Ephesians 6 Eph 1-3 Was About Being In Christ 6. 4-6 7. Ephesians Our Position Chapters 1-3 tell us about our position and identity in the church, the body of Christ. Our Practice Chapters 4-6 tell us how our position in the body of Christ should direct our walk 8. Eph 6:1-9 9. Eph 6:2, "Honor Your Father And Mother" Eph 6:2, "Honor your father and mother" Jesus quoted this verse a lot; Mt 19:20"All these I have kept," the young man said. "What do I still lack?" ( Mk 10:20, Lk 18:21) Mk 7:10-12Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and, 'Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.' 11 But you say that if a man says to his father or mother: 'Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is Corban' (that is, a gift devoted to God), (Mt 15:4, Lk 18:21) 10. Eph 6:2, "Honor Your Father And Mother" Jesus quoted this verse a lot in the gospels; The Bible quotes it a lot; The Old Testament; Ex 21:17; Lev 19:3, 20:9; Deut 5:16, 27:16; Pr 20:20; 30:17). The New Testament; Eph 6:2, Col 3:20; 2 Tim 3:2,3; Rom 1:30, plus the 6 gospel quotes by Jesus It must be important! 11. Eph 6:2, First With A Promise Eph 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 "Honor your father and mother"-which is the first commandment with a promise Wow! What's the promise? 12. Eph 6:2, Enjoy Long Life Ex 20:12 "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. Dt 5:16 "Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you. 13. Eph 6:3, Different Dispensation Ex 20:12so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. (Duet 5:16) Israel gets the Holy Land how much land does the church get? The church gets long life on the earth. No land!? Mt 5:5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Dan 2:35But the rock that struck the statue became a huge mountain and filled the whole earth. Rev 21:7 He who overcomes will inherit all this 14. God Loves Israel They are Gods chosen people Even if they dont like it! 15. Duet 5:16, As God Commanded You? Duet 5:16 "Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you When did God command this before the 10 commandments? 16. God could have commanded it in Ge 2:24a man will leave his father and mother Ge 4:9"Am I my brother's keeper?" Ge 9:22Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father's nakedness Ge 19:33they got their father to drink wine Ge 27:13His mother said to him, "My son, let the curse fall on me Ge 37:32They took the ornamented robe back to their father Ge 49:4you went up onto your father's bed 17. When Did God Command This Before The 10 Commandments? Dt 4:23 Be careful not to forget the covenant of the Lord your God that he made with you; do not make for yourselves an idol in the form of anything the Lord your God has forbidden. Dt 4:40 Keep his decrees and commands, which I am giving you today, so that it may go well with you and your children after you and that you may live long in the land the Lord your God gives you for all time. Dt 4:13 He declared to you his covenant, the Ten Commandments, which he commanded you to follow and then wrote them on two stone tablets. 18. DEUTERONOMY Always read the Bible in context! Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the OT and was called by the Greeks Deuteronomion Or the second law , so we get our name Deuteronomy, or a second statement of the law or "repetition of the law Deut 17:18 When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law 19. Deuteronomy 5:16, Honour The Biblical Illustrator lists 3 ways, THE DUTIES of children are.summed up in one word, "honour" -- "Honour thy father and thy mother. 1. Reverence. There may occur cases in which the parental character is as far as possible from all that could inspire either reverence or love. But still, how much soever this may be the case, there is a respect due to the person of a parent, for the very relation's sake; just as there is an official respect due to the person of a magistrate on account of the station he occupies, independently of the claims of personal character. This respect is not the dictate of any servile fear. It is associated with love, and is proportional to it. It might be defined a reverential familiarity. 2. Obedience. 3. Maintenance. This, of course, comes into application only in 20. Eph 6:4, Fathers, Do Not Exasperate Eph 6:4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children 3949 parorgizo {par-org-id'-zo} Meaning: 1) to rouse to wrath, to provoke, exasperate, anger DLK= para=from, orge=wrath 21. Eph 6:4, Fathers, Do Not Exasperate NIVNET NAS ESV NAUEphesians 6:4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children The NIV is a little soft here NKJ KJV Ephprovoke not your children to wrath Ephdo not provoke your childrento anger CSBEphdon't stir up anger in your children 22. Eph 6:4, Fathers, Bring Them Up Eph 6:4 Fathers, instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. [shemah] Dt 6:4-9 Hear [shemah, listen], O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. 23. Eph 6:4, Fathers, Bring Them Up Eph 6:4 Fathers, instead, bring them up in the training and instruction [Bible] of the Lord Fathers are to bring them up You can delegate the job but not the responsibility 24. Eph 6:5, Employees, Obey Your Earthly Employers Eph 6:5-8 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. 6 Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. 