EQF System composition The system is supplied in its protective suitcase, containing:

C. N° 1 Tablet, with already installed the EQF 12 sensors software (1.4 version or greater)

If the system is purchased without the Tablet, items C ,D and E will not be delivered.

Note: Tablet (item C), as for the above image, can change from time to time, depending from the

availability and we reserve ourselves the right to substitute it with devices that are in position to

run, in an adequate way, the supplied program.

Safety and Recycling The system is equipped with lithium - ion batteries.

• Lithium-ion batteries react violently when coming into contact with water (fully charged ones in particular)

• Do not store Li-Ion batteries near combustible material

• Do not overcharge Li-Ion batteries

• Do not short-circuit Li-Ion batteries

• Li-Ion batteries are sensitive to mechanical damage. After internal short-circuiting and contact with air they may be highly combustible (even 30 minutes after the actual short circuiting).

Rechargeable Lithium-ion batteries are inside the Tablet and inside the HUB.

Shipping Instructions The batteries contained in the EQF system comply with UN 3481, li-ion batteries contained in

equipment (UN-regulations governing the shipment of lithium batteries of 1st January 2009).

Please observe special restrictions in connection with li-ion batteries, especially regarding

airfreight and / or request appropriate information from your logistics partner before shipping.

Tablet Recycling The European Union WEEE (Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive is

intended to protect the quality of the environment and human health through the responsible use of

natural resources and the adoption of waste management strategies that focus on recycling and

reuse. This Directive requires producers of electrical and electronic products put on the market in

European Union (EU) member countries after August 2005 to mark such products with a crossed-

out wheeled bin with a black bar symbol. If the product’s battery or accumulator contains more than

the specified values of lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and/or cadmium (Cd) defined in the Battery

Directive (2006/66/EC), then the chemical symbols for lead (Pb), mercury (Hg) and/or cadmium

(Cd) will appear below the crossed out wheeled bin symbol on the battery.

In the European Union, these symbols indicate that when the last end user wishes to discard this

product, it must be sent to appropriate facilities for recovery and recycling. This Directive applies to

EU member countries only and does not apply to end users in other countries such as the United

States. Although the initial emphasis is in Europe, Toshiba is already working with design

engineers, suppliers, and other partners to determine appropriate worldwide product life cycle

planning and end-of-life strategies for our products. Please contact your local government for

Scope of the system The EQF system is a precision tool, studied to perform measurements on tensioned lift’s ropes,

allowing:

• Measurement of individual tensioning on each lift’s rope

• Evaluate car weight

• Evaluate counterweight weight

• Equalization of the tensioning of the ropes, with a graphical aid to the Technician

• Generation of a PDF report of the tensioning status on the ropes where the EQF

transducers have been installed.

• High measuring accuracy of rope tensioning: ± 5% FS

• Lightweight EQF sensors = around 0,3 Kg / sensor

• Battery powered measurement

• The measurement system is not intended to be used in high humidity environment

IMPORTANT NOTICE: EQF6 transducers are designed to be installed solely on plastic coated ropes

and are not to be installed on any type of metal ropes.

Avoid installing EQF6 transducer on metal ropes, since transducer will be permanently damaged.

EQF6 transducer – for 6,5 mm diameter ropes - is designed to measure tensioning loads up to 200

Kg. Transducer maximum quasi-static load (without permanent damage) is 250 Kg.

EQF8 transducer – for 8,1 mm diameter ropes - is designed to measure tensioning loads up to 300

Kg. Transducer maximum quasi-static load (without permanent damage) is 350 Kg.

Avoid any measurement using damaged transducers, especially if the surfaces of the EQF6 in

contact with the ropes are damaged, avoid any contact with the ropes.

Avoid performing measurements with additional elements installed between the ropes and the

transducer’s surface.

Lowest measurement is 65 Kg, although the sensor is capable to measure lower tensioning values,

with a decrease of the measuring quality.

