. This will be carried out regardless of previous drenching of the horse.
6. Students must not change their horse’s paddock without permission from the Director of Equestrian.
Equestrian activities on the farm can only take place with the co-operation and support of the St Peter’s Farm Manager.
It is crucial that the Farm Manager’s guidelines are followed. These guidelines may be extended as required, and all verbal requests from the Farm Manager must be adhered to.
Approval from the Director of Equestrian must be sought before any farm ride takes place.
1. All gates should be left as they are found. Ensure that closed gates are securely latched.
2. Riding will be restricted to suitable paddocks designated by the Director of Equestrian. Horses are banned from the school playing fields, areas alongside the dormitories and classrooms, tarsealed roads and any mown grass areas.
3. The cross-country course situated outside the training area is considered out of bounds unless the Farm Manager/Equestrian Staff advise otherwise.
4. Any breakages or damage to farm property should be reported as soon as possible to the Director of Equestrian. If a student has acted irresponsibly causing damage he/she will be charged for repairs or replacement.

School Teams
• Riders must be available for the Inter-Secondary Schools Dressage, Show Hunter, Show Jumping or Horse Trials teams if requested. Trials may be held.
• Inter-school team events are outside the equestrian programme. Students and parents will be required to assist in the setting up and running of the events.
• Entry fees, transport costs and uniform hire will be charged to the student’s account.
General
Note
• Because of the conditions at school (large number of horses, limited shelter, fairly small paddocks) appropriate covers must be provided for fly and sun protection or warmth. It is not a suitable situation for uncovered horses.
• Work is mostly in the sand arena which is abrasive and may not be suitable for unshod horses.
• Generally speaking we are unable to provide single paddocks. Requests for these must be in writing, clearly stating the reason. If accepted, please bring your own reel, tape and standards.
• If your horse has any specific grazing requirements please ring to discuss these with the Equestrian Assistant. After one or two days, horses are generally placed in small grazing groups. Mares and geldings are kept separated.
Please clearly name all gear
1. Riding gear, safety helmet, boots, whip, spurs if used.
2. Waterproof riding raincoat.
3. Saddle, bridle, saddlecloths (2) and towels (2).
4. Halter, lead – that can be left out at the paddock gate.
5. Any auxiliary gear normally used by the horse (e.g. breastplate, martingale, boots).
6. Covers (water-proofed and suitable for the season) and an anti-sweat rug, if used.
7. Grooming kit, including hoof oil/dressing and fly repellent.
8. Saddle soap or leather dressing for cleaning tack.
9. Basic First Aid kit (Animalintex poultice, bandage, wound cream or powder).
10. Any specialised medicine needed by the horse (e.g. for sunburn, mudfever).
11. Worm paste (for 8-12 week drenching) or inform us if the School is to supply this.
12. Feed (as required), lidded feedbins (e.g. rubbish bins), bucket, feedbowl.
13. Storage bin or locker in which to keep all your gear.
14. Two pairs of strong rubber gloves (e.g. garden gloves) for mucking out.
Equipment and Supplies Required
11
As soon as possible – Send back the Equestrian Application form – places are limited. All applications will be acknowledged. If you don’t hear from us, please phone.
4 weeks before the start of term – Check all saddlery for soundness, repack if necessary, check horse’s teeth, arrange for vet/dentist to rasp if necessary. If your horse has been turned out, start his fitness programme by gentle riding for 30 minutes at slow speeds, 2–3 times per week.
3 weeks beforehand –Arrange shoeing if needed, repair and waterproof all covers and name clearly. Increase riding to 40 minutes, 3-4 times per week.
1 week beforehand –Wash grooming kit, assemble and name all gear required, organise feed and bins. Increase riding to 4-5 times per week. Remove all bot eggs from horse, check for ticks, lice etc. and treat. Purchase wormer or arrange for it to be provided by the School. Inform the Equestrian Assistant of your arrival time and find out your yard and paddock number.
Once you Arrive
• Drench your horse before it is turned out into a paddock.
• During the term, you must inform the Equestrian Assistant whenever your horse leaves and returns to St Peter’s.
• Over leave weekends it is possible for your horse to stay, but numbers must be known in advance as horses are checked for injuries and illness on a daily basis.
• A duty roster will be displayed on the notice board. All duties must be done after riding and before leaving at night, including riders on the own coach programme or those using personal coaches.
• Students must attend all instructional sessions and meetings.
• Absences must be notified.
• Horses must be checked every day (including weekends), by you or someone else if you have pre-arranged for them to do so.
Note• Do not bring horses to school that are suffering from coughs, colds or any infectious or
contagious disease (e.g. equine flu, ringworm, strangles).
• Competing horses are especially prone to infections so keep a close eye on them and other horses at the events you attend.
