A presidential election was held in Equatorial Guinea on April 24, 2016. Originally scheduled to be held in November, the election was moved up by Pres. Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo without specifying why. Obiang, who seized power in 1979 and has ruled ever since, was widely expected to win the election, as his brutal and repressive regime did not tolerate much dissent. Although the main opposition parties boycotted the vote, Obiang still faced six other candidates, whom he defeated handily, taking 94% of the vote. He was sworn in for his new term on May 20.
