President’s Corner: Our blooms were a little late this year

but we still had a great display at the

Mother's Day show. Jerry Moreau did

a fantastic job organizing the show. He and Cindy

made sure we had tons of cuttings. Many thanks

to them and to all the members who pitched in to

make this a wonderful weekend. The previous

weekend at the Wild Animal Park was also great

fun and financially successful. We had great

crews at both weekends and at the several cutting

parties. Jerry Moreau, Don Patterson, Pat Neal

and myself represented SDES at the South Bay

Show. We had a table display that included our

blooms and George French's. It was great to visit

with Epi friends from the LA , Ventura and San

Francisco areas. Jerry was able to add some

French hybrids and some other unusaul epies to

the WAP inventory. Personally I tried to stay out

of the sales area, because I know I have no self

control. By the time this newsletter is delivered

the caravan will be over. Mildred Mikas has done

a nice job organizing it. And thanks to Matt and

Karen Cheney and Cliff and Patty Brayshaw for

allowing many of us to see their gardens for the

first time. At the May meeting Derek Obaya-

shi gave a clever slide show presentation of his

hybrids. He had members shouting out answers to

his questions in order to get some of his special

hybrids. It was great to leisurely wander around

the mini show and view our blooms. Sam Peebles

and I compared our ‗Swedish Sunrise‘

blooms. They were pretty much the same shape

but the color intensity was quite different. That

brings up the questions of how much heat, light,

fertilizer etc. effects the color and size of blooms.

My wish for all of you is to relax and enjoy the

blooms. See you at the June meeting.

May was a busy month for all. We had

two events at the park. The first weekend we had

our annual sale. We raised just over $900.00 for

the WAP Epiphyllum House. There was a great

turn out to help with the sale, some new and not so

new members were on hand to assist people pur-

chase cuttings and plants. It‘s a great way to get

to know other members and learn about epis.

Thank you for all who brought flowers to the

show. It really makes a difference when selling

cuttings. I love the expression on people‘s faces

when they see an epi flower for the first time.

Helping out this month was Sandra Chapin, Ron

& Velma Crain, Bill Greene, Sam Peebles, Don

Huckle, Barb Alvarez, Jerry & Mildred Mikas,

Jerry Mackle, Bob Buchs, Mike and Sharon,

Cindy Decker, and Jerry & Pat Dobbins (Epis by

Pat). I hope I didn‘t forget anyone, I apologize

now if I did.

The epi house is looking good. There are

many more blooms than expected. The next work

party is June 13th.We will be weeding, fertilizing,

and moving plants. Come join the fun.

See you there!

June Program: The speaker for the June General Meeting will be Walter Parkola of

the Blossom Valley Protea located in El Cajon. In this climate of water conservation, the drought-tolerant

protea might be the perfect answer to a complement for our garden of epis..

Once again extraordinary colors filled

Room 101 on Mother‘s Day– many

in the guise of past decades– Some

members chose to cleverly represent all decades- Julie

and Jeff Hilbers displayed their epis amongst historical

references to Mother‘s Day events in past decades

where their bloom of ‗Honey Belle‘ earned their

exhibitor‘s best. Marj Myers very cleverly incorpo-

rated several decades of recorded sound in her blue-

ribbon, simple flower arrangement– an LP record, a

45, a cd, cassette tape, and an iPod completed her

collection. Tying for the first in the flower arrange-

ment was Mildred Mikas‘ ‘Black Satin‘ blooms

arranged amidst vinca spikes, framed with broad Calla

Lily leaves in a beautiful old teapot. Janine Topell

took third place with her arrangement of a ‘Meadow

Rose‘ in an old 1940‘s mail box. George French

celebrated decades of raising and hybridizing epis in a

party theme. His bloom of ‗French‘ Gold not only

earned his exhibitor‘s best, (EB) but captured the eye

of our president who selected it as her second choice

for the ―President‘s Choice‖ award. Mildred Mikas

displayed decades of epis in Japan, where her bloom

of ‗Sakurahime‘ appropriately earned her EB.

Other displays focused in on specific eras or

decades. Derek Obayashi won the Troxell II division

with a beautiful array of blooms amidst old rusted

farm equipment of yore. Also addressing earlier days,

Janine Topell‘s 2nd-place ribbon table displayed epis

with 40‘s and 50‘s pictures on a beautiful quilt. The

40‘s decade was represented in a patriotic salute to

World War II by Mildred and Gerry Mikas. Epis were

rockin‘ and rollin‘ through the ‗50‘s on the 45‘s.

