Rules of Courtly Love According to12th Century Frenchman, Andreas Capellanus

1. Marriage is no real excuse for not loving2. No one can be bound by a double love3. It is well known that love is always increasing or decreasing4. Boys do not love until they arrive at the age of maturity5. When one lover dies, a widowhood of two years is required of the survivor6. It is not proper to love any woman whom one would be ashamed to seek to

marry7. A true lover does not desire to embrace in love anyone except his beloved8. When made public love rarely endures9. The easy attainment of love makes it of little value; difficulty of attainment

makes it prized10. Every lover regularly turns pale in the presence of his beloved11. When a lover suddenly catches sight of his beloved, his heart palpitates12. Real jealousy always increases the feeling of love13. Nothing forbids one woman from being loved by two men or one man by

two women

• Follow along as we read about the church (370)

Page 45: EQ and Do Now: Make your best guess: Why do you think they called the Middle Ages the “Dark Ages”? SWBAT: understand the basics of life in the Middle Ages

• A.Feudalism divides people, but the Church acted as a unifying force. Everyone, rich or poor was united by Christianity.

• B. Invaders are constantly attacking and nobles

and kings were constantly at war. The Church provided a sense of security and unity. Even if kings were at war, God stayed the same.

• C. The life of a peasant was extremely harsh and difficult. The Church promised a better life in heaven. It was motivation to keep going in such a miserable life.

Page 46: EQ and Do Now: Make your best guess: Why do you think they called the Middle Ages the “Dark Ages”? SWBAT: understand the basics of life in the Middle Ages

• D. Peasants spent their short lives working and never traveledmore than 25 miles from the manor. The Church provided a social element. It was where people gathered for holidays and celebrations. In a life that was all work, this was the center of a peasants’ social life.

• E. Kings believed, just like peasants, in the existence of heaven and hell. The Church held much because if they did not like the actions of a king they could…be excommunicated (banished) from the Church and denied salvation. These kings could not go to heaven if they did not follow the wishes of the Church.