Over 235 Kg (EQF 6,5) the software indicates the Overload status, as any increase of load may lead

to the possible damage of the transducer. EQF 8,1 will indicate Overload status if load is over 350

Kg.

System setup for measurement Always prepare the measurement system with a fresh recharge of the rechargeable batteries, to

have the longest working period.

EQF6 Transducer

EQF6 transducer is a lightweight digital low power unit that measures the tensioning load on the

rope where it is installed. The unit is Factory calibrated, considering the use of the unit with plastic

coated lift’s ropes with outer diameter from 6 to 6,5 mm or –as a separate model – for 8,1 mm

diameter (internal EQF firmware indicates rope type solely from firmware > 1.0).

Transducer is very thin, having a thickness of less than 15 mm (6,5 mm type).

Avoid any damage to the connection cables (signal or power supply) and to the electronic circuits

installed on the unit.

Transducer is designed to be installed by hand, but a standard DIN 3113 / ISO 733 size 12 tool (not

supplied) can be used to facilitate the installation on the tensioned rope, using it as an additional

lever.

Do not damage the transducer’s surfaces that come in contact with the ropes, in order to avoid

any possible damage to the ropes when the units are installed.

Assembling the system

While HUB is not powered, connect the parts, as described by the image.

In case of HUB low battery use the Tablet’s power supply (D) to power the HUB, by connecting it

to the provided USB A cable, and installing it in the service’s power socket available on the roof of

the lift.

Connect the Hub to the Tablet, using the provided USB cable.

It is possible to power the HUB also using a rechargeable power bank, for portable devices, like the

one used to recharge the smartphones, with 5 V output. Working time will depend from the

recharge state of the power bank and its capacity as mAh.

In our tests, with fully recharged HUB battery, the HUB plus 6 EQF sensors worked up to 8 hours.

Using less transducers will increase the autonomy on battery power.

WARNING on measurement system assembly

• NEVER connect one EQF transducer (micro USB B Male connector) directly to the Tablet

since this connection may damage both units.

• NEVER connect to the HUB ports dedicated to the EQF connection (numbered 1 to 6 or 1

to 12) the powered cable used to recharge the Tablet battery or a cable connected to a

Computer (micro USB B, coming from the Tablet recharger) since this can damage the HUB

and / or the USB power supply.

• AVOID to stress mechanically the connected micro USB B Male connector, when installed

in the HUB, to avoid to damage the plug. Do not apply side loads, rotations or excessive

pressure when inserting the connector in the plug.

• An uncontrolled EQF sensor fall can damage the connection to HUB electronics.

HUB Front Panel

Powered ON HUB with Yellow LED ON and USB communication cable. NOTE: HUB must be connected to a battery charger able to supply minimum 500 mA.

I/O: Protected inside the hole there is the power ON / OFF pushbutton, used to activate / de-activate the HUB. At power ON, HUB will scan the available ports for connection with EQF transducers, remaining in BUSY state until all available ports are verified. Consider around 60 seconds for a 6 transducers configuration (slightly more, is some sensor is not present).

PWR: Mini USB B port used to power the HUB during normal measurement operation, or to recharge the internal battery. The Tablet battery recharger can be used to power the HUB and/or to recharge its battery also while used for measurement. HUB is powered ON by inserting a powered USB cable.

USB: Mini USB B port used to connect the HUB to the tablet, or to a computer USB port.

Power LED: Indicates if the HUB is powered ON of OFF.

HUB Rear Panel

On this panel are available, depending from the HUB configuration, 6 (or 12) connection to the EQF transducers (Micro USB B connection). Connect to these ports SOLELY EQF transducers, in order to avoid damages. All EQF sensors connected to the HUB MUST be of the SAME TYPE. NEVER connect to the HUB ports dedicated to the EQF connection (numbered 1 to 6 or 1 to 12) the powered cable used to recharge the Tablet battery or a cable connected to a Computer (micro USB B, coming from the Tablet recharger) since this can damage

the HUB and / or the USB power supply.

