Why Prime?

Coat and Bond loose material on the surface of the base

Harden or toughen the base surface to provide a work platform

for construction equipment Plug capillary voids in the base

course surface to prevent migration of moisture

Provide adhesion between the base course and succeeding

asphalt course.

Test Materials

Red Clay Sand Ottawa Sand

Page 8: Eprime presentation for CalAPA L.A. Technical Meeting June 3, 2015

Water is added to base materials to aid in

compaction

Page 9: Eprime presentation for CalAPA L.A. Technical Meeting June 3, 2015

Samples are taken and compacted then oven

dried

Page 10: Eprime presentation for CalAPA L.A. Technical Meeting June 3, 2015

Samples are wetted with ~ 5ml

of water-on the surface

Page 11: Eprime presentation for CalAPA L.A. Technical Meeting June 3, 2015

Prime is immediately applied

Page 12: Eprime presentation for CalAPA L.A. Technical Meeting June 3, 2015

Penetration is measured by cutting

open the sample

Page 13: Eprime presentation for CalAPA L.A. Technical Meeting June 3, 2015

And then clearing some space in order to measure depth

Now we take it from the lab to the road

Page 18: Eprime presentation for CalAPA L.A. Technical Meeting June 3, 2015

PreparationRoad is pre-wetted 15-25 minutes prior to application with

a water truck.

Roadway is now ready for ePrime

Page 23: Eprime presentation for CalAPA L.A. Technical Meeting June 3, 2015

Application Guidelines

Ambient/Surface Temperature: 500 F and

rising.

Application Rate (Gal/Sy): 0.15 - 0.35

Page 24: Eprime presentation for CalAPA L.A. Technical Meeting June 3, 2015

ePrime is a single application

Page 25: Eprime presentation for CalAPA L.A. Technical Meeting June 3, 2015

Same Day PavingOnce the emulsion has cured (2-10 hours) you are ready to pave

Page 29: Eprime presentation for CalAPA L.A. Technical Meeting June 3, 2015

SS-1HNote that emulsion did not penetrate into the base material and later on as construction traffic drove through, the emulsion tracked out and

peeled off.

Page 30: Eprime presentation for CalAPA L.A. Technical Meeting June 3, 2015

CQS-1HOnce again emulsion did not penetrate into the base material and later on as construction traffic drove through, the emulsion tracked out and

peeled off.

After 15 minutes the emulsion started to break

Page 36: Eprime presentation for CalAPA L.A. Technical Meeting June 3, 2015

Air Temperatures were in the low 90’s which assisted in the breaking of the emulsion

Page 37: Eprime presentation for CalAPA L.A. Technical Meeting June 3, 2015

25 minutes after application, paving began.

Page 38: Eprime presentation for CalAPA L.A. Technical Meeting June 3, 2015

Compared to other emulsions or cut back primes, ePrime is the way to go.

Page 41: Eprime presentation for CalAPA L.A. Technical Meeting June 3, 2015

40 minutes after application light traffic does not disturb the prime

Page 42: Eprime presentation for CalAPA L.A. Technical Meeting June 3, 2015

A cut back prime would not work in a residential setting.

Page 43: Eprime presentation for CalAPA L.A. Technical Meeting June 3, 2015

You would not do this with a cut back prime!

ePrime was applied before the base had cured

Page 48: Eprime presentation for CalAPA L.A. Technical Meeting June 3, 2015

Prime coat protected the base from weather and construction traffic for 7 days while the

base cured

“The thing I like about ePrime is that we can shoot it out and pave on it two hours later. Just like MC70, it holds the moisture and locks up the grade. Unlike MC70, the trackout is virtually unnoticeable. Most primes trackout 1-2 miles from the jobsite. ePrime soaks in and sets up right away so you don’t get any pickup of emulsion on your trucks and no tracking of emulsion. We are telling all local and state agencies that ePrime is the only prime we want to use on our paving jobs.”
