Studying Lived Experiences by Interviewing Favourite Teachers

Your favourite teachers can become your role models in helping you to become

a professional teacher. Interview two of your favourite teachers. Try to secure at least

five of their perceptions of a teacher in a four areas of professionalism: values,

conduct, practice and integrity. Record your data as follows:

LIVED EXPERIENCES ON

Professional Values Professional Integrity

Values are the fundamental and core foundation of any educational institutions. These are what makes any human being humane. Teachers, in particular, should possess professional values for they are the ones who shape students’ minds for them to become aware of themselves, to be conscious of what they do and do not know, to help alter current situations in the society, and to be responsible of what they do. Cliché as this may sound but teaching is a noble profession that needs to be practiced by the noble ones. Regardless of academic rank, salary and professional achievements, teachers should reflect values in everything they do because they are subjects of scrutiny and their influence lasts a lifetime. Thus, teachers should strive portraying values for students to have values as well.

One value every professional should have is integrity. In this fast-paced environment, everything seems instant. Unfortunately, despite this development, our level of morality decreases. It is easy to exchange goodness with wrong doing for a comfortable life. Honestly seems superficial just to escape from blame and shame. It is difficult to be honest with something you do not know. One thing I learned from my teacher is not to be shy to say you do not know something. Telling your students you do not know what they ask of you is a brave expression of honesty. It does not make a teacher professional but it does make his/her students trusts him/her more. Being faithful, virtuous, and honest with little things can be trusted with great ones. I won’t compromise telling my students about one thing I do not know with the knowledge they will be bringing the rest of their lives. Teachers character

Page 4: EPISODE 6: THE TEACHER AS A PROFESSIONAL · 2018. 10. 3. · BALOLOY, XENA ANGELA D. BSED-4A Republic of the Philippines CAMARINES NORTE STATE COLLEGE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION Daet, Camarines

is the key to maturity and soundness of principle that will be imbibed by the students.

Professional Conduct Professional Practice

Professionalism is evident in action. It is seen in administration, guidance, management, and stewardship. Teachers are administrators in the classroom. But more of a facilitator, teachers are the second parents of the students. They should care for their students and not seen them as the ones who could satisfy their standards and expectations. Professional conduct is the application of the principles teachers learned from their studies and experiences. Teachers should believe they are accountable of their students’ learning and life. I must admit I’m strict but being strict is my love for my students. I oversee them this way because I believe that a hard training would result to effective achievements, to fruitful victory.

All the mentioned factors need to be exercised by professionals to attain sound principle and effective works. Any institutions should embed practice in their work for the awareness of anyone who belongs in it. This practice should be integrated in all aspects of teaching-learning in order to achieve balanced means and ways. According to Finch and May (2010), for something to become a practice, coherence, cognitive participation, collective action, and reflexive monitoring should be done. This is evident in one of Aesop fables “The Goose with the Golden Egg; wherein the farmer, in his greed, opened the stomach of the goose in order to get more golden eggs. But in his disappointment, he found nothing. This sees that a practice to be effective, we should give concern both to the source (the goose) and the products (the eggs). Likewise, teachers should be concerning both to their job and their students. Forming a practice is not to satisfy oneself but for the welfare of those who will be affected by one’s action.

A. Which of the lived professional values, integrity, conduct and practice of your

two favourite teachers match your present professional dispositions?

My Reflection on the Lived Experiences of my Favourite Teachers

Professional Values Professional Integrity

I wholeheartedly agree to the idea of my favorite teachers regarding professional various wherein a teacher is expected to have good values and should always be true. I believe in the saying that ‘We cannot teach what we do not have’. So, in order for a teacher to teach the students the good values, the teacher must first embody it and be a role model to the students. After all, values are the very core and foundation of education. Therefore, every teacher should possess that professional values.

I also agree with them that every teacher should have professional integrity and must willingly adopt and consistently apply the knowledge, skills, and values of the chosen profession which is teaching. Every teacher should be a professional who consistently and willingly practices within the guidelines of the mission of a chosen profession under the obligation of a Code of Ethics.

Professional Conduct Professional Practice

I definitely agree with them that teachers are the second parents of the students and they are expected to guide them to learn and develop their knowledge and skills. They are accountable that the students should learn from them. There are many ways in teaching that are used by different teachers but what’s similar in them is that their purpose is to mold the students and help them to develop their capabilities. Also, I believe that a teacher should undergo development in order to refine his/her skills in order to make teaching and learning process effective.