Switching-on the system

We suggest to connect HUB and the needed EQF transducers while HUB is not yet powered ON

(few minutes before the installation on the ropes), in order to let the HUB recognize - at the boot -

the connected transducers.

Do not power on the HUB without any EQF transducer connected to it, since it will remain in

Standby mode. In this case, power off the unit and connect an EQF transducer to it and activate

again the program.

Each EQF unit has an individual ID reference indicated on transducer’s label.

Avoid connecting EQF sensors - with identical ID - to the same HUB, since this is a fault condition

that will avoid any correct measurement.

EQF transducers can be connected to the HUB in any desired order, with reference to the numbered

HUB ports. The software will always display their measurement, with reference to the individual

EQF own ID.

EQF transducers can be added to a powered HUB, requiring just a SCAN procedure

to activate their measurement on the Tensioning software.

When measurement activity is ended - with a battery powered HUB - by pressing the Exit

pushbutton on the software will shut down the connected HUB, in order to save battery power.

When Exit button is pressed with HUB powered by an external power source, the Led remains on

till the USB cable is in the Pwr port. By removing from the HUB the powered USB cable the unit is

then switched off. To activate a new measurement session in this latter case, User must power

on the EQF unit from the I/O button if battery powered, or must plug back a powered USB cable in

the Pwr port.

If no EQF transducer are detected and HUB powered by internal battery, it will power off after 5

minutes of inactivity.

In case software is not finding the HUB due to an incorrect connection sequence to the unit, close

the program and open it again when all the needed conditions for a good connection are achieved.

Where to install the EQF transducers

Distance from the rope fixation joint

Install the EQF transducers at least at 200 mm from the ropes fixation point, taking care to avoid

that the sensors touch each other. Chose the position and the height from the lift’s ceiling, in

order to facilitate the installation. Do not install them too high, with reference to your height, in

order to reduce as much as possible, the effort needed to install the sensors on the ropes.

Repetitive measurements on the same rope

If the measurement is performed several times, in order to have the best measurements possible,

chose installation points slightly different, from time to time, trying to install the EQF transducer

on a new area of the rope.

Where to install the transducer

It is suggested to install the transducers on the rope’s end opposite to the counterweight, if you

want to measure tensioning of the ropes and the weight of the cabin. Keep some distance from

the rope’s fixation point, so that the measure is not affected by mechanical interference.

How to install the EQF transducers on the ropes

1. Insert and center the rope between the topmost deflection pin (groove of PIN1) and the

sensing element (SENSOR);

2. Push the EQF transducer using the handle, toward the rope, so that it touches the sensor’s

surface, with the sensor’s tooth that keeps it in position;

3. Pushing the EQF transducer, toward the rope, apply a gentle rotation of the transducer;

4. When the rope is past the lower deflection pin (PIN2), align it with the groove of PIN2 and

release the force you applied to deflect the rope, so that the rope remains between PIN1,

the sensor and PIN2, as for the following image:

With the transducer already installed on the rope - before starting the measurements - it is suggested to use the handle in order to twist slightly the EQF (2/3 times) in the direction of Pin 1 and Pin 2, to optimize its mechanical connection with the rope.

How to uninstall the EQF transducers from the ropes

1. Using the handle, push the EQF transducer toward the rope so to free the portion of the

rope that is kept in position by the lower pin (PIN2)

2. When the rope is released from the PIN2, rotate up the EQF sensors, pivoting on contact

point between rope and PIN1, until the rope is free to exit from the PIN1 and the Sensor.

Optional lever to install or uninstall EQF sensor on tensioned ropes

To ease installation of the EQF sensor on a tensioned rope, it is possible to create an additional

lever using a “Size 12 DIN3113 tool” or equivalent tool (not supplied), to be placed on the top of

the EQF sensor so that the fork is engaged on the top screw (1).

When pulling down the tool, it will touch screw (2) reducing the force needed to install / uninstall

the EQF sensor from the tensioned rope.

