FISH CULTURE• The great demand for fish in our country encourages

businessmen to engage themselves in fish culture.

Fish culture become a profitable business in the

country today because of the availability of

fingerlings and fish feeds in the locality.

•Different kinds of fish live in streams, rivers, lakes,

bays, and seas. Among the fish that can be raised in

the backyard are tilapia, mudfish, catfish, and other

freshwater.

1. Carp or karpa

• carps are very prolific. they are quite strong and

can stir up mud and tear out the root of

vegetation. they prefer shallow bodies of water

for their habitats. they are bottom feeders,

feeding on insects, worms, shells and shrimps.

2. Milkfish or Bangus

• This is a freshwater fish and can be raised

in a fishpond or open seas they are bright

and silvery. Fully grown milkfish ranges

from three-fourths of a meter to a half in

length and can be sometimes be as thick

as child thigh.

3. Catfish or Hito

• It is a very popular desirable freshwater

fish and is considered a delicacy in the

country. It lives in swamp, canals, and

ponds. It usually feeds on worms,

insects, shrimps, although in most cases,

it prefers decayed protein food.

4. Mudfish or Dalag

• It is a freshwater fish. Mudfish live in

muddy canals. Their color is black,

they have a hard body. They can live

a very scant supply of muddy

waters.

5. Tilapia

• There are many species of tilapia, but the tilapia

nile species have been proven to be more

profitable to raise because it grows faster and

bigger than other varieties. Tilapia is a hardy

fish. It attains maturity at about four months

from fry stage . they can be harvested when

they are already three to four months old.

• Freshwater fish such as mudfish, tilapia, carp, and catfish

are plenty during rainy season and the early summer. A

backyard fish raiser should start his fishpond production

during summer. The success of the backyard fishpond will

depend on the following factors.

• Type of soil

• Supply of fresh water

FEEDING THE FISH

• Feed the fish in the morning with rice bran mixed with fish

food available in the agricultural store. The supplemental

food may be used if the natural food is not adequate in the

pond. Commonly used supplemental food are rice bran

(darak) and bread crumbs.

HARVESTING

• The tilapia is harvested after 3-4 months. At this time

the tilapia attains a marketable size of 80-100 grams.

It is best to harvest at dawn and in the morning. The

following are some methods of harvesting.

USE OF BAMBOO TRAP OR ENCLOSURE

• This is the least effective method of

harvesting. This is done by installing the

contraption by the gate. By splashing the

other end of the pond, the fish are scared

off to the trap. They are then scooped as

they accumulate in the enclosure.

SEINING OR USING GILL NET

•This is done by using the

proper mesh size so that only

the marketable size are

caught.

HARVESTING BY DRAINING

• This the most common method of

harvesting fish. While the pond is slowly

drained of water the fish accumulate in the

catching pond. With the use of the scoop

net, the fish are collected.