I agree with them that in order to make teaching effective, a teacher should undergo practice. After all, practice makes perfect. The very purpose of professional practice is to apply what a teacher learned in his or her studies. It’s applying the theories in the real scenario of teaching. In practice, teachers are able to develop themselves and their teaching methodologies and strategies as time passes by. Therefore, in practice, the teachers are able to enhance their teaching skills professionally for more effective teaching.

B. How can my favorite teachers help me become a professional teacher?

My favorite teachers can help me become a professional teacher through their

words of wisdom and experience. By sharing what they know and what they do, I was

able to learn many things from them. I have learned that a teacher should always act

professionally and embody the professional values, integrity, conduct, and practice.

After all, they are already professionals, so they already know the idea on how to

become a professional teacher. I am definitely sure that I would not forget their

guidance and advices when I am already in the field of teaching. They inspire me to

become a good professional teacher. I want to apply what I have learned from them

in terms of being a professional teacher. Because of them, I was able to realize that

being a professional teacher does not mean that you should only have knowledge and

wisdom, but also, it’s having the skill to effectively facilitate the ‘what, when, and how

Page 6: EPISODE 6: THE TEACHER AS A PROFESSIONAL · 2018. 10. 3. · BALOLOY, XENA ANGELA D. BSED-4A Republic of the Philippines CAMARINES NORTE STATE COLLEGE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION Daet, Camarines

of teaching’. All in all, I am thankful to my two favorite teachers and also to my other

teachers for guiding and molding me to become a professional teacher in the future.

6.3 IDENTIFICATION

Collaborative Analysis of Documents

Form a learning team of at least four members. Analyse the Teacher’s Code of

ethics and categorize the principles of practice into teacher’s professional

responsibilities to the learners, parents, superiors, co-teachers, community and the

state.

My Professional Ethical Responsibilities to

Learners

A teacher's job is to provide a quality education to all students. A professional code of ethics must address this fact, stating that teachers must not show favoritism or discriminate against students. Teachers also must interact with students appropriately, not taking advantage of students in any way, bullying students or putting them down. Contact with students outside of the classroom or school building must be kept to a minimum and must focus on school-related activities and events. In addition to a teacher's job to help all students learn, a professional code of ethics also addresses a teacher's responsibility to keep students safe. Teachers must abide by all school and classroom safety procedures to ensure student safety. It's also a teacher's responsibility to report instances of bullying and harassment. If a teacher suspects cases of abuse or neglect, or a student confides in a teacher in cases of abuse or neglect, the teacher is required to report it to the proper authorities, even if the student requests otherwise.

Parents

The professional educator makes concerted efforts to communicate to parents all information that should be revealed in the interest of the student. The parents are the teacher’s allies to make students more guided and responsible in school. Making the school a home for the students, there should be cooperation with the parents. In order to achieve the goals and dreams for our students., and to develop their knowledge and skills, the teacher partners up with the parents.

Superiors

A professional teacher should have respect for the superior such as the school administrators and etc. He/She should follow the regulations and commands given to them. Additionally, he/she should make the students familiar and also teach them to give respect the superior individuals.

Co-Teachers

A professional educator may seek advice and learn from his/her co-teachers. Every teacher has different knowledge and experiences so it’s good if they are able to share it and learn from each other. For instance, you’re only a newly appointed teacher and you’re having difficulty in managing the behavior of the students. You can ask the other teachers how did they managed the behavior of the students and facilitate the teaching and learning process effectively.

Community

The professional educator endeavors to understand and respect the values and traditions of the diverse cultures represented in the community and in his or her

Page 7: EPISODE 6: THE TEACHER AS A PROFESSIONAL · 2018. 10. 3. · BALOLOY, XENA ANGELA D. BSED-4A Republic of the Philippines CAMARINES NORTE STATE COLLEGE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION Daet, Camarines

classroom. Also, the professional educator manifests a positive and active role in school/community relations.

State

It is the responsibility of a professional teacher to make the students be aware of the what is happening in the economy and society. He/She should let the students to develop civic disposition, leadership, and responsibility. He/She should also let the students realize the role or purpose in the economy/society.

