Evaluation question 3What have you learnt from your

audience feedback?

What is audience feedback?

Audience feedback is, in my opinion, the most important part of making a film.

Feedback is a key feature in the creative process, and it allows the filmmakers to change things if need be.

Filmmakers make films for an audience, therefore, it is very important that you get their opinion on your product.

An audience can tell you if, for example, there is a scene that is too complicated etc…

Here is a still shot from our short film

USEFUL

There are two out of our three characters in this still. On the far left we have our

protagonist, Craig (Luke Morkas) and on the right we have his mate Simon

(Noah Dunbar)

DialogueFrom our audience feedback we discovered one main problem, a lot of people found that the voice of Simons character was really ‘annoying’ and ‘over-the-top’.

They thought that his tone and pitch of voice took the focus away from the plot and onto him. One peer of mine said: “It would have been fine if Simon was the protagonist….But he's not”

After due consideration we decided that they were right, he was too distracting.

Therefore we decided to take out the sound to see what it looked like, and it looked a thousand times better.

This got my group thinking, perhaps we could by-pass Simons over exaggerated voice. We decided to give it a go, by making our film have a voice over and subtitles.

After a lot of work, the film has made a massive improvement from before. We then asks for some audience feedback and most people thought that it looked a lot better because the film focused on the camera work, which was our strongest element .

Location/setting

Location FeedbackOur audience feedback has told us that there favourite part of our short was our location. Apparently this is because it gave off a really ‘eerie’ and ‘sinister’ vibe, and one person said “It worked really well”.

One of my fellow media students said that they thought the contrast between the intricate setting and the very simple plot was really effective.

I agree with his comment. This is because I feel that without the location our film would lack depth.

Poster Feedback

Poster FeedbackA member of my group, Quin, was in charge of the poster. He created two separate posters and couldn't decide which one he liked more.

As a group we then decided that we would show both of our posters to an audience, and see which one they prefer.

Most of the feedback we got said that they preferred the Yellow block text for ‘Useful’ rather than the white. This is because they said that it stuck out more and was easier to see.

They thought that both posters were believable and stuck to the conventions that a poster should follow.

They said that they loved the ‘small details’, such as: the credit block, the distribution/production dents and they said they really liked the pool quote which came from our magazine.

Here is our magazine article

for our film Useful.

Magazine Article Feedback

Our magazine article got very positive feedback. Our audience thought that portrayed the genre and style of the film very well.

They also felt that the poster and the magazine article were both ‘closely linked’. This is because the pool quote I used in the article, is a review on the poster. They thought this added a sense of believability to both the magazine and the poster.

At first I had two pictures of the set as the still shots for the magazine, but our feedback stated that we should put a picture of our protagonist on the front, so we did.

Our feedback also said how they really liked the small details in the mag. Such as the synopsis, the verdict, the title of the magazine, the page number…etc

FeedbackOverall I feel that our feedback was extremely useful and had a positive impact on our product.

I now agree that feedback is one of the hardest parts of the process but it is definitely the most rewarding.

We have had an enormous help from our audience and I feel we wouldn't have the short we have now if it wasn't for them.
