Chapters 4-6 Are About Our Walk Our Position Chapters 1-3 tell us about our position and identity in the church, the body of Christ. Our Practice Chapters 4-6 tell us how our position in the body of Christ should direct our walk 5. So Lets Continue Our Walk In Ephesians 5 6. Last Time, In 4 Paul and the Holy Spirit of God commanded us to Eph 4:1live a life worthy of the calling 7. How Do We Live A Life Worthy? Eph 4:1live a life worthy of the calling Eph 4:2completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Eph 4:3keep the unity of the Spirit Eph 4:14no longer be infants Eph 4:15speaking the truth in love Eph 4:17no longer live as the Gentiles do Eph 4:22put off your old self Eph 4:23made new in the attitude of your minds Eph 4:24put on the new selflike God in true righteousness and holiness 8. How Do We Live A Life Worthy? Eph 4:25put off falsehood and speak truthfully Eph 4:26In your anger do not sin Eph 4:28steal no longer, but must work Eph 4:28share with those in need Eph 4:29Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths Eph 4:30do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God Eph 4:31-32 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. 9. Ephesians 5, Describes Our Walk Eph 5:1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear childrenKJV Eph 5:2walk in love, as Christ also has loved usNKJV Eph 5:8Walk as children of lightNKJV Eph 5:15walk circumspectly, not as foolsNKJV 10. Eph 5:1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; KJV 11. Eph 5:1, Be Imitators Of God Eph 5:1-2 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. 3402 mimetes {mim-ay-tace'} Meaning: 1) an imitator Origin: from 3401; TDNT - 4:659,594; n m Usage: AV - follower 7; 7 3401 mimeomai {mim-eh'-om-ahee} 12. Be Imitators 1 Co 4:16 Therefore I urge you to imitate me. Heb 6:12 We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised. Heb 13:7Consider the outcome of their [patriarchs] way of life and imitate their faith. 3 John 11 Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God. 13. Eph 5:2, Gave Himself Up For Us Eph 5:2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Ro 12:1-2 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God this is your spiritual act of worship. 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is his good, pleasing and perfect will. 14. Eph 5:1-2, Children Of God Eph 5:1-2as dearly loved children One day, one of my first-grade students, Taylor, asked his grandmother if he was a child of God. "Why, of course you are, Taylor," she replied. He looked puzzled, then responded, "Well I better get home and tell Mom and Dad they think I'm theirs!" 15. Eph 5:3-7 Eph 5:3-7 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. 5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person such a man is an idolater has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. 7 Therefore do not be partners with them. 16. Eph 5:3, Not Be Even A Hint Eph 5:3these are improper for God's holy people Mt 15:16-20 "Are you still so dull?" Jesus asked them. 17 "Don't you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man 'unclean.' 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20 These are what make a man 'unclean'; but eating with unwashed hands does not make him 'unclean.'" 17. Eph 5:4, Obscenity, Foolish Talk Or Coarse Joking Eph 5:4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. Gal 5:19-21 The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this [present active] will not inherit the kingdom of God. 18. Eph 5:5, Wont Inherit The Kingdom Eph 5:5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person such a man is an idolater has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 1 Cor 6:9-11 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. [washed=aorist middle, sanctified= aorist passive, justified= aorist passive], mid. wash oneself 1 Cor 6:11 19. Eph 5:6, God's Wrath Comes Eph 5:6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes [indicative present] on those who are disobedient. CSB Eph 5:6is coming on the disobedient John 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains [indicative present active] on him." It doesnt say is put on him. 20. Eph 5:6, Children Of The Devil Eph 5:6on those who are disobedient. Mt 13:38the good seed stands for the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one John 8:44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire Ac 13:10 "You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! 1 John 3:10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother. 21. Eph 5:7, Not Partners Eph 5:7 Therefore do not be partners with them. 2 Co 6:14 Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? Ps 106:28 They yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods 22. Ephesians 5:7-14 Bible Knowledge Commentary says; Therefore verses 7-14 deal with church discipline. Believers are to walk in the light, and in so doing to expose other believers of any works that are unfruitful so that they too may walk in the light and please their Lord. 1Co 5:1-2 there is sexual immorality among youShouldn't you rather have been filled with grief and have put out of your fellowship the man who did this? 23. Eph 5:8-9 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 24. Eph 5:10-14 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, 25. Eph 5:8You Were Once Darkness Eph 5:8you were once darkness John 3:19-21 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God." 26. Eph 5:13, Exposed By The Light Eph 5:13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, Same Grk. Eph 5:15-20 Eph 5:15-20 Be very careful, then, how you live not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 29. Eph 5:16 Every Opportunity Eph 5:16 making the most of every opportunity Gal 6:10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. Eph 5:22-24, Roles, Not Worth/Ability Eph 5:22-24 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. 42. Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, Love Your Wives, Even When Its Difficult Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, Dr. Talbot while speaking at The Church Of The Open Door, after teaching on Ephesians 5:22 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord, was confronted by a very angry woman who said, Sir, if you were why my husband, Id poison you. He replied, Woman, if you were why my wife I would drink the poison. 43. Eph 5:25-27 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 44. Eph 5:25-27, Love Your Wives Sacrificially Eph 5:25-27just as Christ gave himself up for her Wives are never commanded to give herself up for him But the wife is told; CSB Eph 5:33 the wife is to respect 45. Ken Davis, Husband Learns Love Is More Than Words For the first 15 years of my marriage, I was a terrible husband. Diane held down a full-time job, became my secretary, mothered our daughters, and waited on me hand and foot without ever demanding that I lift a finger to help. I loved my wife very much, but I hadn't yet learned how to show my love. I had a lesson to learn, and God used a vacuum cleaner to teach it. I learned many things about vacuuming one day. First, I learned that our cat was terrified of vacuum cleaners. That kept me entertained for about an hour. As I vacuumed in one direction, a stripe would appear. Going the opposite direction would create a stripe of a different shade. Entranced, I striped the whole room. Then I went crossways, creating a checkerboard pattern. I got so carried away that I dusted the furniture and straightened the entire house. 46. Ken Davis, Husband Learns Love Is More Than Words I was once again embedded in the easy chair, working on my crossword puzzle, when Diane came home. She struggled through the door with a bag of groceries under each arm, kicked the door shut with one foot, and then took in the house with an expert glance. Her mouth dropped open. Slowly the bags slipped from her grasp and dropped to the floor. "Who did this?" she asked. "I did," I said. Without warning, she attacked. Diving on me before I could get out of the chair, she smothered me with kisses and hugs, showering gratitude on me for helping her. The kisses grew more passionate. We broke the chair. It was wonderful! The vacuum cleaner taught me an important lesson that day. Love is expressed with more than just words. 47. Eph 5:28-33 Eph 5:28-33 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church 30 for we are members of his body. 31 "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." 32 This is a profound mystery but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. 48. Eph 5:25+33, Love vs. Respect Eph 5:25 Husbands, love [Mood - Imperative] your wives Eph 5:33..the wife must respect [Mood - Subjunctive] her husband.