EQF Transducer Identification

Each EQF transducer has on the back of the unit a label that indicates the Transducer’s Serial

Number and the ID reference. This ID reference is used to identify the measurement displayed by

the software running on the Tablet and has to be considered when installing the transducers on

the ropes, so that the EQF sensor with ID number 1 has to be installed on Rope 1, the EQF sensor

with ID number 2 on rope 2, and so on. On the back of the EQF sensor a label indicates

transducer’s characteristics, such as ID (to identify the sensor on the software), Full Scale (=FS) and

Rope Type (= EQF value that can be 6,5 or 8,1 rope

diameter).

IMPORTANT: avoid to install and use an EQF

sensor of the wrong type of rope. This may

damage the sensor (if used on bigger rope than

allowed) or cause wrong measurements (if installed

on ropes smaller than allowed by its configuration).

In case different types of EQF sensors are connected to the same HUB – being installed on the

same rope - all statistical indicators (Mean, Std.Dev%, etc) are not valid.

Software The EQF Tensioning measurement system is based on the installed EQF sensors, the HUB and a

tablet connected to the HUB, using the provided cables.

On the tablet a program is used to display the live measurements available from the EQF

transducers.

How to load the program

Press on the Icon named EQF12_MultiLang, to activate the program from the Desktop or from the

Program’s folder.

The measurement functions are available using four tabs that are on the top of the main panel.

It is possible to navigate between the available tabs, just selecting the desired tab with your finger.

Report and Tensioning Results Tabs must be selected when Measurement is OFF, while Time Chart

Tab can be selected also when Measurement is active.

Main Measurement tab

Description of the available control and indicator

This pushbutton is to be used after having connected and powered the measuring system, to activate the digital connection with the HUB. If connection is established with the HUB, a query is performed to get information from the connected transducers (serial number, rope type and calibration date), if present, indicating any fault condition found on the transducer. NOTE: to have correct measurements all EQF sensors MUST be of the same ROPE TYPE (rope diameter) as computation of statistical indicators is not correct when measures are from different types of EQF sensors. Software evaluates EQF characteristics providing a temporary indication of ROPE TYPE on the

connected EQF, plus a warning in case of any mismatch. HUB status and battery status are updated. After a successful connection is established, the “Scan for EQF sensors” button and the OFF/ON switch are made available. After data from EQF sensors have been collected, looking to the “Tensioning Results” tab allows to have a look to the rope type of each connected EQF sensor.

Used to activate a SCAN of all the installed HUB ports, in search for EQF transducers. This process may take some time and the “Scan %” bar indicates the progress of the operation. This operation is to be performed when EQF transducers are added to the HUB so that they are recognized by the system, before being used for measurement purposes.

Used to indicate the different status of the HUB:

• INIT: unit is in initializing status after power on / reboot and is not yet ready to accept new commands.

• READY: Unit is ready for measurements, or other activities.

• BUSY: indicates that Hub is scanning for newly connected EQF transducers and cannot process new commands.

• ERROR: error condition found, verify electrical connections and power OFF / ON the HUB to try to reset the error condition.

• STANDBY: HUB (battery powered) has received a power off command and is waiting to be shut down with the I/O push-button.

• POWER-OFF: if this status appears, the battery powered HUB is shutting down.

Used to indicate the percentage of the SCAN being activated by the User to discover newly added transducers.

Indicates the battery status of charge and the status of the monitoring activity. The percentage value of the battery is estimated by the HUB; do not take it as a high accuracy indication. Battery status can be:

• Charged

• Empty

• Fault: contact Factory for battery replacement and test of the HUB.

When Exit button is pressed with HUB powered by an external power source, the Led remains on

till the USB cable is in the Pwr port. By removing from the HUB the powered USB cable the unit is

then switched off. To activate a new measurement session in this latter case, User must power

on the HUB unit from the I/O button, if battery powered, or must plug back a powered USB cable

in the Pwr port.