7 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, 8 because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free. 25. Eph 6:9, Employers, Treat Your Employees In The Same Way Eph 6:9 And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him. 2 Ti 2:24 And the Lord's servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Ro 14:4 Who are you to judge someone else's servant? To his own master he stands or falls. 26. Eph 6:10-24 27. Eph 6:10, Be Strong In The Lord Eph 6:10 Finally, be strong [empowered, imperative passive] in the Lord and in his mighty power 1 Co 16:13-14 Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. 14 Do everything in love. 2 Ti 2:1 You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus 28. Eph 6:11, The Devil's Schemes Eph 6:11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 2 Co 2:11 in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes 2 Co 11:14Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. Eph 6:16.fiery darts of the wicked KJV 1 Pe 5:8a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.. 29. Eph 6:12, A Spiritual Battle Eph 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Why do we see broken homes, disgraced pastors, split churches, ignorant untrained Christians, un- churched Christians, scattered teens? 30. Eph. 6:12, Our Struggle Eph. 6:12 ". . . our struggle is. . . spiritual " 2 Cor. 4:4 ". . . the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that they might not see the light of the gospel . . . Our struggle is against the flesh, the Devil, and the world. 1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. KJV 31. Since Our Struggle Is Spiritual 32. Did Paul Get This Illustration From The Roman Soldier Who Was Guarding Him Acts 28:16 When we entered Rome, Paul was allowed to stay by himself, with the soldier who was guarding him. Or from. 33. Isa 59:15-18, The Armor Of God Isa 59:15-18 The Lord looked and was displeased that there was no justice. 16 He saw that there was no one, he was appalled that there was no one to intervene; so his own arm worked salvation for him, and his own righteousness sustained him. 17 He put on righteousness as his breastplate, and the helmet of salvation on his head; he put on the garments of vengeance and wrapped himself in zeal as in a cloak. 18 According to what they have done, so will he repay wrath to his enemies and retribution to his foes 34. Eph 6:13, Put On The Armor Of God Eph 6:13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that [if] when the day of evil comes, you may be able to [go out against the Devil] stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Binding Satan and Territorial praying Jude 3-10slipped in among youare godless menreject authority and slander celestial beings. 9 But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him, but said, "The Lord rebuke you!" 10 Yet these men speak abusively against whatever they do not understand; and what things they do understand by instinct, like unreasoning animals... 35. Eph 6:13, Dressed For The Occasion 36. Eph 6:14, Jesus Is The Christ Eph 6:14the belt of truth buckled around John 14:6"I am the way and the truth and the life Ro 15:8Christ has become a servant of the Jews on behalf of God's truth Col 1:5in the word of truth, the gospel 1 Ti 3:15the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth 2 Ti 2:15who correctly handles the word of truth. 1 Pet 1:22purified yourselves by obeying the truth 1 John 5:6the Spirit is the truth. 3 John 3continue to walk in the truth. John 17:17Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 37. Eph 6:15, Readinessthe Gospel Eph 6:15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. Evangelism? Bible Knowledge Commentary says, This verse does not speak of the spreading of the gospel, for Christians are pictured in vv. 10-16 as standing, not advancing. Instead this refers to a believer's stability or surefootedness from the gospel which gives him peace so he can stand in the battle. 38. Eph 6:15, The Gospels Assurance Eph 6:15the gospel of peace. 2 Ti 1:9saved us and called us to a holy life not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace 2 Ti 1:12I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day. Jude 24 To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault 39. Eph 6:16, The Shield Of FaithRoman Shield reproduction 40. When we put of the helmet of salvation we will be saved from Satanic attack. The church will be raptured Pre-Trib When God/Jesus puts of the helmet of salvation the remnant of Jews will be saved? 42. Eph 6:17, The Pre-Trib Helmet Of Salvation 1 Thes 5:4-11 But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. 5 You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. 43. Eph 6:17, The Helmet Of Salvation Eph 6:17 Take the helmet of salvation... Isa 59:17 He [Messiah] put on righteousness as his breastplate, and the helmet of salvation on his head; he put on the garments of vengeance and wrapped himself in zeal as in a cloak. When God/Jesus puts of the helmet of salvation who will be saved? When we put of the helmet of salvation who will be saved? 44. Eph 6:17, Our Helmet Of Salvation Eph 6:17 Take the helmet of salvation ... Mt 26:51one of Jesus' companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. Saved from fatal attack 45. Eph 6:19-20, Pray Also For Me Eph 6:19 Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, Eph 6:20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should. 52. Eph 6:20, I Am An Ambassador In Chains 2 Co 5:18-20 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. 53.