Closer observation noted the titles of the hit songs:

―Sixteen Tons of Epies‖ by Tennessee Ernie Ford,

―Don't Let the Epies Get In Your Eyes― by Perry

Como, ―Epihouse Rock ― by Elvis Presley, ―Poor

Little Epi‖ by Ricky Nelson, and ―Wake Up Little

Epi‖ by the Everly Brothers. The addition of a soda,

burger and fries completed the picture of Sandra

Chapin and Katelyn Hissong‘s display where a

beautiful bloom of ‘Lloyd

J. Pittman‘ earned their

EB.

Onward to the 60‘s where Judy Johnson‘s

Society Table sported VW vans and bugs headed to

the beach with surf boards. This table had stellar

blooms– Katherine Barto‘s ‗Frȕlingspracht‘ stole the

blue ribbon. Taking second was Pat Neal‘s ‗Rampage‘

and Phil Peck‘s lovely bloom of ‗Clown‘ came in

third. There were exceptionally full and large

blooms of ‗Tassel‘ and ‘Crowning Glory‘ (Phil Peck)

and Linda Canon‘s ‗Clarence Wright‘ was in perfect

form. Galen Pittman and Jerry Moreau celebrated

―Exotica‖ where epis were displayed on revolving

turntables, individually framed with LP album jackets.

The stage was graced by beautiful epiphytic

plants where Ken Loomis‘ ‗Mystic Magic‘ took first

prize. There were some exceptional blooms at this

year‘s show– judging was no small task! Look for

some spectacular new hybrids from Derek Obayashi-

‗Gail Matsumiya‘ is a brand new hybrid with ruffled

purple edges on softer deep pink/rose broad petals. It

is definitely one to add to your ―want list‖! Taking

2nd place was his ‗Sego Matsumiya‘ - an exquisite

bloom with narrow, orange multi petals rimmed with

deep fuchsia. ‗DTO‘ took 3rd place– a multi-petaled,

pale yellow with an unusual shape. A few years ago,

we added a ―new seedling‖ table where hybridizers

could show off some of their seedlings and get their

―arms twisted‖ to register them so we could share in

the beauty. Among the prize winners here were

Derek‘s ‗Mojave Gold‘ x ‗Lisa Marie‘- This large

bloom has the colors of ‗Mojave Gold‘ and the shape

of ‗Lisa Marie‘- definitely worthy of the blue ribbon!

In 2nd place was Don Patterson‘s huge and beautiful

‗Wonderful One‘ x ‘Golden Jubilee‘ with ruffled

petals. He plans to register it as ‗Cest Magnifique‘.

Watch for (or stand in line) cuttings!

From our Librarian:

Outside of A Dog Outside of a dog, a man's best friend is

a book. Inside of a dog it's too dark to

read. -- Groucho Marx

This month I will talk about another bilingual

book, in this case English and German. But the text

sections are minimal, as most of the book consists of

photographs. After all the chaos and excitement of

the shows and sales last month, it's nice to relax and

look at photographs. Besides the relaxation aspect,

one can also use a book like this to make 'want lists'

for future sales.

Epiphyllum, by Frank Süpplie, contains over 450

photographs. There is a nice selection of epiphyllum

hybrids, including a section on Joyce Carr's hybrids

(more about Joyce Carr later) and a small section of

new introductions from Mr. Süpplie. In addition,

there is a small section on epiphyllum culture near the

back of the book (in German and in English)

though it is slanted towards greenhouse culture.

All in all this is a great book for relaxing and

making additions to the 'want list'. I could not

find a publishing date but I believe it was published

around 2005. (ISBN: 90-8651-007-9) The library has

one copy of this book.

Before I close, a little about Joyce Carr. She was an

Australian hybridizer who hybridized many epiphyl-

lums, aporocacti, and schlumbergera as well as multi-

generic crosses (e.g. aporo by epi) . One of her

epiphyllum hybrids you may have heard of is 'Liberty

Glow' which many of our members grow. For a little

more information about Joyce Carr, the Ballarat

Cactus and Succulent Society has a small gallery of

some of her hybrids here: http://

www.cactusoz.org/carrgallery.htm

For Cuttings:

A BIG THANK YOU goes to all who

made our Mother‘s Day Sale a fun time and a

great success. It is only through the generosity

of its members that this club is a success.

This year we raised a good amount of money.

Thank you to all who donated cuttings and

plants, and to those who help go to members

homes and make the cuttings, without you and

the epis there would be no sale. We had over

600 different hybrids to choose from, thou-

sands of cuttings and hundreds of plants.