If no EQF transducer are detected and HUB powered by internal battery, it will power off after 5

minutes of inactivity.

ON/OFF Switch: Slide to LEFT, to ACTIVATE the measurement Slide to RIGHT, to DEACTIVATE the measurement. When tensioning activity on the ropes is finished, deactivate the measurement before selecting the Report tab to generate it.

STATUS Indicator: When measure is switched ON, at first the Calibration date is shown on the status indicator, then it shows:

• In Range message, when measure is between 65 and 235 Kg (350Kg for 8,1 ropes).

• Under Range message, when measure is below 65 Kg, like when the unit is not yet installed on the rope (0 Kg displayed, until a valid measurement is detected).

• Overload message, when measure is over 235 Kg (350Kg for 8,1 ropes).

Drop down list used to switch between the available languages.

Indicates the serial (COM) port used to connect the HUB to the Tablet or to a Laptop computer. The default value (COM 1) is updated by the program with the COM reference where the HUB was found connected, after a scanning procedure of all the available ports. In case you run the program on a notebook, press the down arrow to select the COM port referable to the HUB, or select refresh to update the list before making the selection.

Use UP and DOWN arrows to select the needed Engineering unit to be used to represent the measurements. Default = Kilograms Available options:

Use UP and DOWN arrows to select the desired Suspension Ratio to be used to represent the Total Load measurement. Default value = 1:1 Available options:

Use UP and DOWN arrows to select the desired Tolerance % value, for the tensioning regulation. This value (default = 5%, allowed values from 1 to 10%) is used when calculating the HI Limit and LO Limit values, that determines the width of the acceptable band around the Mean Tensioning measurement.

Bar Graph display used to represent graphically and by number the live tension measurement of the related EQF transducer. All the EQF transducers share the same scale to display the bar indication, but only the EQF1 representation display it. Endpoints of the scale adapts to the selected Engineering units. Bargraph colors can be:

GREEN = Tension of the selected rope is within the HI and LO limits RED = Tension of the selected rope is over the HI limit (Over Range). YELLOW = Tension of the selected rope is under the HI limit (Under Range). NOTE: the bar graph and the numeric indication will blink when the measured tensioning load is

over the maximum load the program accept (235 Kg/350 kg depending from EQF model), indicating visually the possibility to OVERLOAD the EQF transducer.

Reference sliders are used to indicate – graphically – the position of the LO Limit (Yellow color),

the Mean live tensioning (Green color) and the HI Limit (Red color), toward the scale of the bar

graphs.

These two displays indicate the Maximum measured live tension and the EQF sensor that is measuring it.

These two displays indicate the Minimum measured live tension and the EQF sensor that is measuring it.

This display indicates the live Mean value, computed on all the measurements of the active EQF transducers.

This display indicates the live Standard Deviation value, computed on all the measurements of the active EQF transducers.

This display indicates the Sum of the measurements of all the active EQF transducers, multiplied by the Suspension Ratio coefficient (default 1:1).

HI Limit and LO Limit displays shows the live value of the acceptable band extremes, for the tension measurements, computed on the basis of the Mean value and the Tolerance % indicated by the User.

Pushbutton to be used to close the application.

Dialog bar used by the program to provide information to the User about current activities or system status. It is also used to indicate if all the connected EQF sensors are of the same type/rope diameter and is blinking for a short time, to indicate the presence of a problem. NOTE that a warning bar can be shown on top of the statistical indicators, to inform User about the presence of a mismatch of type of sensors connected to the HUB with the consequence that statistical values can be wrong or that there might be one or more EQF sensors that does not support the rope type information (older 6,5 mm diameter types).

Description of the available control and indicator

The Lift’s information is a collection of data entry fields to be used to enter the desired information about the lift’s type, its Serial Number, the Street and City where it has been installed and the ID reference of the Technician that is performing the Tensioning session. These information are going to be printed on the PDF Report and can be entered invoking the

virtual keyboard of the Tablet, pressing the button available on the right side of the Windows bottom bar.