6.4 INTERNALIZATION

Experience Sustainers: Interviewing Resource Persons

Knowing your professional and ethical responsibilities is important for you to

know your legal rights. Try to interview resource persons available in the school

community: school legal officer, parent, and lawyer and school administrators on four

professional issues. What do the laws say about them? What are your corresponding

professional responsibilities? Organize the information you gathered using the

following template:

On Negligence…

What the law says… Art. 20. “Every person who, contrary to law, willfully or negligently causes damage to another, shall indemnify the latter for the same.”

Implications: Minors are typically held to a different standard of care than adults. For example, a minor's negligence may be evaluated against what reasonably careful person of the same age, mental capacity and experience would exercise under the same or similar circumstances.

Applications- The professional teacher should: Be aware and follow all the laws that the government has given and implemented and the law regarding their profession.

Page 8: EPISODE 6: THE TEACHER AS A PROFESSIONAL · 2018. 10. 3. · BALOLOY, XENA ANGELA D. BSED-4A Republic of the Philippines CAMARINES NORTE STATE COLLEGE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION Daet, Camarines

BALOLOY, XENA ANGELA D. BSED-4A

On Corporal Punishment…

What the law says… Senate Bill No. 1348 An Act To Promote Positive, Non-Violent Discipline Of Children, Prohibiting All Forms Of Corporal Punishment, Humiliating And Degrading Treatment, Providing Penalty Therefore, Appropriating Funds And For Other Purposes

Implications: Therefore, the students are given more power since the teachers are no longer allowed to punish them corporally. The students may abuse it but there are other ways to discipline the students aside from corporal punishment. Professionalism of the teacher may vary because s/he has the knowledge and skills to do it.

Applications- The professional teacher should: Know how to deal with the bad behaviors of the students.

On Academic Freedom…

What the law says… REPUBLIC ACT NO. 7722 The State shall likewise ensure and protect academic freedom and shall promote its exercise and observance for the continuing intellectual growth, the advancement of learning and research, the development of responsible and effective leadership, the education of high-level and middle-level professionals and the enrichment of our historical and cultural heritage.

Implications: All individuals are knowledgeable and are active participants of the community. They will be able to develop civic responsibility and leadership.

Applications- The professional teacher should: Be equipped with knowledge concerning the community and the subjects they will teach and should know how to engage students with the activities in the community.

On Child Abuse…

What the law says… Republic Act 7610 Section 1. “Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act."

Implications: Every child is safe and more comfortable to learn because of the awareness of the law regarding child abuse. Therefore, persons who will disobey this law will be punished.

Applications- The professional teacher should: Be knowledgeable about the law regarding the cases that may vary the child abuse.

Self-Reflection

As a potential teacher, what are your realizations regarding the legal

responsibilities of a professional teacher?

As a future professional teacher with potential, I was able to reflect and learn

through researching and finding out about these laws regarding the legal

responsibilities of a professional teacher. I have realized that in order for me to be an

effective teacher, I should follow and obey these laws because these will serve as my

guide for me to be a morally upright teacher who embodies the legal and ethical

responsibilities in terms of negligence, corporal punishment, academic freedom, child

abuse, and etc. I have realized that to be a good teacher, I must be a good follower. I

should discipline and teach my students considering these legal responsibilities. There

are many laws regarding the rights and safety of children and as a potential teacher, I

should be aware in these and be able to apply these when I’m already in the teaching

field. After all, teachers are second parents of the students so we should have care

and compassion for children and be apply to be aware, follow, and apply these legal

and ethical responsibilities.

Self-reflection

Do you honestly feel that you now possess the necessary and appropriate

disposition, and the readiness to assume the legal and ethical responsibilities of a

professional teacher? Share your reflection with your learning group.

Honestly, before undergoing this episode, I don’t think I already have the

necessary and appropriate disposition and readiness to assume the legal and ethical

responsibilities of a professional teacher. However, through observing, interviewing,

and reflecting, I was able to enhance my knowledge and understanding regarding this.

I have learned that as a professional teacher, you should be responsible for what is

happening in the classroom. It’s important to always follow the legal and ethical

responsibilities that a professional teacher should follow. I have also learned that there

are laws under the Philippine constitution about these teachers’ responsibilities. What

I learned from this episode will serve as my guide and blueprint on becoming a

professional teacher. I wanted to make sure that I would be able to follow all of these

and make the students also follow and understand these. Overall, as a professional

teacher, the awareness regarding legal and ethical responsibilities Is very much

important since this will lead us to the right track of teaching effectively. Indeed, a

teacher should be accountable for his/her students. Meaning, in the teaching and

learning process, the teachers are responsible of what the students are doing. With

the knowledge in this, I would be able to apply what I have learned when I’m already

in the teaching field. I want to become a professional teacher and embody these legal

and ethical responsibilities.