Thank you to all who worked at the sale Satur-

day and Sunday. Thank you to all who came

to buy. As a not for profit educational organi-

zation, this sale provides us with a wonderful

opportunity to spend time educating the public

and encouraging them to grow epiphyllums.

Thank you!!!

For the Show: The show was a success!! Thank you to every-

one who pitched in to help make it a wonderful

time. Everything went smoothly this year.

Thanks to everyone who created a display, a

flower arrangement, or brought flowers to the

different tables. Thank you to all the judges

and judging clerks. A big thank you goes to

Larry Taylor who, thanks to his van, was able

to bring plants and everything out of storage

and return back into storage for the show.

Thank you for all who helped setting up and

breaking down the show. Lots of hands make

for light work. We have a great club and

should be proud of all that we do.

A Huge Thank-you to All! —-Jerry

SDES has taken on the task of raising money for a

Teak Memorial/ Appreciation Bench with a Brass

Plaque to honor dedicated Epi individuals; this is be-

ing done through a donation to the S.D. Zoological

Society. Traditionally a donation of $25,000.00 is

required per bench. We have been very fortunate;

SDES (our) part will be only $12,500.00.

A generous donor has stepped forward who admires

the Epi House, its beautiful flowers, its dedicated

friendly crew of workers (that‘s us) and the Epi

House‘s quiet tranquil setting in the Wild Animal

Park.

This donor heard we were looking into acquiring a

Bench and said,‖ The donor will match DOLLAR for

DOLLAR of what we raise!‖ Nothing is expected in

return, except anonymity and another quiet place to

reflect and admire the beauty all around!

We still need to raise about $8,000.00; our donor‘s

money is guaranteed. That‘s where you come in….

So far our White Elephant table has brought us about

$200.00. Another anonymous donator donated

$1500.00 for 2 names on the Brass Plaque on our

bench. Mildred donated $250.00 from the sale of cut-

tings and plants. Contributors of $25.00 or more will

have their name or loved ones name on a plaque

posted in the Epi House. For larger gifts of $1000.00

or more you or your loved ones name will

appear on the brass plaque on the bench. For

a donation $1500.00 two names would be

included, as an example, Mary and John Smith. We

will even set up a 4 payment schedule to help with

your commitment. You also will receive an acknowl-

edgement for tax purposes.

Please start thinking of ways to have fun fund-raisers:

Silent Auctions, Yard Sales, Garden related item

(inexpensive) sales at meeting, Wine and Cheese

Party at your home or a $2.00 a plate dinner. We need

your ideas and participation. Bring a garden related

item for us to sell to the June meeting; prices start at

$1.00.

Currently 50 cents of the profits from the sale of each

epi to the Plant Trader will go toward the Bench. So

far $125.00 has been raised this way. At the Caravan

we had an Auction of some special epies and other

interesting items. We will let you know next month

how much we made.

We are looking forward to your input and support. So

tell all your epi friends and get them involved. You

may e-mail or mail Mildred Mikas or Sandra Chapin

with your ideas or if you wish to donate. Thank

you…. with your help and donations ‘’everything

is possible’’!

Laura Johnson for decorating and setting it up!)

was a special challenge for the judges. There were

so many blooms, it is hard to imagine how they

were able to narrow down their choices to the top

three. But Sam Peebles walked away with the blue

ribbon for his ‗Go Go Girl‘, a perfectly formed

flower with mottled pink petals with lighter mid-

stripe. Watch out, Sam. You might have midnight

visitors– How‘s your guard dog? Coming in 2nd

was Sandra Chapin‘s ‘Orinda‘- deep pink with

orange mid-stripe. ‘Charming Beauty‘ of Janine

Topell was 3rd– a lovely small with dark and light

Show! (Continued from page 3)

shades of orange.

On the French Collection table, Jerry

Moreau‘s spectacular ‗Vivid One‘ captured the blue.

Phil Peck‘s huge ‗Ivory Brocade‘ was second and

Jerry‘s ‗Pink Organdy‘ stole 3rd– definitely a

difficult decision for the judges– each bloom was

exceptionally large and perfectly formed.

On Barb Alvarez‘s table one could see more

uncommon blooms. ‗Master of Mars‘ is definitely

worth adding to your want list. Ken Loomis brought

his prize-winning flowers once more, each one more

spectacular than the one before. The dice must have

been tossed to find the EB on his table– but settled on

his ‘Dijonnaise‘. As the previous color pages

revealed, this was a spectacular Mother‘s Day Show.