Used to enter comments that will be added to the Tensioning report.

Use this data entry field to enter the reference of your Company, to be printed on the topmost left corner of the report

Pushbutton used to generate the 2 pages PDF report. When pressed, the User is asked to set the name of the Report File and the location where to save it on the Tablet. The button can be disabled and grayed when no connection with the EQF transducers has been established and no measurements are available to be printed. In order to have the possibility to generate a report, a measurement session has to be started and stopped using the ON/OFF button.

These indicators summarize the computed synthetic values corresponding to the tension measurements available when the measurement was stopped using the ON/OFF switch.

The generated reports can be downloaded from the tablet, using a USB key (not supplied) and a

Male Micro USB B / Female USB A OTG adapter (not supplied) or by connecting the Tablet to your

SOFTWARE on notebook

Application program can be installed and run on the supplied tablets or on notebook.

If the software is installed on the supplied tablet the internal hardware / software / operating

system configuration is known and tested.

The installation program can be downloaded from internet using the following link:

Look for link (red color) “Software di installazione”, under the image of the main program window.

The installer is declared - by the Suppler of the Software Development Tool - compatible with

Windows 7SP1 or later and will install a number of tools and software modules from LabVIEW that

may interfere with existing installations of other software tools you may have on your computer.

In case of doubt, before installing the program, get in touch with S2Tech ([email protected]) to have a

list of the software modules that will be installed, so that You can verify compatibility with Your IT

service.

By installing and using the program on a computer different form the one supplied by S2Tech srl,

you explicitly agree that S2Tech does not grant the possibility to give assistance on the

installation or grant the use of the measurement system, as there are too many possible

Operating Systems and configurations that may interfere with the correct activity of the

Measurement System or the drivers/software module used by it to work.

During installation, it is required that the User you are logged on must have the Administrative

rights to correctly install all the modules.

It is strongly required to avoid any preliminary connection of the HUB with the computer, before

the end of the installation program and the restart of the computer.

Installation is started by launching the Setup.exe program (date and size may differ from the above

image) that can be found on the folder you obtain by decompressing the file you downloaded

from the supplied link.

Follow all instruction of the setup program.

When asked, during the installation of the different National Instruments software modules,

unflag the “Disable Windows fast Startup to prevent problems with installing or removing hardware”

option.

At the end of the National Instruments installation, an ST Virtual COM driver setup is started

automatically by the Setup.exe program.

At the end it will be asked to restart the computer.

After the computer restart you have to connect the HUB to the Computer’s USB port, using the

provided USB cable (male USB TYPE A to male Mini USB Type B ) and have the HUB powered

ON, with the EQF sensors connected.

Before starting any measurement or scan on the software, please wait the needed time for the

Operating System to recognize the device and prepare all the required internal settings for the

COMMunication port that will be used to connect the software to the HUB.

In case of doubt, run Device Manager on the computer where software has been installed, to

verify that you have a Virtual COM correctly installed (no exclamation point on it or other

indications of problems) as for the under listed image. Note that how the COM port is identified

depends from the Operating System version (in our experience Windows 7 and Windows 10

behaves differently).

The new COM will be available any time the HUB is powered on and correctly recognized by the

system as it is connected to the same computer’s USB port where initial installation took place.

Any time you connect the HUB using a different computer’s USB port, you have the possibility that

a new COM port is assigned for the connection to the HUB.

When program is activated the connection must be established using first the COM selector, to be

used to choose the COM port where the operating system has recognized the HUB.

All the other program functions are corresponding to the Tablet version described by the manual.

In our experience, it may happen that the Virtual COM is not correctly activated by the Operating

System when HUB is connected to the notebook.

In such situation, it is needed to proceed with a manual search of the driver information, to

refresh the Operating System information.

If you right click on the USB COM of interest, you can select the Update Driver button and then use

the search option “Look the software driver in the computer”.