I learned that…

a teacher as a person embodies unique personal qualities and these qualities are being refined and developed due to the learning experiences in training ground for teachers. Every teacher should aim for possessing the characteristics of effective teachers. Aside from the desirable personal qualities, every teacher has his/her own educational philosophy and this can be seen in the way he/she teaches and disciplines the students. I have also learned that it is a very challenging task to handle the students’ behavior and facilitate the teaching-learning process. Every teacher should be effective in classroom management. Also, I have learned the qualities required to be a 21st century global teacher such as having a professional education and practical experience, Visual and Information Literacies, Media Literacy, Scientific Literacy, Multicultural Literacy, Field expertise, Economic Literacy, Technology Literacy, Interpersonal Skills, Creativity, Critical thinking and Problem Solving Skills, Flexibility and Adaptability, Leadership and Responsibility, Social and Cross-Cultural Skills, Initiative and Self-Direction, Productivity and Accountability, Ethical, moral, and spiritual values. I have also learned that a teacher has major role in the community since he/she should expose the students in the real world. Lastly, I have learned that in order tfor a teacher to be a professional, he/she should embody professional values, integrity, conduct, and practice, and should be aware of his/her legal and ethical responsibilities to students, and always aim for lifelong learning.

Page 15: EPISODE 6: THE TEACHER AS A PROFESSIONAL · 2018. 10. 3. · BALOLOY, XENA ANGELA D. BSED-4A Republic of the Philippines CAMARINES NORTE STATE COLLEGE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION Daet, Camarines

BALOLOY, XENA ANGELA D. BSED-4A

I realized that…

being a teacher is really difficult since you should always try to enrich your personal qualities to be an effective teacher who can cater the diversity of learners in the 21st century. Because of the learner diversity, every teacher should be knowledgeable of the educational philosophies so that he/she can be able to apply the appropriate and suitable teaching methodologies and strategies to a particular class. Also, I have realized that what’s most challenging of being a teacher is the classroom management since it’s very hard to handle the students’ behavior and discipline them. Luckily, because of the field study, I was able to learn some strategies on how to manage the behavior of the students since it’s a big factor in the teaching and learning process. Additionally, I have realized that a global teacher should be able to think globally and act locally. There are many requirements and qualifications to be a global teacher but it’s necessary since I believe in the statement that ‘You cannot give what you do not have’. So, for a teacher to teach the students, he/she must first learn. I have also realized that a teacher should let the students to learn beyond the classroom and be active members of the community. All in all, I have realized that a teacher should always act professionally and aim for an advanced and professional education.

I changed my ideas about…

how to be a teacher. It’s because back then, I thought what’s only needed to become a good teacher is the knowledge on the subject matter and how to teach. However, through undergoing this field study, I was able to realize that knowledge solely cannot make a teacher effective. What’s most important is that a teacher should have the characteristics of a 21st century teacher, know and understand the educational philosophies so that it will be easy to apply suitable strategies in teaching the students, knows how to manage the classroom, physically and socially, knows the qualities and requirements to be a global teacher, knows the importance of the school to the community and implement activities in the community, and be aware and apply the legal and ethical responsibilities of a professional teacher. Indeed, teaching is a noble profession, a mission and a vocation. It’s not just about wanting to teach, but more importantly, it’s about wanting the students to learn.

When I become a teacher, I need to…

enhance my personal qualities and try to possess the characteristics of a 21st century teacher since education in the 21st century is better and more improved than the past. Today’s teachers should be a complete package, so I need to know the ‘what-when-how’ of teaching or what, when, and how to teach. Also, I need to have my own educational philosophy, and also be knowledgeable about the other educational philosophies since the teaching strategy to be used should cater the needs, wants, and lacks of the students. In other words, it should be appropriate to them. Also, I need to know what kind of strategies to be used in managing the behavior of the students. After all, classroom management is difficult to do. Additionally, I need to finish all the requirements in becoming a teacher for me to easily get hired. In order to have professional growth and development, I need strive for continuing education to be global teacher. I also need to be knowledgeable regarding the relationship between the school and the community to implement activities wherein the students can be exposed in the community. Lastly, I need to apply the legal and ethical responsibilities I have learned from this episode in order to be a professional teacher.
