Dear Friends,

First and foremost, thank you for helping those in need through Episcopal Charities! Your generosity, along with that of other caring contributors and volunteers, is at the heart of all we do.

Simply put, your support enables Episcopal Charities to partner with parish programs to meet local needs. Working “on the ground,” these programs know the strengths and challenges of the communities they serve. We help the programs to become and remain strong through both funding and operational support that is designed to build skills, ensure accountability and promote creative vision.

During 2013, 93 programs touched the lives of more than 800,000 New Yorkers. Community kitchens stood ready with nutritious food for the hungry and fellowship for the forgotten. After-school and summer offerings helped children grow academically, artistically and socially. From food pantries to post-prison re-entry programs, those seeking assistance with basic needs or in building brighter futures were welcomed with open arms.

As you read through the pages of this Annual Report, we hope that you enjoy a sense of ownership and shared accomplishment. Because, from rural upstate villages to densely populated urban neighborhoods, help and compassion are there for all… thanks to you.

Sincerely,

A Letter from the Bishop and the President

The Rt. Rev. Andrew M L Dietsche Bishop of New York

John Talty President, Episcopal Charities

We’re not just funders – we’re partners.

E piscopal Charities is an independent non-profit organization affiliated with

the Episcopal Diocese of New York. As the outreach arm of the Diocese, we provide funding and operational support to parish-based programs that serve the broader community. Since our founding in 1996, we’ve granted more than $12 million to grassroots programs serving New Yorkers in need … all made possible by individuals, congregations, foundations and corporations that share our commitment to caring.

Our programs are diverse and open to all. Our community kitchens and food pantries work to address hunger in local towns and neighborhoods. Skills-building programs help brighten the futures of the unemployed, recent immigrants and ex-prisoners re-entering society. Health and wellness programs help to improve the quality of life for senior citizens, children on the autism spectrum, people with AIDS and recovering substance abusers. Children’s arts, academic enrichment and summer recreation offerings broaden the horizons of thousands of young people annually.

Building relationships: Thank you to the 5,000+ caring volunteers who invested time in their communities and served our neighbors in 2013.

Our network of volunteers, donors, programs and parishes ensures that our neighbors can count on a helping hand. Every day of the week, nearly every hour of the day, an Episcopal Charities program is providing support, education and nourishment to people in need across the diocese.

Strengthening Outreach: In 2013, 144 people — clergy, staff and volunteers working in our programs — took part in free professional-development training through Episcopal Charities’ Sustainability Institute workshops.

STRENGTHENING CAPACITY

A single grant can go a long way. In 2012, we started asking programs what they needed to go to the next level. Since then, we’ve disbursed nearly $50,000 in capacity-building grants. In Middletown, NY, the Guild of St. Margaret Soup Kitchen at Grace Church used our funds to go green — installing a dishwasher that, combined with donated plates, cups and silverware, stopped the waste generated by more than 52,000 disposable place settings annually.

BUILDING BACK AFTER SUPERSTORM SANDY

Thanks to your generosity, we’ve been able to distribute more than $187,000 to communities devastated by 2012’s Superstorm Sandy. In cooperation with Episcopal Relief & Development and the Episcopal parishes of Staten Island, we’ve helped five Episcopal Service Corps Interns marshal more than 2,000 volunteers to help Sandy survivors rebuild and return home. And through the Heart of the Home project, parishioners from local churches are furnishing returning homeowners with food and small appliances for their rebuilt kitchens.

O n Thursday, November 21st, Episcopal Charities held its annual Tribute Dinner at the

Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Manhattan and welcomed 540 guests. The dinner raised $925,000 to help support the 93 programs of Episcopal Charities.

Episcopal Charities was pleased to honor William H. Donaldson and Wolcott B. Dunham, Jr. Both of our honored guests offered inspirational remarks that lent the evening a true spirit of fellowship and

a call to provide help and hope to those in need. The Dinner Chairs were Board Members Charles S. Garland and Martin J. Sullivan. Martin also served as Master of Ceremonies.

Additional highlights of the evening were a performance by special guests the Whiffenpoofs of Yale and inspirational remarks by Kevin Vidal, a graduate of Grace Church, Manhattan’s GO Project.

Our thanks go to our Tribute Dinner Chairs, our honorees and their supporters.

“I’ve seen how the programs of Episcopal Charities can be transformational for those who are served, transformational for the parishioners who serve and transformational for a parish that finds a growing and vibrant mission.”

LABYRINTH AT ST. GREGORY’S, WOODSTOCK

Thanks to a generous gift from the Samuel J. Freeman Charitable Trust, we helped St. Gregory’s Church to build a unique wheelchair-accessible labyrinth in Woodstock, NY. The contemplative space complements the parish’s Horticultural Therapy Garden for Young People.

Leadership

Episcopal Charities is proud of its participation in the Better Business Bureau Charity Seal Program, an immediate and easily recognizable symbol to donors that our organization has met the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability. These standards evaluate charities for financial accountability, governance and oversight, effectiveness measures, fundraising and informational materials.

A commitment to caring. It’s more than our tagline. It is a sentiment shared by Episcopal Charities’ Board of Directors, donors, staff, volunteers and parish-based programs as we reach out to New Yorkers in need.

Whether you offer your financial support or get involved in a hands-on manner, we invite you to take an active role in making life better for many thousands of those less fortunate. Your participation is vitally needed, most welcomed and greatly appreciated!

Join Us in Caring

You can serve others by partnering with Episcopal Charities in one of the following ways:

• Donate. Every gift matters and is truly appreciated.

• Volunteer. Lend an hour of your time to tutor a child or serve a meal. Or commit to a more specialized volunteer opportunity through our Consultant Corps.

• Attend an event. All special-event proceeds go directly toward supporting our programs.

• Give through your corporation. Many corporations help support Episcopal Charities through matching-gift programs, event attendance and employee-recommended grants.

• Include Episcopal Charities in your will. You can help neighbors in need for many years to come by including Episcopal Charities in your estate planning.

• Connect with us.
